The DisFort's Chit Chat Cafe

He rides well, CG's pretty empty for Halloween weekend, of course the constant deluge of rain may be dampening everything, I hate rain travel

Break him in right, @team bradfield, and tell him about how the Fort and WDW used to be ...

PS - I bet when you get to the Fort on 11/1 I bet more than half the campers will be leaving out on that day.

Drat. Spilled some diet Coke across the laptop keyboard. Now some keys are non-responsive. Checking YT, maybe pulling up the key buttons and swabbing with rubbing alcohol underneath might do the trick. Yes/no? Other ideas?

Using a plugin usb keyboard temporarily. Mopped it up quickly, didn't get battery wet.

Put it in a small enclosed space with a dehumidifier for about 3 days.

Sometimes its too late....for a laptop keyboard. They fry pretty quickly. I been through two on my dell in the past 4 years. Once was a coffee incident caused by me and the other was when Ellie was a puppy and jumped up on the desk because puppy and knocked over my water.

I have a sneaky suspicion that one of our regular posters here is contributing under a Nom de Plume. Over in the Headlines there is an article titled, " I Had My Daughter's Disney Career All Planned Out " . Granted a few details varied from the story most of us are familiar with I suspect to protect the daughter , but the gist of the story rings true.
Bama Ed you have some experience in this area maybe you could review this article for us??

Here is the article in question.

A certain amount of "creative license" was probably permitted by the editors to protect the identity of the author.

As far as a review goes, the author is incredibly naive. There is no flippin' way I would encourage my child to work with Disney unless it was in a strong technical role. Starting as an hourly CM and then trying to maneuver into management puts you up against 17 zillion other CM's aspiring to the same thing. It's an environment ripe for politics, backstabbing, conniving, and deception. I've been less than impressed with nearly every "management" person I've ever come in contact with. I haven't seen very much "leadership" either tbh. I'm far more impressed with experienced hourly CM's.

If you want to think I wrote the article, well .....

Plus me and DW don't need DD to get park access. I could buy a little condo in Celebration, cruise 10 minutes of World Drive onto the property, and use an annual pass. Heck I'd be happy with the cheap one to use on weekdays and off-times. I don't have to be there on Christmas Day, for example, but I'd still have plenty of opportunities to see the decorations, etc.

I know a few people who left WDW after several years in management. None would go back. The perks like park access get you only so much good will.

I just read that, and wow. What ........ thats all I have to say. Parents not wanting this to happen and then planning a whole disney career for there kid. But they havent spoke to there daughter since taking the job 4 months ago. I quick read it, but seems like .......

No one said you were the author Ed. Sounds like somebody has a guilty conscience to me. After 2 summers up in the Fort Walton Beach area, Florida Summers are not for me. Coming for Christmas in the Fort has been fun for us considering the strained family relations we both have, so it works for us. Being in the parks for Christmas Eve or day like New Years Eve or Day is something we avoid like plague

There are plenty of stories of hourly Cast Members struggling to live above the poverty line supported solely by their Disney wages (even if the hourly rate is going to $15). My DD lived at Vista Way apartments like the author's DD did. But that isn't the real world.

That child has free bus transportation to/from work. They live in a 3 bed/2 bath apartment for 6 people with a 2nd refrigerator in the living room. It's close to work. It's a convenient arrangement that can be tolerated for a semester (about 4 months).

The real world is that Orlando/Kissimmee/LBV apartments are expensive. You need to have your own wheels to get to/from work. You will likely have multiple roommates or be renting somebody's bedroom in a house. Possibly you'll have a small monthly car payment, pay for your own insurance and gas, and you're gonna need new tires soon. The article's author would possibly be helping support his kid financially for a while (how many years?).

Other folks have similar dreams but they get put off for the real world. But you can still eventually come back to the dream. Rusty Scupper and his DW retired and THEN moved to Florida to work for the Mouse.

Some people do work for Disney after the College Program. It's something the kids consider (not just mine but many CP kids) - but eyes need to be open about it going in.

Plus I like pulling your leg like you pull mine, Mike.

ED

PS - and yes, I've already been perusing the more affordable 1BR condos for me and DW in Celebration. I had to give up the dream of a small apartment on the French Riviera during the summer months (DW says :sad2: ). But a regular place within a day's drive of home that would be our own to crash in at the World (not DVC) any time we wanted is a dream.

Moved into home in Celebration in 2003, had to move out in 2005 to relocate to CT for good reasons (being near MIL after FIL passed a year earlier), but man we regretted having to sell and leave that house… I can’t believe how “cheap” (although it did not seem so at time newly married) it was building our home new in celebration was compared to the price of same home now! If you ever drive through, take a cruise by 1115 Oak Pond Drive… our short lived dream home ☹. I think would be well north of 500k now, was measly 251k brand new built in 2003… crazy! (…and I thought we were out of our minds at that price… ahh what Disney did to us… after all, our first date was Downtown Disney and our honeymoon was Disneyland…)

4077, If I ever get my movers "Two Men and a Truck' to get our things moved into our Celebration condo, I'll look up your old homestead.

Not that it will be any time soon though. Got some good things going for the next 2-3 years but who knows after that.

That is the kind of place where you wish you could hold onto ownership (or the mortgage in my case) and try to hold onto it while you rent it out. Over the years as you pay down the mortgage balance, you may end up in a place where you can take full/part time occupancy again (and not share it).

That's the model used by many people on the Alabama Gulf Coast (buy a condo, put it in the rental market, hold onto it till you can move into it full time). It just depends in which direction your heart gets tugged.

Bama Ed

PS - although going from Florida to Connecticut must have been a YUGE change in winter weather (and summer too for that matter). But growing up we always went where the job was.
