You've got quite the potential here! Class instructor... Cake decorating business... With your stage construction skills and costuming experience, you and DH could probably turn your house into a birthday playland and make a mint! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

:rotfl2: My girlfriends were talking the other day at lunch how the 6 of us should go into this very business. I could do the cakes, someone else the invitations (custom, crazy scrap book lady) another the decorations, another the catering or food and the other the books.

We pointed out we each paid $450 to Bounce U (similiar to pump it up) for birthday parties and people are going NUTS with them so there could be some good money since we are in a better area of town. :lmao:

I'm like Why am I the one with the health code on my butt though if you guys just do catering!?!

Seriously though you know how big birthday parties are and how expensive they could be so you could cater to the higher end. I doubt it will happen but we were just all talking about this.

Shawna, did you ever take that 2nd beginner sewing class?

It looks like my next chance to take it will be June, so I'm anxiously awaiting to find out the schedule for then. Last time they didn't get the new schedule out until a few days before March, and the first class started on March 1st. They canceled the whole series because NO ONE SIGNED UP for the March 1st class. Well, geniuses, if you get the schedule out earlier, people probably would! :headache:

I'm going to start the 1st sewing class on Monday. The Tote Bag one. For those of you who have taken this class, can the bag be made with regular fabric if I put a thicker one as the lining on the inside? I really want to use a cute fabric but the materials sheet says demin or twill (whats that?) or cotton/poly broad cloth (?) and the demim is so boring.

Ok I'm going to answer both Sarah and Alex because I didnt see Alex's post so i'm glad Sarah quoted it. I hate it when they get stuck at the bottom of the page! :lmao:

Alex, no I haven't. It was $75 and my mom said she could teach me what I needed. I guess the next hard part was the sleeves and zipper maybe, no it was buttons but I've heard if you have a good machine buttons can be easy. :confused3 I was supposed to break out my sewing machine today and do a dress for Morgan and a behind the door shoe holder. The one she has is too small and only holds one shoe per pocket. Mine in my bedroom holds a pair of my platform flip flops so I want the larger one for her I just cannot find it.

Sarah, yes you can use any fabric. The girl in my class used a basic cotton pattern fabric very thin and put a heavy/thick fusible web on the back of it. Just get it from behind the counter not in the package because the stuff in the package the instructor said didnt work as good and one of the girls made the mistake of getting the fusible web in the package and hers didnt come out right.

Cool, thanks! When I signed up I planned to use a cute fabric but then I got the supply list and it said denim was recommended. I don't want a jean purse. :rotfl: It says to get "sew-in non-woven heavy weight interfacing" instead of padding. I'm going shopping after work. I'm really excited for this class.

my denim was so thick it was hard to do. the instructor said she wasnt sure why denim was recommended for first time users. OR to use lighter fusible web. It was all foreign talk to me at the time! still kind of is. :lmao:

You have to show us your pictures though.

Twill is the material khaki pants are made of, heavy cotton. I've seen some really cute heavier fabric, but also wondered if you could use lighter weight. Lighter weight wouldn't be as durable (for the long-term use of the bag), plus might have more 'give' in it as you work with it than a stiffer material would. But if you did a liner, it would be more durable.

I wanted to do a dark denim bag with a wild print liner! :thumbsup2

that would be so cute. i wish I would have gotten fancysmakin' with my lining. :sad2: plain navy blue with denim outside. BORING. I was scared, scared I tell ya to get crazy with color.

Did you ever wind up dressing it up with embroidery or some fancysmakin' bric-a-brac? Cute little ribbon?

Well, we will see what happens with the Wilton instructor thing. My old instructor just called and said they have an opening here so she wanted to know if I wanted to speed the process up a little. :scared1: Ok now I'm a little nervous! I mean I just learned this stuff what makes me think I can teach it!

That's awesome Shawna! It means you have mad skills!! :cool1:

Hoo, sorry, I'm back.

Fed DS3 some lunch and tried to get him down for nap, but there's a very ticked off bird pecking at the side of the house. Last year she broke through one of the soffets in the house and built a nest; DH cleared it out while she was gone, and blocked off the soffet with some chicken wire. Thought that was the last we'd see of her.

This year she was back, and broke through another soffet and built a nest, so he again went up there, couldn't reach the nest to take it out, but at least blocked it off, this time with something a little sturdier.

Well, she is really P.O.'d now. She's managed to break through the chicken wired soffet and get in, but she's also pecking the heck out of the siding and probably trying to get at her nest. DH will NOT be pleased. :sad2:

Alison would say that you dirupted the flow of nature :lmao:

:cool1: :cool1:

I made reservations at a state beach near Camp Pendleton (San Clemente) .. right off the PCH, we plan to drive up with the in-laws to Huntington in the morning.. hang out and have lunch/shop/ play at beach. From there we will drive the PCH down to our campground.

I was hoping to find something closer to Huntington or Newport.. but there are no reservations left (or only for RV parking-- grrrrrr, apparently tent camping is not cool). This campsite was the VERY last one available for a friday night out of 100 spots!

I think I will do hotwire for the car reservation, cheaper to pick up at LAX.. we will drive to pick them up, they take our RAV with the GPS running. We will go to rental counter (via shuttle) to pick up the rental. Yeah, its' an odd thing but what can ya do. I don't think any of them have a credit card for the deposit, we could pay for the rental itself and put it in their name.. but without a card?? They can't rent (plus extra fees for under age 25 if the SIL drives).

no you wont be able to put it in their name bernice...you will have to put it in your name but you can put them down as additional drivers...you better make sure you get the ins. though

The one on display in the classroom had regular fabric on the outside but the liner was denim.

I think you should do it!!

And being a party planner/ event specialist with your friends would be AWESOME! A very popular thing right now is to plan big events for birthdays, sweet 16, communion, bar mitzvah, quincenera, etc.. You could be the moderate income party planner-- for those wanting to keep up with the "joneses" but don't have the cash to splurge.

I know in the Twin Cities it's a hot thing to have someone come in and do a themed party for tweens.. party diva type.

From hotwire.. it says you can pay the rental for someone else but they need to present their own credit card to cover the deposit.

Knowing my in-laws :rolleyes1 we will just have them drive our car. It's fully insured, and hubby's car insurance and credit card will cover us in the rental.

Q: Can I book a car rental for someone else using my credit or debit card?

A: Yes. Please note that the card billing address must match the address on record with the credit card company.

On the Car Rental Preferences page, enter the driver's date of birth. Then, on the Billing page, enter the driver's name.

Even if you pay for the car-rental booking on Hotwire, the driver will need to present his or her own credit card at the rental counter. The rental agency will require a credit card as a deposit. (Some rental locations may accept debit/check cards for deposits but may have additional requirements such as requesting proof of a roundtrip transportation itinerary in order to rent the vehicle .) The card must be in the name of the primary driver, and must include sufficient available credit to secure your rental. The amount of available credit necessary varies depending on the car type and rental period. If you opt to purchase additional items (such as insurance) at the rental counter, additional available credit will be required.

Be aware that car-rental agencies will not accept a prepaid or 'stored value' card, including those showing a MasterCard or Visa logo.
