School starts in our county on Mon., Aug. 27 (the Monday after our vac.). They usually get out sometime the 2nd week of June I think if they don't go over on their snow days or whatever. We have a LOT of "professional days" built into our 180 days of the school year! Sure seems like they drag it out an awfully long time! DS will be starting 5th grade - big man on campus I guess this year (last yr. of ES). :teacher: His little school posts their teacher assignments on the doors of the school on the Friday before school starts. They do this at like 2:00 & you go in this big mob scene to find your name & go check out the classroom & meet the teacher. That's one reason we decided to go ahead & plan our vac. Thurs - Thurs. That way we get back & we'll have a 3 day weekend & do this thing at school on Fri. (would've had to take 1/2 day off anyway...). I think when DS first started school they used to start the Tues after Labor Day - but then they didn't get out until the 3rd week of June - and even later if they had any snow days to make up. So it was getting to be like almost JULY whenever they got out.:sad2: You guys who start back to school early is what helps our rates / points be less for this week of vacation.:cool1:

Johnna - Kook! That's ME dahling! You are just the one busy Mom with visiting friends from Sweden who's hooked on coffee drinks and drives a Volvo AND WHO STILL NEEDS TO BOOK LINDEN'S ONE YEAR BIRTHDAY PARTY ON THE WONDER!!!:rolleyes1 (Unless you want we can be Lucy & Ethel?!?!?)

RJ - tried to go out & look for some meteors last nite before going to bed...it was pretty cloudy out - I only saw one so I gave up on it 'cuz I was getting SLEEPY:goodvibes (I think 'cuz I found that last beer & finished it off:rotfl: )

Betsy - glad to hear you're home safe & sound...road trips & long flights are always hard on my legs (sciatica).

Only two more days of work... Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to work we go...:rolleyes1

:lmao:
YAY! Who gets to be Lucy?

Drat forgot about the meteors.

Working on the 1st birthday party thing.

Very glad you're back safely Bets. Sorry your butt's angry at you. I think it'll forgive you if you make an offering of chocolate, wine, or other acceptable substitute.

With the kids back at school it will be safe to go back to WDW again! Yeah! Prices go down again too....Well maybe not ticket prices but the hotel rates do!

Hummm. How WOULD we decide who's Lucy? Is it kinda like "stupid pet tricks" where the one with the most stupid moves wins? Do we flip a coin? Do the other Peeps cast a secret ballot?! I just don't know!:confused3

Oh! Did I tell ya'll that I found a tomato plant?! Yes indeed I did! I just happened upon it the other day at work! The building where I work has this enormous cedar deck that stretches all across the front of the building & it's got this funky canopy over it & for some reason, the owners have left it completely 100% empty. No tables, benches, shrubs, plants...just nothing. Sort of this stark modern look I suppose. Anyway, sometimes I just step out there to get some air 'cuz the canopy creates this huge breeze & I saw this plant in the (empty) mulch bed in front of the deck. Hummm I said - that almost looks like a tomato plant! Went over & sure enough it's a freaking tomato plant! It was about 18" high & listing terribly toward the grass (danger Will Robinson)! So I took in a plant stake & some tape stuff & me & this other girl started watering it. She brought some fertilizer she got from her sister - the thing is LOADED with blooms now! We're so excited! I LOVE fresh home grown tomatos (miss that from WV)! We have no idea where the thing came from but we've claimed it as our own now! I think it might set a tomato while I'm gone...I feel like a new Mom!:cloud9:

Ophie - I voted for your guy...I kinda liked the last guy too tho.......

okay... the dumbnut got post #3000 and we totally missed it. :(

Cool. His wife is a member of the local alumni group and she sent us all the link. Thanks for voting.

LOL! That is one advantage to going back so late. I love the last week in August to go to WDW! We went last year (and 2003 and 2002). I would have gone again this year but our APs expired before then. But yes, that is my favorite week to go that I dont have to take the kids out of school, because most other schools are back in. :thumbsup2

:yay: Hi CamColt! We are online at the same time! No easy feat since we live on opposite coasts.

Baby not sleeping.

It's going to be a long day. Might as well just stay up now. Why or why can't babies learn to just go to sleep a tad bit earlier in life?

OK have a great day I am off to see if I can calm the little wonder and convince her that cranky mommy really is bad for the rest of the family who have to deal with me when she does decide to go to sleep.:rotfl:

LOL! I am an early riser, but early too bed too. If it's early for me, it must be real early for you. ;)

A cranky mom is not a good thing...not that I would have any experience with that. :rolleyes1

Hope you got the little one to quiet down.

HOLA!

A teacher from Kate's school posted to me this morning..she saw Kate in my pics and knows her..says they talk DCL all the time..LOL

Hola!

Ok, I have another questions for you CA peeps. Although I can book this as an add on for clients, I have to admit I don't know much about San Diego, LOL! (shhhhh, don't tell anyone)

First off are any of you guys near San Diego? Second, if say some tourists came in and had 1 day to explore, to get a feel for San Diego, what would you suggest they do? :rolleyes1 I have an idea but want to see what some locals would suggest (if you are locals, LOL).

I should add we dont want to do just 1 attraction like Sea World or The Zoo that would take the whole day. My first choice would be the beach, but it will be Feb so Im thinking too cold.

Katie:

ASK CHERI!!! She lives in Carlsbad, San Diego area :thumbsup2

Ah, near Legoland. That is one city I recognize. ;) We are looking into flying in and out of San Diego too because it sems to be cheaper, but if we do that we would need a cheap hotel for the first night. Im thinking Ho Jos near the airport. Any opinions, Cheri?

We almost booked our flighst via Long Beach last night, but they were higher than we wanted. We figured we would wait a bit longer to see if they go down and of course they went up this moring, so now I'm getting panicky! :scared:

Aloha!

Ophie - that guy's wife is in an alumni group of ______?? (Are you a teacher of some sort?!)

OK, so now I have to watch accuweather.com & the weatherchannel.com to keep an eye out on T.S Dean!!:sad2: I knew waiting for Aug. to vacation was a T.S. and / or hurricane threat but it's been pretty so quiet so far this summer...figures it's been waiting for us to go down to FL!! Hopefully, all will be quiet until the middle of next week... At this point it's far enough out that I'm assuming we'll be OK until probably Tuesday. Did you native Floridians hear anything ominous about this storm yet?! Should I be worried?! :rotfl: We've been known to get some bad weather up this way from these things too (last one we got was Isabel in Sept. like 2 or 3 yrs ago). Guess I'll have to add some storm instructions to my cat sitters list JUST IN CASE this thing decides to come up this way before we get home the end of next week...

Uh-Oh! The landscapers are here mowing the property around the office building.......I gotta go protect my tomato plant! I may have to throw myself down in front of the mower!

Annie I hope you survived the mower and saved the tomato plant!

CamColt - Cheri would be the San Diego expert indeed. Having lived there myself and if people wanted to go to the beach I would recommend Pacific Beach hands down. My favorite beach. Or La Jolla Cove. Mission Beach and Pacific Beach run into one another if that makes sense. Same coastline but Mission is just the southern end. There is a small boardwalk there with a wooden roller coaster etc. If you want to stay bayside - the Catamaran Resort is great and not too expensive.

If you don't want an amusement park or zoo to take up your day - you could also check out Balboa Park there are many museums and things to see there along with just walking the gardens etc. And baseball at Petco field. I hear that stadium rocks. And shopping at Horton Plaza. And the beach at the Hotel del Coronado is great too.

Flying to SD is brilliant. We always fly Southwest in CA so maybe fares are better there? Or Air Tran is having a sale. (I just booked flights for my Dad for Thanksgiving) My husband flies to SD for business meetings a lot and stays right by the airport I will ask him where he stays. Its Holiday Inn I think. The hotels just south of the airport you have to be careful of. Some are small and old - but there are a few very posh spots too closer to downtown and Seaport Village. Shelter Island is across the freeway from the airport and is an OK alternative to staying downtown if you want to avoid higher cab fares.

Cheri - how did I do!?:cool1: I love San Diego.

OK all - DH has a telephone interview with Gallo Wines in Modesto. Please send pixie dust.

Off to soccer practice. Keep us off page two!

More great info! Thanks Johnna. :thumbsup2 Cheri sent me a bunch too.

We usually like to fly Jet Blue to Long Beach when going to CA, however even those prices were crazy. As it is we adjusted our dates so it wasn't totally over school vacation and that saved a bunch on air, but still very high. But as you can see from my shiny new ticker, we booked...well, at least the flights before they go up any more. :yay:

Our plan is 2/19 fly into SD arriving at 8:10 PM. Just get a cheap hotel for that night to sleep, then in the morning head to DL. We will stay there for 5 days and leave on Monday morning 2/25 to return to SD. We will spend Monday checking out SD...I am leaning toward a trolley tour and to have lunch/dinner, but that is very subject to change at this point. Then we will fly home on an 8:45 Pm flight Monday night and arrive in Boston at 5:10 AM.:scared:

The last time we were there we did something similar...we took the red eye home and that last day we "explored" Hollywood. So this time we wanted to see San Diego. :thumbsup2

The tomato plant was spared! But now I'm worried about the dogs - our owner brings her dogs to work - Riley is an old pokey thing but Lucille is only 4 months & she's rambunctious! (sp?) They're Bermese Mountain dogs or something like that. Very pretty but I understand they only live to about 7 or 8 yrs old...and Riley is 7 - that's why they just got Lucille.

OK CamColt - now I have ticker envy! 3 trips booked!? Uhhhh...Hello?! Not fair!! :goodvibes

TRM - what does DH do that he's in talks with Gallo? Is he a taste tester??!?!?!??!?!?!??!?! Does he need a helper!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!:rotfl2:
BTW - hope you have a good trip to wherever it is you're heading off to on Thurs.!!!

Well, this evening I went to Kohls on the way home to spend my coupon that I earned there last week doing the back-to-school shopping...new flip flops & a pr. of Sketchers for DS & 1 tank top for me from the clearance rack + 2 pr of Levi shorts & a pr. of REALLY CUTE Levi crops for me (ummm...yeah, gotta do a lettle tiny bit of re-packing for FL here)!!:rotfl: But it only cost me $35 (OK, nevermind how much I spent LAST week in order to earn so much in coupons)!!:lmao:

In final vacation prep mode now. DH mowed the yard & trimmed this evening & I came home from Kohls & spent 45 minutes cleaning out the pond & changing the filter (there went the new manicure). Charged the battery for the Rebel XT & cleaned off a CF card for it + cleared an SD card for the A700...so both cameras are locked & loaded... Still have several little items on my to do list to take care of so had better go for now.......
