DIS Dads The DIS Dad's Club VIII - The Online Mancave

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.

I even read at work today, and I'm STILL far behind.
I multi-quoted as I read, so most of my one-liners were taken (BARRY), but I'm gonna repost regardless.
did you ever eat something, than look at the expiration date on the jar???? i just ate mayo that expired 6 months ago!:lmao: cant wait to see the result of this one.:lmao:
Pictures or it didn't happen!
My FIL at a banana daquari out of the bottom of the freezer when the kids were cleaning the freezer. He spent the better part of 2 days moaning in pain and running to the bathroom. Great Story, Russ!:rotfl:

My son is 15, and we keep encouraging him to get it done... before something similar happens to him. But we've also given him the "incentive" that he won't be getting his driver's license until he achieves Eagle. .
Careful. One scout in our troop just waited till he was 18 to drive, and didn't get his Eagle just to spite his folks:scared1:. Not saying your son would do this, just... make sure you know who you're bribing with what.
With that too... my eldest got notice last week of being hired for his first summer job. He'll be working at Summer Camp this year - which means he'll pretty much be gone the entire summer, with a pre-camp weekend in May as well. He's pretty stoked about it - and in his young world, thinks the $700 he'll earn is terrific. Of course in the real world, that wouldn't support anything... but hey, he's 15, and suddenly thinks he's on top of the world! He'll be a Counselor-in-Training (roving grunt), working at whichever stations or classes they need him at most. We're proud of him, but torn about him being gone at the same time. He's already talking about NEXT summer (2012) when he can be a full-fledged Counselor and teach different classes... SIGH.
I made $395 my first summer on camp staff ('94). And, I would have worked for FREE I had so much fun. Though after taxes, $395 IS working for free.

Yeah - our staff had those same canvas wall tents all summer. The only commodity that they received was electricity to power a fan or a radio.

He could really knock out a lot of merit badges if he gets enough time to!
We hung a box fan from the ceiling in our tent to act as a ceiling fan. It... didn't work great, but it was tons of fun.
Don't bet on getting "extra" merit badges done. I worked 2 summers, and earned 2 merit badges (Rifle Shooting and Orienteering)

Or me... I don't get to go enough

really
I mean it

Anybody want a peanut?
+2! One for Andre the Giant, the other because it's from Pincess Bride

i work for an american standard dealer, i can do it. now, nobody can clog a toto toilet. that thing can flush a live chicken.:thumbsup2 ask mike, he has one.:thumbsup2

::yes:: ::yes::

The toilet or the live chicken? :confused3
And exactly how do you know it will flush a live chicken?

Is there a big problem with scouts smoking?:rotfl2:
Seriously, though - congrats on the article. Nice job Dan!:thumbsup2

Both of those sound awesome! Feel free to post pictures!
The toilet / Chicken and flushing it was TOTALLY mine.... Sorry I had to spend time w/ the kids that i missed this... Well, I'm not. California Pizza Kitchen was great, and, You guys ARE funnier than I am.:lmao:
AND, the first time I saw a peer smoke a cigarette was at a scouting function, so, I'm on-board with anti-scouts-smoking articles.
Congratulations on the milestone! It has been a day full of them.

Yeah, this thing has been moving at warp speed for the past couple of months. The more Dads we add, the faster it goes... not that it is a bad thing.
I blame Stopher. No reason... just.... i see his name a lot on posts.

And speaking of Stopher & scouting, My 2 cents: Eagle Scout and Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow. Good Luck w/ your Ordeal. Just remember to really try to encourage the Scouts to get as much out of the service project and eating scant food as they can.

Publisher: Aren't you kids a little young to have your own magazine?

Phineas: Yes...yes we are.

http://r2.vidiemi.com/vemail7/PF/hosted/email/c504696101011.aspx
Thanks for pointing out Phineas & Ferb. I like this show almost as much as Fairly Odd Parents (on that OTHER network)

Good evening crew
We need our own sub-forum
I vote no. I can (sort of) keep up with one thread... I can't manage MULTIPLE threads. Plus, if the food pictures were on a food board, I wouldn't go there, and I'd have missed the Bacon Picture, and Dvczerfs's Mayo experation date vs. toilet conversation!

Sign me up please...

Was there in February 2010 and will be returning in October 2011.

Honeymooned there in 1996 and been there for a few work related conferences, etc.

You can often find a Disney coffee mug in my truck (I have 5 of them) and I have a Lighting McQueen sticker on my back window.

I could go on and on, but I'll save that for another post.

Welcome
Where are you staying in October?
Don will be around with your number sometime in the next 10 pages.:lmao:

You can also check out the disdads podcast, disdads.com and the disdads facebook group. No, I am not making any of those things up. Aaron is a mutli-channel disdads machine.

Really wish I could sleep. The last part of Steve's post just keeps ringing in my ears.

"Please keep praying for these kids. Allison asked Dale (mom) today if she was going to die."

How hard it must be for all of them right now.

On a lighter note given the "own" debate here's a random quote about ownership

Free Waterfall Junior: "You can't own property, man."
Farnsworth: "I can. But that's because I'm not a penniless hippie."

Ok guys Its time our next photo blitz will be tonight between 7 and 930 eastern time on Face Book. dont say you are not ready for one on such a short notice.Cause a Dis Dad is always ready to adapt to anything thrown his way.:thumbsup2 Tonights photo opt should be of you and at least one of your children together. It can be taken any where doing anything( but this time of year sports pics always win over the judge LOL).Remember big smiles:):):)

Hmmm swim season is just starting here. It's speedo time....

I'm beginning to think I went a little overboard...

Okay, so in my copious "spare time" I fancy myself a graphic designer. So much so that people occasionally pay me for my services. The going rate is $75 to start, then $75/hr. Most of the people in my market are new photographers or people who just want something simple. I don't charge for those because they don't take much time at all. We got a job for a smugmug site for a new customer yesterday and he sent me his requirements for his logo - again, it was an "easy" one. I put that in quotes because, well, he wants to have a compass rose in it. In fact, he was kind enough to send me one - it was 300x300 (in photography terms that's about 1"x1". Really? Our usual logos that we make are 3750x2100 @ 300bbp (big). So I stretched the image out to see how it looked and it was just horrible.

That said, I made one from scratch at 1200x1200. Then I threw the letters on it (N, S, etc) and the blurry blue background thingy that he wanted. He asked to have the name of his company around it on top and bottom but it would look weird just hanging out there, right? So I built a face for it, and some reflections, then a couple drop shadows. But then it was just this compass looking thingy on a plain white background, right? That's boring! So I made a rusty background for it...

Uh, I think this is a little more than he wanted.

lol

I just looked at the clock - I don't think he wants to pay $300 for that. Granted, it'll fit just about any desktop... :)

Not sure if I'm supposed to paste this anywhere since it's a "pending" sale, but I thought it looked pretty dang cool. Meh - off to bed.

Oh, the image he actually is paying for? It's this big:

Yes, that's the same compass rose shrunk down to a paltry 20x20.

<---------is a member of Order of the Arrow

Didn't know you were all in the presence of such greatness did ya??? :rotfl2:

Another Order of the Arrow member here. Inducted with me were two other members of our troop. We took it upon ourselves to be the retaliating force over our tormenters (already initiated members). Pulled many a stunt over the weekend and never got caught. One of the better ones that I remember was moving two of the chief tormenters’ tent to another area and hiding all their gear in the mess tent. Juvenile but that is what we were then (and some say now).

Really enjoyed scouting. We camped in some pretty rough environments. Our County owned a bunch of land in the Adirondacks where camp was held over the summer. Great times. Made it to Life when we moved down here when I was 15.

Both DW and I were talking the other night about how when they're young you celebrate all of those "first" milestones... but when they get older, you never quite know which will be the "last" time for something. Already this trip last week feels like it might have been the "last" full-family trip - even though it won't be - it sure smells like it. He wants to go to Hawaii with us in 2013... but even then he'll be 17. We've begun talking about some Florida trips without him :sad1: ... and #2 won't be too far behind. He wants to start working at camp as soon as he's old enough. SIGH.

SIGH is right. Mine is a couple of years ahead of your oldest. Thinking of a Disneyland/Hawaii trip next summer for her graduation gift. While that won’t be the last trip we take together, they will be few and far between from then on. Starting to wean myself with two solo WDW trips over the last year and a half. I wish I could freeze her at around 13-14. We seemed to have had the best times together then.

Great dad/son pics posted. Good looking kids. The dads, ehh.

Happy Birthday, Tex! And, enjoy the airshow if you go!

You got that right! :thumbsup2:rotfl2::thumbsup2

I was texting with Carl today about the zoo trip. Trying to figure out pros & cons of Sat or Sun, May or June nomatter what day or month not everyone is going to be able to make it:headache:

Sundays are probably the better day, since some guys work, kids sporting events, weddings etc, seem to fall on Sats:confused3

Zoo is open to 5pm everyday.

Got 2 dates to throw out there to see if one of them will work
June 5th or June 12th

If these won't work for alot of Dads we can go back to the drawing board, but we would like to have something solid soon so everyone has time to make any arrangements they need to make:cool1:

Sundays would be tough for us due to church and the drive to Philly but we might be able to manage it. Either date could work. Thanks!

Congrats to the Scout dads! I was never a Boy Scout but somehow managed to be a my younger son's Cub Scout Den Leader for 4 years and the Pack Leader for 2 of those years. Nice times.

The photo blitz won't work for me as all of my kids are out of the house. Too bad it wasn't yesterday; my DD and the grandkids were here although they probably would have left too early for the blitz. I think I'm too old for this club! :lmao:

Not fun either:3 months in a tent in the middle of a bare base in the country of Jordan during the summer. We enjoyed the days when a cool front came in and only got up to 115F. But I digress... that was NOT in the scouts. I only mean to say: I totally understand where you are coming from. :thumbsup2

(And I was in the Air Force, so we had air-conditioned tents - so it wasn't 'Army bad' or 'Marines bad'.)
:rolleyes1
That is terrible! I was a submariner! We didn't even know if the sun existed

I am visitiIng with friends (Disney) on those dates. But if you guys pick it. Have fun! :thumbsup2 Pics or it didn't happen!

Let's see if I can catch up now!

Congrats!

Or me... I don't get to go enough

Seriously?!? :rotfl:

Lots of discussion on scouts here today. Thought I'd post this pic of my son, Dan, and I in our uniforms. Dan's actually going to be featured in a medical magazine this summer because of a anti-smoking program he worked on for the scouts. This is the photo that goes with the article. Hopefully, our uniforms are up to code!

Congrats to your son on his first publication! Taking him to Disney to celebrate? :thumbsup2

June 5th or June 12th

June 12th is better for us. We have our soccer end of year party on the 5th, and we go whitewater rafting. We will not miss that one. it is the coolest end of season party around.

Alrighty then, it's commando disboards. :worship: I'll fasten my seat restraint and keep my arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times. Let the party continue. I'm arranging for my #582 tattoo now. Thanks for allowing me to hang out with you fellers.

Welcome, enjoy the ride, and are you gonna beat me to the DisDads tattoo? I have mine being worked on also...

I could go on and on, but I'll save that for another post.

Welcome, and you should have your number soon!

On another note, I wanted to congratulate Mark (prattpak)on Earning his Ears from the College of Disney Knowledge! You definitely deserve them! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

Okay, so here I am with both of my sons. This was taken last year on Father's Day - the day we traditionally leave for Summer Camp. Both boys and I have earned some stuff since then, so our uniforms are slightly more decorated now... but you get the idea... oh yeah, and both have grown upwards since then, and I've sadly gotten a bit more rounded :sad1: since then.

:thumbsup2 wow, stopher, your oldest is taller than you are now. i think they look alot like there mom. my poor dd looks just like me. poor kid.:lmao:

::yes:: ::yes::

Are you guys hiring? For benefits like that, I'll relocate!:thumbsup2

Welcome. I was also going to ask where in NC, but someone did that on a previous post. Was in your neck of the woods a couple of weeks ago. If your ever in the mountains, give me a yell.

So, today was a most interesting day. I got to school around 7 and began to unlock all of the doors. My mother calls me around 7:05 (she comes up and stays with my son and takes him to school since DW works nights) and says, "I have a problem. Your oven just shot flames out of the front, and now the top element is burning." :scared1: So, I told her that I was headed home right then to check on things (I'm only 10 minutes away from home). I got about half way there and called her, and she said "it's still burning, do I need to call 911??" I told her to go ahead and I would be there shortly. When I got home, I could hear the fire whistle screaming and within 2 minutes a truck pulled up to our house. Before the truck got there, I went in and looked, and the top element was burning like a sparkler; really bright around the element and it was shooting sparks off in all different directions. Not a consistent flame, but still not a comfortable sight either. I went and turned off the breaker to the oven and it immediately stopped burning. That is when the fire department walked through the door. I hated to call about something that small, but if it had gotten back into our walls I would probably be typing this from a hotel tonight. Luckily, when you live in a small town, you know about everyone, and one of the two volunteers that got there almost immediately has kids at my school, and he reassured us that calling even for something as small as this was the right thing to do because it had the potential to do much more damage than just to the element. No smoke damage at all to anything but the element, but just enough excitement to scare the bejeebus out of you really quick :scared1: First time that I've ever been involved with something like this, and if it's okay with ya'll, I'd like to make it my last as well.

Other than that, it was a great day :lmao:
wow greg, glad it worked out for you and it didnt get out of hand.
Hey again guys...Jacob and Allison were both to have surgery today. Jacob had his jaw fixed and is doing well. Allison's surgery was canceled due to increased WBC count. This evening she became septic and has been moved back to the PICU. Please keep praying for these kids. Allison asked Dale (mom) today if she was going to die.

:sad1: still praying steve.

Unfortunately not. My DW got a new job, day shift finally, so the trip was scrapped. We are looking into crusing in Feb 2012, and a visit to Clearwater for Spring Training, as a birthday trip for me.
