I assume from past posts that you're probably in pediatrics, but if you don't mind me asking, what is your specialty?

I don't mind. I'm pediatric critical care. So I only see kids in the ICU. My wife will tell you that if you have an ear infection, then I'm not your guy, but if you ever have a kid who's really sick, then call me. But she seems to take the antibiotic prescriptions without complaint!

Oh good question . As I have wondered this myself.I know on the back of about 90 percent of my kids pins they have a mickey logo, and say official trading pin. Some have years stamped on them. Others just have mickey ears on back. So I am not sure if Disney looks for knock offs or not.It seems to me most cast members don't look they just trade em. But would like to hear what others have to say.

I had 1 CM say anything and they still traded with my son. I only buy the ones that say ALL TRADEABLE. Look at the sellers approval rating too, most are very honest sellers. Have fun and good luck.

I do pin collection, but no pin trading. I try to pick up 1 or 2 pins each trip for a first ride, first character picture, new resort, etc., but I don't want to trade them away. I have two lanyards and a DVC hat full of pins on my dresser. The hat is a cool display on its own, but need to figure out how to hang/ display the lanyards.

So i found some very inexpensive packs of pins on ebay. Any way to know if these pins would be able to be used for trading?

There are a lot of scrappers (counterfeit pins) on ebay. Check out the "Good/Bad ebay pin sellers" thread in the Dis collectors forum.http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2213419
It has alot of the ebay sellers and feedback from DisBoards members on their experiences.

Yes, the CMs will usually trade for any Disney pin (even) scrappers, but then there is a scrapper on the CM lanyard that the next person may get.:sad2:

The other good way to get cheap pins is at the disney outlet. You can usually find them for $2-3. You know they are genuine and you can trade them for whatever you want at the parks!

Pin trading is one thing I have NEVER understood...what is the attraction of it??:confused3

People that are busy trading pins are not in front of you, when you are in line for a ride :)
(Yeah I know pin trading doesn't really take that much time)

My kids don't really trade pins, but they do collect them as mementos from different trips.

I think it is a combination of things. I've always collected things...from baseball cards to guns. Pins provide a fun collection. They are relatively inexpensive (per pin). They provide a momento of a specific ride/resort/holiday/experience. Pin trading is a fun activity at the parks...last year we tried to collect the whole alphabet series from CMs. We got all but A,B, J & V.

I enjoy it, my kids think itis fun, my wife tolerates it.

That's one of the best times to trade...while waiting in line!

We do the pin trading thing too - though my eldest has declared he's now done and officially bored with it. He started it off in our family about 7 years ago. Then my middle son, then my daughter, then my wife, and I was the holdout... but somehow, with more trips in under my belt then theirs (and a bigger wallet), I have ended up with a larger collection. :rotfl2:

For family trips, or any combination of family members more than just me... I ALWAYS get pins on eBay about a month prior to the trip. Depending on who's going determines what lot size I need. THen when they arrive, I divide them up and pass them out. Everyone gets an equal number - but that doesn't mean that they will take all of them with them to trade. IF they see something that they like and want to keep it, they do. The nice thing about eBay is you can find the pins quite cheap - the best deal I ever got was 80 pins for $60. They aren't always easy to snag... but with persistence, you can get them very inexpensively. I would never pay Disney's retail price for 80 pins - though I do like to get one new pin each trip - whether is a dated pin (in the design), or a resort pin. I haven't collected all of the resorts I've stayed at yet, but eventually I will.

On eBay I have only once encountered a problem with fake pins... avoid anything from Europe or Asia. You want to read the descriptions carefully and look for something like "authentic Disney pins". Avoid anything like "CE" or other two letter descriptions like the plague. Those are fake.

In the parks the CM's have two different types of pin holders. There are black ones and green ones. The green ones are FOR KIDS ONLY. Those CM's will not trade with adults. The black ones are for anyone.

A big tip... if you get to the parks early - go to the Guest Services desk. Each park has one. They keep a big book of pins in there - and you are allowed to ask for and look through it. The best pins are found early in the day - these include CM exlusives, limited edition, etc, etc. You are allowed to trade up to 2 pins from the book, per person. Unlike the CM's in the park - they don't limit the pages of the book to one of the same kind of pin per page. Many times I have seen the exact same pin 2 or 3 times on a page. (After you leave, the CM might rearrange the book to spread them out).

ALSO - there are RANDOM CM's who wear their pin holders backwards. They CM's are holding "mystery" pins. They won't let you look at them. You are essentially "gambling" on what you get. The nice thing is though, that if you don't like or want that pin, there's always another CM not that far away who you can re-trade with.

Not all CM's wear pins. But all CM's who do are to trade with guests if they ask. They are limited by no more than one of the same kind on their holder, and the green / black rule mentioned above. Otherwise, trade away!
