Hmmmmmmmm - do I smell a possible new DIS Dads Give Kids the World fundraising project?

Great idea! Besides zazzle, there are lots of small companies around that do orders like this and may be more willing to do orders. Not sure that I have time to coordinate this, but would gladly buy a shirt!

When it comes to fundraising, I'm fine with whatever organization. My issue is that I'm not allowed to spend $$ over the internet (it's a whole thing). Point is: I'd have to mail someone my $10 bill so you all could make good things happen w/ it. Which I'm sappy and trusting enough to do.

Although, a disdads tshirt would be pretty sweet, and i'd put $30 towards that ($20 for the shirt, and 10 for the charity). Again, that would have to be mailed to someone else.

@AJRitz - I listened to the podcast at work. I had to stop when the boss walked past, but it was cool that I could listen from the site. I'll still try to tag the iTunes version, but it was well-done (from what I heard).

I was thinking of addressing the group on a fundraising effort. Some of you have followed my PTR and TR of my daughters Make-A-Wish trip which happened December 1-7, 2010. Our family was selected to take part in the BIG Give.

This sounds like a great idea for a fundraiser. There may be a drawback or two, though:
Last year, I believe we fell way short of our goal for GKTW. It seems like we don't have many active members at any given moment so we probably can't count on 550-some chipping in. And, the DIS itself is currently fundraising for GKTW with a goal of $1 million!
Other than that, I would be glad to chip in $10. :thumbsup2

not to alert

Emma's Dad doesnt this thread close down at page 250? I am getting scared!:scared1:

I would be up for donating $10. After reading your trip report I was really touched by the amount of volunteering that goes on for the Wish Kids.

Its here!!!

Can any of the Dis Dad's order them?

Those are great! I think I need to order one.

Sorry I haven't been around much. Work/life is getting in the way. My twin boys are very active in wrestling and soccer and now lacrosse so I have been running constantly. I'm going to try and participate more in the future.

I'm heading back down Aug 17 - 20. Any other DisDads going to be there at that time?

I was thinking of addressing the group on a fundraising effort. Some of you have followed my PTR and TR of my daughters Make-A-Wish trip which happened December 1-7, 2010. Our family was selected to take part in the BIG Give. What is the Big Give?

(taken from the WISH TRIPPERS THREAD The individual post is HERE )

The Big Give was inspired by Oprah's Big Give (the TV show). It is a group of ladies and men on the DISboards that make custom clothes for families that need some pixie dust. It started with an active DISer that lost a son in a drunk driving accident only days after returning from Disney World. When it was time for their family to go back to Disney, the DISboutiquers made the family clothes to help make their trip extra special.

This first Give went so well, that they have continued the tradition. Now they mainly select Wish Families.

The Big Give is not in any way affiliated with MAW, Disney, GKTW or even officially by the DISboards. It is just a group of very kind ladies and men that just want to bless families that they come to know on the DIS. It is a completely volunteer thing.

The organizers try to include many MAW families that they "meet" and get to know on the DIS.

However, it is impossible to include every family. They have to have a good amount of time to organize it (so if your trip is right around the corner, then they would not be able to do one). And these ladies have families, etc and sometimes life just gets in the way of being able to organize during certain times of the year, vacation, illness, etc, can all factor in to whether they can do a give at any given time.

Anyway...You may see the term "Big Give" in Pre-Trip reports and occasionally on the Wish Trippers thread...and that is what it means!

Now that we have returned from our trip we have decided to join the BIG Give and be a family that sends gifts, toys, gift cards, etc to other Wish families. All of these families are going to Disney and most of them are staying at GKTW. Many of these families are financially strapped because of medical bills they have endured over the years. There have been a few children who passed away shortly after their Wish was granted too.

I don't know if this is getting over my head or how to even organize this but what if the DIS DAD's Club as a whole sent some pixie dust and cheer to some of these families? What if we were able to get every member (easier said than done but..) to throw in $10? We have 500+ members that is $5000. We could send a $100-$200 gift card to these families and could do this for 250-500 families. I am not sure how many 'active' members we have and how many Dis Dad's are no longer even on the DIS?

I haven't brought this idea up to the Big Give organizers yet. I wanted to see your thoughts and to see if anyone would be willing? I will take all ideas and criticism. If you'd rather PM me that is fine.

If you wanted to see what the BIG Give did for our family read HERE (PTR) Post 2 has a TOC that you can jump to the Gives starting with entry #20.

I have to be careful here as a KY transplant but :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: (Also I know SU will break my heart again. The names Keith Smart, Bobby Knight and Indiana still make me :headache:.)
Keith Smart doesn't bother me much and Bobby Knight is more comic relief than anything now that he no longer coaches at IU, but I agree with the Indiana part.

Here in the Mountian Div. BYU is tearing it up! PREPARE TO FELL THIER WRATH!!!:cheer2:
I was working on some things outside, so I was in and out of the house, but I made it a point to watch the BYU/SDSU game Saturday. That's the first time I've watched them play this year, and I have to admit I was impressed. I thought it was just the Jimmer show, but they really are a solid team. I wouldn't want the Boilers to have to play them, although I think we'd match up very well with them.

Hey guys. Just popping in to say thanks all for the prayers - for both my FIL first, and more recently for my grandmother. Both are in interesting situations, certainly, but the most pressing right now is my grandmother.

It has been an extremely crazy, frustrating, dreery kind of weekend/few days. My dad arrived in So Cal last night (he lives in San Francisco) and texted me an update about my grandmother. She didn't recognize her own son, which is sad, but not unexpected either. He last saw her about 2 weeks ago. His sister is due in from Washington state tonight. Their brother (my uncle, who is dealing with heart troubles himself) lives 10 minutes away from the assisted living home that my grandmother lives in - so he and my aunt have been her primary family caregivers for the past 4 years or so.

My dad said that she is still in lots of pain, but was responding a bit more pleasantly to the nurses trying to help her, rather than barking at them. She is refusing food, liquids and medication. Everyone is preparing for the eventual reality, but of course no one knows when that time will come - whether its now or still weeks or even months from now. The doctors told my uncle and dad that they estimate given her current condition, worst case in the next 36 hours or so, but probably a week or two, maybe, though not likely, a month. She has basically given up, and doesn't want to live anymore.

At her age, she has lived a long full life. She outlived my grandfather by 32 years, remarried a couple of years later, and then outlived her second husband as well. She's got a beau in the home, but told me a couple of years back that she didn't think she'd marry again... but was just enjoying the courtship :rotfl: She and my grandfather both were teachers, and spent many years working in elementary & secondary education. They spent their summers working with youth in summer camps, and in their 50's and 60's went on the mission field for 6 months at a time 6 different times to Alaska, where my grandfather died of a massive heart attack. With her second husband, a carpenter, they used their age and wisdom to influence young people in their church as Sunday School teachers for years, among other leadership roles, and made two trips to Israel once as participants, and the other time as the leaders/hosts. She was the 3rd of 6 children. She has 3 children of her own. She was married 62 years between both marriages, and has 7 grandchildren from her first marriage, another 8 from her second marriage, and 9 great grandchildren from both marriages combined. She's a diminuitive woman, towering over the youngest generations at 4'9". It has been a wonderful rite of passage for each generation when someone surpassed her. My wife, kids and I were blessed to be able to have lunch with her and spend a couple of precious hours with her in December. It was the first time we'd all been together with her in about 3 years... so these great-grands have some pleasant memories of her - especially since she was, like many years past, giving my middle son grief for having become "taller than grandma". :) Naturally she's been a primary topic of conversation in our house for the past several days.

Again, thanks for the prayers. Personally I'm praying that her pain and struggles will end, and she can be in peace. She's suffered from dementia the past few years, and this latest episode has seemed to rob her of everything she had left, and that's just no fun for anyone. She's had a good life, and is ready for its conclusion.
