The DIS-Clutter Thread!

I am also a Flylady drop out. :guilty:

Count me in on this. I just need to find the time is my problem.

Someone should come up with a Master type list for everyone to look at and check off.

Yeah, I thought about that, but then I thought that since people's houses are so different, that it might be hard. My whole house is clutter, too, but I am not sure everyone will have to 'clean out their bedroom closet' or 'organize their guest room'. KWIM? If everyone wants to write down what THEY need to do, and post it, that would be great. I think my list would be too long to type :goodvibes . Maybe you could post what you have to do (ie: Today I am cleaning the bathrooms, going through the cupboards, throwing out all the lotions and potions I no longer use. Dusting the hard to reach light fixtures, washing the bath mats, organizing the kids toys in their bathroom. I have 3 baths, so I think this will be good to start with.) that kind of thing.

I guess you are right. I just seem to do better when I have a list.

How do you do it?

Do you do one room at a time including closets, drawers etc?

Or do you do all the closets, then all the drawers, then all the high dusting etc?

What I find is strange is that when all my kids were at home and younger I was much better organized and not as cluttered. Now that 3 are gone and 1 almost everything is a mess. Maybe I just got tired of keeping it up :rotfl:

Well, I don't know HOW you do it, which is why I figured we needed a clutter support group. I knew there had to be more of us out there! I THINK that for certain rooms, I will clean out the closets first. My bedroom, for example, has his/hers closets, and mine desperately needs to be cleaned out and organized. I need to do THIS before I can tackle the toy room, because I need some of my closet space for 'outgrown' toys. The Toy room needs to be done before dds birthday (next fri :guilty: ) so we have room for new stuff (which I did not buy much of, just one Little People thing and a Disney Princess purse and a bath toy-which will go in the bathroom). We and my parents (is that right?) bought her a kitchen, so I need a place to put that...I think it will go where the changing table is in her room, but am not sure. Anyway, I guess I have worked out that much. Maybe you all could work out something like that? I'm sure that for everyone some rooms will need to come before others.
Any thoughts?

I just signed up for Flylady and have already received 8 e-mails. Do they normally send this many?

I got some many e-mails I couldn't keep up with them.

Sorry I guess I forgot that part. :goodvibes

The first thing I am going to do is go through all the clothes, so that means closets and drawers first, but only clothes drawers. That way I can donate all the clothes at one time instead of making more trips. I swear I think clothes multiply in the dark.

My DD12 was going through her room and things she didn't want ended up on my dining room table. Everything ends up in the dining room, maybe I just make this the last room to declutter/unclutter. :rotfl:

I have major reorganization to do. Our third bedroom is loaded with junk and clutter, it's basically a storage room, but now we need it for the new baby coming. I have to go through everything in the room and see what I ened to keep and what I can get rid of. Then, I have to clean out my bedroom closet to see what I can store in there (that's a project in itself), then I need to clean out the rest of the closets in the house to see what I can put in them. Our attic is small and is full already and we have no basement so my storage space is very limited. I have a lot of work ahead of me and I have no idea when I am going to get it all done.

binny-we will take all the help we can get!

NiteOwl-yep, we have a room like that, too and it is def. going to be the last room I do. I figure that way can put stuff in its RIGHT spot if it needs to go in another room.

coliebird-it will be okay. Take a deep breath and decide what would be easier to start with. If you clean out your closet first, will you have more room for storage, thus making the 'bad room' clean out easier? That's the road I am taking.

lewdyan1-that's why I have never signed up for flylady. I have heard her tips are great, and I have visited and enjoyed her website, but I don't have time to read through 8 emails per day.

Good Luck! I am going to post my accomplishments now!

Count me in! I need to reorganize (okay organize) my entire house. I plan to start with my living room tonight. Ever since we came home from vacation we have had two storage containers stacked in the corner. They don't have an offical "home" because we bought them new for the trip. Tonight they will find a home & everything else in there that doesn't belong will find its way to its rightful home. I will also vacuum the ceiling fan, dust & vacuum.
Tomorrow I will tackle a different room - either DS1s or the family room.

I have been meaning to do this. I had to invite some people over next week so that I will be forced to follow through.
OKAY, I still haven't done this. So I am getting up from this computer, making a space for the containers under DH's workbench, making a quick delivery to a client in town & hitting that living room. DH just left for work & won't be back until well after bedtime. Won't he be surprised to find he now has two sets of plastic storage drawers under his workbench & they are empty -at least for now!

I really, really, really need help with all this mess! While reading your posts I've been looking at the computer (and desk) and boy, I know I cleaned this off maybe 2 weeks ago? but it sure is piled up again. I want one of those big hutches or whatever they're called for the computer, printer and scanner. I want to be able to close the doors and not see all the stuff. I was also thinking about something like a chest of drawers for all the stuff like, copy paper, notebook paper, pencils, ink pens, glue, craft supplys, rulers, extra school stuff, you get the picture. I have 5 drawers in the computer desk and they are stuffed full. I have the plastic see-through containers full of stuff too.

Anyone know of a good place to get computer armoires and storage? (Good, meaning good quality but cheap?) :sunny:

My best first tip is to go www.organizedhome.net and start a household notebook. I cant tell you how much it has changed my life!
It has made a huge difference and made life SO much easier!!!

In fact I just posted about HN there yesterday LOL.

Go to printables. all you need is a binder which are so cheap this time of year anyway. :)

Containers now have a home - only one fit under the toolbench. The other is along the wall near the furnace - don't worry, it's not too close to the furnace. DH will be the first to say so if he thinks it is  Now it's off to my see my client. And then tackle the living room.

WHat do you do with all those pictures you are working on getting into albums?

OK, as I said I am starting small and doing the baths first.

The downstairs bath was pretty easy. Went through the medicine cabinet, not much in there, and all ok. Nothing to throw away. The drawers, I threw out magazines (we all have them, right?) and one of those 'toilet wands' that needs replacements. I had gotten it in the mail, and never used it. Out it goes! I organized under the sink. Nothing here needed to be tossed out, either. Only cleaners, TP, Kleenex, Little Swimmers, and Beach Towels. Just straightened it out. Cleaned the bathroom including the tops of the pictures and the lights.

On to the kids bath. Nothing in the drawers here, except the bath toy drawer. Everything is good. Under the sink I found a leaking bottle of baby oil, the basin they gave me when dd was born to give her baths, the scrubber from the hospital to use with basin, a metal shower caddy that doesn't fit anywhere here, and lots of cleaners, shampoos, lotions, etc. I threw away the basin, caddy, and baby oil. I kept the scrubber (I will throw it...just give me time...she's only 2...next week). I realized I had 4 (count em) toilet bowl cleaner bottles in here. 2 of them were almost gone, so I squirted the last of one in the two toilets upstairs. The other bad thing in this bathroom is that there is a bunch of 'yellow' near the toilet (yuk) but I can never get it clean. Plus it is kind of far from the toilet, so I wasn't sure it was pee. Wouldn't pee come out of linoleum? Anyway, I did the same good cleaning as I had downstairs, then soaked some rags in bleach and laid them on the 'yellow.' So far it seems to be working, but I am moving them around to get all around the toilet. There is also a ring on the floor where the plunger used to sit, that doesn't seem to be coming out at all. :confused3

Anyway, then I went on to our bath. I grabbed a big garbage and emptied the cupboard under the sink. I threw stuff away like a mad woman. A big bottle of Paul Mitchell hairspray (a refill bottle) that had been moving around with me for 7 years, lotions that had separated and STUNK, bubble bath that no longer smelled good...the list is long and the crap is plentiful. I went threw my makeup bag and threw out the old makeup that I no longer wanted. I probably should have thrown out more, since I know that eyeshadow only lasts like 6 months, but I made a good dent. I put all of the keeper makeup in a drawer that I had emptied along with some lotions that I am going to try to use. Seriously, I think if I tried to add up all the Bath and Body stuff I threw away I would have enough money for a night at Jellyrolls :guilty: . The garbage bag was full and heavy, and although it was wasteful, I feel great about getting rid of this baggage!! Of course I cleaned our bath as well.

Now, I wanted to add that I am going to put some things on a list after I do each room. Example: the kids bathroom paint really needs a touch up. There are some splotches on the ceiling, stuff like that. The same will go for the toy room. It needs a bit of paint. But I am going to write that stuff on a list so I can get to it at some point, not when I am home alone with dd.

Not sure what I will do next. The bathroom floors need to be done (after the bleach rags are removed) but the ONLY thing that bothers me from surgery is bending over, so I am not sure I will be the one to do it.

Happy Cleansing!

Hopetobee- Have you tried IKEA? Or Target? I would even check Kmart. Look on the websites first, see if they have what you need.

Mom2boys- I don't remember how many years of photos you have, but I would get some photo boxes or something. I have a few years of mine in a Creative Memories box and they are organized in the order I want to scrap them. Other years are just in photo envelopes and used to be organized until dh let dd play in them. grrrr.

binny-I will check out the website! Thanks!

Thanks, that is what I am planning. Of course, I have to find time to clean out my closet. I am going to try to do some tomorrow, but I have to clean the house and do laundry first (does it ever end?).

Hopefully I will be able to post some progress on Monday.

Have a great weekend all.

I know it doesn't sounds like much but today I finally put all of the pictures from 2002 into a photo album with pockets. They are all in order and when I get a little more on top of things, I plan to scrapbook them. But for today, they are all in one book and easy to find. (and I threw all the picture envelopes away). It's a small step but I was pretty pleased with myself..... :goodvibes

Briarmom-your bath room sounds like mine :earseek: My problem is I work at an Osco and whenever we put things on clearance I buy to much. At the time I figure it is only .50 or less, but I find out I am buying shampoos, bodywash etc that I don't even use. Just storing them in the linen closet.

I didn't do much today, I cleaned off the dining room table and even put the stuff where it belongs. I have some clothes bagged up and a box started for the other things I am getting rid of. Of course it will stay in the dining room until I am finished. :) At least we can eat at the table.

Hoptobee-I have a huge desk I use (yes it is in my dining room) it's one of the old fashioned desk from an office no top. I want to get a smaller one because I find with all the drawers and desktop space I keep way to much junk that I don't really need.

binny-I am going to check that website, I can handle one binder.

Mom2boys-I also have boxes of pictures in my desk, I would be happy just to be able to get them in albums.
