The debate board.. please read

Plus, you're serving to prove my point admirably: Your hand-waving attitude about the concern over collective benefits of a debate forum is only illustrating that you couldn't care less about how the frequent users of the forum feel.

Hey nice debate board trick....
I didn't prove any point of yours. The dismisive "hand waving attitude" is a nice touch too.
Our first concern if for the site as a whole, there are PLENTY of other places on the internet where people can have debates that are far more appropriate.

Disney Dee....i stated that I hardly ever went to the DB....

and I have no doubts whatsoever that the DB mods had their hands full....nor any doubts that the mods on the DB did their duty....and i commend all the mods for doing such a good job....

but as you stated...some posters ignored the guidelines...

as long as these same posters ignore the guielines...and continue posting...the DB closing...in my mind....seems questionable...

seems like the problem is transferred to any board now......

Gosh, I never knew what a scary place the DB board was.

I don't think debate board refugees will be looking to turn a 'My dog learnt how make pancakes' thread into a Democrat v Republican or USA v Europe rant. A DB refugee post will be pretty obvious.

But then again.........

I don't know, there's so many soccer mom-ish topics around here that are ticking time bombs, prone to erupt into a heated discussion about the role of empirical logic in determining the nature of reality...

Can someone email me or PM me other debate board places? That really was my #1 fav board (I didn't comment much but I read it a lot). I really appreciated the different perspectives on different topics.

As a DB moderator, I would like to comment about the DB needing better policing. I for one spent a huge amount of time (especially these last few months) policing the DB. It was getting way out of hand, "reported posts" filled my mailbox some days, and trying to police the boards was becoming a full time job! Just seems lately posters were going out of their way to ignore the guidelines, and were posting whatever they felt like, whenever they felt like it. Maybe if the rules were followed, we would still have a debate board.

Ah, now we get to the heart of the matter.

"reported posts"....

Does this mean the CB is the new DB? Obviously some think so. I'm not look to get flamed everytime I post on a thread.

Since flaming (aka personal attacks) would be against board guidelines, I am hoping that won't be a problem here .

If you DO find personal attacks occurring, please report the problem using the "report this post to a moderator" button. I am confident that the moderators of the Community Board (as well as any other board on the DIS) will continue to do everything possible to keep the DIS a place where we can share information.

Discussion is encouraged- arguments and personal attacks are not. (And, IMHO, that was what the DB was degenerating into...)

Actually, you did: I said that you didn't care at all about how the frequent users of the debate board felt, and you've yet to show that that was even CONSIDERED in your decision.

You might want to get to changing your site guidelines:

"We do not believe in censorship, and open discussions about various issues is encouraged."

That's a bit misleading: It would give the impression that this site is more than appropriate for debate and discussion.

Oy.

I don't mind a good debate, but I sure hope the "DB refugees" aren't going to be harping on how much more intelligent and important they are, as opposed to the mindless CBers who are made up of nothing but smilie emoticons and pixie dust. Thats a tired argument, quite frankly, and sort of insulting all around.

I can understand that it would be annoying to handle "reported posts" all day, but unless a post was threatening, could an "ignore" policy have been adopted. Pass at your own risk might have been one approach to constant policing.

We considered a lot of things son of the morning.. and made the decision that we felt was best for the site.
Otherwise what possible motivation would we have for shutting it down?

I always dislike generalizations like that "posters were" - makes it sound like everyone on the debate board was not abiding by the guidelines. Some of us did. It was a select few who seemed to be playing a game of "gotcha" that got out of hand but the majority of the posters that I read did abide by the guidelines most of the time.

Well said! ::yes::

Steve, I think those sites are actually part of Pete's other site and linked here for convenience of use for those planning trips to Orlando in general, as a destination. They are kept separate and on their own boards, as you did indicate here.

As for the other boards, cooking, crafting, pixie dust, diet, flowers, collecting, etc, I think those contribute to the second of the two stated primary purposes, that being a Disney community, with the first being Disney travel planning. I think (I may be way off, oftentimes I am) that he, being the guy who owns the place, having written the rules as he sees fit, for the betterment of his site, did not see the recently made 'read only' board as fostering either of those precepts, planning, nor community. Just my thoughts.

In the past, when things were done, in general to the boards or with me as an individual, that I may not have liked or agreed with, one of my options was to take a hike, or lay in lurkdom. I decided to do neither, still here. Well, okay, several times over the past 5+ years here, I have gotten my shorts in a knot and sulked and lurked for a short time, but the DIS, its people, the family here, have meant more to me than to sit on the sidelines, looking in. I like to participate, in the planning of my trips to Orlando and Anaheim, and help, when I can, others do the same. I thoroughly and immensely enjoy the community these boards foster, to me, my family, my friends here. Others, on the other hand, who have been here over the years, objecting to changes the owner thinks are appropriate, have sulked off, a few starting their own DIS spin-off boards (kind of like a Happy Days and then a Laverne and Shirley spin-off), and a few following in those leaders' footsteps and becoming members, I guess, of those same spin-off boards. Those boards certainly have their legitimate place on the Net, filling a need, uncensored and more free-wheeling. Others have just left, off to where, I have no idea. Some I miss dearly, some I could not care less as to where they are. And others, simply lurk here, or change their name, so as to participate, but more or less, not willingly.

The DIS has evolved a lot from when I, and many who have posted on this thread, first stopped here. I know I have seen many changes, but still, as Pete says, it is about planning and community, with a common bond intertwined of Disney. It brought me here, it holds me quite tightly. But, if I did not like what I saw here, if it meant that much to me as to what I did not agree with, I would have left, and will in the future, if I see it as such. For now, I see no real change, from my perspective.

You know, that's exactly what I've been trying to figure out. I'm aware that the board was rather "un-Disney," and therefore, really didn't "further the purpose" of the site, but I fail to see what benefits closing us down would have. Do you think the general concept is going to disappear? What benefits will this bring that will outweigh the discontentedness of the users and the influx of debate-style topics on other boards?

I like the idea of having to be granted access to get into the DB forum that way people know ther is going to be somewhat mature conversation content inthere and they can then choose to obtain access or not.

Stands Claps and Whistles!!

I have to say Alex that probably the biggest contribution to the death of the DB was removing Nikole as moderator.

She didn't take crap from either side and she was fair.

ah but it's ok for the cbers to refer to the dbers as mean and nasty people? ;)

Labels shouldn't be tossed by either side.

I'm sad to see the DB go but then it hasn't been the same for me in a long long time. I agree with some of the posters about how things could have been handled but oh well....spilt milk, water under the bridge, yada yada yada.

Not sure why people think they should argue it's closing though. Pete's site, Pete's rules. Perhaps you're new to this theory...it's been around for quite a few years.

Dan I fully see where your coming from, but isn't debate a normal part of any community?

Nik, fair enough. Namecalling on either side is just inappropriate.

;) btw missed ya.

I swear I didn't pay any of these people to mention my name. Kind of ironic after not having posted at the DIS in any regular fashion after all this time. Not sure whether it's frightening or flattering to be remembered. heh

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled debate. I'll make myself scarce again before I find a way to get myself in more trouble........lmao. I'm sure Alex and some others are cringing at my name not only being mentioned on this thread but at my actually posting to it as well. :D ;)
