Well, I dont post an awful lot but I read these boards daily.. And as much as I love this board for all my trip planning...I always found myself drawn to the debate board...It was funny, exasperating, frustrating, educational , thought provoking and downright entertaining...but then again, i do have a bit of a tough skin and dont feel inclined to get upset by what someone else might think of me...

Besides others, the debate board was one of the reasons I became a sponser...I really wanted to help keep it up...I loved that there was always someplace to visit on this board, depending on what mood I was in...

This is Petes board, and he has all the right in the world to maintain, create and administer this board as he sees fit in order to project the image and purpose for this board that he feels necessary...So, I will totally respect his decision...

And with that said...i will miss that debate board and am really sorry to see it go :(

I think all of us on the DB, while we may have had heated discussions (I look at them as baseball brawl's - lot of pushing and shoving, but no one really getting hurt usually, and in the end we respected each other as opponents and wished no one ill will), I think we all, deep down, respected each other (with some exceptions, granted), and I'm sure if we all every got together over drinks at some Pleasure Island bar we would all enjoy each other's company and leave as friends and admirers.

ITA! ::yes::

When I wasn't planning a trip, I only came here for the DB. It will be missed :sad1:

DSNY FN

I had a countdown timer Nebsky but the mods took all my stuff away because they thought I wasn't playing nice or something hehe no worries I will put it all back later and see what happens then. I would be honourd to meet you guys for a few cold ones bring a wheelbarrow though so I can get back to my room. Oh never mind we would be drinking American beer or colourd water as we call it up here in Canada hehehe.

Ok, so we run over to Epcot and get loaded on Molson. I can live with that. We can also discuss possible changes in the NHL like taking out the Redline (opposed to that), letting goalies get hit outside the crease (for that), making goalie equipment smaller (for that) and moving the nets closer to the end boards (for that).

It doesnt' "need" one katerkat.. it's a decision that we want to have one. Management made a decision that we don't need a debate board.

Are you sure you don't mean "Management made a decision that we don't want a debate board." ? I know it's the management's right to make that decision, but it's a sad day for many of us. :sad1:
Some of us Disney luvers gag on pixie dust that doesn't come straight from the source, it just isn't our style. A current events debate does for us what a word association game does for other DISers, it brings us together in a strange way, but it's still bonding nonetheless.

Pete may regret this decision when the "rough" crowd comes looking for a place to post... As we've discovered, you can't get rid of them...they just return under new names. I'm afraid the Community Board may never be the same.

I'm very curious as to why this pleases you so much. Are you the type of person who complains about your neighbors skinny dipping in their pool only after getting a big step ladder and peering over the 8ft fence?

To funny John. Be careful though saying things like that may get you banned then you will have to come back as JJ/VH2

You know, with so many people using "Pete's site, Pete's rules" as a way to try to curb all questioning and criticism, it's no wonder they're so vehemently against a forum for debate.

I'm not against or for a debate. As I posted earlier, I did read the debate board quite frequently. I actually learned alot over there. I just think that it's his place and if we don't like it then leave.

I love this board. I spend sometimes over 4 hours a days on here. I love the fellowship and companionship I get when I come here. This place is a real phenomenon!!! I feel like I "know" some of these people and I feel like I have real friends on here. People I may never meet have touched my life, given me advice on my kids and taken my advice on their pets, showed me their garden and remodeling photos, let me watch their children grow, made me actually look forward to that next picture and feel joy for them.
I came here looking for Disney advice. What I found was so much more. Here is a group of people just like me! Everyone loves Disney like I do. Noone here is going to shake their heads and look at me like I'm crazy when I talk about planning my 5th Disney trip this year. You feel me, you know what I'm thinking. Most people I know in the real world have only been to Disney once if any at all, and most can't carry on a conversation with me about it. I love Disney and here I feel like I have people who can understand and relate to me.
So, what if we want to start talking about "soccer mom" fluff. It's this kind of stuff that brings us closer together.

Ok, just substitute the DB for the CB, the "soccer mom" fluff with current events (with a teeny bit of politics).

After that, what makes you think it was any different for us "hard core" DBers?

You know, that's exactly what I've been trying to figure out. I'm aware that the board was rather "un-Disney," and therefore, really didn't "further the purpose" of the site, but I fail to see what benefits closing us down would have. Do you think the general concept is going to disappear? What benefits will this bring that will outweigh the discontentedness of the users and the influx of debate-style topics on other boards?

ITA

I am very disapointed in the ruling of closing it down. I for one checked on the budget board and trip reports then headed over to the debate board. Ya know I myself reported people but if I knew that because I did that the mods would use it against me (because of the work) I would have never did it. I wonder are the people going to come over here know? why not...

But it IS his site, you can't argue that! If you had a site and only wanted debates and absolutely no pixie dust, don't you think you'd have a right to establish that?
My problem is with their reasoning and what you have pointed out as hypocrisy in stating they want people to be able to express their opinions on issues, and now they still allow debating which makes absolutely no sense. I would think if they will continue to allow debating it would be wiser to continue the debate board, otherwise it makes more sense to say "no debates allowed on the DIS" (which would be awful, but make far more sense going with their line of thinking).

That almost brought tears to my eyes.

Oh, wait, that's just my allergies.

Carry on.

It is his site of course, and as members we have every right to complain or criticize until he decides to disallow that, too. I'm not attempting to just be a *******: I think the complaints are more than valid. I believe that this decision is negative for DBers and other users alike, and I've clarified why.

To just sit back passively or pat the administration on their proverbial, digital backs isn't helpful... it isn't constructive... what's the point?

I hear you. Everyone has different things they want to talk about. I can see your point. I learned alot on those long shifts with no calls reading what's on the debate board. I'm not against it going. I feel there is validity to the Comm. board and Debate board. But, unfortunately, I don't run things so I don't make rules, I follow them, and learn to live with all decisions, because I'm not going anywhere.

I agree John we had as much fun debating as those that get a ick out of soccer mom talk do n teh CB so what is the difference really. Now they will just have to put up with debates of all nature on teh CB so be it if that is what the mods have now deemed to be acceptable but don't let the folks on teh CB go crying to someone because they have the mods to thank for it IMHO. They could have let it be and just policed it a little better or had access to it a little tougher etc.

hmm I have seen several semi "threatening" posts about how the CB is going to be filled with debates and people are going to post their stuff here.
I hope nobody is taking this stuff seriously.
It isn't going to happen.
Any posts here will meet the guidelines and they include no personal attacks.. etc etc.
If not we will delete them and if people continue we will take action against them.

Uh. Let me try and wrap my brain around this...

You say: "Any posts here will meet the guidelines and they include no personal attacks.. etc etc." How would a topic discussing, say, the president's approval rating fit in? Or how about a topic about religious conviction in politics? Surely, they both fit within the "guidelines," yet, they are both debates

I hope nobody is taking this stuff seriously.

well I did.....and I know it iisn't going to happen no matter how much it was liked. it would be just like if this board was shut down. you would have the people who frequent it it be upset. and then to top it off you had someone say just deal and it isn't serious?Well I am upset and agree that whoever clossed it wasn't thinking of the people who frequented it.

Sorry your brain is having a problem!! Seems kind of obvious to me. You can post it but if the thread goes outside of the guidelines it goes.
