Hey everyone. Haven't posted for a very long time. I took a few post doctorate courses and was spending time with my DM who has been having some problems. Then the holidays came along. Time flies when you are having fun. I was also dealing with the guilt of not sending MidNite the tshirt I promised her. The design is printed & the shirt is purchased, I just have to iron it on and send it out. Unfortunately, I made some great tshirt designs for my last trip (which I have this board to thank for) but my ironing on left a lot to be desired. By the time I was finished with my shirts, I was reluctant (and a little scared) to do MidNite's. So I stayed away from the boads so I wouldn't have to face my fear. :scared1: Well, this past week I decided I was going to bite the bullet and come back. I saw that the other board had closed (you go Baloo) and found this one. unfortunately, I did not get through all 83 pages, but I did skim through most of them.

I am taking my Nephews to DW in February and will be making some tshirts for them. I will also redo some of the ones I made & hopefully I have learned from my mistakes. :rotfl2:

It's nice seeing all of you again & MidNite I promise I will bite the bullet and iron on the design.

Take care, Penny aka Chaos Cent

btw - glynis - you have a penny with mouse ears in your design. I am going to try and recreate it if that's ok with you. My DH gave me a license plate with Dr. 1 Cent on it (for Penny) but that's a little big for the mouse ears. ::yes::
Thanks, Penny

Oh Penny! Don't worry about it! I feel bad that worrying about me kept you away. :worried: I'm not the kind to get my knickers in a twist over something like that. People in glass houses....you know? :sunny:

ok I'm back on page 141 but I just noticed Kate's new signature announcement about the number of designs she has on the go.

Kate - I am in awe at your generosity that you will spend so much of your time spreading pixie dust for others. It started me thinking that maybe you could ask people to pay it forward by making a small donation to charity? There is a website http://www.justgiving.com/ where you set up a webpage about your chosen charity and then you put the link in your sig and people go and write a note and donate however much they want to. Then you can see how much is being raised - and the money is sent to your charity.

You could choose one close to your heart - or even the make a wish foundation which would be apt. People could of course donate at the foundation site - but using the other kind of site allows you to see how much money has been raised through your efforts.

Just a thought - but since you are being so generous I thought it would be a great way to rasie money for charity at the same time... in fact all of us DDAers who make designs could do the same thing?

What does everyone think?

What a neat idea! I'll have to check out that site later! :goodvibes

Good morning everyone! Hope you all have a great day! Paul -- what is our song for today?

Ok guys I need another American :teacher:

The one thing I really do not understand is your education system... ages between schools - junior high - freshman - alma maters - sorority sisters...

Can someone give me a lesson - from starting school age through graduating with your final degree... ages - what type of school - exam names etc etc and enlighten me?

I'd be most grateful
I will do my best. If I leave anything out, somebody please fill it in.

Preschool (optional, but very popular) usually starts around age 3.

Kindergarten - age 5. Some wait until 6, depending on individual child.
Now here is where it becomes confusing, because school districts can vary. Ours is like this.
Elementary School, grades 1st - 5th. Ages usually 6-10yrs, respectively.

Middle School, grades 6,7,8, ages 11, 12, 13

High School:
9th grade - freshman, age 14
10th grade - sophomore, age 15 (PSAT exam, pre-scholastic appitude test)
11th grade - junior, age 16(PSAT, or SAT, depending on exam taken in 10th grade)
12th grade - senior, age 17(SAT if not taken previously). Graduate from high school. Degree - Diploma

College (what you call University)
Freshman year
Sophomore year
Junior year
Senior year, ending with either a Bacholer of Science or Bacholer of Arts Degree, depending on field of study. Most students end their education here. Some fields require, or people opt to, continue through another year of post graduate study, which ends with a Masters in Science/Arts. Jennifer, and others, you can explain the continuation of study for the Doctorate degree.

I'll give it a try:

Typically school's in our area fall in the following categories (some other parts of the country may be different, others can correct me or add on):

Elementary School (also called grade school or primary school) consists of Kindergarten and grade 1 through grade 5. Kindergarten starts in the year in which the child is 5 years old, or will turn 5 years old by Dec. 1 of that year (Cutoff is Sept. 1 in other areas). Then each year the child progresses to the next grade from Kindergarten to grade 1 through grade 5. (Some areas are now offering Pre-Kindergarten for 4 year olds)

Middle School consists of grades 6 - 8 (In some districts it may be 5 - 8, or 6 - 9 or some combination) When I was younger they called it Junior High School and it was grades 7 - 8, Elementary was K - 6. In other words which grades are in which schools can vary based on the district, or how much room they have in the schools etc.

High school consists of grades 9 -12 here.

After high school, students can go on to what we typically call college, but it can be a College or a University. (My son goes to the Georgia Institute of Technology which is a University, but within the University he is enrolled in the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering, but we still say he is in College, rather than in University.) College can be a Community College which is typically a 2 year program, or a University which offers a 4 year program. In Community college one can obtain a 2 year degree called an Associate's Degree, or just complete the first 2 years of a 4 year program before transferring to a University. A 4 year program is called a Bachelor's Degree. Anything up to a bachelor's degree is called Undergraduate Studies. You can then go on to what is called Graduate School, where you can get a Master's degree, or a Doctorate Degree (PhD or Doctor of Philosophy, different than a Medical Doctor, or a Medical Degree or a Law Degree). You need an undergraduate degree to go to Graduate school, and you need a Master's degree to get a Doctorate degree as far as I know. In undergraduate studies you can also choose a program that is pre-medical or pre-law with the intention of going on to Law School or Medical School, and I am not familiar with what those entail, but I assume when you complete Medical School and you can come away with various Medical degrees. (Maybe Jen can chime in here.)

When you are in High School or College a first year student is called a Freshman (9th grade, or first year college), a second year student (10th grade, or 2nd year college) is called a Sophomore, a third year student is called a Junior, and a 4th year student is called a Senior.

Alma Mater refers to the school from which you obtained your degree. A Sorority (typically women, thus members are sisters) or a Fraternity (typically men, called brothers but could be both men and women) is a group that has Greek Letters for names, and has something in common or a specific purpose. Hopefully someone else can expand on this area.

As far as exams, this may vary, but here is what our schools have. There are usually 2 semesters per year of school, and in High School and College there are usually Mid term exams at the end of the first semester, and final exams at the end of the second semester. In New York State (and maybe others as well) there are Regent's exams at the end of the year in High School that every student must pass in certain subject areas that are standard exams across the whole state. These usually take the place of a final exam for classes where there is a Regent's exam.

There are also classes in High School called Advance Placement (AP) which are college level courses in High School. There is an AP exam for each AP class that is given on the same date for the whole country, sometime in early May. Depending on the score you get on the exam, and what college you attend, you may be able to get College credit for the course, but each college can decide what classes and what exam scores they want to accept.

Hope this helps, like I said there are probably some differences across the country, but in general this is how it works.

Tammi, it looks like you and I were posting at about the same time. Sounds very similar, hopefully I haven't confused her more.

Between the 2 of us, hopefully we covered everything!

Your hair looks great. It is different it will take time getting used to. I had 12 inches chopped off before Thanksgiving and sometimes I still feel like there needs to be more hair back there.

You didn't look like a Grandma before and now you absolutely positively do not look like a Grandma.

You are far too kind! :teeth:

We are in Tigard technically but Beaverton school district. Outside of Portland. Where in OR are you guys?

We're in Clackamas- about 4 miles from the Clackamas Town Center- we're practically downright neighbors!

This is for anyone who might not see the general board, I just wanted to get some feedback over here too.

Ok I am so confused right now. I need someone to give me an unbiased opinion. Heres the story...

Last October I took my 4th grader, 1st grader, & nursery school kids out of school for 3 days during the Rosh Hashana week (It was from 10/1-10/10) since the following monday was Columbus day, we got a 10 day vacation where I only took them out for 3 days. ...

Our school policy states that the child cannot have ANY unexcused absences. If they do & there is a test on that day they are given a "zero". They are not allowed to be given assignments ahead of time & anything they miss while they are out is a "zero" . So, to work around what I consider to be a ridiculous rule I called my 2 older ones in sick for the 3 days. (which I found out alot of people in my school district did too, some of which I saw at Disney!) My kids did not mention the trip to their teachers as the teachers are required to report any unexcused absences they know about. They returned to school, luckily since it was the Jewish New Year there was no or little homework that week & Friday was "fun Friday" doing crafts & stuff so it was a "easy week". All went well & the kids did great on their report cards in November.

Ok fast forward to now..I was very stressed out about taking them out & decided this year we would go in late August. Well my DH may have a conference then so now my mind is going back to October . (we had such a good time at MNSSHP & really wanted to do it again!)

I was looking at 9/30-10/9. There is Yom Kipper & Columbus day in there so we would get a 10 day vacation at Disney but I would have to take them out for 4 days. (They would then be 5th, 2nd, & K at the time). There's no way to "ask" if I can take them out for a "family situation" so i would have to call them in sick again (which makes me very nervous already). So I'd be calling out 3 kids all in the same school for 4 days. My DH believes that we should take them out since they are all doing well. I do too, but the school policy is so strict I don't want to make it hard on my children when they go back. I am not worried about them academically I just don't want the teacher or principal to give them a hard time if they found out. Fortunately the first week is very slow & there is not alot of homework due to the Jewish holidays....Ok Mom's & Dad's (grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, etc, etc) Give me your opinion on this one. I am a nervous wreck over this . Thanks DDA! :flower3:

Does your school have a policy that if they miss over a certain amount of days in a row, they need a doctors note to come back? Our school has a very liberal policy...I took my kids out for a week, and the teachers were very supportive...however, they do have a policy that if you call them in sick and they are out for more than 3 days...you need a doctors note for them to return.

I feel for you...this is a difficult situation, and one that many people have many different opinions about...IMHO, if you feel your kids are doing well academically & that this trip is a good thing for you as a family...take them out and be comfortable with your choice. Good luck! :flower2:

And I agree with Kate...it's probably best not to debate this here...

Well, tomorow we are taking a road trip to go see the grandchild...I had so much fun buying all this baby clothes...I'm telling you, if I could give birth to a 3 yr old, I would do it...it's those sleepless nights...
