I do think if meds are needed that I will have him try them. I just want to be sure that he isn't walking around in a daze. How long does it take for the meds to take effect? Are their many side effects?

There are behavioral terchniques you can try if you are concerned about meds. I was concerned at first, but all hesitation went right out the window when I saw how well they both do in school now. We had to be patient and try differenrt meds until we found the right one and correct dosage.
(Please forgive the typos. I'm using my DH's blackberry as we drive down I35 to Austin, and I have no idea what I am doing.)
