You know, I have really fallen in love with UH in the last year. If I wanted to work with adults (or in a NICU) it would hands down be the place I wanted to go.

I grew up here, and you know the stigma. I guess I just always assumed University Hospital was .... well, ghetto. I didn't put together that it was a teaching hospital for a great med school, I just assumed it really stunk.

It's actually amazing! I never ceased to be amazed at the medical "royalty" there (see above post, and she's just one of a ton!), the history there, the ground-breaking stuff.

I was pleasantly surprised, all around. I learn something new about it all the time, and am so impressed!

It is true, if people get transferred from anywhere, they will go to Children's. That's why I too was surprised that UH AND good sam had level 3 units! I just only think of Children's.

when you have a baby - you learn pretty quickly if your doctor tells you to deliver at Good Sams that is not a good thing! Maybe since my doctor is in tri-health - he never said anything about UH

UH is state of the art - going to UC - I knew that but you are right -the stigma is still there and there are times - I would rather take my chances going to a suburban hospital than there!! okay - I would never take my chances at Mercy FF

Well I CERTAINLY am right now! As a whole, though, no.

I'm just trying to stay up as late as possible, so that I can sleep as late as possible tomorrow, so that I can work 12 hours overnight for the next 3 nights :guilty: blah

But thanks for asking :)

Good luck working those hours. I know that they are no fun.

Well, I don't know how underground these rumors are (I don't work there, they cna't do anything to me :rotfl: ) but both Children's and Helath Alliance are in the process of groundbreaking new, full-service hospitals in West Chester! Obviously Children's isn't too underground, there's a bit sign on that silo off of 129. The alliance one should break the stereotype of UH but still have equal care... we are really excited!

My mom's OB always recommends Good Sam. Cassi was born there. I think that, from working a few places, it seems like the best place to have a baby! Not, like you said, if you are "suggested" it for scary reasons.... but it's a great maternity unit all around!

not rumors at all -

but Christ is talking about pulling out of the Health Alliance and that could really hurt chances of a west chester hospital of any sort - would be nice to have a children's less than 5 minutes from my house!!

I was really impressed with Christ when I was in their maternity unit and you sure can't beat the view!!!

But I think they really discourage using the nursery there - I am a big fan of sending the baby to the nursery while you sleep - my nurse forced me to with Julia and it was the best thing she could have ever done for me!!

Heading to bed

sorry if the tanning talk and hospital talk bores you all in the morning!!!!!!! :p

I'm actually surprised they do that! Most of the other hospitals only use the nursery now for rounds and special circumstances. Otherwise the baby has to be in with the mom at all times.

As far as Christ, beleive it as much as you believe Contemporary DVC or a 5th park. It might happen some day, but it's all talk as of now. The deal is this: legally, they can't. There's some clause in their contract that they a part of the alliance can pull out under certain circumstances (related to financial difficulty). Well, the circumstances are not there. In fact, the finances are just fine, hence the West Chester hospital, which is a done deal. So they can try all they want, but until they can find a loophole (which they've been trying to do for over a year now), all they can do is raise press about it.

Let's hope that remains true, it's a good system :)

ETA: I reread about the nursery, and misunderstood you. I can understand the need for sleep at that time!!! But it seems they have a greater effect for bonding if the baby stays in the room. Not that bonding is "ruined" or anything if they don't, but they just have research on it so they are all heading that direction. I guess they don't care too much about the short term for the mom's :rolleyes1

Good night Kate. I should head that direction as well, since I still have to go to work in the morning.

Oh no! I agreed with Kate that it would wake me up. In fact, I got a shower about an hour before so that I COULD wake up. I just thought maybe it had a different effect on you :confused3

I have met Dr. Kaufman. He is always named one of the "top doctors in Cincinnati" :)

No, we aren't realted to him :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

I warned you!!!

Jennifer here is my take on the whole bonding with your kid crap:

both of my kids spent the first night of their lives in the nursery - I had c-sections which is why they took Julia and then I asked them to with Nick -

I did not breast feed (I can't)

and I am about as bonded with my kids as a mom can be -

so I never buy into those arguments!!!!!!!

My recovery so that I could take care of them far outweighed a need to bond - have you ever heard someone say - I hate my mom b/c she put me in the nursery at the hospital!! :confused3 :rotfl2:

Well, I don't have an opinion on it either way. I was just saying why they do it :) I definitely don't think it's exclusive, as lots of mom's have great bonds with their children who didn't do any of those things... including all the mom's who had babies before a few years ago when they started doing it!

That is so true, so many factors play into how a child bonds with a parent. I can't see how they can blame all types of things on stuff like that. :confused3

I know you weren't saying it was your opinion - it just irritated me when people told me I would have trouble bonding with my kids b/c I didn't breast feed them or b/c I put them in the nursery!!

I don't think it's ever "blamed" on anything like that. When there are obvious parent-child issues, they can usually attribute it so something a lot more obvious than the mentioned issues. It's just that they do research on all sorts of stuff. And medicine nowadays is considered "evidence based". They implement strategies based on research to initiate standards that appear to be the best for the most people across the board. Obviously every situation is different, and good hospitals (and staff) take that into account.

I can understand that! Lots of people offer opinions when it's not their business... we know that, it's all over the place ;)

I saw a study today where they watched the recovery of people from heart surgery and found that those who had someone praying for them did not have a better rate of recovery and actually seemed to have more complications

who would do a study like that and say it proves prayer didn't work?!?! Did they compare the ages and suffering - did they take into account that people might have prayed for peace for them and in some cases that means death?!?!

I think people do studies and present the data in whatever way best suits thier purposes!!

Kate, that's probably because they want to get involved in other people's business, even though it matters nothing to them. They gotta share their "opinion" with someone, anyone who will listen to them.
