Do it the day before, if you can. No perfumes or deodarant. Wear loose clothing. Get a soap with moisturizer in it, no harsh soaps. The key to keeping it longer is to keep your skin moisturized. You have to shower and exfolliate night before and you should wait to shower about 10-12 hours, I usually do it in the evening and then shower first thing in the morning.

hmmm...the trick will be convincing my DH on top of letting me go out of town for the weekend to watch the kids while I go tan and get a massage -

maybe I need to rethink this!!

I could go while Julia is in school and get someone to watch Nick

I am sure my leg is currently whiter tham that. I think i am currently the whitest I have ever been in my life. As a child I was always so brown as a child during the summer and it would last quite a while. I look at pictures and can't believe I was that dark. But unfortunately I no longer have the luxury of being out in the sunshine all day during the summer or year round for that matter.

Beckky

I am whiter than white also....I was the same way as a kid browner than brown and it would last nearly the whole year through but since I started working full time no real time to go out in the sun and play. My arms aren't too bad but they are looking pretty pitiful.

I imagine that is a very rewarding place to be - but also heartbreaking!!

what babies are in there? wouldn't they send the most criticial to Children's or Good Sams? What level is it?

Level 3 also. Actually UH handles higher risk pregnancies than Good Sam, which I was surprised by. Even private patients can end up there if something is really bad. They are even one of only about 6 (when statistics were released) worldwide centers for Fetal Surgery (like on the discovery channel or TLC or whatever).... I was really surprised by that as well.

Very rarely do babies get transferred out of Good Sam or UH, because they are both top-notch NICUs. If they do get transferred to the RCNIC (regional center) at Children's, I can't even tell you how serious it would have to be :guilty:

It is amazing though what you see at University. You hit the nail on the head, heartbreaking but rewarding. It should be an amazing experience. I spent two days there last year, but this will be even more incredible.

Okay it is definitely time for this girl to go nightie night....I am reading posts and they don't make sense and my writing makes even less sense.

Good night all.....actually it's morning for most of you!

I just bought some really cute bathing suits!!! I normally hate bathing suits, but I love these. I figure I will be getting alot of wear out of these this summer since we just bought a pool!!

I am hoping to at least get some color by the time we go on vacation June 2. That and also lose some weight. :rolleyes2

Yeah. If you go on Thursdays (I believe, just ask)... I would recommend Lanee. She mostly works at Hyde Park, but at WC one day or so a week. She is a family friend, so I've never gone to her (a little weird) but she's been there FOREVER (since they opened I think) and people really love her.

I see Kendra, also at WC. I like her a lot.... I saw her SO often before my wedding, for lots of different stuff.

Happy Late Night to My Fellow Night Owls! ;)
I'm laughing at all of the DDA's "whitest women in America" members. Count me in! I used to tan fantastically when I was little, but I think my skin tone has changed as I've gotten older - now it's at the very least SPF 30 for even a few minutes outside, although I have gotten better about not burning myself. The only place I can achieve a tan is Hawaii - and by the time one starts to show, it's always time to go home - figures!

Do you happen to take any medications or have you taken any meds that tell you to stay out of the sun?? These can cause your skin to be much more sensitive to the sun and cause you to burn very rapidly. This is how I was for awhile I was on a medication that made my skin so sensitive to the sun. No matter how hard I tried to prevent it, I would always burn.

that is really surprising - you just don't hear about them - I know UH is top notch but I think people don't really think of it for babies - I guess I assumed since it was right next to children's they just sent the kids there

when my sister had her 1st - she had him at Jewish - when it was still downtown and there was a family in the waiting room with us -they had the babies about the same time - the other girls baby had spina bifida - and they all just sat around sobbing and the baby was transferred to Children's immediately - it was so sad - and here we were in contrast ecstatic of her perfect baby boy - it really made us count our blessings but we felt awful for them!! I always wondered what happened to him - I don't think she had good pre natal care - they had no idea anything was wrong and they thought he was going to be a girl

Ooh, I just thought of something else interesting yet nerve-wracking about the NICU-UH.

Anyone heard of the Ballard score? Every baby in the country, if not around the world, has this as part of their assessment when they are born. Lots of little things that add up to calculate accurate gestational age.

Well, Jean Ballard is the attending there. It's scary as all get out, because her name is all over all of my textbooks! :rotfl:

Kyle was transfered directly from GS to Childrens RCNIC at 3 days old, because he was having his first surgery the next day. I hated not being able to take him home from the hospital, and he was transferred via ambulance which was SO not necessary.

All of the nurses loved him because he was this big full term baby compared to all of the tiny one they were used to seeing!!!

They were great there, but he was only there for 2 1/2 days!!!

my DH's cousin just had a baby - a month early

and they checked a lot of things to see if she really was early - since she wasn't sure who the father was - she sure as heck couldn't pinpoint when she got pregnant

they checked things like the nailbeds and creases in their toes

You know, I have really fallen in love with UH in the last year. If I wanted to work with adults (or in a NICU) it would hands down be the place I wanted to go.

I grew up here, and you know the stigma. I guess I just always assumed University Hospital was .... well, ghetto. I didn't put together that it was a teaching hospital for a great med school, I just assumed it really stunk.

It's actually amazing! I never ceased to be amazed at the medical "royalty" there (see above post, and she's just one of a ton!), the history there, the ground-breaking stuff.

I was pleasantly surprised, all around. I learn something new about it all the time, and am so impressed!

It is true, if people get transferred from anywhere, they will go to Children's. That's why I too was surprised that UH AND good sam had level 3 units! I just only think of Children's.

Won't that wake you up!?!?

Good night -

I actually think that is a really good idea!! (bed not a shower!)

Well, they test different things (and in different manners). But it is similar in that they are both crucial parts of the initial newborn assessment.

Apgar is a different set of criteria that test overall well-being of the baby (especially if resuscitation measures need to be started, etc).

The Ballard score confirms gestational age in babies when they are born, as a sonogram, menstural cycles, etc can only be so accurate. It's important information in cases like Kate mentioned, where they really suspect a pre-term birth, but it's also important just to track what needs they might have developmentally.
