Threats rattle 3 universities, 2 schools 6 minutes ago

AUSTIN, Texas - Campus threats forced lock-downs and evacuations at universities in Texas, Oklahoma and Tennessee and two public schools in Louisiana on Tuesday, a day after a Virginia Tech student's shooting rampage killed 33 people.

In Louisiana, parents picked up hundreds of students from Bogalusa's high school and middle school amid reports that a man had been arrested Tuesday morning for threatening a mass killing in a note that alluded to the murders at Virginia Tech.

Schools Superintendent Jerry Payne said both schools were locked down and police arrested a 53-year-old man who allegedly made the threat in a note he gave to a student headed to the private Bowling Green School in Franklinton. Both towns are in southeastern Louisiana.

"The note referred to what happened at Virginia Tech," Payne said. "It said something like, 'If you think that was bad, then you haven't seen anything yet."

In Austin, authorities evacuated buildings at St. Edward's University after a threatening note was found, a school official said.

Police secured the campus perimeter and were searching the buildings, St. Edward's University spokeswoman Mischelle Amador said. She declined to say where the note was found and said its contents were "nonspecific."

The two other scares were determined to be unfounded.

At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, officials ordered three campus administration buildings evacuated for almost two hours Tuesday morning in response to a telephone bomb threat. The city's bomb squad searched the buildings but found nothing, campus spokesman Chuck Cantrell said.

Cantrell said there was no reason to believe the bogus threat was related to the shootings at Virginia Tech, but "we just chose to err on the side of caution today."

The other, at the University of Oklahoma, had started with a report of a man spotted on campus carrying a suspicious object, officials said.

The man was carrying an umbrella, not a weapon, and he later identified himself to authorities, University of Oklahoma President David Boren said in a statement. Boren initially had said the person was believed to carrying a yoga mat.

"We now consider the matter closed," Boren said. "We always want to err on the side of caution in a situation like this."

At St. Edward's in Austin, students who live on campus were being allowed to return to their dormitories as police finished searching each building, Amador said. Faculty, staff and all other students were asked to stay away from the campus, and morning and afternoon classes were canceled. About 5,200 students are enrolled at the Catholic university south of downtown Austin.

Amador said the university's reaction was not influenced by Monday's attack at Virginia Tech.

"No matter what day or when this would have happened, we will always take the necessary precautions to protect our students, our faculty, our staff, the entire university community," she said.

I just do not feel like doing anything today! I really hate when I feel like this.

I have everything pulled out of the closet under our stairs & now I have a big mess in the dining room. I would love to just throw it all out, instead of going through it :rotfl: Alot of it I am going to take to Goodwill. I have 3 large box's of new stuffed animals that I used for my crafts that I no longer do. Garrett has decided that he wants to keep the turtles & frogs  So the rest will go to Goodwill as well. When I think of all the money I spent on some of this stuff, it makes my head spin.

My sil was in a car accident today & was taken to the hospital. I am still waiting to hear how she is. All I know is another car pulled out in front of her & basically totaled her Tracker. Hopefully I hear something soon!

Well dh is home, guess I better get my booty in gear & get this messed cleaned up :sad2:

Heidi - Wow! Maybe I should turn the news on once in awhile! Scary!

Marci - Your shirt experience gives me hope!:) When I spoke to the CM I told her I don't have a receipt and she didn't say "Oh, well, too bad then!" Hopefully they will just send me a bigger shirt! I am glad Jake didn't hurt himself really severely with the razor!

Janet - I hope your SIL is OK!:wizard:

It's hard to tell from here, but if you'd pop a piece of each in the mail to me I'd be happy to test them all for you :rotfl: I've got plenty of time to help with this really

Mmmm. Cake. The only problem I had with our cake was that strawberries are not in season in November, and the groom's cake was garnished with strawberries. They found them somewhere - they might have charged me more for them but I don't remember that now.

Theresa :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: that everything works out.

Theresa, I am thinking good thoughts for you!!:goodvibes

I got the email from Pine Cone today. I've been accepted. Thanks again, Janet!

Yay! Congrats!

I think that would be really cute!

Robyn, I like the theme for the nursery!

I think my bosses are just too trusting. If I can't see and/or hear the kids and I am not 100% CERTAIN of what they are doing, I go look. But Brother would never dream of doing something like that when I am here. I saw on the Caller ID that the alarm company called at 8:45 PM. The kids aren't allowed to nap anymore, so why are they still up setting things on fire at almost 9 PM? I don't get it.:confused3 When I work late I have them in bed no later than 8 PM!

Bless you, Karen. :goodvibes My daughter does not go to Tech, but she has many friends who do, and I have a few former students who are also there. We have heard nothing more than you have at this point. It is so horrific. This is what we are coming to???? :sad1:

 I don't know anyone there, but this has left me shaken. I can't stop thinking about how those parents must feel and what those students went through. :sad1:

I just spent a little while on the Dillard's website with Cassidy. I think we will be able to find a dress there...that's not too out there or too revealing or too expensive. I just bribed Cassidy that if we could find a dress under $50 I'd get her Mary Jane Crocs to go with it!!:lmao:

Good luck dress shopping! I went over budget when I did it, so by the law of averages you should come in under budget. :rotfl:

I am starting to fear that I will find a FABULOUS job that starts right now. If I take it I will lose the summer with my little friends, who are my heart. If I turn it down then in September there will be NOTHING and I will be kicking myself. I am not one to pray, but I might have to start since I will really need some guidance with this!

Channon - I really like both cakes, but I would love to see the first one with delicately colored Fall leaves instead of white. I think it would be really pretty with a touch of color!

Oooh, yes! There were a couple of cakes in the portfolio with roses that were tinted very lightly. I think using about that amount of tint but in fall colors on some of the leaves would be even more beautiful!

Good morning, DDA. Today is so sad around here. We are all trying to get in touch with friends and people we know to make certain all their children are OK. It is a very hard contact to make. How do you ask someone if their child is alive? I am dreading the announcement from Tech with the list of names.

I will check in later with you all. Have wonderful mornings and hug those beautiful children of yours very hard. If they ask you why.... tell them I wanted you to.

That I have already been doing. More    for you this morning.

I've been trying to find a fall wedding cake with colored leaves - but I just don't seem to like them as much...here's one (sorry it's another cake Elizabeth, but you don't have to click if you don't want too!) but I like the white one still, then the chocolate one more than this - and I have no idea why! http://www.dianescakesandmore.com/fall_leaves_cakes.htm

I don't want to sound mean, but those cakes are not nearly as professionally done as the ones on the first web site. The foundant is not quite even, and things are just slightly off. Also, I think that the leaves are too brightly colored. They are still very nice cakes, but I think that is the problem when comparing them to the first set.

I'm not caught up, but I really have to go get dinner made. I have an open house at preschool from 6:00-7:30.

 to anyone that I missed.

Beth

Well my class is over. Those boys were so wild all year. Today we had them play "who wants to be a millionaire". We asked them questions on what we had taught. Each time they answered right they got play money. Well my co-teacher & I were very pleased to see that they answered almost all correct! Thankfully some info got through!!!:yay: The moms loved the photo albums I made.:)

Off to go make dinner..
