okay - here are some pictures of my curtains

I didn't take it down - I made an extra one (not today - 6 years ago when I made them;) )

This is the curtain folded over - so you can see the sides and the front and back

this is the inside of the gap - see how I folded it and then sewed it so the edges are not rough - sewing the gap only left a hole but nothing exposed!

:rotfl: :rotfl: I actually understood the drawing.

My panels will not be stationary. I'll be opening and closing them every day. I'm lining them with blackout lining so it will be dark for naptime. Having said that, what I was/am worried about is when I move them back and forth, the edges that are just turned down and not sewn/tacked down would unfold and become exposed if I didn't sew/tack them down. It appears that your valance is stationary and you don't have to worry about this. I think I'll have to stitch mine so I don't have to worry about it. The stitching won't affect the opening at all, it will keep the fabric from unfolding.

Am I making sense?

Where do you stay down there, Elin? Do you get a condo or a house?

We get a 2 BR condo in a small building called Sandcastle, located at MilePost 8. It is very private and we get the penthouse so we have no noise above us. :goodvibes The balconies are more like porches with room for a dining table and 4 chairs or 4 chairs and a couple of end tables so we can spend lots of time sitting on the decks watching the water and the people. I read 9 books this week on that deck!

We also get to sit out there and watch the July 4th fireworks being set off at the Kill Devil Hills pier and then at Nags Head and Manteo. Not as good as WDW, but probably 45 minutes to an hour of nonstop fireworks reflected in the ocean. Just gorgeous.

And, Dawn... we had MUCH tequila for you on that deck too. :rotfl:

What about using the stuff that you can use an iron to close the edging instead of sewing it? (Forgive me I don't sew so I don't know the actual terminology...or is that tacking?)

Good to hear from you Elin. When did you get your new tags?? Or are the Dis Musician and Piano teacher ones old and I just don't recall seeing them?

I have a sewing question. I asked this on the CB, but thought I'd ask here too.

Does anyone know the easiest way to make rod pocket window panels? They will be lined, and I was thinking one of two ways:

1. Sew the 2 pieces across the top and sides leaving an opening for the rod. Sew across to make the part that stands up above the rod (would also be the top of the rod pocket) , then across again to make the bottom part for the rod to slip through. I would have to hand stitch the edges on the part I left open, I guess.

Or

2. Sew across the top and sides. Then fold back about 4-6 inches at the top. Sew across to make the top of the rod pocket and the part that stands above it, then sew across again to make the bottom of the rod pocket. A valance I have is done this way but it's not lined and it seems to use a good bit of extra fabric.

I hope this isn't too confusing...

Any other ideas?

This may have already been answered, but this is how I would do it. I would place the right sides of the material and the liner together and stitch around 3 sides. Turn the material right side out. Fold the top back to create the upper ruffle. Stitch across the top, stitch across again about 2 1/2 to 3 inches below the first stitch line creating the rod pocket. Once you've done that to all your panels you can fold the bottom inside and stitch your bottom seem, making sure that all the panels are the same lenght. I hope that makes sense.

Sounds wonderful. 9 books?? Goodness, you had lots of peace and quiet!

My flight times just changed!!! Time for a happy dance!!!!
I've been waiting patiently for our flights to change, I knew they would and they did!

We now arrive into Disney at 9:30AM (Thanks Airtran for getting us to Disney 4 hours earlier!) and we leave a 1/2 hour later for our nonstop return (Thanks Delta!)

Paula - Where are you for the happy dance!?!

:cool1: Happy dance for you!!!

I have a question for you about flights. I booked nonstop flights for our August trip back in May. I have since checked them on-line and now both flights stop in Charlotte (and we change planes). I am ok with that and times didn't change dramatically. I am worried, though, because there is only a half hour to make the connection. Dh is teasing me about our luggage not making the connection, too. Do you think I have anything to worry about?

I just took a look at the valances I made years ago. It looks like I sewed right sides together around the sides and bottom. Then turned them so they were right sides out. The top would not be sewn together at this point. Now fold the top down about 6 inches or so, toward the window side. Sew the 2 lines from side to side to make the 'pocket' for your rod. Now your seams at the rod entrance will be 'finished.'

Kate - Bridge Warning! No picture! (My mother is deathly afraid of bridges as well! She almost passed out from hyperventilating from traveling as a passenger in a car on the lower level of the Golden Gate.)

I thought this was an interesting tidbit when I visited Jacksonville for work a few years ago!
Jacksonville has 7, yes 7 bridges that cross the St John's River into their downtown, which is on both sides of the river. Each bridge is a different color, and is lighted a different color at night.
Their main bridge is HUGE, not Upper MI huge, but big enough. When they built the Jacksonville Cruise Port for Carnival and Princess Cruise Lines, the city could only allow certain ships into the port. Why? Because when the river/ocean is at low tide (and only low tide) there is only a few FEET that seperate the bottom of the bridge and the top of the ship! If anyone ever leaves on a Carnival Cruise out of Jacksonville, ask to see the photo in the VIP lounge, and be sure to be on deck when you travel under the Blue Bridge!

Of course I had to go see it!! Going under the bridge would not bother me - but driving over it while the ship was under it would FREAK me out!!!!

I was on the Bay Bridge in SF during rush hour traffic and it took an hour to cross - my dad was driving - it was not pretty!!! That bridge REALLY bothers me b/c I remember pictures of it after the earthquake!!!

That's cool. Thanks, Vicki. I am filing this in my Michigan folder. I will definetely want to see it!

You will have to check out Mackinac Island as well. It is world famous. The movie "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was filmed there. You get to the island by boat and it is a gorgeous trip with a beautiful view of the bridge. The island has no motor vehicles (well, except for the fire truck that hopefully no one ever sees because that would mean there is a fire). You get to the hotels by horse drawn carriage, you can rent bikes to ride around the island, they are famous for their fudge. It is an absolutely unique place and I love it. My favorite time of year there is during the Lilac Festival - there are thousands and thousands of lilacs (which is my favorite).

I am okay RIGHT NOW! That mood may change as the night progresses

Steve leaves town on Tuesday so he has to be at work tomorrow - so I am going to be alone at the hospital (my mom is out of town and MIL will have Julia)

So that is making me a little bit nervous -

I just REALLY hope that I have been worrying about nothing for the past 3 weeks!!

Sending :grouphug: and :wizard: that it is nothing.

I have had luggage not make connecting fllights before. Luckily they were all on the way home. In my carry on bag I always carry what I will need for at least the first 24 hours of my trip. Meds, toiletries, a change of clothing or two and anything else that I know I will need.

Also in case of lost luggage I often switch pack with someone else. Meaning half my stuff goes in there suitcase and the other half is in mine. Half of their stuff is in my suitcase and the other half is in theirs. I even did this with friends when I flew on trips in high school and college as we wanted to ensure we had stuff in case our stuff was really delayed. Luckily I have never needed it but others on some of those trips lost there suitcase and some only had the clothing on there back and their carry on which did not contain any "essentials". They had to attempt to go shopping in our pre-planned busy schedule, not fun at all.

You will probably be fine but I highly suggest you take the stuff you might need for the 1st 24 hours in your carry-on.

Ok, seriously.... I think I'm done for the night.

Kate, I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Feel free to PM back, I'll be on the computer -- just elsewhere. I'll try and watch for notifications :goodvibes

Vicki- Is your Girl Scout council one of them that offers the Mackinac Island Honor Scout Program?

I have wanted to go to Mackinac Island since I saw it on an episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition. The family stayed there for the 7 days. The husband and wife went there for their honeymoon and all they could afford was to eat lunch there. I thought it was so cool that got to return for a whole week there with their family.

I'm way back, but had to show you my July 4th shopping haul.....

I got the comforter to match my curtains....

Naughty, naughty, but oh so worth it! My room is painted the color of Mickey's shoes and before I hung the drapes and got the new comforter, I was seriously considering repainting. Now I'll just add another coat of paint....

Tia I hadn't realized that you had a moving date yet. When is the big day? Have you found a job, house. Give us the low down.

Deb

It looks like Terra and I will fly out sometime around Aug 15. We are living with my parents for awhile until we get settled/money saved/etc. My other main reason for wanting to do that is to give my poor mom a break. I will get to take over the cooking, cleaning, pool and yard work for awhile as well as try to get her basement and garage cleaned out. Mom works at a grocery store, plus watches my sister's kids on the days she is off. Add to that trying to keep up with a 10yo at 50+yo and she's a little tired. More so, just doesn't have any free time to do the things she wants to do both alone and with my sister. I, luckily, don't have to look for a job. I am get to go back to staying home with Terra! And will also watch my sister's kids. We're working out a deal where she pays me a little less than she would the current babysitter saving her some money and giving me some Disney money. Phil is going to find a job as soon as we get there. Once we get settled to I am going to look into a few work at home ideas that I have had over the last few years to see if I can get something going for myself as well.
