The Canada Film at EPCOT

Having recently returned from WDW, I visited EPCOT for the first time since the late 80s...I was a little surprised and somewhat disappointed that the Canada film had not been updated!

Although it is a good film, I don't think it is a great film. I found it
to be somehow "missing" something (it didn't seem to have any story to tell, didn't seem to have any "soul", didn't stir the emotions that way I thought it would).

To me the most memorable scene involved the hundreds of geese in flutter.

I'm interested in learning... what do Cdns think of this film?

PS: The cheddar cheese soup at Le Cellier is awesome....but having travelled extensively all over Canada I must confess I've never seen this soup on a menu (I actually thought it was more of a Wisconsin thing)....any recommendations on where to find this stuff in Canada?

Hey Jersey Shark,
I too felt the same way as you. I saw it in the late 80's as well and was hoping it would have been updated. I've never had cheddar cheese soup but it sounds good. I have a link to a site made by an American transplanted here to Canada. She did a fabulous job on all things Canadian. I'll have to find it and I'll post the link.

It would be really nice if the Canada film could depict and past and present Canada. It would also be nice if they put some seating in there. Makes Canada look cheap!!!

Why they still have the CM's representing Canada wear those "PLAID SHIRTS"!

Regarding the Soup, must be a French Canadian Thing 'cause I have never heard of it here in Ontario!

I have relatives in Quebec and yes it is in alot of restaurants around them they live about 3 blocks from the old Montreal Forum and I can still remember going to visit and walking through the old building it was the off season and we could just walk in and tour the place man it still gives me shivers. As for the film this has been a topic alot of people have spoken of and the Canadian government is going to have to put up the money to update the film and that is likeley never going to happen we are spending to much money on other supid things but I am not going to get into that this is a fun place to visit not a political place to visit. The clothes they wear at the pavilions is to depict the old style of the country look at France and England and the US and Germany especially you realy don't often go to these places and see people dressed like that but the film could use some updating. I say we start a DIS petition to take to the IMAX company and see if we can have them make a new film for it now that would be awesome and since IMAX is a Canadian company developed and all here in Canada it shouldn't be that hard.

Well I'm an alumni of the Canada pavillon so I can speak on this. Candian visitors always give us a ribbing about the plaid shirts but they are "costumes" and most people understand that Canadians don't all dress like that. Also one theme of the pavillon is the northwest/hunting/fishing so the shirts fit in with that.

Also keep in mind all Norweigans don't walk around in their traditional dresses and in the UK they don't all look like barmaids. It's all about Disney theming.

As for the movie it all comes down to $$$$$. It would cost millions to update that movie and for Disney it is not a priority. An attraction like Mission: Space will attract visitors back to WDW who haven't been in years but a new Canada movie won't.

When I was there in 1998 there was talk of a new film for the Millennium celebration but that never panned out.

And the plaid shirts really aren't all that bad. If anyone remembers the old Le Cellier costumes (before the rehab of the Steakhouse) we looked like gigantic Strawberry Shortcakes.

I think I posted something on this after our last trip. The thing that got me the most was the impression that using a helicopter to heard elk was a common Canadian occupation. DH and I were ROFL for days over that one, but in a slightly uneasy, I hope no one thinks this is real, sort of way.

That movie is about as reflective of Canada as Pepe Lepew is of France. Surely it wouldn't be that expensive to update it a little. China got a new movie (it's fabulous, by the way).

I have to agree that the movie is really outdated. We were very surprised (disappointed) that there were no images of Niagara Falls, especially since it is one of the most famous part of our country.

You can buy canned cheddar cheese soup. I've had it once, that was enough. Mind you, the only way I like cr. of mushroom soup is in a casserole.

Disney theme park films are like men and our underwear. We don't get rid of them until they are in tatters and have become a pile of lint.

I wonder how expensive it can be to put that camera on a plane and have it fly around the country. They did it for China - updating their film. Disney theme parks make over one billion dollars a year in gross profits!

I do remember the former mayor of Ottawa making a play for a new film but I guess it didn't pan out. I don't watch the film anymore. It's faded and washed out and I think more of a detriment for Canada than a showcase of our country. It was never that terrific of a film, going by city by city across the country. A better focus would be on Canada's outdoors and all the thrilling activities one can do.

I live in Ontario and have been making my own chedder cheese soup for years. My dd now makes it for her family. It is one soup my ds will eat. We love it.

The film might be missing something... but the song in the movie is soooooooo awesome.... it made me feel ultra-patriotic when i heard it.

The movie most definitely needs to be updated.

They especially need to mention the West a little bit more... Canada does not revolve around Ontario and Quebec... (just the opinion of a Westerner!!!)

I have always been unhappy with the presentation at the Canadian pavillion. It has always seemed to me that unless you were from Canada, you would have difficuty knowing which part of the country they are depicting most of the time. They jump from one area to another and back again with little rhyme or reason. Personally I would have preferred them to start at one end of the country and proceed province by province to the other end.

But then again, it is hard to judge and be objective. Have you ever taken a guided tour of the area you live in? I took one of Montreal once and was astonished at how misinformed the guide was. It made me suspicious of all guided tours ever since.

I do like the song though, it always brings a lump to my throat.

I've always thought this was weird too ! I do love the song, although my french is really bad now, so I cannot figure out all of the words to the song -- makes it hard to sing 'cause I just start making up the lyrics.

Well, can I just say that when I see that movie it makes me proud that I will be (all being well) moving to such an amazing country. You couldn't make a film like that over here in the UK and make me feel proud.
