The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I saw In The Heights back in January and it's fantastic! Just a really fun show. My folks are both from the Bronx, and they said it was like watching a musical about their street growing up. I'm addicted to the cast album.

I have not seen Billy Elliot on Broadway yet, but I saw the London production twice and that is just a great show. I just read that one of the boys I saw in London (Tanner Pflueger) is now playing Billy on Broadway. He was terrific!

They have several kids rotating in that role because the dancing is so strenuous -which is why the main 3 boys got nominated for a joint Tony - and it's just an amazing show. Beautiful story, amazing dancing.

Have a great time!

I'm so glad to hear they were good! My cousin, aunt and grandma saw Billy Elliott a few weeks ago and loved it, so I'm looking forward to it! My friends and I went to the box office to pick up the tickets and the line was HUGE. there were a ton of people waiting on line for hours for cancellations for that night. It's crazy how big that show is right now!

We're also planning on getting tickets to Next to Normal for July, Rock of Ages for August (we saw it off-Broadway and LOVED it! The most fun I've ever had at a show!) and Wicked for the end of August. I'm still debating about Shrek. It looks good but I haven't read the best reviews. I haven't read the best reviews of Hair either, though, and we loved it so it all depends!

That's awesome. I saw it in London, and we went back the next night and saw it again, that's how much we enjoyed it. It was such a big hit there and in Sydney, but it took forever to get to Broadway - and it looks like it's doing just as well on here as everywhere else.

My sister saw it on Broadway a few months ago, she loved it too. I can't wait to see them performing on the Tonys next week!

I've heard Hair is terrific, as is Next to Normal. I wasn't interested in Rock of Ages initially, but I keep hearing how good it is so now I'm curious.

Coolest theater news I've heard this week is that Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig may be doing a play together in the fall. It's not officially announced yet, but how great would this be??

Seeing Billy Elliot on Fathers Day and lucked
out by going on telecharge a week ago and
getting orchestra row D seats!!!! Can't wait
to see it!!! Next I'd like to see South Pacific.:goodvibes

Has anyone seen Hair yet? My friends and I saw it on Thursday night and LOVED it! It was such a fun, upbeat show. It was very interactive with the cast out in the audience more than they were even on stage, and I somehow ended up in the show  I highly reccommend it! We also got tickets to In the Heights and Billy Elliott for within the next few weeks. Has anyone seen either one?

For anyone who's interested, the pre-Tony concert is on this weekend. It's on CBS tonight at 7:00 here in NY. They have the dates and times for other cities on the Tony's website. It'll features performances from Hair, Billy Elliott, Guys and Dolls, Shrek, 9 To 5 and more. Can't wait!

Darnit! I forgot to watch the concert.

I saw Hair last month and really enjoyed it. I would like to see it again someday and sit in the orchestra so I can be a part of the show too. We had balcony seats and all of the main cast came up there. Berger was standing on the railing right in front of me. And I caught a flower too.

Tickets go on sale for the 09-10 season next Sunday!

Avenue Q, baby. And Wicked (again, again!).

Is this for a local theater? That's so cool! Have you seen Ave Q? I saw it in Jan and it was cute! Not as hilarious as I expected but really entertaining!

I loved how they came out into the audience! I got pulled right in when I was coming back from intermission, and the spotlight turned right on me and Michael James Scott started kissing my hand, it was hilarious! What a fun show!

You have to see Rock of Ages! It's the most fun you'll ever have at a show. And Constantine has an AMAZING voice. Every single person I know who's seen it has said they had more fun than ever before. It's great! The Hugh Jackson show looks good too! I read about it a few days ago on Playbill.com. I'm also excited for the new Memphis (opening in Oct - it's like Smokey Joe's Cafe!) and Bye Bye Birdie with John Stamos. I saw him in Cabaret a few years ago and he was awesome! Love Uncle Jesse!

I saw Constantine on the Tonys concert on CBS tonight and thought he sounded really good! And I was never really a Constantine fan before (every time he mentioned being in Rent when he was on Idol part of me died a little inside), but the song they did was pretty cool. I'll have to check it out.

They haven't *officially* announced the Hugh Jackman/Daniel Craig play yet, it was just reported by a theater gossip column in the NY Post and all the news outlets picked it up from that. Last I heard Daniel Craig is officially signed on, but Hugh isn't yet...but that's going to sell out in about 10 seconds if it happens! And I'm soooo going to see that. ;)

I haven't had time to read this whole thread so my question may have already been discussed.

Has anyone seen 9to 5 yet? Have tickets for next weekend.

Hope it is good.

I saw 9 to 5 this week and thought it was so much fun!!! They are really true to the movie and all 3 girls are amazing. Megan Hilty has got Dolly Parton down. My friend and I won the lottery for it so was cheap too! But I'd see it again.

I saw the CBS concert last night and felt like the music overpowered some of the numbers. Think they needed to lower the volume on the background.

OK so I see most of you know all there is to know about Broadway...I am hoping you can help with this question.

I want to take my daughter to see Blythe Spirit at the Schubert on Broadway this summer but she really likes Angela Lansbury and I only want tickets to go if she is the one playing her part...like it would be just our luck that we would go and she would be off or on break that day and someone else was filling in for her. So how can I find out how to purchase tickets and make sure she is in the show for the day I purchase the tickets for.

Last time we booked a trip to Broadway, we live in the Lehigh Valley in PA, our trip was a bus trip and we had tickets for it for a while....Broadway went dark due to the stage hand strike and we had tickets for 42nd street....that same day my daughter had a dance class scheduled at one of the very prestigeous dance schools there and the dance professional never showed for the class.....so a whole day in New York and we had to rearrange our day. Luckily the Rockettes were still dancing and we had wonderful last minute seats for that show.;)

By the way I am a big musical fan.....LOved CATS saw it once in NY, once at a local theatre and have the DVD. Where I live the high schools choose to be judged on their high school musicals (The Freddy Awards) and because of that our high school musicals are becoming just about as good as going to Broadway (If you can't get to the real thing). I am not a fan of AIDA, WICKED, INTO THE WOODS, and PIPPIN but that's just because I saw them on stage at a high school...would go to a professional show to see if they are any better and if my opinion would change of them.

Yep, for the 09-10 season at PPAC! Avenue Q, Jersey Boys, Young Frankenstein, Wicked...

I haven't seen Avenue Q as of yet, but I've been dying to ever since I fell in love with the OBC recording!

Hi! Here's a website with some basic understudy information.

http://www.broadwayunderstudies.com/dates.php

It's really hard to know in advance who will be out, though, unless it's a long-term scheduled leave of absence. Usually understudies don't know they're going on until the day before, or even the morning of, the performance. Odds are that Angela will be in the show since it's new and she really only began recently, but it's not 100%. I'd go for it though!

So cool! How does that work, do you get tickets for all four shows? You're gonna love Ave Q, it's really unique

I'm in p'burg nj...the freddys are great, aren't they!! There is a lot of local talent in this area. We see broadway shows often but not sure if you can
found out about a definite on a certain actor/actress performing. I know
with Jersey Boys, Jarred Spector, the main character, doesn't do the saturday
afternoon shows but then does perform in the evening show. Maybe you can
try calling the box office and see if they can help.

Hi SharonW, The Freddies are great I am so addicted to the video of "South Pacific" that Emmaus did at the Freddy's and the guy that sings "Maria" in the Boys Medley.(This years Freddy's)..I am always switching to the website to watch. I am gearing up for the next season. Anyone wants to watch you need to go to the wfmz website and click on the "Freddy Awards" and watch the videos, some are the awards being given out but some are the numbers done on stage....the best is the "Opening" "South Pacifc" "Boys Medley" "Girls Medley" "The Wizard of Oz" and the "Closing".

Well I guess I will just take my chances and get tickets to "Blythe Spirit" I am told it is very good. I'll let you all know if we get to see it with Angela Lansbury.

Amazingly enough, I've heard nothing but good things about Shrek.

Same here...everyone I know that has seen it has said it was really good!! Go figure. Kat wants to see Next to Normal when we're there in August but we won't have time. But, we are seeing Hair!! That is going to be terrific!!

I received an e-mail today from playbill that says Blythe Spirit
with Angela Lansbury is over in six wks, not sure if it meant she is done
or the actual broadway playis closing. Hopefully you are seeing it before the six wks time frame.

I heard Hair was awesome! I really want to see it.

Hugh Jackman was on ET earlier tonight with some good news - he's definitely doing that play with Daniel Craig this fall! I'm saving my money for that right now! :cool1:

Unless you buy the Season Subscription, no. (And we're not, it's too expensive). That's just the major shows that are coming. But I've been dying to see Avenue Q for years now, so yay!
