The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Just came back from seeing Next to Normal. It is an awesome, moving show. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. The whole house literally leaped up as one to give the cast a standing ovation.

I went with my sister who had seen it a month ago. I insisted she spoil the show, and I wish I hadn't. It would have been better to experience the shock as the story unfolded.

It sounds amazing! My cousin, friend and I are planning on getting tickets for the middle of July. I was really hoping to see it with Aaron Tveit but he's leaving the show for the summer. I still think Billy Elliott is going to win Best Musical tomorrow, but I wouldn't rule out a Next to Normal upset!

When you get tickets, don't worry about trying to get seats close to the stage. The set has three levels so being in the back orchestra or mezzanine will give you better view of the stage without giving you cricks in your neck. We sat on the third row right and my neck still hurts.

As for Tonys, I think BE is the heavy favorite but it won't surprise me if Next to Normal wins.

Aaron Tveit was amazing, but I still heart Matt Cavenaugh from West Side Story more.

Does anyone own the soundtrack for In the Heights? How is it? I'm considering buying it. I've heard nothing but great things about this show!

I just got it the other day! My friend and I are going to see it this Thursday and I'd only heard a few of the songs before so I decided to check it out. It's really good... I like it a lot more than I expected to!

I bought the soundtrack about a month ago, and it's fantastic! I can't wait to see it next February when it comes to Pittsburgh. I already put in my order for a block of 50 tickets so I can get a group discount.

Watching the Tonys now.....and I'm adding so many more shows to my "must see" list. Rock of Ages and Guys and Dolls :thumbsup2

I saw Spring Awakening twice this past week. AWESOME is all I can say about it!

Next to Normal sounds like it will be really neat. Hopefully it won't take too long to tour.

loved the Tony's tonight!! i loved seeing all of the performances.

Except the Billy Elliot performance...i mean, really? They couldn't have chose, i dunno, ANY OTHER SCENE over the spastic tap dancing?? i've never seen the show, but there had to have been something better!!

and oh how i love Neil Patrick Harris. :lovestruc

I loved Neil's closing number. lolol!

Well...it's called "Angry Dance" for a reason. And it's also one of the best scenes in the show, so I was psyched they did that.

Billy is really going through hell by the time that scene happens - his mother is dead, his father just screwed him out of a chance to audition for the Royal Ballet, there's a miners strike going on that's got his father and brother so busy he's been largely ignored by both of them for months. Neither of them have even seen him dance.

He runs into his room and starts throwing stuff around, and it falls into Angry Dance, by the end of it he's out in the street in the middle of a police/miner riot. (and when I saw it, it wasn't "screw you!" he yelled at the riot police ;) )

That scene is amazing.

Bummer! I shut the TV off before NPH did his final number. He is adorable! I'll have to catch it on You Tube today.

I saw Spring Awakening about two weeks ago when the tour came to Pittsburgh. I really enjoyed it. I saw it opening night. Two days later, I was at the Thursday afternoon matinee for "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". As I was waiting to be seated, I noticed a few 20-somethings searching for their seats. I thought they looked familiar......it was the cast of Spring Awakening!!!

Turns out they were seated right behind our seats! They seemed stunned, and then thrilled, to be recognized. I told them how much I loved their show and that they did a fantastic job. They were very gracious and glad that I enjoyed it. :) Still kicking myself that I didn't ask to get a picture taken with them. :sad2:

Whoever the sound guy was for the Tony's should be shot. SO many sound errors/problems.

Anywho, I don't get all the hype for Billy Elliot. Everything I've seen/heard of it, I haven't been thrilled. Like the Tony performance... I bet it is amazing live, but out of context like that, it did nothing to intrigue me to see the show.

SO thrilled for Hair though. I'm living in NYC for the summer, and you can bet I will be trying to win the lotto tix as many times as I can XD

If any of you are going to be in NYC on Friday, June 19th, and are interested in seeing Altar Boyz, please let me know. I'm organizing a mother/daughter Girl Scout trip to NYC for a few days, and I might have 4 extra tickets for the show.

The seats are excellent (4th row!) and a great price ($35 each!!). Two of the families are thinking about opting out of the show because that is our only free time during the trip, and the girls really want to go to the American Girl store.

PM me if you're interested. Thanks!

Just wanted to add: I know in the community theater circles I run around in I'm in the minority, but I liked the musical Cats!

I know I'm just now finding this thread but I just need to say, with all sadness and earnestness, that I am shattered. Utterly shattered.

Just closed a community theatre Broadway review - vignettes from a number of shows. It was really quite good and a lot of fun (I play in the pit for these shows rather than as a member of the cast). But we did close with our Andrew Loud Webbey salute. Next up, The King and I.

Definitely go see Hair! It's the most fun show I've seen in a while... that and Rock of Ages!

Yikes, did everyone hear that Brett Michaels broke his nose during that opening number scenery mishap last night?

Another moment I liked during the Tonys was Greg Jbara (he won Best Featured Actor for Billy Elliot) acknowledging the standbys/understudies for Billy and Michael who weren't nominated. Right now those kids are all rotating in the main roles, so they're not really understudies or standbys anymore. It was nice to see them get acknowledged too.

One of the boys he mentioned, Tanner Pflueger, played Billy when I saw the show in London. He was amazing!
