~The BOT Battalion~ BOTS On The Run

OMG!! You guys are totally cracking me up! Rabbit knees! Hahaha!!! I kind of wish I did -- then crouching, lunging and jumping wouldn't be totally out of the question for me.

Okay, here is the report: I’m doing okay. Coping with the mental part is more difficult than I’d have thought. My knee isn’t destroyed or anything like that, but the surgery it would take to repair this is more significant than if I’d “just” torn my meniscus. But I’m passing on the surgery and shot options that are the first and second-line options for this type of injury in the hopes that PT 3x/week will get me back to running, instead of me spending time recovering.

The best way to describe it is a lesion on the cartiladge with specific damage to the cartiladge at the weight-bearing part between the femur and tibia, if I’m remembering the layperson explanation correctly. The goal at this point is to strengthen the quad muscles so much that the knee cartiladge does minimal work with the quads doing all the "heavy lifting".

Yesterday's therapy included lots of manipulation and measurement, then exercising the quad (he was impressed I was able to do the reps with no problems so he hopes this won't be a "long haul") first flat, then with a foam football under the knee, then a large roller under the knee to increase the intensity. Then he hooked up a tens unit to the side of the knee and wrapped most of my leg in a new electric ice compression contraption that has been extensively and very successfully used in the Baltimore Ravens trainers room -- GameReady.

I am hoping to be able to ride a stationary bike next week. BTW, an MRI of the knee is a fascinating thing (all except the part where instead of bright white cartiladge there was grey, “marbled”-looking fuzziness – LOL!). Oh, and he made me promise not to do anything that impacts on my knee with my personal trainer tomorrow -- said to give him at least a week before I do anything outside his guidance.

My knee hurt worse last night than it had for a couple of days, but that may also be part of the process, I guess.

Hugs to all -- really looking forward to seeing many of you at Fall races, even if my view is of you zipping past me rather than zooming ahead of me! :cool1:

Wow guys, lots to reply to, but i'm too lazy tonight.

I will say that I'm happy that everyone's posting again!!

More tomorrow.

Judy - Nice one!

Cam - You're one brave soldier! I'm sure if hard work is all that is needed for your recovery you are just the person for that job. Be sure to keep us updated on your progress.

Howard - Feel free to paint my stuff after you've powerwashed it too.:thumbsup2 Oh, and I'm sure vegetaraSara is going to take you up on the hot dog offer. Those bean sprout types just LOVE nitrate infused animal scraps.

Dave - Here's hoping your shin(s) will behave.

Jodi - You suck!

And by "You Suck!" of course I mean that you are a gentle soul and a pleasure to be around.

My schedule called for 7 miles with the middle 5 being at tempo pace. Unfortunately, my body called for 7 miles with 1 being at tempo pace and the other 6 trying not to die.

See ya.

Hello friends!:grouphug:

I am back...best vacation ever!!!! :dance3: We had a great family vacation on the cruise, which seems so long ago.:confused3 We then met up with Mike's family at Disney and crammed many fun-filled hours in together before Mike had to get back to work. Thank you Mike and Kathy for sharing some of your vacation time with us. We had a fabulous time.:cheer2:

More later.

Hi to everyone!

Cam
I hope the knee pain is lessening and PT gets everything back in racing condition.

Mike and Colleen
Glad you are both back. Sounds like everyone had a great time. I really miss summer vacations.

Jodi
Gentle soul and a pleasure to be around? Jodi?

Cindy and Matt
I caught some of your pictures on Facebook. I like pudding too.

Best wishes to all the other Bots.

Chester

2 confessions:

1. I haven't run since before I left for Japan.

2. I am very behind on the thread.

(posting from iPhone while in meeting)

Well, there's your problem. Rabbit knees.

:lmao:

:rolleyes1

:rotfl::rotfl: Hi Judy!

Feeling a little more rested today. I spent ALL day yesterday doing laundry. 11 days of vacation creates a lot of dirty clothes. Jeff even did 3 loads on the trip too.

Cindy, love your pics on FB.

Dave, your pics are great too, Williamsburg is on our list to do too!

Chester, nice to see you around again. See Jodi, I told you the thread will pick up once summer is over.

Jodi, I sent you an email. Are you ignoring me?:confused3

Hi Lou, Cam, Howard, and CindyLouwho!

I will try and get out to do 3 or 4 miles today, maybe with the kids.

Good Morning Everyone: OK, I'm getting back on the training horse this week - even with some shin soreness. I ran in the Thursday night cross-country race last night in the park next to our neighborhood. Thursday nights in August they always have these races, and I've been running in them for about 3 years now. My only goal was to run the whole thing with no walk breaks. I wanted to take it easy, and not hurt my shin any further. I bought those lower leg sleeves to try to support my shins. Anyhow the race started at 7pm. They fired the gun, and off I went. I settled in at the very back of the pack, and just ran my slow pace. Hit the 1 mile mark right at 8:00 min :scared1: . Wha??? I'm at the back of the pack, haven't run much the past month, have a bum shin, running really slowly (at least I thought I was), and I am running an 8 mpm pace??? [Also, how fast are those guys up front running in this local race?] Anyhow, I met my goal of running the whole thing without stopping, and finished in 27:10 min. I was happy with that. My shin is a little sore this morning - so I'm icing it, and I'll bike today.

Sorry that was so long winded...

Colleen- Welcome back from a great vacation.

Cindy- I didn't run much in July either. You're not missing much... I'm loving your Japan pictures. Those gardens were amazing.

Hello Chester :wave2:

Jodi- Have a great time this weekend. Good luck with the race.

Mike- Nice job with any type of tempo run. You are doing better than I.

Hello Sara- hope all is well with the family.

Cam- Thanks for checking in. Good luck with your PT, and it would be wonderful to see you sometime this fall.

Greetings Howard

Hello Lou- Your running is an inspiration.

Hello Judy :wave2: you can post here anytime.

My best to anyone else I missed - Jen, CindyLou, DKP. Hope you all are well.

Hey Guys!
It's been a while since I have posted anything worth reading here, but I'll give it a shot today:

Dave - Terrific job on that run - I'm diggin' that pace. Massage the crap out of that shin, please, b4 it gets any worse. Glad you're back from your vacation, by the looks of it you guys had a great time!! Any decisions about any fall races for you??:rolleyes1

Lou - Where ya been? Still banging your head against the wall about this Michael Vick crap?:scared1: Seriously? What are your boys in green thinkin'? How's the fundraising going? The 3 of us will DEFINITELY ride that ferry over in the a.m. :woohoo:!!

Colleen - Welcome home!:yay: Love the pictures you're posting on FB, keep 'em coming! Looks like you had a blast. Have you booked your flights to NYC yet? So whad'a'ya wanna do while in the Big Apple?? popcorn::

Mike - Welcome home, for a bit - taking a respite from your vacation for your ASPCA court dates? You know, it's still not too late to donate. $5 for an old lady running in the sweltering heat Sunday? Cheap-O. Just buy one less friggin' box of popcorn down in Disney next week!:sad2: Bad runs lately? Hmmm, bad karma?

Judy - :lmao::rotfl2::thumbsup2. Now go back to your fluorescent WISH thread!!:3dglasses

Chester - Duuuude! Training for meg-races this fall, are we? How're you feeling anyway? Any tips for running in that hot crap - seein' as you do it every day! And yes, I'm a very gentle soul :littleangel:. Ahem...

Mindy aka Non-running slug!:dance3: Get to it! Oh please, why on earth would you run while on such a spectacular vacation? Waiting for more awesome photos on FB popcorn::.

Mr. Blandings - How's the renovation coming along? Running? Pain-free? popcorn::

Sara - Running? How are your legs feeling? Decided on/if a fall race?popcorn::

Cam - Way to put up the good fight, woman!! I can't believe you're having such issues, but admire your tenacity to get it healed. Please keep us updated & visit often to vent/share good news!!

Hi to all of you I forgot :headache:.

Thanks for the well wishes for Sunday. It's gonna be a bit warm, so I'm not expecting any miracles. I'll just run as best I can. Go to www.nyrr.org, find the 1/2 marathon link & punch my name in to track me if you want a good laugh Sunday a.m.! I'll check in when I get home that evening!:grouphug:

Dave - Any decisions about any fall races for you??:rolleyes1
It's between doing the half in Baltimore and the Race for the Taste in Disney. My sister really wants us to come out to Baltimore. I want to go to Disney, but don't know if I can afford it. I need a "research" trip though to get some more material for blogs and podcast segments.

I also need to get my girls running again. Our pediatrician is concerned about their BMIs going up again. I was thinking that taking Maggie (DD11) for a Daddy/Daughter trip for the Race for the Taste would be motivating enough to get her moving. Baltimore?? I'm not sure that's enough of a draw for her.

Yo BOTheads!

I'm signing up for the Las Vegas marathon today (price goes up tomorrow).

Jodi
Tips for running in the heat and humidity: Lower your expectations. Since I use heart rate training, I typically don't obsess about time or speed. But, I do carefully monitor heart rate and work at maintaining those goals. When it's hot and humid your heart rate increases over the same effort that would be used in cooler/dryer weather. I adjust my effort to get the heart rate results I want. That way I'm consistent on the cardio workout I do, even though the pace is reduced.

Make sure you are hydrated(duh). This time of year I'm saturated in sweat by 4 miles. My socks get so wet that my shoes make a squishing noise on impact. I plan out intermediate water stops for double digit runs. I also know where I can water up in-between if needed. Typically I train with a whole lot less water/sports drink than I would use during a race, so that the race conditions will seem pleasant.:confused3

Good luck Sunday

Dave
Come on down for the Race for the Taste. Do you think Maggie would be ready for a 10k?

Run happy ya'll

Chester

Jodi -- Good luck, Sunday! I have been thinking of you so much. Thank you for running for such a worthy cause. Take good care of yourself during the race. You don't have to PR it. It is already a "BEST" because of what you have accomplished in your fundraising. Sending you huge hugs and lots of nice, cool thoughts.

Hi, everyone! Physical therapy kicked my butt this morning. I can't believe I was going to ask him if it would cause further damage if I put in some miles tomorrow morning before 8:30 PT. Right now, it hurts to walk to the ladies' room.

But on a brighter note -- Jenn comes home today!!!! She left January 26 for the Disney College Program, and I will honestly admit that I doubted whether she'd make it to her original end date of June 4; because of her work performance and excellent reputation, when she applied for an extension, she was extended to 8/14. The level of disclipine and commitment required to be a Walt Disneyworld Lifeguard is so far beyond what I would have expected and she not only rose to the occasion, but surpassed all expectations. Last count I remember, she had 14 documented "saves" and many, many assists. I am so stinkin' proud of her!!

Talk to you all soon. Have a GREAT weekend everyone. I'll be thinking of all of you getting your miles in, and WISHing I were cooking for all of your carb loads. :) :goodvibes

Dave

Chester
No, I don't think she'd be ready for the 10k, but I see they have a 3k and she could run that. I'm trying to think if I could do the 10k and her do the 3k, but I'm not sure logistically if it would work.

Cam, you should be proud of your sweet girl!!! You and Howard are great parents!!

Jodi, good luck with the race!! You will be fine, take it nice and easy. Enjoy the scenery. I probably won't get a long run in until Sunday because I am fighting a head cold. I will be thinking of you too!:yay:

Wow, CHester another marathon. Great job. Can't wait to hear all about it. My sister ran it a few years ago, but she didn't give much detail. I talk to my bot friends more than I talk to her.

Mike, Kathy's pictures on facebook are SO cute!! I bet you are counting down the days to get back down there.

Welcome back Cindy and Matt! Love your pictures too! What an amazing trip.

DH and I are thinking about going overseas next summer for a few weeks. I guess I should start planning now, I don't know where to start. Pick a country, any country...

Quick post...

Jodi - Good luck today. I imagine it will be a tough run with heat/humidity.

Cam - Sorry about the knee but glad to hear you are on the comeback trail.

Colleen - Awesome pics on FB of the cruise.

Cindy & Matt - Loved the Japan pics...especially the gardens and super-toilet.

Hey Sara, Dave, Howard, CindyLou, Chester, Mike (loved the Optimator pic on FB), Jen

Got in 12 this morning in NASTY heat/humidty. It didn't help that I fattened up all day yesterday on boardwalk food.

I officially signed up for the PDR this week.

Lou

Hey Everyone: I've decided to take it easy on my legs again. Instead of running yesterday I did a 30 min - aqua-jog (i.e., swog) in the pool. I really want to get these lower legs healed up so I can start training for Goofy in January ;) .

Jodi, congrats on another half-marathon under your belt!!:dance3:Can't wait to hear about it!

I honor of your accomplishment today, I decided to restart marathon training (since I only have 9 or 10 weeks left:rolleyes:and I really haven't put in many miles the last month:eek::rolleyes1). The entire family, kids on bikes, DH and I went out for a 10 miler today. I finished it, it wasn't pretty, but it is done. I think the plan calls for 12, or well.:confused3

Hi to everyone.

Dave, thanks for the reminder of swogging, I need to get in the pool again too. My knee will love me for it.

Cam and Howard, I hope your family had a happy homecoming celebration this weekend.:grouphug:
