The Battle For My Wallet IV: Return of the ZZUBs (Addendum, p.85; 07/12)

My wife read this chapter last night and she said it was quite a departure from the rest of my Trip Report where any criticism I’ve leveled has been tempered with humor. Several of you have responded to this chapter with the same concern that it was overly negative. One person was made “numb” by it.

Let me say outright that I am not anti-Disney all of a sudden. I was not in a rage when I wrote this chapter, nor was I in a rage that night at Crystal Palace. While I was admittedly disappointed by the poor service we’d received and the mediocre food we'd eaten, I was not actually in a rage.

Nor does this have anything to do with money. I would have been equally annoyed had I received wrong answers from PORiverside cast members. For me, this is about candidly assessing what our trip to Disney World was like and the value we received for our money.

A growing trend that concerns me is that expectations are being raised to stratospheric levels and the end result is that more and more people are disappointed after their vacations. Some people become obsessed with receiving the same type of special treatment they’ve read about. They hunt for the elusive “magic.” And when they don’t get to wake up Tink, or they don’t get to ride in the front of the Monorail, their trips are ruined. The expectations for a Disney vacation are lofty enough without adding the additional layer of internet-induced fanaticism on top of it.

Our Trip Reports tend to focus on the highlights. We naturally don’t report about every instance when our children are less than sublime or our spouses don’t move as quickly as we want them to. For instance, in our house, my daughter has what is known as the “fuss about Mickey” that I’ve never written about and never will. But amongst my family, we all remember what happened that night. My sister’s family has the “Contemporary Scene of 2004.” In other words, our trips aren’t perfect. Bad and disappointing things happen to us, too. And yet, by not reporting some of the more negative aspects of our trips, I think we leave the impression to many readers that our trips are superlative and perfection can be achieved at Disney World. It can’t.

And while it is true that for our family, our vacation began when we arrived at the Wilderness Lodge, it would be incorrect and inaccurate to surmise that our problems ceased to exist in the same moment. I'll say again, it isn't really a magic kingdom.

Recently, I have seen reports of people who are sincerely disappointed after they return because their trip just didn’t measure up. Therefore, I wrote about my disappointment with the diminution of Disney’s service in an attempt to present a more accurate picture of what our trip was like. It was not a reflection of any rage, sadness, remorse, pissiness, grumpiness or any other ness. I think people should know what they’re buying when they plan a Disney vacation and Chapter Thirteen (no offense Chapter 11) was a digest of a snapshot in time. We are not fictional characters who vacation on Fantasy Island. But much in the same way that guests of Fantasy Island discovered their fantasies weren’t all they hoped they would be, our trips to Disney World are not perfection.

Although Tonga Toast comes remarkably close.

No explanations necessary but well said nevertheless. ;)

I think what surprised me is that I'm used to reading your reports and feeling happy and laughing aloud and enjoying your moments that you convey so well. Then you reversed the feelings, not the style or writing, and caught us off guard with a negative day.

We all have them. Even at WDW. But we have a saying. A day in the "rain", "cold", or "insert negative day name here" at WDW is better than a day in the "rain", "cold", or "insert negative day name here" at home.

On my vacation, I was a little concerned that my 4 children didn't behave like the ones on the Disney Vacation Planning DVD. And that I couldn't play the air-bongos quite as well as freckle-nosed Erin. I did encounter my share of clueless CM's. Sometimes I think Disney should consider cost effective trained monkeys or animatronics :confused3 . OR, they could get what they pay for and raise the quality a smidge.

Many of my friends came back from Disney full of disappointment and wondering where all the "magic" was hidding, so perhaps there is a need to have a more realistic approach to trip reporting. I posted my scrapbook version of our trip report and definately underplayed some of our non-disney like scenes from our vacation, however, I read trip reports more to visit my happy place not a realistic review of Disney performance which I find plenty of on the other more specific threads.

I would think that the majority of DIS'ers run in the category of people who find child-like magic wherever they travel or reside and that for the most part Disney fits the bill of encourgaging us to release our inner child. This was the only vacation that my children talk about constantly almost a year later so regardless of cost those folks are doing many things above and beyond normal (lack of) customer service.

Trip Reporting is a very interesting way to practice your style on your audience. I think you got so much shocked response since you are out of your internet character. Perhaps you could post chapters under Zurg for more dark side of your Disney Vacation. That would be Gruz for you...

Now back to our beloved cartoon and cheesesteak loving, well grounded, faith inspiring trip reporting that we all so desperately need from you Zzub.

That's VERY funny. And for what it's worth, I was on Ebay the other day and saw someone selling Fastpasses. No lie.

You caught me. ;)

Actual E-bay auction. FOFF!

No way.

Okay, that's just way too freaky borg. Even for me. I'm gonna go shave my head and start posting under the name RAEYTHGIL.

Or am I?

Actually I'm kidding. I'm not shaving my head and we don't have a fuss about Mickey thing that we've kept under wraps. No we don't. The LaLas have something much worse. It's a lil sumpm sumpm I like to call the Boma Breakfast Buttwhuppin'.

And all alliteration aside, like the fuss about Mickey, you'll never catch the details of that one in my trip report either.

You know, I'm pretty sure if we thought about it long and hard, every single person on this board could come up with at least one not so magical moment that they've experienced on a vacation to Disneyworld. Between the lofty expectations, crowded conditions, and a hundred other factors, it happens. It does. It's inevitable. In our trip reports, we tend to keep the bad stuff to ourselves and focus on the good because that's what we want to remember. But it's also important to remember that it's not always all pixiedust and magic. Things sometimes go wrong. And as much as we may love vacationing there, the fact of the matter is that Disneyworld is not perfect. Somebody I know once said perfect is not for this side of Heaven anyway. Truer words have never been spoken.

Especially when you only wind up with silver.

Not that I would know how that feels.

Thanks for keepin' it real, my friend.

:drive: :drive: :drive: :drive:

The car guy. It's the new moped.

No way ZZUB, I'm loving your reports! I even mentioned you in the one I just wrote of our trip. (CP review) but we all have imperfect vacations and it is the reality of it. The fact that in the end you still love Disney and smile when you think of it.. heck, you can be upset by unknowledgable CMs, foamy eggs & gravy that needs more salt (oh thats me).

:D

I would like to say thank you for including your less than magical experience because I do think it is important for the less Disney experienced to see the good and the bad of Disney. I am making it a point to include all of our negative moments in my trip report. The fact that they were mostly caused by my DH or my obsessive personality is really just beside the point, right? ;)

As always, great job on the trip report!

OK, I took that way wrong. I'm glad that you posted the not so good, too. I've been trying to decide if I will write a trip report because I'm afraid that it will look like a negativity soap opera. Well, I'm really afraid that my DD will write something really weird in the posts. ;)

Zzub-

Thank you for posting that installment. You wrote what DH and I felt after returning from our trip to WL in Dec.

The magic was missing.:sad1:

I wanted to write a trippie-like this one or Mel's or LaLa's but I couldn't.

Not because I am not that talented. I am.:teacher:

But because I could not bring myself to dis Disney. Which I felt I would be doing.

We hyped this trip up so much after a difficult year-a failed adoption, surgery, problems with family. We needed this vacation. To "save" us a little. Put our universe back in order.

It didn't.

It wasn't bad nor do I feel anger or rage about it. But it just wasn't what I wanted or hoped it would be. I just didn't feel the magic. At all. I tried.

We as a family have decided to take a vacation from the Mouse for a while. Do more cruises. Enjoy being a family. Together. Not stressed.

So I'll just say-I feel you Zzub. Mad props to you.

Looking forward to reading more.

Good thoughts and wishes for Mrs. Zzub and baby Yolanda.:wizard:

:moped: :moped: :moped:

Z it was the lack of silliness, I think.

Also I don't see what got everyone's panties in a wad, you're really not that negative. We have all noticed the decline. It makes me sad too. Also there was some FOF (NOF) Funny stuff in there.

Zzub-

I have been a tough year and as my wife VernRDH said the “magic” was not there. I am planning two 2007 getaways and a 2008 “total family blockbuster” vacation I have spent the last several weeks worrying about getting my money’s worth, translation paralyzed from making any meaningful vacation decisions, due to this Disney funk. Thank you Zzub , for putting your finger on the problem. Keep up the good, honest work.

….don’t let them get you down about your new coach, throw a pile of money at me and I would coach in hell or Auburn.

:fish:

I didn't find the last chapter negative, but rather it was honest. And I appreciate that. That is what I'm looking for is some of the funny moments to share, and some honest perspective. We've never done Crystal Palace as a buffet. That is how long it has been since I was there, it was still a cafeteria. And I was in elementary school. Now my DD is! Now I know the food is average and the interaction is hit or miss. It means I may choose to repeat the Garden Grille in Epicot, because our visits there have been GREAT!

And most of us on DIS know that the magic comes from special moments that just happen, and not necessarily because someone did something. They just happen. I'll never sit down for a full report - so I'll quickly share. I will never, every forget in our trip in June being on the MK bus heading back to BCV near midnight. And seeing my 6 year old DD fall asleep on the bus with her 4 year old sister in her lap and arms. And both fell asleep. And yet, her arms still tightened around her sister at every curve, keeping her from falling down. In her sleep. That, my friends, is magic.

Oh - and we're seriously thinking about the Nick Jr. Suites for an upcoming visit. For the same reasons everyone has already mentioned!

No explanation needed. I am a real fan of your trip reports and I love everything you have to say about Disney b/c a lot of times, its on par with what my DBF and I think about it.

We will continue to go back again and again b/c we love it. We love that sense of carelessness you get when you've entered the property. Even getting to MCO is amazing to me.

But I do agree with you as far as the staff (not CMs) are concerned. I specify the difference b/c to me, the CMs are the great ones, the ones that go out of their way to make your day magical. The type of people I've come to expect at WDW. I have seen the other half way to often for my liking. Its ruined a few great moments. We've even had to complain a few times, like the time that we were taking the tram from from the parking lot into Epcot and an off duty staff member still in uniform was sitting on his car talking to another on duty staffer blasting music and cursing. The music was filled with not the best language either. We were upset and kept telling ourselves that if this was our first trip how disappointed we would be. But honestly even after all the trips that we've taken WE were disappointed too. Shocked really.

I think WDW is about something bigger than a theme park though. FOr you - its your sense of family. I'm not sure exactly why I keep going back, but I will continue to. And I'll try to remember all the great moments a little more than the bad

Zzub, I always enjoy your writing and this honest assessment is no different. Of course, I bet most of your readers think of you as Mr Disney (I DO) and never expected this type of report. You really hit on two Major points, one being the decline in service and the other being the ever increase in prices, something that gets even the loyal to take a long hard look at exactly what kind of value they are receiving for the gobs and gobs of hard earned dollars that disney these days demands. I look forward to your next installment regardless of where you take us! :thumbsup2

Word.

I haven't posted on your TR yet, but I've read every word. I'm posting now to let you know that your 'reality check' installment was great. Here on the boards, we do tend to focus on all that Disney Magic, and sweep the not-so-magical stuff under the virtual carpet. We all have had bad experiences at Disney, but few of those experiences make it to the boards. It's refreshing to read an honest report. Thanks for taking the time to share your vacation with us.

-Michelle

P.S. And for the record - we lost our battle of the wallet with Mickey. Big time. :sad2:

Thank you once again Mr. ZZUB for sharing your trip highlights (and low lights). You still crack me up no matter which tone you take. You're still THE MAN in my book!!

IMHO, you may have experienced an overload of what we call at my house...the general public experience. We are in no way snobs, nor do we live in excess (far from it I might add)- it just seems that there is a lack of CIVILITY and COMMON SENSE these days. I know, it was the sister clueless at WL that got ya started ....but, I think maybe it was the rest of the clueless "cousins" you were vacationing with that sealed the deal.

Maybe we just got lucky on our last vacation (Sept.06), maybe it was the fabulous feeling derived from free food (that I didn't have to cook), or maybe it was the fact that Disney is at least a cut above the horrid customer service we usually deal with on a day to day basis in the real world, but..we seemed to have good dealings with CM's -some even great!

For us, that not so magical experience only happened when viewing those not so magical guests. Oh, the wonders of this sometimes....it can be an attraction in itself sometimes. Just make sure to ride something happy afterwards to forget this.

I also now am fully aware and utilize to my knowledge that most on this dorky DIS board (and yes, if you are reading this, you are a DORK!) know more than probably 80% of the people working at DW about how things operate there. Sad, but true. It's the American way, spilling over into DW unfortunately.

Trust yourself ZZUB.... when in doubt, ask another family who appears to be just a bit dorky...they just might be a member of the DIS....

and then you're with FAMILY:thumbsup2
