The bar is there for a reason- grocery shopping vent- long

When the lady said something about you playing with her food, you should have picked up the box of crackers and licked it. Wonder what she would've said then? :p

I always go ahead and just put the plastic or wooden bar up, even if no one is behind me.

I don't really get too upset about it, but a couple of months ago, I happened to go through the self check out lane - scanned my stuff, paid and proceeded to the end to bag my stuff, this guy comes up and started scanning his stuffand sending id down the belt. Meanwhile, I was trying to bag my few items as quickly as possible, but here is this stuff coming down the belt at me. I was miffed, to say the least. Finally, I looked up at him and said would it kill you to wait until I was done? He just looked at me like I was from Mars.

I also like to have all the refrigerated items together and so on - like items like pet food, cleaning items I also like to keep together, but I am crazy and OCD and I know it.
I can handle putting the bar up in front or behind, it is the stinking rude people that drive me bananas, you know the ones, the ones that act like they are the only ones that count and you should be getting out of their way.

LOL this whole thread is cracking me up, especially the little shake your crackers ditty!

I always put the bar down when im done putting up my groceries, and most people around here do the same.

Also at our self check lines there is another spacer bar at the bagging section to put up so the next persons stuff doesn't get mixed in with yours while you are bagging....

The way it worked is the basket bottom height was higher than a traditional basket...when you rolled the basket to the checkout and dropped the front of the basket, the checker simply reached in to grab the items and scan them-but that was a store that had another person bagging the groceries-something not seen much anymore.

Ok this would drive me nuts, I have to put my groceries on the belt the way I would like them bagged LOL :rotfl:
Frozen and cold items together...cans and heavy items together...bread and eggs in the back...LOL

I always put it behind my things. I unload the food standing in front of the cart, then step behind the empty cart and push it forward so that the person behind me can begin to unload. I have been known to be a bit abrupt when the person in front of me doesn't use the bar with a "Do you suppose you could put the bar behind your stuff so I can unload mine?"

I don't get the woman going off about you touching the cracker box??? Lordy, those are double protected behind the cardboard and then the wrapper. Perhaps if you had touched her grapes or squeezed her melons (sorry, had to).

Don't worry - if for some reason the bar does not end up on the belt to separate our groceries, I promise not to pay for yours!

Okay.....I have to ask this question....is North Carolina the ONLY state where the cashiers remove the food items from the shopping cart for you?

This fascinates me. I don't know why...it just does. I've lived here ALL my life, so when I visit my in-laws in Michigan I'm amazed that NONE of the grocery stores have the cashiers removing the items from the cart, you have to put it all in and then get it all back out.

The only place here that does that is Harris Teeter.

Also, can I just tell you all that we went grocery shopping today and I was under great stress as to what to do with 'the bar.' I ususally don't put it behind my stuff unless someone is right there. I don't understand why you would put it there if no one is in line behind you :confused3 Now if we could just get people to return their carts! Ugh! That's a whole other thread :rotfl: I've got some funny stories for that one :rotfl:

OMG!!!

Poor OP I am sorry you had to extend your arm to separate your groceries from the grocieries of the person in front of you.

Oh, no, let's not go there!!! I remember when that was discussed here on the DIS. :rotfl:

it infuriates me when people are obnoxious like that! i would have been so mad. i usually think it's the responsibility of the next person to put down the bar, EXCEPT when the bar is out of their reach - then the first person should put it down for them.

This is what gets me to! It never fails when I use the self check out that some jerk comes right behind me and here comes their food piling up with mine! I've started putting their food on the "check-writing" shelves to separate it from mine (one lady did apologize after I did this). I guess I could just start bagging their food with mine, maybe that would teach them not to do this.

I also like to have all the refrigerated items together and so on - like items like pet food, cleaning items I also like to keep together, but I am crazy and OCD and I know it.

Are we related?

I thought that too when I read the post about bagging things according to their 'style.' :rotfl: I just thought it was due to the fact that my first job as a teenager was in a grocery store as a cashier. Our bag boys were awful, so I usually scanned and bagged everything and I guess it's just habit now. I'm trying to 'train' my fiance to care as much as I do, but he just doesn't get it :rotfl:

I could give a hoot who puts up the bar.

What does drive me nuts is the people who drag shopping carts around the store with one hand by the opposite end of the cart. Theyend up taking up both sides of the aisle. Most of them are not paying attention to their carts too well --- I may just have to slip them a few extra products as punishment - I am thinking ex-lax, strawberry douche, and gerbil food. :cool1: :rotfl:

I always thought it was your job to put the bar up to separate your groceries from the person in front of you. I don't think I've ever seen anyone place it after their groceries. I think it's easier to reach from the behind position too. Wouldn't the person in front actually have to reach across your groceries to get to the bar? That's assuming of course that there are no crackers stuck on the conveyor belt. Maybe I just wait longer to start un-piling my groceries on the belt?

I think it's easier just to send hubby though! :rotfl2:

You'd better hope there are no DISers in line in front of you when you're asking it like that! You might not appreciate their responses. :rotfl:

I was wondering if it was a CT thing, because everyone always does that, I even do it if there is no one behind me yet....

The one thing I hate is when I go to bag the groceries and then it is time to pay and I go over to the credit card machine and the next person in line has either moved their cart up so far that I can't reach it or they are standing there waiting their turn.
Of course I just say excuse me and they move, but It still irks me LOL

::yes:: I totally agree.

One guy wouldn't move once...I was like "did you want to enter my PIN in for me?"

We all have our own "methods" when shopping I guess...the way we load the belt/whether we'll "stoop" to bagging our own groceries or not/whether we'll return the cart or not/the "bar" debate...

I just find it all rather funny.
