The American and Czechia (Czech Republic) culture Q and A thread. Time for another culture thread to be added. The Czech Republic is a close NATO ally and economic partner of the USA and we have had great relations with them for nearly a century. So I thought it would be interesting to discuss our cultural differences and similarities about our two countries. Let us have a fun and educational thread. Remember to keep questions and answers within the the Disboards guidelines. Enjoy the thread everyone. 😊 🇺🇸 🤝 🇨🇿

First question for Czech Disboarders. What are typical recipes you make in the Czech Republic?

Wow, this hits close to home. Genetically I am 31% Czech but that is my only link. My maternal Grandparents were Czech. My Grandfather immigrated to Canada as a young adult. My Grandmother was born in North Dakota in Pisek. My maternal Great-Grandparents were among a group of Czech immigrants who established Pisek. As was common in that era, my Grandparents marriage was "arraigned". Canada was looking to settle the west, so for $10 immigrants could get 160 acres of land if they agreed to farm it. My Grandfather got a land grant.
Also common 120 years ago, immigrants left their culture behind. The priority was assimilating into your new culture. My mom was the second youngest of 6 children. The youngest is the only child who learned any Czech, and then it was only a few words and only because she was the only child not to go away to a boarding High School so she spent time one on one with her parents. And she was the only one to ever cook any Czech food, but only because as an adult she decided she wanted to learn some Czech recipes, her mother did not prepare traditional food.
So long explanation to explain why there have never been any Czech traditions in my family. In the era my family came here, they left behind their culture.

Ahoj Mr. Buzz. Your czech is pretty good. do many people in these forum speak czech? i didn't think commonly spoke in USA. Czechia schooling has 2 stages, the first years with the basic subjects and the second years with more subjects, harder like. There are a type of specialty school as well as University. University in Czechia are free if public and degree taught in czech. Otherwise you have to pay. that is the basic of it. Just please don't make mistake of many americans and call us eastern europe. we are central europe.

I used Google translate. I figured it might be better to ask you questions in your native language if English isn’t your first.

Some stores that are common as 24 hours stores are usually like gas stations or Walmart. Regular stores like grocery stores or shopping mall stores are only open during regular business hours or close in the evening. 24 hour stores have 2 or 3 different shifts of workers.

Short answer: capitalism

I read a book last year called The Prague Sonata. While fiction, I learned some historical things about its WW II history. My knowledge of eastern Europe is very limited!

Some Fast Food places are 24 hours too. Your Walmarts are still 24 hours? Ours ended that during the pandemic and Walmart said they weren't going back.

Mine isn't but I was too tired to google. I should have just stayed with gas stations.🤣

Prague is known as mysterious place. We have lots of historical areas. I eat at a place called Medieval Tavern [near the castle]. It has been around since 1300 and mozart liked it. Many tourists go there but I do too.
