The Alaskan Jewel! Welcome Aboard….You don’t Exist!

I love the sail away photos. I am glad that you were able to relax a little.

Corinna

Love all the sights and sounds of departure day. Great shots of the navy ships!

What a first day. I hope you were able to shake it off an enjoy yourself.

It was a crazy day, but we were really going to make the best of it.. Nothing else you could do really.

Looks like sail away is off to a great start! I love sail away, and leaving from Seattle is so Scenic. I would like to take an Alaskan cruise that leaves from Vancouver next time

Seattle is really scenic. I had no clue it would be so beautiful to sail from. I would like to check out Vancouver though too.

Love the Sail away pics!

I don't know if you ever got out to the pool at night but those weird Palm "trees" opened up and became lights.

I did see them lit up but didn't realize they opened.

Hi Jen. Can't wait to read your latest trip report. Not the welcome I would have wanted but kudos to you for handling it so well. I can't believe someone from NCL concierge didn't take control and fix everything for you as soon as they realized the mistake. Hope things improve. can't wait to see your Alaska pictures and hear about your suite life. Love all your trip reports

Thanks for joining in!
We made the best of it and we still had a great time. I got a lot of pictures too!

Loving the report! Hope they made up the mess to you. You were handling that much better than I would! Can't wait to hear more. I would love to try another ship, but my "kid" (he's 15) does want to do anything other than Disney.

Not till I got home and emailed them. They really should have on the ship and it still surprises me how bad they handled it all.
Claire was mad about not going on DCL but she had a blast and would go back on NCL in a heartbeat.

I would have had a panic attack if I had to deal with all of that my first day.

Yep. I was really holding that attack back too!

We are sailing NCL in April and I now have made a note to myself to print every single piece of paper out. I mean, since you "didn't exist", couldn't they have given away your room? I mean, if someone wanted to upgrade at the port, could that have happened? I would have killed someone.

I thought the same thing...wonder if they gave the room away. I would hope if they tried somewhere in the system it just wouldn't let them.

DCL would have handled it differently. Case in point, on our last Fantasy cruise, we were getting phone calls, some late at night, from an unknown stateroom from a caller who spoke Spanish. We kept trying to explain they had the wrong number, but the person didn't get it. After the third unwanted call, we went to guest services just to ask them if there was a way to block a stateroom from calling you. They said there wasn't, but they would see what they could do to take care of it. Not only did we not get anymore calls, but they left care packages in the stateroom as a "sorry for the inconvenience". Each kid got their own bag filled with stuff. Allison an adorable stuffed Piglet dressed like a pirate along with pirate coins, stickers, etc. and Michael a pirate hat, a sword, more chocolate, a bandana, basically a full on pirate costume in a bag. Not only was it awesome, it was totally unexpected! And they called to follow up to make sure everything was o.k.! Now, THAT'S service.

that is what NCL should have done as well. The fact that they never sent any type of apology letter was just awful.

The only reason NCL is getting my money this time instead of DCL is strictly because of the budget. It was hard to pass up a week long Caribbean cruise for five people for $1,900.00 with a free beverage package to boot.

Yes, the price was right for us too and the promo packages really are nice.

And the Chiululy museum...yep, never taking my whirling dervish son there. Mike and I also vowed never to take the kids to the Grand Canyon. Same reason.

That's my son too. As a kid he was a tornado. Bouncing off everything. His girlfriend has a little boy who is no where near as wild as Michael was but he still stresses at times....I keep saying...don't you want to tell me you are sorry.:lmao:

I love the sail away photos. I am glad that you were able to relax a little.

Corinna

thanks....once we actually got going I was able to relax a bit.

The Sail Away party has started and this was a Nickelodeon cruise…..so we got Nick characters!

board66 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board67 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Skip and Claire were hoping for Squidward, but he wasn’t there. Sorry guys!

board44 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board45 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board69 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Claire used to be a big Dora fan…of course now she is too cool for Dora.

board68 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board76 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board70 by Jenseib, on Flickr

They weren’t out too long and then back they went….but I did catch a quick shot of Backpack!

board71 by Jenseib, on Flickr

It was a nice little sail away party, but no one does it like Disney.

Skip was eyeing the food.

board77 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board78 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board79 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We went and got some drinks…Not sure what I had but it looks like something Mango again.

board72 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And we just relaxed and watched us sail away for a bit.

board73 by Jenseib, on Flickr

There were barges all over the place…not something we ever see normally.

board74 by Jenseib, on Flickr

The pilot boat was out and I explained how it worked to Skip….and he doesn’t believe me. LOL.

board75 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Holland America on its way!

board80 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And of course one of the reasons to sail to Alaska is to see the beautiful scenery.

board81 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Claire and I headed back to the room to get her changed out of her swim suit. I went out and watched the world go by while she changed.

board82 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board83 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I also called Florentina and told her we did not get our excursion tickets. She had the info on those and said she would get them taken care of. I also told her how our dining reservations were not in the system but I got them back….all except one but it was just a 15 minute difference so I was fine with that. She told me I was not supposed to do that and she has them all in the system….she can see them….And yep they were all the ones I just made. I knew because one was 15 minutes off. I just let it slide. I was happy to get them and I would be checking tomorrow on excursions if the tickets didn’t show up tonight.

After she was dressed we decided to go find the kids club and get her signed up.

board84 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We cut through the buffet again.

board85 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board86 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board87 by Jenseib, on Flickr

The cake looks to pretty to eat.

board88 by Jenseib, on Flickr

The club is right outside the buffet entrance.

splash1 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Claire is 10 and she was considered a Dolphin. Most of her activities were actually not in this room but in a conference type room at the front of the ship near the casino.

I wasn’t sure how she would like it here. Disney’s kids clubs are amazing and much bigger. They have all sorts of props and activities. They have little computers, games, toys, and costumes, dance floors…you name it, they got it….NCL….has a room.

splash2 by Jenseib, on Flickr

splash3 by Jenseib, on Flickr

The Counselors have fake names on NCL. The one that checked us in was Tweety. She was very nice …..and she recognized my DCL bag and lanyard and asked which ship/s we have sailed. We told her and she used to work in the kids club on the Wonder. She said right off the bat that I am going to notice A LOT of differences between the 2 lines. Oh you don’t have to tell me that….I already have! LOL!!! She did say they try to make it a lot of fun. Claire was happy she used to be on DCL and was excited to give the club a try later on. I told her if she didn’t like it she didn’t have to go back again.

splash4 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We went back on the pool deck and ran into Skip who had a drink that looked really good. I asked what it was and he said Mango Meltdown. I read about that one before and it did look good, so Claire and I went and got some drinks too.

board89 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board90 by Jenseib, on Flickr

This became my new favorite drink. VERY tasty. For those who have sailed on DCL before it is similar to a Princess Delight only this one has some alcohol in it. That being said, I never felt the drinks were heavy on the alcohol. For me, I like that, but Skip said they needed more liquor.

Claire and I found a spot to sip our drinks and look at the ocean….through a dirty window.

board91 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Claire insisted I feel how warm the pool was.

board92 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And it was VERY warm.

Up next…A little Exploring

This report is turning out to be a form of torture for me already, I'm loving the scenery pictures and I am dying to get back to Alaska

Funny how the crew member told you how you would be seeing differences between the lines, I never thought about how lines can be different for the crew too

OK, this still isn't off to the best start. I'd be at the point where i would be demanding that they take me to the front of each line to get my ressies back! No matter how much OBC they gave you, it would need to be enough to make the entire trip just about free!

I'm not a Disney snob, but this would be enough to keep me on DCL forever. I'm also realizing how great the Disney service and decor are compared to NCL.

Man, I can't believe how they dropped the ball at every step of the way. If that's how they treat their Concierge guests, I'm not sure I'd like to know how they treat everyone else! Not that it would matter though.... she was starstruck when I showed her the SpongeBob pictures! LOL. And to top things off...... she's jealous you got to see Dora! :rotfl: I guess she's old enough to see Dora as being retro cool now. ;)

Well one thing is for sure, looks like they FEED FEED FEED on an NCL cruise! LOL But honestly, so disappointing still that some things weren't completely sorted out...grrrr.....that kids club looks......um......boring? Nice that one of the employees used to be on The Wonder though!

Great pics, as always :goodvibes

Your room looks nice, albeit a little dated

I do really like the way you can change the sign in the door for privacy/housekeeping etc :thumbsup2

Crappy that everywhere you go, they can't find you! And then your butler to tell you not to go get back your dining  BAH! :furious:

Funny how Skip never believes you :rolleyes2 :rotfl2:

"NCL has....a room." :lmao: Just a little different from DCL's kids clubs

That is kind of neat that they had the characters. The food looked amazing. How nice that the the person checking Claire in at the kids' club used to work on the Wonder.

Now I want to sail out of Seattle. The scenery is simply stunning.

Corinna

I have a forum friend from Passporters on a DCL Alaskan cruise right now and I see her pictures on facebook and I am so jealous! Even though I was just there...I want to go back again and see more.
I have heard those who have been trained by DCL often have no issues getting a job on another line as they are basically over trained and can pick it right up.

It would have been nice to get a free cruise....but I just want to be sure this doesn't happen to others and I let them know that too.

So funny. Katie is passed worrying about if it is babyish or not. Claire still as at the stage where it matters i guess. She loves Sponge Bob though....I can live without him easily...especially since she watches it over and over and he can be quite annoying.

Well one thing is for sure, looks like they FEED FEED FEED on an NCL cruise! LOL But honestly, so disappointing still that some things weren't completely sorted out...grrrr.....that kids club looks......um......boring? Nice that one of the employees used to be on The Wonder though!

We never went hungry and I am pretty sure that first day I gained at least 5 lbs. LOL.
I never thought Claire would go more than once to the club but she went more than she ever has on DCL. She had very fun counselors and they played a lot of games and she got to know some of the kids.

Great pics, as always :goodvibes

Thanks....I tought my camera everything she knows!

Your room looks nice, albeit a little dated

Very dated, but I can trade that for space. I was really happy that Skip was impressed with the room size and all the perks we did have and he actually enjoyed them too....not many grumbles at all.

I do really like the way you can change the sign in the door for privacy/housekeeping etc :thumbsup2

I thought that was pretty cool too, but I forgot to change it constantly.

Crappy that everywhere you go, they can't find you! And then your butler to tell you not to go get back your dining  BAH! :furious:

Yeah it was starting to get annoying.. Good thing I am a chipper person.

Funny how Skip never believes you :rolleyes2 :rotfl2:

NEVER!!! I tell him stuff and he never thinks it right. A complete stranger tells him and he believes it 100%.

"NCL has....a room." :lmao: Just a little different from DCL's kids clubs

It was quite disappointing walking in there and seeing basically nothing. Totally different than DCL.

That is kind of neat that they had the characters. The food looked amazing. How nice that the the person checking Claire in at the kids' club used to work on the Wonder.

Now I want to sail out of Seattle. The scenery is simply stunning.

Corinna

Seattle was beautiful to sail out of. It was a long time before we were out in more open waters.
Sadly Nick and NCL have ended their relationship so the ships that do have them will not starting in Jan.

We decided to walk around and just look at things. Typically when I board a ship I go around and explore it and take pictures and have a good idea of the layout before the Muster Drill. This obviously did not happen today with all our issues so we just wandered a bit.
I believe this was the card room.

board93 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And the Library.

board94 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board95 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And the Spa.

board96 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I typically go in and look around the spa on the first day as well, but this is all the further I got the whole trip.

board97 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We headed downstairs. I am not sure if we had something in mind or if we were just walking.

board98 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We came upon the Atrium and also O’Sheehans.

board99 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board100 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I think this is the best picture I ever got of the name on the mirror…One of those things I meant to come back and do better at a later time.

board101 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I asked Claire if she wanted to stop and get a snack to eat. Sure, why not.

board111 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We were seated in a corner with a nice view.

board102 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We took a look at the menu and decided to share a few appetizers.

board103 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Claire loves Mozzarella Sticks so I think I was lucky to get one…though it was a small order to begin with.

board104 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Claire doesn’t like Artichoke dip, but she did eat some of the chips.

board105 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And we both like chicken wings.

board106 by Jenseib, on Flickr

For dessert…yes we had dessert too…heeheehee….we both got Brownie Cheesecake…no sharing this time around.

board107 by Jenseib, on Flickr

It was all very good. And we weren’t that hungry to begin with and now we were bloated and rolling around as we were so full. I wish we had eaten here more often, but I think we only made it back one more time. Just not enough time to eat at all the places I wanted to.

We rolled out.

board108 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And decided to check out the Atrium a little better.

board109 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board110 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board112 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Here is Carlos Bake Shop….just a small corner of the Java Café.

board113 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We never tried any as they are an extra cost and not included in the dining package either. We really had no need to try them as there were plenty of options for us to eat all day long. In case you didn’t know, the Bake shop is by the Cake Boss star Buddy Valastro.

board114 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board115 by Jenseib, on Flickr

This Atrium is only 2 stories tall, where many ships are usually at least 3 levels. It did feel a bit smaller but still was a nice place. I know a lot of people seemed to gather here to watch presentations and just relax. We never really did much. I liked the Atrium on the Caribbean Princess much better for activities.

board116 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Guest Services.

board117 by Jenseib, on Flickr

This area often had info there if needed and where luggage tags were later in the cruise for disembarking.

board118 by Jenseib, on Flickr

This is the art Gallery and the internet café is also in here ….I believe I took a picture of that later in the cruise.

board119 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Well looky who we have here!!!!

board120 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We walked out on deck 7 and just watched the world go by for a bit.

board121 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board122 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board123 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We decided to head back to the room so I could do some unpacking…By the Way, the luggage came extremely fast…all there before we even sailed away.

Evidently we were walking through the hall at warp speed.

board124 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Actually I think it was the setting on my camera as several of the pictures I took later are all whacked out like that.
We got back to the room and at some point Skip showed up as well. We now had excursion tickets too! BUT…..only for 2 of the 3 I had made. The Deadliest Catch one wasn’t there. UGH! Of all the excursions made, that is the one I know Skip wanted the most. Honestly, Deadliest Catch the show was one of the main reasons Skip wanted to sail to Alaska. I gave Florentina a call and let her know. She said she would check into it and our tickets should arrive tonight, if not early tomorrow.

Skip lay around and watched TV. Claire fiddled around herself and I put away clothes and told each to make note where I was putting their things. Claire remembered…Skip would ask me daily where his socks, underwear, shirts, etc. were. Yet he can remember some off comment I made 10 years ago. LOL.

Up next...This time it's my fault!

Love your walk around - even I could get a bit of the feel of the ship. ;)

And you did what you HAVE to do on a cruise - eat and eat and then eat a little more. What a good girl Claire is, helping you. ::yes::

OMG I just fell over laughing - Tom is the same way. I tell him where I put his things and a little later he complains as he cannot find anything but MY things. Men!!

Oh I hope your Deadliest Catch tix showed up!!! And that's not what you meant by 'it was my fault'....no no no we'll blame every mistake in NCL ;-)

Glad Clare actually made good use of the kids clubs, that's great to hear!

Ahhhhh.....I could stare at your sailing and scenery pics for hours.....breathtaking!

It is nice to see some photos from around the ship. I have sailed on one of the sister ships and many things are completely different and others are the same or very similar. Your appetizers look yummy. I am glad that most of your excursion tickets have turned up. I hope that they managed to straighten the last one out as well.

Definitely not the start you would have hoped! You were a lot more restrained than I would have been - what a total mess up on their part.

Looking forward to reading more :)

I had been dieting for months and I was not limiting myself on the ship! Of course I felt completely bloated for the first 2 days. LOL.

Skip never listens and tries to say I never told him....No dear...it's your selective hearing.

Actually I could blame the next thing on Skip.....but it was my fault ...sort of too. LOL.

Were you on the Jade? my friend Jeanne...I know you know her too...was on her this summer and it is similar. She loved the cruise.

Definitely not the start you would have hoped! You were a lot more restrained than I would have been - what a total mess up on their part.

It was hard, but I just had to have faith that things would get worked out.

I continued to unpack and put things away. At one point I asked what time it was as I wanted to go to the first show of the evening. No one answered me, so I pulled out my phone, which was now on airplane mode and looked at the time. It was just after 6 so I got myself ready and changed and Claire changed as well.

Once we were all ready we headed towards the Stardust Theatre.

We passed through Chin Chin (we never did eat here but it looked very popular.)

board125 by Jenseib, on Flickr

As we were working our way to the theatre a ton of people were walking against us. I couldn’t figure it out. Why are so many people come FROM the theatre direction when the show is going to start in the next 5-10 minutes.

And then we arrived to a fairly empty theatre.

board126 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I asked the guy what was going on? I thought the show started at 7:15. It did…it is now 8:15. Hunh? My phone says 7:15. OMG!!!! My stupid phone reset itself. It did this when I was on the Caribbean Princess too. For some reason when it is in airplane mode for a couple of hours it just resets itself to some other time. No idea why. I have also heard a few others with iphones have had this trouble as well.

Well we missed the first show.

board127 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Skip said he wondered why I was saying it started at 7:15 when the bedside clock said it was after 8. Um..thanks for telling me that…and thanks for answering me when I asked what time it was. (he had been blocking the clock at that time, so I never even saw it).

What to do now? We popped outside for a few minutes.

board128 by Jenseib, on Flickr

HOLY COW! It’s cold!!!!! Extremely windy and cold. What happened to the nice warm weather we had. Ok, I am now debating this whole Alaskan thing. I knew it would be chilly and we would need coats, but the wind was insane.

board129 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I was hoping it was just because of the movement of the ship and all would be fine later.

We decided it was time for dinner and with no reservations for tonight we were going to try one of the main dining rooms. Azura was the closest to where we were at so we headed that way.

We cut through the Casino to get there.

board130 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board131 by Jenseib, on Flickr

This is Magnum’s Champagne and Wine bar area…..and also where you enter Le Bistro.

board132 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board133 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And Shakers Martini and Cocktail bar…which is basically connected…not sure why they have 2 different names.

This is the Maltings Beer and Whisky Bar….just a few steps away from the other 2.

board134 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board135 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We arrived at Azura and were seated right away.

We took a look at the menu. Honestly, we weren’t really that hungry.

food12 by Jenseib, on Flickr

food13 by Jenseib, on Flickr

food14 by Jenseib, on Flickr

food15 by Jenseib, on Flickr

But of course we still ordered a 3 course meal! Hahaha

We started with rolls/bread…..I think NCL has great bread. It’s one thing I remember from sailing her years ago too. Always good rolls.

food16 by Jenseib, on Flickr

The view from our table.

food17 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We only had 1 server. I am not sure if this is typical for NCL or just our area, but on other cruise lines we always have a server and assistant server…who handles the drinks (again never asked if we wanted anything to drink) and helps clear the table, etc.

When I think about it, even at the specialty restaurants we only had 1 server as well, but that could be different.

Claire got the Clam Chowder.

food18 by Jenseib, on Flickr

And I got the Wild Lump Crab Cakes.

food19 by Jenseib, on Flickr

If Skip got something I didn’t take a picture of it. Most likely he got the clam chowder as well.

We had a window seat, but my back was to it.

food20 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I did not take a picture of our main courses for some reason. I think I was just tired at that point and it totally slipped my mind. Claire and I got the Special, which was Roasted Striploin, baked potato, corn on the cob, broccoli, creamed horseradish and beef jus.

I expected it to be more like prime rib…it was most like roast beef with thin strips cut. The meat itself was good but the beef jus was more like a gravy and we didn’t care so much for that. If I were to order it again we would order with no sauce. I don’t remember what Skip got, but I am thinking pork chop. Whatever he got, he did like it and he ended up sharing with Claire and eating some of her beef.

We asked our server for a glass of milk for each of us at one point and I am pretty sure he went to milk a cow as it took forever for it to come. He was very nice but service was very slow. We did have to remind him about the milk.

For dessert I got the Warm Volcano Cake….mmmmm! That was good….though honestly I could leave the berries off next time.

food21 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I think Skip and Claire both just got ice-cream and no picture was taken.

After we were done we headed out towards the gift shop. Skip needed to buy cigarettes and we wanted to browse around.

board136 by Jenseib, on Flickr

board137 by Jenseib, on Flickr

This was the worst gift shop on a ship I have ever been in. Very little selection and most of what was offered was jewelry, alcohol and cigarettes.

board138 by Jenseib, on Flickr

They had some clothing, most was pretty expensive. Nothing with the ships name on it. I would have liked to have gotten a tee with the Jewel on it but none were ever out the whole week. I did end up getting a ship magnet, but they didn’t even have many of those. I was hoping to get a Christmas ornament…none to be found. Basically next to nothing for kids. Well at least that kept me from telling Claire no to useless stuff.

After our quick browse around the shop we went outside and saw a beautiful sunset in the distance. I only had my point and shoot with me and I took a crappy picture of it.

board139 by Jenseib, on Flickr

It was still super cold and windy out too.

We were getting pretty tired now…remember we are 3 hours difference from home….so we headed back to the room to get ready for bed.

This guy was waiting for us.

board140 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Claire was excited to see her bed folded out.

board141 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We watched TV for a bit, but I was out pretty fast. Skip told me he and Claire did find the show on one of the TV channels and it was not very good so we didn’t miss much. Claire agreed that it wasn’t too entertaining…so I know Skip wasn’t just trying to humor me.

Up next……Will Day 2 be smoother than Day 1?

What an huge boat! It seems like everywhere you went there was a restaurant!!! Loved the pictures. I have to say that chandelier kinda would have freaked me out. I would be in danger of running people over watching to make sure nothing fell!!

What interesting choices for dinner. That is a big menu! Of course, I have only sailed DCL so what do I know. Just out of curiosity, how many restaurants were there? How on earth did you pick?

We are ready for a great second day! The scenery to Alaska is so amazing. Who knew that watching the shore would be so fun! I have never spent a much time on a balcony as I did in Alaska. Also, how did Claire find her bed? My son is ready for more comfort on the boats. He is almost too tall for the couch anymore.

Bring on the glaciers and the animals!

Were you on the Jade?

Yes, we did a back to back cruise on the Jade in 2009. The bar set up was just as strange there.

What a shame that you missed the show, but at least it looks like you did not miss much. The gift shops on Norwegian seem to be a bit strange. It was the same on the Jade. The good thing is that I spent hardly any money.

The dinner menu looked lovely.
