The 50,000 RR points on SWA is back :-)!!

We've been considering this for DH for a few months now. We've been using SWA at least once a year for the last 3 years so it seems like a great use of the points.

I noticed the $69 vs $99 annual fee also has different rewards on the "anniversary". The $69 fee awards 3,000 points every year on the anniversary or around $50 in Wanna Get Away Fares. The $99 fee is twice that at 6,000 points on the anniversary or around $100 in Wanna Get Away Fares. At first I thought it was tied in to one being a Business Card vs Personal but they do seem to vary depending on what site you pull up.

I also see you get points for doing balance transfers. Has anyone done this? The part I'm curious about is transferring from another Chase card. My DH has a small balance on another type of Chase card (Slate?) and I thought I remembered you couldn't transfer from the same bank to bank? I might be making this up though - just curious. I can call them to ask but I'd love to hear first hand from someone that might have done this since there appears to be several on the DIS who've applied for this card.

Thanks,
Heather

OK- DH and I both just applied and got approved. Well it said the application was approved and that we would receive the cards in a few weeks. YAY!!!

Do you lose the points if you cancel the card or do they go into your RR bank at southwest and stay there??

If I apply now and pay the yearly fee but won't be using the RR for over a year, can I cancel the card and retain the RR points or do I have to pay a second yearly fee to retain the points over a year?

I had a Southwest Chase Visa and closed it about 6 months ago. I called Chase and asked about re-applying in order to get the new 50,000 miles. The representative said once you have received rewards from a Southwest Chase Visa you would not be eligible to receive anymore reward points ever.

I figured there was maybe a 2-3 year wait in order to re-apply and qualify for the new points so I am asking if anyone has had a Southwest rewards card and closed it and then re-applied and received rewards points again? How long in between the 2 cards?

I opened a southwest card in August of 2010 and closed the card July 2011 so I didn't have to pay the annual fee. The reward last summer was one standard award after your first purchase. I applied for the 50000 points award this past August (2011) and was approved and I have the points in my rapids reward account. That was only one month from one credit card to the other. Not sure if I got the points because one reward was with the old program versus the new program???

Throughout the years I've had and closed numerous Chase cards and have always received the promotions. My only concern would be the effect on your credit score if you open and close too many accounts.

I don't believe there is a period where you can get the points again. Seems like a 1 time deal only. You also notice that it says on the page for new chase member's who never had a southwest rewards card.

That sounds exactly like what I am talking about. I was trying to figure out if I would get the rewards points because of the new program. How long did it take for you to show you had received the 50,000 points with the new program?

as soon as i got the card I bought something with the card. when i received my first bill it had the 50000 points listed. after i paid that bill the points were in my account. I applied for the card at the end of august and had the points in my account, ready to use, by the beginning of October. quite the deal.....i'm hoping for some nice low fares for this summer and getting more than 2 flights out of the points! :)

Do you think if I signed up today I would have the points in my account in time to buy late Dec. flights? Like the 23rd of Dec. Wondering if that would be pushing it.:confused3 Thanks!

Can someone that has the card answer a question? It says points redeemable on over 50 carriers on their website....do you think 50,000 points could realistically get someone to Hawaii on a Southwest partner?

I signed up for the card and should have it in a couple of weeks. I will make my first charge and hope the 50,000 miles shows up. Thanks for the information that you provided.

I really hate to apply for a new credit card but with my insanely high credit score this was a no brainer. I just really want the free tickets and flying out here to MCO is always expensive.

I plan to get the points and then cancel the card. I am also going to apply for the Delta card with the no fee for the first year and get a free ticket that way too.

If I could get DH to do the same we could have several trips on free tickets. Unfortunately, we have to drive 4 hours to the closest major airport with SWA but it is worth the gas and time...free travel.

I know I kind of didn't want to apply either- we have a high credit score too, but we also plan on canceling after we use our points. It is just too good of a deal- we plan on flying to WDW for a few days and the doing the Disney cruise for Thanksgiving next year- the airfare is gonna be so high- I figured the points would help keep costs down. :thumbsup2 Plus the airport is 10 minutes away- and we are a Southwest hub. :goodvibes

10 minutes, that is great! I know about not wanting to apply as it does hit our prefect credit scores to open a card but free tickets....I just had to do it. I am glad you got the airfare for free and keeping the cost down. Have a wonderful cruise.

Just applied for the card. With the high prices on SW lately, it seems like a killer deal.

so... Once the points are in my Southwest account, they stay there even if I close the credit card?

I might have to do this. We are planning on a trip to Colorado next summer. Not sure what they prices will be then, but I just looked on the SW site and if we were to go in May, we'd have enough miles for 4 tickets! IF we wanted to go to San Francisco instead, we'd be 40 points short, but I am guessing that if I were to use this card for a few purchases, we could earn those miles. (It does go against the grain not to use my disney VISA, though; I've made QUITE a few dollars with that one, all used for trips to WDW!)

So glad that so many DISers have been able to take advantage of this great deal :thumbsup2!!

I saw this offer last week too...and jumped on it. I applied for the card for my DH since our other two Chase cards are in my name with him as a secondary. He was instantly approved...so can't wait to get the card and get those points. We are also hoping for a quick turnaround on the points to book airfare in March for a trip! :)
