The 2010 World Cup Thread / South Africa

I heard that they are so famous now that they would be sold in US too. :worship: God help us.

they have been in the us for over 5 years, and thats just from what I know personally. My kids have had them since we were Colorado Mammoth season ticket holders from season 1

I'm going to be in a minority here, buuuuut......I agree the call on us was HORRENDOUS....however, I will (painfully) agree with one of the commentators (may have been Lalas, can't remember) that the Referee did not score Two Goals on us......:headache:
True, but now we have to score "extra" goals to make up for bad officiating? Goals happen, for us and against us. And with decent officiating, we should have had 3 goals against their 2.

Nervewracking, but so exciting and satisfying game today. It would have been gut-wrenching had we lost or tied ANYWAY, but especially after another disallowed goal.

I just came back from playing hooky this morning and watching at a bar on the west side of NYC. I am emotionally spent. Glad England went through too. Don't get me wrong, I think Capello is an ***, but I've been a fan of the EPL and Spurs for years (Glad it was Defoe who scored). But, the US has to stop doing this to me. My heart can't take it anymore.

FIFA World Cup's slogan live up to its hype: "One Goal Changes Everything"

USA and Algeria were facing elimination in regulation tied at 0-0, and with 4 extra minutes injury time at 91st minute mark and GOOOOAL!!

USA and England each with 5 points in Group C...USA wins group since 1930 becasue of goals difference in Group C.

Looking forward to next match on Saturday (round of 16).

Go USA! ....sorry I'm also rooting for Holland (Netherlands) to get to the semi-final!

Well looks lke we play Ghana Saturday. GO USA

We will be in Orlando so will need to get to the ESPN Club very early I am sure to see this one!

Dont want to do the Wide World Sports buffet thing

Sorry to barge into your thread but I felt like hsaring wih someone. This is our first world cup in Germany--it is almost 10:30 at night and Germany won (and will advance into the 2nd phase) about 10 minutes ago. You should HEAR this party. This is much louder than when I was in New Hampshire adn the Red Sox finally took the world series. Fireworks, car horns, air horns and sirens everywhere:rotfl: After their first win it lasted almost 2 hours and this time it is starting louder--I may not get much sleep tonight, but I love everyoen being so happy:goodvibes:lmao:

Okay please carry on with real discussions of stats and scores and players;)

And keep a clean sheet for the first time since 1950.

Yay USA! Yay Landon! That's my cousin!

That is so cool. Landon has finally arrived. I've been following his career since he played for the Under-17s. After all the knocks he took earlier in his career, he has proven to be the player that we all expected him to be. His metamorphosis started with his spell at Bayern Munich. While seemingly unsuccessful, it taught him a lot about being a professional soccer player that showed when he returned to Europe on loan to Everton this past winter.

This is a World Cup thread girl, you don't have to be sorry! ;) There is nothing like a celebration in countries where football means everything to them. I was in Italy when the 2006 world cup was going on and the whole experience was AMAZING :goodvibes

First, a question for Firedancer or anyone else who knows. What is the best way to follow the euro league games during the normal season? This World Cup has reignited my love of the game and I would like to keep up with some players that I have noticed. Any suggestions?

I am glad USA got through, as well as England. But honestly, I am a bit surprised they both made it the way they have been playing. USA missed some amazing chances early in the match. The offside call was a close call and could have gone either way. Scoring in stoppage was luck.

Now the US has to face Ghana (England gets Germany). We'll have to see what happens.

Personally, I am cheering for Uruguay!

Fox Soccer Channel. DH is a big UEFA soccer fan- FSC plays English Premiere League, Seria (Italian), and UEFA matches. They sometimes show a few Bundesliga games (German), too.

We get FSC on our satellite TV provider (DishNetwork). It is also available on Time Warner cable. Check your local cable or satellite provider.

In addition to Fox Soccer Channel I also get GoalTV. FSC has much better coverage of matches but GoalTV covers the Spanish and German leagues and has some weekly magazine shows for the Bundesliga (Germany), Serie A (Italy), and La Liga (Spain). Setanta used to carry some additional EPL games along with Ligue 1 (France) and the Scottish Premier League but they were turned into Fox Soccer Plus and they charge too much as far as I'm concerned. All 3 are available on DirecTV. The first two are part of the standard sports package while FSP requires an additional $14 on top of the $12 sports package.

If your ISP is part of the network with ESPN3 they show a lot of matches. Finally there is P2P television. It is a bit more gray market and many of the matches are feeds from Romania or Tunisia but they carry a lot of the big European matches as long as you don't care about sound.

Lastly, I highly recommend the Guardian Football Weekly podcast. During the season they do a show on Mondays and Thursdays and during big tournaments like the World Cup and Euros they do a daily show. If you like puns and British humor you will laugh a lot at the shows. This is the link to their RSS feed.

The US-Algeria match nearly killed me. Dempsey's goal was onside, out defense has to stop showing up at the 20 minute mark (thank God for the post), and we have to start putting away chances. When that goal went in a nearly put my fist through the ceiling. I had waited for years for Landon to step up when it mattered and while his Bayern spell was not the failure it was made out to be by many his spell with Everton was great. He really needs to make a permanent move to a bigger club while he can. Nothing against the MLS but your best (arguably of course) player should not be there.

I was really hoping for either Australia or Germany to score another goal because anyone with any sense would rather play Australia then Ghana but we owe them one from 2006. They will be tough but without Essien they are a completely different team. I don't see England beating Germany in a match that matters and part of me, though I do like England, wanted them to get knocked out just for the press coverage of the fallout. Of course this gives me at least one more game for my pre-tournament prediction of a John Terry red card to come true.

He sure has! I was a little worried that his potential was all hope and hype, but he's proving himself to be a great player. My DH says it was luck, but I don't agree. I can't wait for the next USA game. I wish I could be there waving my American flag and blowing a vuvuzela (sp)!

Was it luck? Maybe, who knows :confused3 I don't believed in 'just luck'. He was right behind waiting for the play the whole time, he never gave up, so it wasn't just luck. They worked so hard for 90 minutes + minutes :cheer2: :cheer2: and never gave up. :yay:

What I meant by luck is that they missed opportunity after opportunity during the first and second halves. Opportunities that one just doesn't get at this level of play very often. Yet they kept missing them.

The goal itself was well played, but they were still lucky because they it happened in stoppage. The normal 90 mins were over. One can't count on extra time.

Then again, none of those missed goals were anywhere near as bad as the missed Mexico goal on Tuesday against Uruguay. Dude was like a yard from the goal, had a totally open net (keeper had moved to challenge the incoming player), and yet shot wide. I sat there stunned (even though I am a Uruguay fan). Even the player who missed had a look on his face of "how could I have ever missed that."

Thanks FireDancer and MomofKatie. Sadly, I don't have Fox Soccer unless I want to upgrade my cable package AND add on an additional sports package. My ISP also doesn't allow for ESPN3.com. I will keep that podcast in mind though.

Didn't Sentanta merge with someone (FSC perhaps?). ESPN was also showing an EPL match on Saturday mornings. There is also MLS, while not yet on the level of Serie A, the EPL or La Ligua, there are some very skilled players and some entertaining games.

Nearly killed you? If the US play any more of these last minute miracles, I'm sending my hospital bill to the US Federation.

We're pretty even with Ghana. Both teams play an attacking style, and you're right, we owe them for 2006. I see Bradley pretty much staying with the same lineup as the Algeria game, with Bocanegra moving to the middle and Bornstein on the left. He might bring Findley back in to pair up with Jozy, but god, I hope he's learned his lesson on that one. I'd still like to see Buddle paired with Jozy. I think Gomez makes a better and more effective sub.
