The 2010 Baltic Thread--Cruise Tips and Planning

My DH has told me stories about the things that get posted on other forums. You should see how nasty a Star Wars forum can get:scared1:

My future son in law was just telling me how ugly it can get on the "monster truck" forums.

'
There was a list.
Yes, it was asked for Andrew to give an opinion on the list.
But...the list is posted on a PUBLIC forum.
Andrew gave his opinion.
Someone else gave theirs.

That's not opining on someone else's opinion, that's SIMPLY GIVING ANOTHER OPINION.

Please......the first opinion-giver needs to quit getting his knickers in a knot.

AND....this is a DISCUSSION FORUM. I think we all know the definition of DISCUSSION. Boiled down, it means that one person can say something, and others can discuss it.

"Those individuals who live in the area or have visited it frequently are not going to have the same interests as those who are seeing it for the first time, as evidenced in Andrew's choices. "

This is NOT giving an opinon on the list. That is giving an opinion about the opinion giver. Much l better to simply say, "As an American I would like to visit the BF place...." than to tell why the other person's opinion is invalid or not as good.

"needs to quit getting his knickers in a knot"

Opinions like this are never welcome IMO and are out of line.

My DH has told me how nasty posters can be on some of the Mac forums he visits especially when it comes to rumor and speculation.

And probably much better if Andrew had just let it slide.

I live in a tourist town. People come here to visit all the time. I can never think of where to take them, because to me, I've seen it a million times.
And everyone who comes here is going to like something different.
So it was nice for Andrew to give his opinion, but it was also okay for someone else to point out that even if I live here, or he lives there, we may not always think the same things are interesting.
Sometimes I need to be reminded of what people who don't live here might like to do.

And your opinion is okay too.

Dh was just saying that in 1999, the Star Wars forum he was on got really bad after the Phantom Menace came out. There were two factions. The bashers versus the gushers. :lmao:

Anyway, hopefully we can get back on track and get back to planning this awsome vacation:woohoo:

All I'm saying is it is a slippery slope when we start trying to explain someone else's opinion. Seems to me it is much better to offer your own opinion and then, if you feel you need to, tell what unique perspective you have. You can do this w/o trying to tell why someone else's opinion is less valid.

Blowing out someone else's candle does not make yours shine any brighter. Just offer your opinion and your perspective.

LOL Maybe we've been planning this thing too long. Personally, we booked 20 months out. We are down to less than 6 weeks till we fly out.

It's gonna be a great cruise and soon we'll be reading each other's trip reports....and saying "I told you so!" :-)

It seems to me that after today everyone needs to take a step back and take a deep breath. People are asking for opinions/suggestions which others are giving, not everyone is going to agree.

Also, making snide comments or rude remarks is totally out of line and against DISboard guidelines. We have to remember we are all adults posting on this thread and we should all act that way.

I have to say that I love all the suggestions and ideas here. I feel its a great place to learn and share information, and its the first place I go to ask questions. I look forward to everyone's input, it actually makes the trip seem so much more exciting and real.

I personally am anAndrewDerek Fan, so Andrew, please continue to post.

I think one thing for everyone to keep in mind is that although all of us post in English, not everyone on these boards has the same nationality. Priorities, perspectives and even the way that sentences are phrased can be construed differently across different cultures, even English speaking ones. Even as a Canadian I notice the differences between us and Americans.

Sometimes offence is taken where none is meant, just by the way things are worded. I think all of us are excited and want the best trip possible. I know I am!

As for seeing shows in London, again it depends on what your priorities are. London is the world centre (along with New York) for theatre, and as someone who works in the theatre, most of my friends, students and colleagues go to London just to see shows! In my opinion it is something not to be missed! We are hoping to see 3 or 4 shows during our time there. And if you like Shakespeare, don't miss Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, an authentically built recreation of the original!

Ah London. So much to see, so little time. There is something for everyone.

We have tickets for OLIVER ! When my son was 11 he was one of Fagin's boys. We'll be taking my Grandson who is 15. Looking forward to it !!

I, too am a fan of Andrews and totally agree with everything you said !:thumbsup2

Shows on our list to see are: Oliver!, Les Miserables, Wicked, Lion King. DH and I have to take in consideration that we are taking our 3 boys along: 11,8,14, so they need to be family friendly. My oldest son is hoping to make a profession in the theatre, he loves musicals!

We're not going to book anything until we get there. Going to try our luck at the half-price booth and just see what is available. We are there 12 days so I'm hoping there'll be tickets for something. We don't even all have to sit together, just an adult with the 2 youngest.

Has anyone taken the tour at the Globe? What ages do you think would enjoy it? I know different kids have different interests in and tolerances for that kind of thing, but I'd just like a general idea of how kid-friendly it is. Also, I think Andrew recommended booking ahead of time, but I don't see an option for that for groups of fewer than 15. Is there a way to book ahead for a group of 10?

Thanks!

How funny ... when I was 11, I was a workhouse boy in Oliver ... and I'm a girl!!! (I did have a pixie cut after all) ... If you are old enough to know what a pixie cut is ... then you know that it was a long time ago that I was 11!!!:rotfl::rotfl2:

All four of those plays are excellent ... We just saw Rock of Ages in Toronto last weekend. First half was okay, second half was hilarious!!! Not a show for young ones though!!

Yes, I know what a pixie haircut is !!

We saw Wicked in London and I know it's extremely popular, but we weren't crazy about it. I think I just didn't care for the music. And I usually LOVE musicals.

Hey MJ!
How about I see your pixie cut and I raise you a "Peter Pan collar"?
Do you remember those too or am I now older? I can see the terrible school pic in my mind as we speak!

We've made the choice, for now!, not to see a play but my DS played
Mr. Sourberry in a production this past Sept.

Nice to see my name mentioned so many times in your post. This will be my only response to you, on this. I will not respond more.

1/ Mike asked my personal opinion, as a person who actually lives in London I responded to him, with my view that he asked me.

2/ Others have given their own constructive and positive response which is highly valued.

3/ Can you show me my 'don't bother' list? I do not think I posted one that you refer you. I highlighted my personal suggestions in bold.

4/ You agree with me on the aquarium, my comment is a zoo is a zoo is a zoo, London Zoo is very good, a walk in Regents park is good, but an example is I am going to Berlin as a stop on this Baltic cruise, the Zoo there is good, but it is not on my personal list as its a 'Zoo' and I have higher priorities. Distinctive to Berlin. The same is for London, the USA has fine zoos, so it isn't a priority.

5/ I would like to know how you actually know my background as it isn't published. It will be interesting if you can back this up with facts you know about me, I personally do not know anything substantial on any Disser to make a sweeping comment like that.

In summary I live in London, have seen a lot, in fact passionate about my capital city, and there was a famous saying, if you are tired of London you are tired of life. The issue is actually we take our city a bit for granted when we live here and that walk in Regents park is very nice.

I do feel you have completely missed the point of the question directed to me Mike asked me my personal views, I am not directing anyone in any way what they should do, there isn't any '''don't bother' list'' so you misrepresent me.

Lastly, I do can I say despair about a few posts on these boards, and hence why I post less and less and less, no sooner than you try to respond to an answer, the best you can, someone will make posts like this, not to 'add value' and make positive constructive suggestions but so come back personally. I myself took a decision a while back to call these boards a day, and not post after July, but the few places I post now is where people request information on London. Despite some few negative posts back on me I still come back to try to help people with my local knowledge.

Last night I answered 25 PM's on London, that would imply a number of people would like my opinion. (Tonight 7). Maybe this is why people PM.

Can we please all be constructive, the vast majority would like this. We have different opinions, but all are valid.

Please understand there was nothing negative meant in the post you quoted.....you may have read more into it than was there....you gave your opinion on what you would like to see, they gave theirs.....they in no way put you down. The reference about different backgrounds was just an example that you live in another country so yes, your background IS probably much different than someone from another country in terms of likes, dislikes, things of interest, etc. It was not a personal attack.

TO EVERYONE...please keep the posts on topic. This is not the place for pro and against posts...many seem to be very sensitive on certain topics.....please try not to take posts so personally...everyone is just giving their own opinions and feedback. Take it or leave it....

This thread is a wealth of info with many great contributions.....I would hate to see it have to be shut down because of petty bickering.

Thank you all for your future cooperation.

MJ
