"That Walt Disney Dude"

I am sure those girls were just being teens. I think knowing the history of the parks is fascinating and it does add to my enjoyment but if others feel differently..oh well. I feel there are so many ways to learn about the history of our country besides politics and wars. I want to learn about the people. I find the American Experience fascinating when the talk about Alexander Graham Bell, and Carnegie etc. "oh that Carnegie Hall" and now look at it!!!!

I don't think anyone has said knowing the history wouldn't add to the enjoyment. Posters have said it isn't necessary to know the history to enjoy the parks and not knowing it isn't some great mistake.

In YOUR opinion......I find it a Shame, because they don't know what they are missing and that,IN MY OPINION and in COMMON SENSE,that does effect their enjoyment of the parks.

For example..........If you enjoy the Castle, knowing how and why it there, the History....E.I..........the Cinderella and Snow White and Sleeping Beauty characters/story and movies, you will enjoy it more.

But to each there own..............you are like me and everyone else entitled to your opinion

AKK

No shame at all. You can enjoy parks without any background knowledge. I love castle because it is beautiful, not because it is Cinderella castle, I do not even like Cinderella story, I am missing absolutely nothing. There are plenty of Disney movies I do not like or never even saw and still having fun in parks.
Disney parks are good enough to wow you without any sort of history lessons and it is not a museum to learn and it is not exactly a historical site to get a background story. Parks are just parks, that is all.
If you know more, good for you but please do not think that those who don't missing a thing.

Actually, I'm not convinced that knowing the history does add to my enjoyment. I don't ride Toy Story, for example, thinging about the history of Pixar or what contributions Disney made to movies. I don't look at the castle and have any thoughts about the history of its creation or the castle after which is was designed or even, frankly, Cinderella, Snow White or Sleeping Beauty (and that comment by the PP doesn't even make sense - it is Cinderella's castle, so why would the history of Snow White or Sleeping Beauty matter, if one is supposed to only care about true Disney history of things).

Note - I said MY enjoyment. I'm perfectally happy to believe that it adds to the enjoyment of others. I just don't understand why some of the PPs cannot understand that it doesn't add to the enjoyment of everyone.

I agree with you completely.

While I think some of the history and behind the scenes stuff is pretty cool, I don't need to know it to have a good time at WDW. Too bad some people can't see that and feel the need to feel superior because they do.

This is the beauty of Disney: that anyone and everyone can enjoy the parks on different levels, and it's all valid. Sure, I may be one of those who is obsessed with the parks history, philosophy, and Disney, but I loved when my then toddler son just enjoyed the colors and characters. And now, my tween nephew loves the thrill rides for the thrills, and my parents just like to stroll around World Showcase, without knowing the history that I obsess over ... there's something for everyone, and we can all enjoy it together ...

And isn't that what Walt Disney wanted in the first place?

Well that seems to be the core of the issue...........I feel that you lose a lot in not knowing the man or the history of his time. Disney parks have a rich history and story line and IMHO are not just parks..........its a whole *Disney Experience*........ Not knowing it, or understanding it, that's a shame and a loss. Some people agree and others don't.

We all can have our opinions.:thumbsup2

Why is it I have to agree that the history doesn't add to other enjoyment, when my whole point is that without knowing the background or history of the man or his times, you cannot understand what your losing out on?...........

I agree. Although I do know some history about Walt, its not necessary for the enjoyment of the parks at all. But its like with any forum that 'specialises' in a particular subject - it serves as a platform for some ... imparting their knowledge to others is a positive thing, for a few its a "Look at me, I know more than you, therefore I am better than you" ... just like in real life there is a class system here but its knowledge based rather than financially based :)

And no, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone in particular

I also know the history of this place but I will never say that it is shame that someone is not like me. I think this is why people have problem with your argument. Knowing history does not add to my enjoyment, not knowing history does not subtract from others experience. Disney experience is what you experience there, in parks, resort, not History Channel. Maybe when you go, you feel you visit a historical site but most of us visist to have fun and relax and we do succed, do not doubt it.

Did you bother reading my post? I said that I do know a lot about the history but that the history is not what I am thinking about when viewing the castle or riding rides. Therefore, my knowledge of the history is not adding to my enjoyment. I did not say that I didn't know the history - I said that knowing it was not making a difference to my enjoyment. And, yes, I can state that with certainity since I learned much of the history between visits - thus I have a before and after comparison.

Well your entitled to your view and I am entitled to mine........AKK.

Except that mine is not an opinion - it is a fact. *I* did not get any extra enjoyment at WDW after learning about the history, compared to trips before I knew the history. This is not something with which you can disagree - other than to call me a liar, I guess.

Look, honest opinion ,not putting anyone down, I don't think your being objective.....my opinion.......knowing the man and the history of his time has to have some degree of effect.......

Your free to say what you want

Got it - going with the calling me a liar route.

I'm out of this discussion - it is clear that you are just going to keep banging on your single note piano.

When you say, "it's a shame not to know history of place you go to..." you do put people down.

Hi AKK,

As you can see people can enjoy WDW on different levels and in different layers, from enjoying the mulisensory experience to delving into the history an philosophy of the place.

As a student of Disney history, you surely know this Walt Disney quote, right? -->

"I would rather entertain and hope people learned something that educate people and hope that they are entertained."

So, as much as I like the history, I am happy to see my son enjoy the characters, my nephew enjoy the thrill rides, and my parents see the sights without them knowing the history ... And I am happy to do it together, because as you well know as a student of Disney history that's the way Walt wanted it, right?

I agree with you completely.

Are they truly acting superior? Or are they just stating something they feel passionate about?

I don't understand why there cannot be more live and let live on this board!! :confused3

Some of us want to know about all things Disney, some of us could give a hoot, some of us just want to know the fastest way to Space Mountain, and some of us want to know the best way to get to Universal from Disney. It's all good.
