We have just returned from our six day holiday trip. No matter how many times we have vacationed in the world, it is always a learning experience.

Below is a copy of my pre-trip report I posted last month on the Pre-trip Report Board. If you read it previously, skip through it please.

Pre-trip Report:
To give you a little background on how this trip was planned for therapy…..you will note that my address is on the Gulf Coast. Hurricane Katrina wiped out most of our city (and our neighboring cities also.) We had to swim out of our house (note to anyone evacuating in water – never wear flip flops-) and then begin the long process of cleaning and rebuilding. There was very little “magic” in our lives during this time. While we worked at night we would talk about how we would reward ourselves when we were finished……..of course this meant none other than a visit to the mouse.
At this time we had very few restaurants in our area…..fine dining was the Waffle House…..can you imagine how great it was to plan our ADR’s where our biggest decision would not be if we wanted our hash browns smothered or cheesed.
Now I have always taken planning to the next level (how great it was to find out that there are a lot of people just like me!) so the minute (OK-maybe the next day) a bookstore reopened we replaced all of our “WDW books” and the serious planning began. DD wanted the Wilderness Lodge – her very favorite. I wanted POR because it was one of the few resorts we have not stayed at. DS wanted the Boardwalk and my husband, who will go along with anything connected to WDW, remained neutral. But because of the teacher discount and the location, we decided on the Dolphin. We also decided that we would fly. (I really mean “they” – I do not like to fly. And to add to my anxiety, we have a morning flight – too early for alcohol unless I want to look like a lush.) We live about 10 hours from Orlando and have always driven in the past – but it is four against one, so we fly. Now my only disappointment was that we were not able to book the dining plan. I keep forgetting that the Swan and Dolphin are not really “Disney” hotels. But with all of the weight we have gained from MRE’s and rewarding ourselves with food, it is probably a blessing in disguise.
Our daughter was married last year so the family of four grew to five. Our new son-in-law, more country than turnip greens, has never been on a family vacation – grounds for child abuse. We did explain to him that he would love WDW – it is a family rule.
So as we finished each project in the house we would sit around and mull through the books, working on itineraries and ride strategies like it was our first trip, instead of our 20th . As soon as internet was restored to the house, I was back on the disboards. Going back on line that first day was almost (not quite) the same feeling you get when you pass through the entrance to the World. I was on my way home.

The planning and anticipation was a great way to get through a trying time. So now our house is finished (and beautiful I might add) and we are going to spend Thanksgiving with the mouse…….still cheaper than therapy. How lucky can a family be.

But..

Even the best laid plans can go awry…..so much for having all of my ducks in a row so to speak. The ADR’s were the easy part….. as I told you….we just aren’t that hard to please. It does not take much to taste better than beanie weenies and canned Vienna sausages. As I read the trip reports (and some of them rank up there with the best I have ever read) the bookings began: Chefs of France (I made this one within minutes of reading Mel’s account); LeCellier; Mama Melroses; O’Hana’s; Whispering Canyon; Prime Time Diner and Hollywood & Vine. Most of the places we had eaten at before and some were new.

So now we sit, fat and happy, just counting down the days…..the hotel is booked, the flight plans are booked and we are very pleased with our ADR’s. At this point, I was feeling rather smug……I do not think God likes “smugness.” Delta decided they would no longer offer a direct route from my house to the mouse. However, they forgot to tell the people in charge of sales and reservations. Our flight had been cancelled – but it seemed that no one knew – except us….and the newspaper…..and the airport…..but not Delta employees!! We were finally "rebooked" on a one stop flight...and then rebooked five more times. Oh well, here goes.....

The cast:

DH – Curtis….wonderful husband, as addicted to WDW as I am
DD - Lindsey – the very best person to go through a hurricane with – she keeps her wits while you are worrying about how you are going to keep your cell phone dry.
DD’s husband, Josh – very country, who should have been named Bubba, Beau, Earl, or Junior ……...really great guy who hasn’t a clue as to what to expect.
DS – Curt – just finished his second year of doctoral studies at MS State – unmarried, but I am working on it.

And me – Annette , Career Center Director for our local high school…used to chaperone the senior trip to (you won’t believe it) Disneyworld….when we had senior trips.

The night before –

My usual pre-trip enthusiasm had been tempered with the ever changing airline reservations. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing….the more I read about last minute changes, overbooking and bumping, the more worried I became….and to think we thought flying was going to simplify the trip.

We decided that since we were flying we would not bring the usual snacks, breakfast items, etc. But I somehow found myself in Sams, buying a mountain of things….so much for packing light.

We did a final check on the weather forecast (it was supposed to be mild with just chilly nights), printed out the boarding passes, copied the ticket numbers (we bought our tickets from MapleLeaf so they were not in the Disney data base under our name ) and went to bed. Much like the latest Disney commercial – we were all too excited to sleep.

Day One – The trip begins. Other than the fact that I hate to fly (I believe I have mentioned that before) the flight was a good one. We had no hidden surprises, no last minute changes and more importantly, no bumping. Since our first night was booked at the All Stars Family Suite, we were able to use Magical Express for our transportation to the resort. ME was magical – we arrived at our hotel within 50 minutes of arriving at the airport. We were very impressed with the family suite – I almost wished we had booked our entire stay there. The suite is large with a bedroom, living room, small kitchen area and two full baths. Five adults had plenty of room….however my son did say the chair that made into a bed was not the most comfortable thing he had ever slept on. Both the living room and bedroom had large t.v.s. The location of the suites is great…close to the food court.

We spent the afternoon in EPCOT which to our delight, was not crowded. We had not made any dinner reservations for the first night so we ate at the Cantina in Mexico….one of our favorite counter service restaurants. A few hours around the countries and back to the hotel. As promised, all of our luggage had been safely delivered while we were at the park. I am feeling the magic....

I too love the outside Mexican food......sounds like a good plan so far.....thanks for posting

Spent the day and the extra evening hours at the Magic Kingdom – my favorite park. Finally got to see Mickey’s Philharmagic- for some reason we missed it on our last trips. After lunch we boarded the boat for Tom Sawyer’s Island. DSL could have spent the whole afternoon there….

We had dinner reservations at O’Hana’s, which was our favorite meal of the trip. We had 6:30 reservations and had to wait about 30 minutes. But once inside, we were served immediately and the service was impeccable. I know some posters have said that they preferred the old menu. Not having eaten there before, with nothing to compare, we were thoroughly pleased with the offerings. The appetizers of marinated shrimp, chicken wings and homemade tortilla chips and dips were great. The skewered meat was delicious, as were the potatoes and vegetables…..but our very favorite was the dessert. The bread pudding with ice cream and caramel bananas foster sauce was to die for. We left stuffed and happy. All was good………

we are on our way in 13 days....Sounds like the meal at Ohanas was fantastic.....yummy....I love to hear other peoples dining menus..

Thanks for that

Wow, I'm glad Delta came through for you. My husband was in Atlanta GA, loast month and Delta cancelled his flight. He had to find other arrangements to get home.

Glad you liked O'hana's. I am still trying to decide if I should make an ADR there.

We will definitely eat at O'hanas every time we go. The wait staff was wonderful...not once did we have to ask for anything...and the seating was soooo comfortable....great chairs.

Ahh yes, there's nothing like a trip to The House of Mouse to ease a weary soul and body....

Nice start, I look forward to more! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the comments - here we go with Day 3.

Early entry day at Animal Kingdom……we should have known better. When the early entry program started some years back, it was a great idea. A lot of people did not know about it and you really did have an hour in the park that was less crowded. Not anymore. Every guest, from every resort (at least it seemed that way), headed to Animal Kingdom at 7:30 a.m. We thought the ideal plan would be to ride Expedition Everest, then get a fast pass for EE and go on to the safari ride……..so did everyone else entering the park. When we got to EE (walking rather briskly) there was already a line of hundreds of people. We had to wait a while in the queue for the fast pass and then walked over to the safari. It was a cool morning and the animals were active….it was a great ride. DSL went through a roll of film. On to Dinosaur – the wait said 20 minutes but it was actually 60 – we almost missed EE – which after the fact would have been a blessing. DH and I are not roller coaster buffs. Everyone said it was a mild ride…they lied.

We ate lunch at the Flametree Barbeque (another of our counter service favorites.) It took almost 45 minutes to place our order……cashier was encountering multiple problems with guests who were using the dining plan. Finally, we were served and the ribs and sandwiches were up to their usual standard. The rib plate is so large it can easily be shared. My daughter and I shared – it makes us feel less guilty ordering big desserts that way.

After lunch the crowds began to get unbearable so we headed back to the hotel for a nap and cold drink. (After staying the first night at the All Stars, we transferred to the Dolphin for the remainder of the stay – every good thing that was posted about the Dolphin is true. We loved this hotel!!) On our first day we had purchased refillable mugs for everyone – we do this at every resort we stay at. Using them in the morning for coffee (Starbucks at the Dolphin) and drinks in the afternoon and evening- they pay for themselves the first day.

Early evening we headed to MGM. You can either walk to MGM or ride a boat from the Dolphin…..this was a great change from the buses. Our party of five split up for dinner. DD and DSL had never eaten at the 50’s Prime Time Diner. DH, DS and I had reservations at Hollywood and Vine. I think H & V is one restaurant that has revues that range from the worst to the best. We had eaten there last May and loved it…my son wanted to return. We only waited a few minutes – got a good table location and a wonderful waiter. All three of us found the food to be very good (it is our number 3 favorite on this vacation – you will hear about number 2 later) I started out with boiled shrimp, Caesar salad and a few other salads I was not familiar with. The entrees included prime rib, a wonderful baked fish, roasted pork loin and a number of chicken, beef and pasta dishes. The dessert offerings were not exceptional, but the berry cobbler, soft serve and mascarpone cheesecake were great for us. All in all, it was a good meal with a great wait staff.

We reconnected with DD and DSL. They enjoyed Prime Time. They did not have much interaction with their waiter, but they did enjoy the fried chicken and meat loaf.

The weather was really turning cold…. a mad scramble for purchasing hats, gloves, etc. We walked around MGM, took a lot of pictures (we decided early on that we would purchase the $99 CD so we made sure we took lots of pictures on our photopass. We never took pictures entering the park - too much of a hurry to get to rides - but when the parks get really busy it was a great time to have the photos made - and the parks were gorgeous with all of the decorations) and shopped before returning to the hotel with those heavenly beds. The day ended still feeling the magic!!

Oh No! I was already nervous about riding EE! Is it really that bad???

We love the Friendship boats! Glad you liked your stay at the Dolphin!

We are planning on buying the $99 PhotoPass CD, too. Did you get yours at the end of your trip, or did you order it when you got home? Have you tried to print any yet?

Great trip report so far! I can't wait to read more!

Happy Holidays!

Michelle,

EE is probably nothing to those people who lover coasters. Space Mountain is about as much as I can handle. My son, who loves thrill rides, thought it was pretty mild. He did say the scenery was great....I wouldn't know because I closed my eyes on the first drop and didn't open them until we stopped.

The photo pass is one of the greatest bargains - if you would usually purchase pictures taken in the park. With the first picture taken you are given the Photopass. Midway during the trip we went into the photo center in the MK to check out the pictures we had taken to date and to get some more info. At that time, we have about 15 pictures on the card. The girl that waited on us said just to keep taking pictures (and lots of them) and then to come back on our last day. We ended up taking 67 pictures (if you have more than two in your group you can ask the photographer to take miltiple pictures, i.e. the kids, the parents, etc.). I paid $99 plus tax and they gave me a CD. We loaded it on our computer when we got home. Through the Wal Mart photo shop I ordered prints of all of them plus 3 5x7's and my total bill was under $10.00. I am a bit technology challenged...I am hoping to add a picture or two to my next day's posting. We will see.

I bought the Photopass CD when we were there last week (they did it for me at the Camera Center at the entrance of Epcot) We only had 18 pictures on ours but for me, it was still worth it because they got some great photos of DD4 and I (and as a single mom, I'm usually the photographer so it's rare that we have pictures of the two of us) as well as photos of us with our traveling buddies (we traveled with another single mom and her DD5) As a matter of fact, I'm using one of those photos for our Christmas card. I've been printing them out on my home printer and they look great.

The only thing I didn't like about Photopass was that they couldn't include our Buzz Lightyear ride photo and our CRT and CM character meals photos on it, too.

This was our “dork” day. I had read on the boards where a family all wore the same tees and it made for great pictures. We got the idea to wear the same colors – good in theory. We felt a bit foolish dressed alike for the day – but it did make for a good picture.

.

Early morning hour at EPCOT – you would think we had learned our lesson from the Animal Kingdom. We went straight to Test Track. My DSL loves anything that can be driven or shot (let me clarify that – he loves NASCAR and hunting) He was all about the Test Track. We rode it twice (getting a fast pass for Soarin’ – my favorite ride- in between. Everyone had the same idea we did. But we managed to see “Honey, I shrunk the audience” before we headed to the Wilderness Lodge for lunch. We had eaten there once before and loved the skillet lunch. I know the Whispering Canyon is known for its lively lunch – we just didn’t expect that much lively. The lunch started off badly with a very arrogant man handling the reservations. He was so rude to an elderly woman who did not have a reservation – he must have thought he worked at the Four Seasons instead of Whispering Canyon. We were finally seated to a table for four. Now our party of five had three men over 6’ and two women who are not anorexic. When we complained our waitress just pulled up another chair and said “ya’ll can fit in here.” This lunch was great for some of the families with small children – but not the best atmosphere for adults. Our waitress got so caught up in the game playing and trying to embarrass people, she neglected her “waitressing” – we had to ask three times for drinks. Finally had to ask someone else which really ticked her off. Needless to say, the service was horrible. The food was good, but it is difficult to enjoy your meal with nothing to drink. That was the last time we will eat at WC. Road the boat back to MK…very crowed…took a picture and left.

After a little rest at the hotel, we returned to EPCOT. We decided that we would just snack and drink around the countries. The guys loved the German beer. I can do without the beer – give me funnel cakes!! While the guys headed to the UK to try the ale, DD and I headed to France for pastries and hot chocolate. The evening was very cold (much more so than earlier predicted) so the hot chocolate was a welcomed hand and body warmer. We picked up some extra pastries for breakfast and headed back to the hotel to watch the MK’s fireworks from our window. Since we were walking back to the hotel, we stopped at Spoodles on the Boardwalk for a pizza. Their pizzas are wonderful!!!!

Before the trip my DD was being treated for some stomach problems. It was probably a combination of the junk we consumed, but when we got back to the hotel she was really ill. I won’t go into the graphic details, but I was up a good portion of the night with her. Thankfully, I always pack the entire medicine cabinet so I had something to give her. She didn’t get to sleep until almost 5 a.m. I knew we would have to adjust the next day’s schedule – she was really feeling badly.

Sorry to read day four went so badly. Hope your next day is better. I'll be waiting to find out. :surfweb:
