Thanksgiving in a new seting

Can't wrap my mind the fact that I am eating at Dennys for Thanksgiving. Do you think I can still get Ham and pumkin Pie and Stuffing. I know it is not about the food it is about family however I would like for somethings to be the same

you need to "rethink" what the holidays mean. :

I am a waitress. for me, and my family, the holidays mean: I worK! sometimes I get off, sometimes not.

last year, my sons spent thanksgiving with us, our turn. I managed to getthe day off, (so I spent the whole day in the kitchen ) this year, it is the in-laws turn. works out that hubby's birthday LANDS on thanksgiving this year. I could work, and make money, but don't want to leave hubby on his birthday. I WILL work on christmas eve AND christmas.. (all you people who go out for dinner on te holidays.... PLEASE. TIP TIP TIP your servers WELL!!!!

wouldn't you know.. this year I won a 20 poundtukey in a VFW raffle!!! couldn't have won it LAST year, when it was OUR turn to have the kids and grandkids.... NO! hubby and I will be eating turkey for a long time! but we will be at the Moose lodge, for Tom and Jerrys, and then have a quiet dinner ad movies at home, and lots of leftovers. (I'm sure the boys will come over during theweek, when I am off work for my famous turkey casserole, which they LOVE!)

I am sorry you might end up at "dennys". at least you will be with your family. please make SURE to leave your server AT LEAST 20%, or more,since she is working the holiday, and is NOT with HER family!

I will "celebrate" Christmas with my family the saturday before. christmas eve and christmas day , I will be at the restaurant, working. many people these days choose to go with the great buffets, with carving stations we offer, than cook themselves.
so before you "pooh-pooh" the thanksgiving you might have, remember, you will be WITH your family. (no, I don't work at Dennys, I work at Wine and Roses Steak House in Illinois). one Easter, we spent it at Old Country Buffet, cause everone was too tired to cook.(before I had to work every Easter)
Point being, if you are lucky enough to be with your family on a Holiday, just go wth the flow. enjoy the dinner... no one has to spend the wholeday in the kitchen, then retire to someone's house for dessert and coffee and games.
and ENJOY being together!!!!!! and... PLEASE.... remember that server with AT LEAST 20% on a holiday!!!!!!

my point being, be happy everyone can get together...where ever it is.!!

A lot of people spend have their Thanksgiving meal in restaurants. I would imagine they would have a special Thanksgiving menu. Why not call and ask, that way if they don't you can plan to eat elsewhere.

I just made a roast chicken, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, along with pumpkin pie for dinner on Sunday.

It is a very inexpensive meal to learn how to make.

You know, I've seen you plugging for 20% tips on here before and I'm sorry, but just because it's a holiday doesn't mean you automatically deserve 20%. Heck, even if it's not a holiday, you don't deserve it. You have to earn it.

I was a waitress for 12 years so I do have some experience. I never "expected" to get 20%. Yes, I was not pleased when I gave excellent service and was either stiffed or received a 10% tip or less but there were times when we were slammed and I was in the weeds so bad that I was just grateful for whatever I got.

When the restaurant was full (seated approx. 100) and there was a line-up out the door, and only 3 waitresses I was not physically able to give top-notch service to everyone. Sometimes I could only go back to a table once. So I did not "earn" a 20% tip during those times. Sometimes people were understanding and gave it anyway, but there were those who thought they were the only customers in the restaurant and were oblivious to the fact that you were running around like a chicken with your head cut off and they either stiffed you or gave a very small tip.

My point is, just because it's a holiday you shouldn't "expect" a great tip.

You have to earn it.

It shouldn't matter what you eat. Hamburgers on the grill can be special, if you're eating with your loved ones.

But I imagine Denny's will have turkey dinners with all the trimmings. Not sure about ham, as that's really not a "traditional" Thanksgiving Day food. Why not call them and ask? Or get on their website and see?

They darn well SHOULD have pumpkin pie! One of the things I drool over at Denny's are the lovely pies. I don't know if they taste as good as they look, but they certainly put on a good show!

I think that wherever you and your family can be together for a meal can be Thanksgiving. The meaning of the holiday is celebrating having enough food to eat and surviving a trying time. (heh, grew up in Plymouth MA) So it seems to me as though wherever you and your family get together will be a Thanksgiving dinner.

If they don't, do you have anyplace like a Ryan's or Golden Corral that you could go to instead? I'd be shocked if they didn't have traditional Thanksgiving foods that day.

This thread reminds me - I think I saw a movie recently (though I don't think it's new; it was on television) where the main character ends up at Denny's with his kids for either Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, and they end up really angry because there isn't turkey available (or something like that). The parents might have been divorced? I know everyone is angry and no one is getting along. That's going to drive me crazy until I can remember what it was.

OP, I'm sorry about your grandmother. Denny's isn't your only option, though. There are other places that could have better menu options, you can do a traditional meal at home w/o cooking if you order a cooked meal from the supermarket, or maybe even make it a potluck event with every person bringing a dish. If you're set on Denny's, call ahead to make sure they are serving turkey if that's what you want.
