Thanks, I Hate It - Disney by non-Disney Fans (DUN)

I have done a couple of big family trips. When my mother passed away she left me a significant amount of money. Her big thing was family and making memories. So, sine my 2 daughters were married to military men and rarely were we all together, I planned around PCSs, deploying and work to bring my 3 children and 6 grandchildren together for wonderful trips to WDW! We stayed club level at Beach Club one trip and Boardwalk another. We planned one family dinner together, the kids decided which parks to go to, some went together, one family took older kids, the other took younger kids. One night my husband and I watched the 2 youngest so everyone else could enjoy late nights in the parks. This was all pre Covid! We would meet in the lounge in the morning and late afternoon and talk. Swim together and see each other at different times during the day. They were the best trips ever! We weren’t all together 24/7 and the kids had a ball. My mother would have loved it. The 2 oldest are now in college, 2 middle ones in middle school and the 2 youngest in elementary school. We are trying to replicate a trip for December for my 70th birthday . The kids would come for the weekend part due to school commitments, but it would be fun

Daaaaaaaang- what a disastrous trip! And so short! Flying all the way there and only doing a handful seems unfortunate. Disney is best enjoyed over a wider period of time so that you can sort of not have to worry about "doing as much as possible" in one day, or be trapped in endless lines. It was monstrously busy last November, but I made it work through just spreading things out.

Seems like spring crowds are just a constant- I haven't checked a crowd calendar in a while, but they haven't steered me wrong until 2021- it seems that things are just unpredictable now.

Going with an entire family group seems like a nightmare- I plan things as much as your SIL does, it seems, but leave windows open for the occasional "do whatever I feel like". But it's a lot easier with one person! The other way just leaves one person dictating "The schedule of fun" for a disparate group, which never works!

PS I'm super-jealous of all the faves and likes your posts are getting, lol. I only get one per post for my Trip Reports! I should start having a crappier time at the Parks!

I was nervous to do my first solo trip, but now I honestly find myself wishing I was solo when I go with others. Only time I miss other people is at table service restaurants, but I just go to slower restaurants and chat with the cast members and answer emails and update friends and family via text.
I'm the same way- I always thought it'd be "weird" to go solo and so I spent my 20s not going to Disney at all, but when everyone else started having babies I was left with no other option and just started doing it... I liked it MUCH more solo than I probably ever would with other people. I think the more people in your group just means that at least 1 person will be made to do something they dislike for hours. And that's just too much in a place as expensive and as "you're privileged to visit" as Disney. There's enough there to satisfy ANY adult, so you're better off just splitting up if you hate certain things.

The "Endless Browsers" would drive me insane, especially some of the stories here of "old ladies who expect us to just visit with them while they browse for hours" - the poutiness and entitledness of "I deserve all of your time!" would get to me, haha.

Props to you for going in August. Talk about Dante's circle of Hell, you'll be in the center of it! Flew into Orlando, once, in August for a work trip. Pretty sure my skin was melting off my body. Good luck!
We've all spent quite a bit of time in Brazil visiting the in-laws over the years - no air conditioning in the peak of summer. I'm hoping that was sufficient training ground on what to expect! With some strategic planning, and a Boardwalk resort so we can have a mid-day return to the hotel, I'm thinking we'll be OK.

When my mother passed away she left me a significant amount of money. Her big thing was family and making memories.
That's such a nice tribute to your mum - I did the same thing! My mum didn't have much, but when she passed, I thought about what she would have wanted me to do with it. So... some into DS's education fund, and then I bought three "no expiry" Canadian resident 25% 10 day parkhopper waterpark tickets. I know she would have loved to have "gifted" us a trip.

DAY 4: DISNEY SPRINGS/TRAVEL #2

We waste no time packing the car. My mother informs us that my brother's flight was delayed three hours. I have no sympathy to spare.

Our flight doesn't leave until the evening, so we need to find some way to waste more time. We head to Disney Springs to meet up with my wife's lifelong friend. Somehow we didn't know until now that she's a Disney cast member. I offer my apologies, for what little they matter. But more importantly, we have a Disney expert in our group. I can shut down my brain and wait for the caffeine to kick in. Somebody besides my SIL can take point for a while.

We head to World of Disney to pick out souvenirs. I'm little more than a walking shopping cart. The child wants her own Minnie ears? Sure. A puzzle of the stretching room from Haunted Mansion? Fine. A Zero shoulder buddy? Cute. The umpteenth stuffie from this trip? Whatevs. The trinkets keep manifesting in my hands, I do not know from where. It's not until checkout that something is amiss. Wait, how many digits in the total? WARNING! WARNING! GET THAT BRAIN BOOTED BACK UP, STAT!

My wallet lighter but my hands heavier, we grab a bite to eat from Chicken Guy. It's good. Way more subdued than anything I'd expect from Guy "FLAVORTOWN!!!!" Fieri.

The child begins to whine about her feet. Me too offspring, but we must press on. Time will not kill itself, but I wish it could.

The complaints from the little one continue to build. I offer to buy a milkshake to calm her. My daughter eagerly asks for strawberry, and I quickly remind that she always asks for strawberry even though she HATES strawberry. She settles on chocolate. Two sips later and she decides she doesn't like chocolate either. My smile masks the screaming on the inside.

We head to the Dole Whip stand. They should have vanilla, and the pineapple will sate my fury. The cast member tells us they're out of lemon. I inquire if they have vanilla. She happily confirms that yes, they do indeed offer the most inoffensive flavor. We reach the counter. The vanilla soft serve machine is broken. The cast member's betrayal stings deeper than my sunburn.

Is this hell? I'm convinced that I died at some point on this trip, and I'll be trapped in Walt's legacy for the rest of eternity. Did I smack my head on the hill for Pirates? If that's the case, I can only hope my corpse defecated all over the bench before they hauled it away.

We've all reached our limit. We head to the airport. We've arrived too early, and we need to wait nine minutes before we can check our bag. The nexus of suffering refuses to let us escape.

The flight is a welcome moment of calm. I spend it watching Mad Max: Fury Road, a grim reminder of the trip that I've just completed.

We reach our destination. Six flights must all share a single baggage claim. They graciously open a second, but can't decide which flights will be dumped on the belt. A hundred tired travelers groan in unison with each announcement. The shared disappointment makes me feel as though I'm not alone in this world.

As theme park veterans, we were vigilant about taking photos of our parking spots throughout this trip. Unfortunately, we forgot to take ONE. I run around in the rain, pounding the car alarm button praying to hear a honk. If my little hatchback is buried underneath some lifted pickup truck, it would be the cherry on top of this turd sundae.

The drive home is uneventful. The gas station is uneventful. The gas station hot dogs, while a poor life decision, are also uneventful. Uneventful is good. Uneventful can't hurt me.

I let out an audible grunt when I crash on the couch.

It's finally over.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I hear you about the cost and anguish of Disney parks. DH and I have a 10 day ticket to Universal burning a hole in our pocket. I'm worried, though, that if we don't stay at a deluxe Universal resort, we will be waiting in lines forever, and we really can't afford those deluxe resorts. DD will be 10 next February when we usually travel. She likes Harry Potter but isn't like a HUGE fan. Should we wait to go when she is older? Any other suggestions of places to stay for Universal?

What do you do when you move to live in town next to DisneyWorld and your family visit once and decides to move to the same location!
I guess we be Celebratin whether we like it or not!
No turning back now !!!

I didn’t even think my daughter liked Disney! I mean she would rather sleep on NYE than simply take elevator to Top of the World every year to watch fireworks!

I saw this at Publix yesterday and thought of you :

”For those who like strawberry lemonade and drinking beer “
I want the matching t-shirt!

Most people get Universal done in 2 to 3 days without EP, with EP usually a day or two.

We go 3 days normally without EP. This will actually be out first trip staying onsite at Universal (next month) and we're staying 2 nights at Endless Summer Surfside (their lowest priced place) and 1 day at Royal Pacific (1 of their 3 premier hotels/top level) to get EP for 2 days (check in and check out day). Ordinarily we would not do this but have been wanting to stay onsite at Universal and try it out. We have 3 day passes from 2017 we're using.

With 10 days at Universal you'll be fine :) it's more than enough without EP too. If I were you I would take that time to spread out things so you don't become bored, take it slower, rather than rush rush rush.

As far as the age there are a few things I would consider

1) Height of your daughter
2) Thrill level

You might go through Universal's website at their attractions for this to get an idea for the value of your 10 days there with the interest level of your traveling party. Keep in mind Universal is presently building a 3rd gate called Epic Universe, construction is back on and is presently slated to be open by summer of 2025. I have no idea what Universal will do when it comes to previously purchased tickets at that point because the tickets were bought when there were only 2 parks (and then their water part Volcano Bay). Just mentioning that since you talked about potentially waiting. There may be a good reason to wait for then but your previously purchased tickets would be up in the air right now with no official wording on how Universal will treat those.

Universal is a ton of fun though! You don't have to be a mega HP fan to appreciate all they've done there.

No …Go…. I LOVE Universal Studios Orlando but the best time is for the holidays !
They have so much holiday music and every year they add more holiday decorations and holiday lights. I swear it feels like the Spectacle of Lights left DisneyWorld and moved to Universal!
And I love the Grinch more than Mickey . I just visited for their incredible Mardi Gras Celebration … their Mardi Gras floats are designed by same artists that design the New Orleans Floats.
And they actually have team members that love and enjoy guests!
I need to discover Universal on the 4th of July but Mardi Gras starts early in Feb so maybe you will get lucky.
I have AP and sometimes just go to sit at the Starbucks in CityWalk and get VooDoo donuts and watch people arriving !
You can jump on boats and check out the other resorts and the landscaping along their river journey is beautiful and relaxing.
Hard Rock is fun to vist their lobby and I love to sit at their poolside bar for great hamburger and enjoy the coolness vibe even tho I’m not staying their! And the Adventura Resort has an incredible rooftop view that is just elevator trip to top. Be sure to take the boat to Sapphire Falls and walk thru their lobby to enter Aventura Resort next door. And then cross street to check out Cabana Bay . They have upper level lobby that has a great Arcade and Bowling Alley.
CityWalk also has a double sided mini golf located kinda below the AMC Theatre.
You will have 10 days of fun !

I forgot to mention Disney has confetti and fake snow but Universal has Magic Confetti that sparkles as parades travel thru Universal Studios .. You dont have to just stand in front of a castle .
Magic confetti everywhere!

DD is tall for her age AND loves thrill rides (me and DH not so much), which is why we thought if we waited until she was a bit older we could bring her with a friend to go on those rides.

Where should we stay if we don't stay on property? We don't want to rent a car. Thanks!

We stayed at Cabana Beach resort Presidents Day week/end 2020....just before Covid (in fact, we were supposed to go spring break 2020, which have put us traveling there during the first day of shutdown, luckily with husband's work schedule we had to move the trip up). This gave us access to the early morning but not the express pass. Presidents Day week isn't comparable to going during Christmas, for example, but I would say it definitely calls for significantly heavier crowds than usual.

The lines were frustratingly long, and I did feel kind of like a second class citizen watching the Express passers swan by, but we did get everything done we wanted to do in two days. I think our longest wait was the Forbidden Journey, which was about 75 min, in the middle of the day. We did Hulk right before park closing and the wait was about 35 minutes. We did Escape to Gringotts right away at early opening, then did Fast and Furious and Transformers, and all were close to walk ons. By like 10 or 11 am it got pretty busy and waits were averaging 45-60 min per ride, with the exception of Hagrids, (but express passes will do you no good there anyways).

My advice is, stay on property at one of the less expensive places. Early mornings and evenings just before closing tended to be fairly quiet, and you can get a lot done. The shuttles are a convenient way to take breaks from the park, and the value resorts at Universal are really affordable and I think a better quality than the Disney values.

The first trip 2018 we didn’t know anything and I used points at the Holiday Inn directly across street and a TGI Fridays connected .
It was alright…
USOhave new value resorts for families on their website.
I think Universl has a bad site to navigate but I am prob so used to Disneys… Just warning you
Loews Endless Summer Resort with 2 Resorts
Dockside Inn and Surfside Resorts.

Yes they have great bus shuttles and early first hour entry for on site guests for Universal Resorts trip planning.
Hope you have great luck w/ planning .
I don’t know if you are familiar with how easy it is to walk from DL/ DCA / Downtown Disney and Disney resort properties but USO is compact but has a lot of choices unlike WDW expanse ( and expense )…
