AMEN!

:dancer: :dancer: :dancer:

Christian(11), my MR/autistic son, started his summer camp yesterday and I don't know who was happier :teeth: . The first thing he did was run through a pack of Big Boys playing basketball--you should have seen their faces when they turned to race up court and there stood Christian, flappin' and grinnin' :scared1: To their credit, they nearly tore their knees out trying not to run over him and I quickly corraled Christian to the sidelines. I don't suppose Dateline will be running a story on him, haha

:worship: I am so grateful to Cobb Parks & Recreation. This is Christian's 4th yr and for the first time he is not the youngest kid. The staff has all been there for years and they know his little quirks. This year the manager assigned not one, but TWO wranglers to Christian--he just about wears them out! Thankfully, he is a sweet boy and doesn't really have any bad behaviors(other than repeatedly locking himself inside the ball closet!) :jumping1:

Today they are taking him shopping for Father's Day and to the movies(good luck with that :dance3: ) and Thursday they're going to the zoo. Yippee!

Cathy--so glad to get her life back...summer is hard for autistic kids(and their parents! )

Cathy,

I am glad you are getting a few hours of well deserved rest. Is this a sleep over camp or an all day one? I know you must love your son but you do deserve some time for yourself. Does camp last more than one week?
Enjoy your time - and do some things for yourself!

Cathy

I was just speaking to my cousin who has a 7 year old who is also autistic. His program is winding down for 2 weeks, and then the kids in his particular class will start back up again, because they so desperately crave the routine. He adores my DS who is only a year older than him, so we'll be heading over for a day or two once DS is out of school.

It sounds like you've found a GREAT summer program. Not easy.

Enjoy some well deserved down time!!!

It's a summer day camp. Christian is low-functioning, so it's very hard to find a place for him--all the camps want them potty-trained and fairly independent. Christian wears diapers, requires feeding & dressing, and needs constant supervision to keep him safe. We look forward to camp every summer because it provides him that much-needed routine. And it provides me with about 6hrs respite. :teeth: He goes 3 wks in June and 3 wks in July. The 2-3 wk periods between the end of school and start of camp(or end of camp and start of school) are very tough because I get absolutely NO breaks then. Thankfully, my 13yo & 19yo pitch in and help where they can. They are very good with him, but it's too much to ask them to take care of him for more than a few hours. He's pretty wearing. But sweet
