Texas

I live just east of Dallas. The numbers are going up (not dramatically) in our little county. There were more people wearing masks at the grocery store today then there were last week. Most of my friends are taking this seriously though there is one or two that do not.

Unfortunately a lot of people lost faith and trust in leaders who were so insistent on safety and slowing the spread who then condoned or turned a blind eye to thousands of people out in the streets protesting.

It was a hypocrisy a lot of people were not willing to overlook, and I believe it led to people being much more casual with the whole social distancing and mask wearing. I even heard someone say “Welp...quarantine’s over!” in response to the whole situation.

I’m not saying it is right or wrong, but just that it could be a reason for the spikes. When people in leadership lose their credibility, people are going to be much less willing to go along with what they say.

You shouldn't believe the narrative coming from the usual suspects in the media. The exact same people pushing this narrative obviously think we can't remember back to the very first protests that astroturf groups organized and promoted. They think that we can't remember that they condoned, hyped, and promoted said protests and claimed covid was a hoax and slogans of Free State X. and that these freedom fighters had a first amendment right to do it. Well what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. The more recent protesters have the same right to peacefully assemble as the protesters they liked and hyped did.
Protests and hypocrisy didn't lead to anything. They were against everything from the start. And still are. And now that they were proven wrong about so many things, the first and still greatest of which is covid being a hoax, are they going to look inward and do an ounce of self examination? No they won't. Because their revenue streams depend on them not doing it. They're going to lash out and blame anyone other than themselves. And the latest protests are a convenient target. If there is any hypocrisy, it's on the part of these usual suspects.

You live in Texas? What do you think about our Covid numbers?
I don't live in Texas. But I'll answer. If Texas was looking for the opportune moment to get a handle on it while they still can....... It was last week.
It's no longer a question of while but if they still can. 6,125 with a few counties still out. On the plus side I do think if bad gets really bad Texas. may be willing to do something. That's unlike some of the other states that haven't really indicated they'll change come Hades or high water.

BTW, my area is going to nosedive in cases starting July 1. Not in actual cases. Just reported ones. You see we lost funding for tests. I don't know if the feds are responsible or the state.

Here's a song to pick you up a bit.

Are there mask mandates in the Dallas areas for businesses yet? Austin went into effect this week.
I think Dallas has them but Fort Worth, where I live, doesn't. What I want to say about our mayor WRT this would be political so I can't.
Thank you so much. We do a curbside grocery order every 10 days. Other than walks after dark when most people are inside, that's all we do. My son is still working on getting well after his illness.
We are a high-risk household so we are spending a small fortune on Amazon, Door Dash and Instacart. I haven't been impressed with the curbside options. I miss Target.

I am very unhappy with Austin. They aren't willing to lead and make wise, but unpopular decisions. Why are they allowing sleep away camps and recreational sports to operate? I can sort of understand day camps (with proper guidelines of course) because some people have no recourse but to go to work. At the same time, they are taking away the ability for counties and cities to make decisions that in their best interests regarding this.

I'm in Collin county. Our daily new case number is usually around 20. This week it's over 100 new cases per day. Mask wearing is sporadic. People are eating out, getting haircuts, etc. We are doing outdoor activities only and social distancing. I wish the media would show more Texans who have had the virus and tell their stories. I haven't heard any first hand accounts near me. Maybe people would listen if they knew people near them have it.

We are also paying the high price of living by delivery. My Amazon delivery person is my new best friend. Super nice guy, we've talked many times at a distance with my mask on, of course. But, it is getting so expensive.

Yes, I'm continually surprised by Austin and their stance on sports and recreation. Our friend's son now has Covid 19 because he trained in an indoor swim facility with other college athletes from various schools. About 30% of them have the virus now and more are going to be tested.

I feel like Collin County is not explaining their numbers well. Hospitalized patients are WAY up but elected officials can’t explain if it’s due to the virus or if it’s all patients for whatever reason.

Can I interject to day that as serious as this virus is, if you feel like something is off with you medically PLEASE seek help instead of putting it off! I'm in Texas - my brother has had stomach pains for almost a week but wouldn't go to the doctor or hospital for fear of being infected. He is in surgery right now having dead colon removed and may not make it. PLEASE don't be so afraid that you ignore warning signs!
I am sorry your brother was so afraid. I'd encourage folks to contact their provider if they have a concerning symptom.
And wear a mask. Less spread, fewer cases makes the hospital safer and more accessible.

Also know that the non-COVID patients are usually placed on separate floors or a very separate area than the COVID patients. The medical professionals know way more than they did in the early days about COVID and now know the main way it spreads is through being aerosolized. Indoor ventilation can push the virus through the air. Hence the need for masks. And also the need to separate the non-COVID patients.

One may think this is something automatically known to the general public, but, when one is thinking they are in a low risk group, WHY would they know the COVID and non-COVID patients are separated? They probably wouldn't have been paying attention to this detail. Then when they do get sick with something else, their first thought is that if they go to go to the doctor or hospital, that's when they risk getting COVID too, by going to where they are known to be :scared: :(

What state if you don't mind my asking. (Thanks for the song! Great listen right now)

My state NJ, in cahootz with NY/CT is starting this midnight- ETA
quarantine applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a 7-day rolling average or a state with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a 7-day rolling average.
10 states are on the list currently. Also heard reporting is encouraged and these quarantines may see much stricter enforcement.

RETIRED SURGEON Sam Laucks, has this to say about wearing masks:
“OK, here’s my rant about masks:

I have spent the past 39 years working in the field of surgery. For a significant part of that time, I have worn a mask. I have worked with hundreds (probably thousands) of colleagues during those years, who have also worn masks. Not a single one us of became ill, passed out or died from lack of oxygen. Not a single one of us became ill, passed out or died from breathing too much carbon dioxide. Not a single one us of became ill, passed out or died from rebreathing a little of our own exhaled air. Let’s begin here by putting those scare tactics to rest!
(It is true that some people, with advanced lung diseases, may be so fragile that a mask could make their already-tenuous breathing more difficult. If your lungs are that bad, you probably shouldn’t be going out in public at the present time anyway; the consequences if you are exposed to Covid-19 would likely be devastating.)

“But”, you ask, “can’t viruses go right through the mask, because they are so small?” (“Masks keep viruses out just as well as a chain link fence keeps mosquitoes out,” some tell us.) It is true that individual virus particles can pass through the pores of a mask; however, viruses don’t move on their own. They do not fly across the room like a mosquito, wiggle through your mask like a worm, or fly up your nose like a gnat. The virus is essentially nothing more than a tiny blob of genetic material. Covid-19 travels in a CARRIER – the carrier is a fluid droplet- fluid droplets that you expel when you cough, sneeze, sing, laugh, talk or simply exhale. Most of your fluid droplets will be stopped from entering the air in the room if you are wearing a mask. Wearing a mask is a very efficient way to protect others if you are carrying the virus (even if you don’t know that you are infected). In addition, if someone else’s fluid droplets happen to land on your mask, many of them will not pass through. This gives the wearer some additional protection, too. But, the main reason to wear a mask is to PROTECT OTHERS. Even if you don’t care about yourself, wear your mask to protect your neighbors, co-workers and friends!

A mask is certainly not 100% protective. However, it appears that the severity of Covid-19 infection is at least partially “dose-dependent.” In other words, the more virus particles that enter your body, the sicker you are likely to become. Why not decrease that volume if you can? “What have you got to lose?!”

“But doesn’t a requirement or a request to wear a mask violate my constitutional rights?” You’re also not allowed to go into the grocery store if you are not wearing pants. You can’t yell “fire” in the Produce Department. You’re not allowed to urinate on the floor in the Frozen Food Section. Do you object to those restrictions? Rules, established for the common good, are component of a civilized society.

“But aren’t masks uncomfortable?” Some would say that underwear or shoes can be uncomfortable, but we still wear them. (Actually, being on a ventilator is pretty darned uncomfortable, too!) Are masks really so bad that you can’t tolerate them, even if they will help keep others healthy?

“But won’t people think I’m a snowflake or a wimp if I wear a mask?” I hope you have enough self-confidence to overcome that.

“But won’t I look stupid if I wear a mask?” I’ve decided not to dignify that question with an answer!! 📷

:)

“But I never get sick; I’m not worried.” Well, then, wear a mask for the sake of the rest of us who are not so perfect!
There is good evidence that masks make a real difference in diminishing the transmission of Covid-19. Please, for the sake of others (and for the sake of yourself), wear your mask when in public. It won’t kill you!

P.S. - And, by the way, please be sure that BOTH your nose and mouth are covered!
Recommendations around mask usage are confusing. The science isn't. Evidence shows that masks are extremely effective to slow the coronavirus and may be the best tool available right now to fight it.”
Thank you, Sam Laucks!!

Is there a way to "Like" something twice? :worship:

The governor is the one who started opening everything back up. The governor also takes issue when the cities undermine his authority. I don’t know if the cities have authority to shut down businesses or recreation.
The governor needs to get everything back under control and if that means shutting the state back down, he needs to do it.

I am so sorry. Horrible news. We are rooting for you and your brother. 💗

A similar thing happened to my brother 2 years ago and we were very scared. He needed a bag but was fortunate to reroute back 8 months later after everything healed. Unfortunately it wasn't caught initially, they told him it was mild digestive issues. Only after he collapsed was it taken seriously.

At the start of this pandemic, my mother was in the hospital with the flu and during the pandemic my dad has been in the hospital twice for strokes. The first time, he had to have hip surgery because of a fall. Because of this, I've witnessed how things have changed at our local hospitals and I've been impressed with how well they've adapted. During my mom's stay, I was the only one allowed in the hospital to see her and I had to wear a mask that the hospital provided. During my dad's stays, I wasn't allowed in at all but the hospital staff did a wonderful job of keeping me informed. Because I have medical power of attorney (my mom has it too but wasn't emotionally able to make decisions) I had to make the decisions without even seeing how my dad was doing or physically meeting the care team. The scariest part was having to give verbal DNR consent to the anesthesiologist right before his surgery.

My biggest piece of advice is to make sure you have your will updated and your DNR and other medical/legal papers available in PDF form so that if you have to go suddenly to the hospital, they can be sent there. I also, recommend you have the same for your other close family members. If you are the person who is supposed to make medical decisions for someone other than a spouse or minor child, make sure you have a medical power of attorney so that you can quickly step in. You also need to have a form giving you HIPAA rights so that the hospital can share medical info with you.
