Texas

We have friends who invited 60 people over to their house for the 4th of July. Sigh. I'm beginning to think that this country is doing so much wrong that we're headed toward experimenting with whether or not this virus can be defeated with herd immunity alone. 80% of the country infected, huge numbers left with long term effects, ridiculous number of people dead, hospitals overwhelmed and having to turn patients away? Maybe that will "control" the pandemic here. Absent a national organized response and the vast majority of citizens willing to follow public health guidelines. what other choice do we have?

I received an email this morning that states "with a heavy heart" they've cancelled the 2020 State Fair of Texas.

This resonates with me as mid Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo 2020 they just closed.the.rodeo. And the Houston rodeo is no small thing to just "close".

Things are getting worse in Texas as the days go by and .... the governor is failing to act accordingly for the people who live in the state.

I hope all of you who are also living in Texas are well. We're going to get through this. 🤠

The State Fair, The Rodeo, ACL Festival, SXSW all the biggies gone for 2020.

Just read our county paper at lunch where the local judge was quoted as saying he didn't believe in the mask ordinance and that our police officers have more important things to do than enforce it, but "we should all follow orders as given."

So, talking out of both sides of his mouth. Leaves lots of room for interpretation to suit your beliefs and then justify your actions.

And that's a huge economy blow, we're struggling in Nashville with all the loss of our big events since March.
ACL Fest is huge for Austin. It's going to hurt in so many areas. Same as SWSW.

My husband went to Nashville last fall for work and loved it so much. We had planned to visit this summer. :(

Sad but I unfortunately agree. We are heading in a terrible direction and it’s terrifying. Our economy does need to open, but seeing the number of people brushing this off and still not taking it seriously just blows my mind. It is infuriating for those of us who care, yet are being told we’re just being controlled by our government by thinking we should wear masks. I still only plan to go out for work and for necessities for as long as possible, even if it is boring. The even more unfortunate part is now one of those necessities is taking my car in for repairs after I was rear-ended yesterday. :guilty:

We lost SEC, CMA Fest, Bonaroo, hockey, 4th of July and I don't know what else we're going to lose at this rate. We were struggling before Covid in Nashville because three weeks prior we had been hit by deadly tornadoes.

Hopefully next summer you guys can! I recommend the fall though, the weather is much better.

Texas burst through the gate and never looked back. People used to wear masks in our neighborhood. Now, not a one. It's nuts.
My area is the same. Not in Texas, I live in PA, but the whole mask wearing thing has become very polarized and political. I live in an upscale but still mostly rural community which is largely conservative and NOBODY wears masks anymore. I posted yesterday about my recent visit to my dentist--no one was wearing masks. Not him or his assistant or his wife, not anyone in the waiting room. I wore mine and felt very awkward, and I was asked to take it off as soon as I sat down in the chair. I don't understand why no one will wear masks when our cases are spiking, every day our local news is reporting that we are hitting new records for cases. I'm so disappointed in my community.

Ahh, I see. So, according to that judge, half of the laws can be ignored or thrown out since there’s more important things the police have to do.

If local and state leaders in the harder hit places still don’t understand the situation, I can only assume that they will take the virus seriously when they’re personally affected by it.

That's insane. I can't believe they won't require masks at the very least in all medical and dental settings. I have to say everyone was very well masked up at my dentist appointment today.

On that note, we had something similar here a few months ago where our sheriff said he wouldn't enforce the SIP any longer. Regardless of whether one agreed with him or not on the validity of our SIP, the precedent it set was very scary - that he could unilaterally decide what orders/laws he felt were worth enforcing. He and the health director finally came to an agreement, but it was a tense week.
