Nico is playing soccer again this year too.

Gantor - that is crazy!!! Can you coach 18 kids? Wow..you really are an amazing dad.

Gigantor, you are going to be the robot divided by 2.......I agree, just remember it's for the kids.....say that 10 times and you will begin to believe it :goodvibes I'm sure you will get some parents to help out.

Deena, how are you this morning? :grouphug:

Have fun mac at orientation......

Got some work to do, so see ya later

WOO HOO ..........
coffee is here !!
i think i am in love......

gigantor, you are a super kewl robot.
what a great man you are to jump in and be in charge for the soccer guys.
it's the right thing to do and we are proud of you.

i see tony did not come back to my reply of us being in living color this morning.

yes mic, do some work
yes sweets, do not do some work.

it's time for roll call and its monday.

Good Morning everybody. Well Mic at least Football season is starting and who knows maybe the Bruins will be good this year ( I know the Red Sox are the only Boston Team you follow)

morning, rolled outof bed before the wake up call today - beating my computer...it "ate" some photos:guilty: can anyone recommend one of them-there photo sites to park my pics where I can retreive them later...preferably for free(it's for me:banana: ). I am so computer clueless.

ocm - funny "sign of peace" story. I don't consider myself a germaphobe but, get creeped out when someone around me starts sneezing & coughing (into their right hand), should carry antibacterial lotion.;)

mic - are you a scrap booker? I've got a few sets, haven't opened them yet. I'm lucky if i print out any pics (before I accidently delete them LOL), double points if I throw them in an album.

mac - off to the liquor store, what's on the list? I hear mimosas are greaaat in the a.m. or bloody mary.

ed - :cool1: AK sounds great, it's on our list.

gigantor - coach in a can:) , good luck, bring icepacks.

Im still sad. I did okay yesterday til it was time for me to leave then I started crying when I was hugging him bye. Poor Matthew was so sad too. We didnt speak a word on the way home, we couldnt. You know our house is full of people now with all of us but there was a long time that it was just the 3 of us. Im really proud of Michael and Matthew for being such great kids and staying out of trouble.

ocm, think this means, go to church more............. :rotfl2:

julie was so cute in what she said,
if you go back more, she will catch on to the services

Maybe if I go back more often she won't shout out during the middle of the adoration.."Mommy the bells..the bells!! Did you hear the bells."

Good morning everyone. I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend. Now starts another busy week. My little guy is signed up for soccer and I get a call on Saturday that there is no coach. 18 kids in all are signed up (enough for 2 teams). So......try and guess who has a bag full of soccer balls in his minivan? I just hope I can get some of the parents involved quickly. As it stands right now, I will be practicing the whole team together and then splitting them up on Saturdays for 2 separate games. I just have to keep reminding myself "it's for the kids".

Anyway, I hope you all have a great week.

I got the same call a couple weeks ago -- we can be suckers together. I coached DS' team the last couple years but was hoping to get a year off, but they were two coaches short, so I said I'd do it again.

Fortunately our teams are only 8 or 9 kids big. We still divide them up into teams of 4 or 5 to play, though and play 2 mini games of 4 or 4 or 5 on 5. It's easier at their age than one big game of 8 on 8. :)

Suckers together it is. I coach baseball and basketball and was hoping to have this fall off but someone has other plans for me I guess. Bob, I will be asking you for some tips as I am a soccer newbie. I understand the general rules and I know how to manage the 6-8 year olds. I've been doing some online searching for fun drills and such so any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Here's some basic drills that our commissioner sent to new coaches at the beginning of this year. I've used a number of them and they are very popular...

Foot skill ideas (you need everyone to have their own ball for most of these):

• Start with something easy. Have them put one foot on the ball and one on the ground. Then have them switch, hopping back and forth from left foot to right. Let them go as fast as they want. This drill and the next one are a great warm-up.

• Have them pass the ball back and forth between their feet. Again, let them go at whatever pace works best.

• Red light, green light – Line all the kids up at one end of the field, each with a ball, spaced a few feet apart. When you say green light they start dribbling toward the other end. When you say red light they stop. Add a yellow light or “reverse” for even more fun.

• The snake line (or the train) – Have the kids line up single file and give the first player the ball. Tell them they can dribble wherever they want on their field on the rest of the team will follow. After 30-45 seconds, they give the ball to the next player in line and go to the end. Keep it going until every player has a chance to dribble. Kids love this for some reason.

• Relay races – Use your imagination. Instead of dribbling around cones, have them dribble around their older brothers/sisters. Or dribbling through their legs. Or crawling through their legs.

Set up a box using cones, about 20 feet long and 15 feet wide. This box has many uses, such as:

• Crab soccer – Put two players (or use the older brothers/sisters again) in the box as crabs. They need to be in crab walk position. Everyone else gets a ball and spreads out at one end of the box. When you say ‘Go’ they try to dribble to the other end without going outside the box or having one of the crabs kick their ball out of the box. Everyone that’s knocked out becomes a crab for the next run. Keep going back and forth until everyone is knocked out.

• Tag – Everyone has a ball but the tagger. They have to dribble inside the box while the tagger chases them down. If you want to make it harder for the tagger, play Freeze Tag. Players who are tagged are frozen. They can be unfrozen if another player tags them (or dribbles through their legs or any other crazy idea you have). The tagger is done when everyone is frozen. Or have the tagger try to kick all the other balls out of the box (this game has many names).

• Dribble and shoot – Give every player a number, say, their uniform number. Every player gets a ball and dribbles in the box. When you call out a number that player passes you the ball, you pass it back to them, and they shoot. If you have an assistant you can both call out numbers, one at each end, using two goals. It sounds complex but four year olds can do this.

• Here’s a guaranteed winner with the kids. Give each player a ball. Have them dribble the ball in the box. Every 20 seconds or so, tell them to stop and put a body part on the ball. See how many know their left foot from their right. The kids really have fun when you ask them to put their stomach, nose, or chin on the ball. But for some reason the all-time favorite is the ear. You’d be surprised how many can hear the ocean!

The goal of all of the above games is to get the kids to control the ball. Change speed, change direction, start and stop.

Passing and shooting:

• Surprisingly, passing back and forth isn’t a bad idea. Just don’t do it for more than a couple minutes. The players should use the big flat surface on the inside of the foot. It’s hard for young kids to turn that foot to trap and kick so don’t be discouraged when they struggle.

• The Super “W” – Have the kids line up in a “W” formation. Put one player about 15 feet from the goal and zigzag the rest toward the opposite goal. Put all the balls at the far end. Have the players work the ball from the farthest player to the closest, back and forth down the field. The player closest to the goal shoots. Encourage them to track down missed shots and keep working until it’s in the net. Keep the balls coming until they’re all in the goal.

• Pass and shoot – The easiest and most popular drill ever. Use your assistant coach and two goals to keep the lines short. The player will pass you a ball, you pass it back, and they shoot. Again, if they miss encourage them to keep shooting until the ball is in the goal. Liven it up by having them dribble around a cone first before they pass it to you.

The idea behind these drills is simple passing and persistent shooting. Don’t stop until the ball is in the goal.

Can I be a sucker too? Im not a coach but Im the team mom of Evans football team. I have been busy making sch for chains, monitoring, concession and we still need an announcer for our games. I cant get anyone to volunteer
Ohhh and one mom was whining about the shorts her son got (they are just flaggers so they wear shorts). Get this his shorts fit him now but she is concerned about later on when she is going to use them for play shorts :confused3 Uh, its only my job to make sure his shorts fit him for the season, not for the next year

She's worried that she won't get further use out of them?? :sad2:  :sad2:

It's all the organizing cr@p that I hate (like the scheduling stuff, the phone calls, etc.) I don't mind the coaching part, I just wish I could find someone to do all the admin stuff. :rolleyes1

Nope, no such luck. I wouldn't only have a team mom if I could talk DW into doing it, and that's not happened so far. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: It's not as bad with soccer than I imagine it would be for football. We only play for 7 or 8 weeks and I only have 9 kids on the team, including my son. Concessions and all that is taken care of by the league itself, not the teams.

Morning again.........

Deena :grouphug: it will get better, believe me........glad it went well though and just think, he'll be back home for fall break and probably a weekend here and there......he is not gone forever, just spreading those wings

Deena, I was president of Babe Ruth for years and also was concession coordinator.........get a mom from each team that reports to you. I can't tell you how you how important it is to let them know that YOU are in charge overall and things will be done your way! If you don't, if won't run smooth. Yep, you will get the kooks like that mom with the shorts, believe me on this one too. Every year it is a set of parents trying to tell you how to do your job...my reply always was......you think you can do it better, here, be my guest...that usually got them to back down. I could tell you some tales though of stuff that would curl your straight hair :teeth: When you think you've heard it all, you get another set of parents to drive ya nuts! Every spring had it's share of bumps, but we kept it running smoothly. It takes effort and a lot of your time, but as Gigantor said, its for the kids.

Good luck Gigantor...looks like Bob posted some good info for you to make use of. You've done sports before though, so you know what I'm talking about above........

KS, I store photos at Shutterfly.......you can order prints and stuff from them too. I've used them for years and been happy. Not sure who Deena uses, but I also have friends who use Snapfish. I just find Shutterfly easy for me to use, you can edit and add borders and stuff to your photo's, so I stick with it.

Yes Ed, I'm not into the other Boston sports/teams........so I'm pretty upset at this bunch right now...... :furious: but you are correct, there is next year

Mac, after you make your trip to the liquer store, fix me up....I could use it this morning. :surfweb:

Oh yeah I know. Back when matthew played football I was Vice president of our club. Our president quit because we had to coaches who wouldnt follow the rules and she had no back up. We already had 1 VP when I signed up so he moved to president but he didnt do crap. I did everything from going to the league meetings to staying at the field all day on game day and showing up early for rain out games. During this time I was also Matthews team mom AND pregnant with Connor. I was sicker than a dog during that pg. I threw up all 9 months. It wasnt uncommon to stop and barf on my way to the field and then run off the field to go barf again

We're organized in our area youth sports, they all have boards (w/pres. etc. & committees) that people fight to serve on LOL.

During sign-ups ALL parents must write an additional check that is returned once they show up for & actively participate in whatever task(s) they've signed up for...officiating, running the sticks, announcing, raffle tix selling, concession stand & even the coveted orange slice parent.;)

If they don't, the league cashes their check.

Always ran into the same stuff w/PTA. The parents that never bothered to join or come to even 1 meeting were p.o'd when they weren't considered for party/field trip chaperones.:confused3
will check out both pic sites, thanx.

hearing all about being a coach and the responsiblilities that go with it, make all my issues and home problems seem like a piece of cake.
