Terrible Things Our Parents Made Us Wear

Where to even start with this.....
1. scarfs on my head. ugly triangle things that tied under my chin every time it was slightly windy out cuz I could get an ear infection from the wind.
2. moon boots
3. winter hats...hand knit (not by her but from someone at a craft fair) again, tied under my chin, but had a braid of pink white and purple hanging down in the back so that people would grab the braid from behind and pull on it.

I grew up in the '60's. Had the short, short pixie cut with short, short bangs.
How did I forget my short cut to the top of the forehead bangs! I hated having bangs that short.

Okay mine is a combination of things. First I had the awful tight perm going, then I was made to wear a lot of wrap around skirts (I hated pants) that my grandmother would sew out of whatever fabric she could find. I remember one that was lime green with bubble gum pink hippos on it :(

On the other hand though, I wore some pretty embarrassing things on my own as I got older. Like MC Hammer pants, fake leather pants with a billion zippers on them (just had to wear them like Michael Jackson) and those horrible balloon skirts.

But my mom also had a sewing machine. Be afraid. Be very afraid!

She also made a couple of long dresses that looked like maternity dresses. (Ever seen a 2nd grader in a floor length, pink floral print maternity dress?)QUOTE]

:rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2: you owe me a monitor!!

I had the oreo necklace too!

I was a walking fashion nightmare as a child. First of all, my mother used to buy me clothes at a thift shop where you paid by the weight rather than the item. That lead to some very....interesting outfits. I have a picture of me wearing green plaid bell bottoms, and a baseball shirt that says "Girls are Special People Too!" on it in big letters. Argh.

Garanimals! The horror. And I will not discuss how proud I was of my purple courdoroy knickers, to be worn with white socks pulled up over the knee, and a jaunty bus driver's cap.

The less said about my forced permanents, the better. I was an irish girl with an afro.

That was so funny - thanks for the giggle! And for the record - I dont think you look THAT bad! :sunny:

Glad to have made your day! :teeth:

And hey, nothing says fashion more than dark kneesocks and sandles at WDW! :rotfl:

She made me some purple (like grape juice color) corduroy gauchos. She also made a couple of long dresses that looked like maternity dresses. (Ever seen a 2nd grader in a floor length, pink floral print maternity dress?)

The all time winner has to be my "people pants". They were a bright yellow background, printed with purple and white scenes of people at the beach. I think I wore those when I was about 4. Yuck!

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
That is just too funny...I am lauging out loud. People pants. Maternity dress. You poor thing.

I remember Tuff Skins and Garanimals...also all the Brady Bunch vertical stripes...the 70s were an ugly decade...

Did anyone else have the Mork from Ork RAINBOW suspenders??? :thumbsup2

They looked best if you were at the roller rink, of course.

ANd knickers with the newsboy hat...I had a pair of knickers that I wore for every special occasion. I thought they were so cool.

The scary thing is, are our kids going to think the same thing??!!

I can't really think of anything awful that my mom made me wear that I didn't like at the time.

I can, however, think of some things I wore that I can't believe she LET me wear (80s fashions, anyone? :crazy2: )

I had the Ork suspenders! I also had a set with teddy bears on them. Total fashion geek, checking in!

I was in 4th gr in 1970, it was the first yr they allowed the girls to wear pants. It started out as "cold weather only" but noone went back to dresses. It took a month and a note from the teacher to convince my mother that I was the only child in a skirt every day! Then she refused to believe the other kids were in jeans. She insisted on stretch pants and polyester pants suits. Finally at the end of 6th gr my best friend ended up in the hospital and her mom had to go collect her school work for her. Her mom, also a member of the "embarass your children daily" club, saw what was really being worn in the classrms and reported back to my mother. I finally got to wear jeans to school right before it let out for the summer. Then she decided that plain jeans were fine for the boys but not the girls. I have no idea where she managed to find jeans with rhinestones, spangles, and metal stars that fit a 12 yr old.

You mom could have been the creator of the "bedazzler" :hyper:

The Dorothy Hamill hair cut - blech!

I'll neve forget this horrendous outfit my mother made me wear to our district spelling bee. It was a long cotton skirt with pleats, white with black polka dots. The "matching" blazer was black with white polka dots. It had a shell underneat that had stripes. It was hideous, and I was so embarrassed to wear it! I'll have to find a pic of it - it was THAT bad! To this day I hate anything with polka dots on it!

I remember having pant/shirt sets that were just horrid. They were plaid pants with little dogs on them. And they had suspenders. Then they had white shirts with ruffles and dogs on them. Oh, and they came with matching hair clips.

 I am almost certain I had this exact outfit...

I was a young teen in the early 70's. Remember bell bottoms, and midi (middriff) shirts? Well, one of my cousins sent me a CD for Christmas last year with pictures on it of my family when we were all small. Her dad had passed away and she went through all his old slides and put this together for all of us. I was loving it until....there I am at Nana's house on Easter (13 years old) wearing my purple mini skirt with vertical stripes of white elephants, purple vinyl belt with white plastic elephant shaped buckle and white shirt with "puckers" all over it. Oh yes and don't miss the purple tights! My sister had a similar outfit in blue. It was my favourite outfit! The shirt showed off my non-existent (at that time curves). You should have heard my teen daughters 16 and 18 laughing at that outfit. I thought I was gorgeous. Oh my!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

The only horrible thing I remember is the way my grandmother always cut our bangs crooked. I lved the clothes I wore as a kid, wish I still had a lot of them so my kids could wear them! I love looking at old pictures! My grandmother made a lot of clothes and most of the rest of my clothes were hand-me-downs from whoever gave them to us. (I had a lot of girl cousins and a big sister). Went through all the fads (late 70's,80's, and 90's growing up) had perms, wore scrunch socks and sky-high bangs. Wore lots of leggings and scrunchies in the hair. had quite a few belts, huge wones and had my favorite jean jacket. My hair was always lept shoulder length until I was about 11. I do not regret any of the fashions that I wore or was made to wear. It brings back a lot of memories to see those outfits and I wish my Grammy were still around to cut my kids hair crooked!

You should see the stuff my DD wears! None of it is plain jane, the outfit she has on today is cords with 3 or 4 colors layered down the legs with big flowers around the waist and a multi-color striped top with flower near the neckline. I just bought her some vertical striped skirts with tops just as crazy and hats to match (it is what she loves). A lot of her clothes are carzy like she is! I hope she looks back at her pictures and realizes how great those times were.

Homemade clothes made from the old kitchen curtains!!!

RickinNYC that's so funny!!!!!! My ex brother-in-law used to wear leisure suits, I remember his powder blue one and his denim one. I don't think he ever showed up in jeans to pick my sister up for their dates, well at least not for the first year anyway. Not long ago, my mother told me when he would show up to the house in his leisure suits she thought there was something wrong with him :rotfl2: ! She said she couldn't understand why he didn't wear jeans "like normal kids" lol!
