Terrible Things Our Parents Made Us Wear

Because this thread is so much fun (and in honor of my shiny new tag - thanks Tag Fairy! :teeth: ) I have another fashion disaster to report.

In 1978 my mom bought me some white twill overalls. They came with a sheet of red iron-on letters, and she wrote my nickname vertically down one leg. :scared1: Mom also bought a pair for my cousin because we are about the same age and our moms liked to dress us matching sometimes. But my cousin is bigger. So I got the joy of the white overalls not once but TWICE when my cousin's came back in a hand-me-down box! I can't remember now if her mom put her name on the leg or not. I either wore them with her name on them or my mom scraped off the letters. :confused3

Wow, reading this thread makes me feel very lucky...my mom never made me wear anything embarassing...I have one cool mom :thumbsup2

Did anyone else have the Mork from Ork RAINBOW suspenders??? :thumbsup2

My DS33 had those when he was about 8 or so, and he LOVED them. Held his pants up too, he was so skinny... :lmao: :lmao:

(so I guess I am one of 'those moms'.)

I always had my cousin's clothes, after she was tired of them.....

I also remember putting cardboard in my shoes when they started to wear out. Sneakers were only for gym class, and the summer. Shoes were to be worn at all other times.

Yeesh. Mom made me wear this ugly powder blue leisure suit type thing that had white stitching. Adding a pair of white shoes and flowered shirt.

Ah, the 70's.

Wait. maybe that's why..... never mind.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
You are TOOOOOO funny!!!

:rotfl2: This is too much!!! I think I grew up with all of you!
On every special occasion my mom would roll my hair in plastic curlers.
I looked like I had major roles in every horror film ever made. Even worse, my mom has pictures. Oh, and let me not forget the school-doo. You know the one. Bangs pulled straight back on top of your head with a huge plastic bright colored hairclip. LOL... :woohoo:

This thread is cracking me up :lmao: :lmao:

Let's see....

Drothy Hammil haircut (I have an awful colick in the front of my head so you can imagine how lovely that was sticking up)

green, black, and blue checked bell bottom god awful itchy polyester pants (come to think of it I had several nasty colored checked bell bottom, god awful, itchy polyester pair of pants. My Dgrandpa used to call me checkers because of them  )

Those cheap knock offs of the nike shoes everyone else had

Did I mention the Dorthy haircut with the stupid colick sticking up, sometimes she would add a barette to it, again lovely

I also got the lovely homemade clothes. I used to run and hide when the sewing machine came out so she couldn't measure me :lmao: Boy did that make her mad!!

I was in the forth grade when DM was taking a flower arranging class, she would make me these dorkey crosages (sp?) She would make me wear them to school. Little did she know the minute I left her sight off it went and into the pocket I shoved it :rolleyes1

Oh the 70's, the good old days

But it didn't get any better in the 80's.

Anyone say parachute pants :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Frizzy poofy permed big hair :rotfl2:

"Fashion jeans" in each color they had at the Sears - Husky section, of course. Earthtones - don't you miss them?!?

When I was in 1st grade, I remember sporting some brown overalls that had the "Hee Haw" donkey all over them. I even wore them in my school pictures! :sad2:

I also had the worst hairdo up until about 2nd grade. My hair was always thick and my mom would put it in two pig tails, with rubber bands at the top, middle, and bottom. The result would be these bizarre puffs. I looked like a poodle. It's a wonder that I still speak to that woman.

You mean there were more than one pair of those gawd-awful things in existence? I thought I had a Hee-Haw original. :lmao: At least we can laugh about it now, right?

This thread is killing me... :rotfl2: ....and causing some serious flashbacks!!

I am another survivor of one of those lovely mid-70's pixie haircuts. My mother took me to my grandmother's friend to have all my (I thought) beautiful long curly hair cut off and then was mad at me when I wasn't polite afterwards and wouldn't thank her. All I could do was cry that I hated it.

I am also a victim of (dum dum dum) THE SEWING MACHINE. One Christmas when I was about 10, my sister and I were the recipients of matching polyester jumpsuits with the big collar and bell bottoms. Mine was a weird sort of maroon color and my sister's was a dark green (hey, it WAS Christmas). To top off these lovely ensembles, my mother would pull the top of our hair back to make a little pony tail and tie it with red and green yarn twined together. You want to talk festive--well, it doesn't get much better than that!

I also got a homemade First Communion Dress like an Hersey did and didn't like mine either because everyone else had a beautiful store bought one. My mother said I wasn't a frilly type so I didn't want that kind of dress. Of course, she never asked me!!

I must say it is nice to see that I wasn't the only one who dreaded what I had to wear some days. I was raised by my grandparents but my grandma was avery chic one nothing but "nice stuff for her doll baby" sooooooooo if that tells you anything about my childhood ...it was very interesting.

I had to sleep in pink sponge rollers every 3rd night in grade school and the other kids would chase me around the play ground pulling my curls going "BOING BOING BOING" very tramatic on a kid.

When I was in high school I wasn't allowed to leave the house with out full make up or my hair hot rolled.

this is just the tip of the ice berg

OMG DSis had those too! They were hideous but of course I never told her so. I let her leave the house like that so people would make fun of her :lmao:

I had to check your profile and make sure you weren't my older sister. She still teases me about my Hee Haw duds. :teeth:

Anyone remember those floor length granny dresses with the bib fronts and tied bows in back. Ewwww....

Well, I just have to join this club...

My mother sewed, as well. There is a divine picture of me floating around...I am in Kindergarten. Mother made my outfit. Red and white checkered polyester pants and jacket, white blouse, and one honkin' ginormous red bow right below my chin. And yes, I do have the "deer-in-the headlights" look on my face to match! What a treat.

Shortly thereafter I was the recipient of the "Dorothy Hammill". A red-letter day, to be sure.

But, my all time favorites were the lovely culottes. In every color! Mother loved them and so, therefore, I must love them too. Naturally to be worn with knee socks and earth shoes......

no wonder i have no fashion sense.

ETA....if you miss your culottes...check out this website...and this is not intended to be disrespectful in any manner....

brought back a memory or too..... :smooth:

This thread is hysterical!! We went to WDW in 1974 and my mom wanted to save some money so she made our outfits for vacation. She found fabric that 'looked' like patchwork denim but it was polyester! :sad2:

Does anyone remember the shorts sets of solid color shorts and a matching color with white stripes tank top? Polyester of course and stretchy. The stretchy part is going to be important in a minute ;)

Well she decided to make them herself...only when I put them on once we got to Fort Wilderness I found out that she cut them wrong and instead of the stretch going from side to side, it went from top to bottom :rolleyes2

I was stick thin ( then) and could barely keep them up.

Then there was the Christmas she made me, my sister and herself matching floor length skirts of red, white and blue plaid wool. With it she wore a red sweater, I wore a blue sweater and my sister wore a white sweater. We looked sooo cute

Oh I also got the Dorothy Hamill haircut, in some woman's basement...who had never heard of Dorothy Hamill.

I came out looking more like Shirley from Laverne and Shirley!! :rotfl:

I am laughing so hard at this thread...:lmao:

Do you remember the ribbons for hair? The kind that were fuzzy and long and came in every color known to man?

I had them, wore them in my pig tails and the were so long even after being tied they hung to my shoulder blades!

I looked like a character gone bad from Different Strokes or Facts of Life or What's happening!

You know what I mean the rainbow suspenders and socks-then to top it off with the ribbons...Plus I was red headed! "Carrot top"
You would think I would have a complex!:tilt:
But I don't!
