Terrible Things Our Parents Made Us Wear

Saddle shoes, cotton tights, and my mom made almost all my clothes. Hers matched mine and my dad's shirt matched ours! I remember a lot of brown.

Yes, I remember the Quiana (sp?) shirts. Sad to say I thought they were fantastic at the time. I remember that my girlfriend's mother taught us to sew. We made long granny dresses with the bib front and tied in back. We also made apple patterned pants that were floods. Wore those too. I also had to wear Sear's brand undershirts...the kind with the little lace trim with the tiny pink bow in the center. Ewww..... Does anyone remember the jewelry in the late 70's? I remember a fad once of these pieces of fruit that had a bite out of them. Yes, I had and wore an apple core necklace. I was too cool for words.

I dont have one particular thing my mother made me wear that I hated. I had many many things that I hated. My mother is always trying to keep up with the Jones' and only likes trendy things. So no matter what was in style, she got it for me. No matter if I looked good in it or not. I dreaded when August came around and we had to go shopping for school clothes.

I do know of one thing my mother bought for my brother that to this day still brings him to tears. She made him wear brown cordouroy (sp?) pants. When he was young, my brother was a "hefty" sized child. Poor thing. Those suckers scarred him for life.

When I was in first and second grade our school wouldn't let girls wear pants, so my mother, on the very cold days, would make me wear pants UNDER MY DRESS. There I would be with my little cotton dress and these big thick knit pants sticking out from under it. Also, she made me wear white anklets long after the cooler girls were wearing "nylons".

Me too! LOL

I had bangs as a kid. I hated having them trimmed, with the scissors right near my eyes like that! Yikes! As soon as I got old enough to do my own hair, I got rid of the bangs and never had them again.

In the 70's I remember Ditto's! Had a pair in all different colors with different seams.

Trash Bags! :rotfl: My mother would give us bags to wear too! Even worse is that I handed one to my daughter once when it was pouring rain out :teeth: ! She looked at me like I had ten heads.

Now the fashions in the 60's and 70's were pretty bad so I can't blame my mom. I can blame my dad for this one though. I had blisters on the heals of my feet from a pair of shoes. At the time my father was into reading Mother Earth news and stuff like that. He read that if you put potato skins on blisters it would heal them. So he made me wear potato skins, well wrapped in gauze to hold them in place for a couple of days. I wound up with the worst infection! Try explaining the potato skin method to the Dr lol!

At least we've lived to laugh about all these things :rotfl2: .

I had the pear necklace like that! I thought they were so cool. Looking back, they really were kind of stupid.

I also had a granny dress in a small red print with a big lace bib front and a huge ruffle at the bottom. Absolutely hideous!

Stinking Snow Pants.... the whole snow suit, thingee... :crazy2:

I hated those dang things. I couldnt walk! God forbid I fell over, I couldnt get back up.

And if you wore them to school, you were required to wear them during recess too. So you'd have to get these wretched things on and off several times during the day.

I took a whole 'nother route with my kids - I dont even make up zip their coats. :teeth:

ETA: I remembered also - I had ponytails so tight, I couldnt move my head. This is probably the root-cause of my current headaches issues. I looked Asian in half my school pictures.

That was so funny - thanks for the giggle! And for the record - I dont think you look THAT bad! :sunny:

Purple corduroy knickers back in the late 70s/early 80s :scared:

Yeesh. Mom made me wear this ugly powder blue leisure suit type thing that had white stitching. Adding a pair of white shoes and flowered shirt.

Ah, the 70's.

Wait. maybe that's why..... never mind.

For those of you that remember Flip Wilson- In 4th grade, I wore a pair of pants that had in small print, "The Devil Made Me Do It!" :thumbsup2

I also had a pair of blue tinted sunglasses that were hexagon shaped. They went well with my Page Boy hair cut.

This thread is cracking me up. I grew up in the late 60's-70's. My father was super cheap about clothes and there were four of us. I had a pixie haircut and home perms done by friends of my mother. I can truly tell you, I never had a school picture where my hair was even, or normal. It was always sticking up looking awful.
There was a picture where I have on red white and blue plaid pants, a smiley face sweatshirt and an awful fur coat. It is so bad. My mother went thru huge phases of making our own clothes. My sisters and I would get matching little house style dresses. And crocheting meant lots of ponchos.
In the winter my father had this huge closet full of ugly pull on rubber boots, some had patches on them. We were supposed to go thru them and find a pair that fit. My girlfriends all had cool zipper up boots with little heels that they would slide around in. I hated my boots. Had green jeans.
This went on even in jr and sr high. My father would only buy us jeans from k-mart or sears brand. All my gf's were wearing levis, and levi cords that came in cool colors. Or before that they were wearing designer jeans like calvin kleins. I got a job as soon as I was able to buy my own clothes.
Because of that I always bought my kids clothes they liked

Red rubbers- the kind that you pulled on over your shoes! I was so jealous of the girls who wore regular rain boots and carried their shoes in fancy little shoe bags.

Overall my mom let me choose my own clothes, so I only have myself to blame for the bright orange pantsuit or the yellow & green plaid pants :crazy2: !

Once she made my sister and I matching "midi-skirts" that looked like tableclothes, with that bric-brac trim around the bottom.

Count me in for the pixie haircut. I was only in 2nd grade so I didn't know any better. And homecut bangs, horrible. If I could only scan pictures. I was a walking fashion tragedy.

I remember having pant/shirt sets that were just horrid. They were plaid pants with little dogs on them. And they had suspenders. Then they had white shirts with ruffles and dogs on them. Oh, and they came with matching hair clips. :crazy2: My mom bought me and my brother bright yellow rain coats. Everyone else had normal looking rain coats and me and my brother had matching yellow rubber raincoats with little ducks on the inside. I dreaded the springtime. She also wouldn't buy me jeans when I was younger. So I always had stretchy pants, in every color and pattern. Wonder why I refuse to wear anything other than jeans now. But oddly enough now she has a great sense of style and likes to buy me brand name clothes! I think she got wiser as she got older. (But wait, now she is almost 50 and wants a tattoo! :scared: I love her but she is a strange lady.)

Another pixie cut survivor. I hated when people thought I was a boy because of it. Oh how I longed for long hair with ribbons and bows! Even worse was when I started to "sprout" early. Rather than buy new clothes, my mother gave me her old ones. Nothing is more ridiculous than a 10 year old in her mother's early 70's "fashions"

I can't believe that others remember these necklaces! I remember the oreo one!!
:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I remember my mom MAKING me wear saddle shoes. I think they were black and white. She also made me wear colored tights with plaid pleated skirts!! What was she thinking??? I couldn't get my 11DD to wear tights and skirts if I paid her $100. Nor would I want to torture her like that!
