NOTE: The actual trip report begins on page 3, post 37. I have links to the cruise photos (nearly 500) and food (more than 100) in my signature. Enjoy!

This afternoon when our pizza was delivered, an interesting thing ended up on the table with all of the receipts... it was a parchment scroll, rolled up, with a piece of hard candy attached. Naturally, my six-year-old daughter was interested. "Can I open it?" she asked. "Sure," I replied casually, opening the pizza box.

After a moment's work, she unrolled the paper and read:

It’s New Year
Two-Thousand Eight.
Hope your year is
Extra great!
You worked hard
Last year, we know.
But you said you
Longed to go
On a trip to
Somewhere neat.
Soon your wish
Will be complete!
In ten days
We’ll go away.
“Where,” you wonder,
“Will we stay?”
That’s the secret
You must learn.
Each day’s clue
You’ll have to turn
Over in your mind,
You see,
‘Till you solve
The mystery.

Before we go any further, let me catch you up...

THE PLAYERS:
Laura – me, 35.
Ken – my husband, 44.
Daphne – our daughter, 6. Also known as (AKA) “D.”

Sarah – my sister, 33. AKA “Sister” (to me) or “Aunt Sister” (to Daphne).
Ken – Sister’s husband, my brother-in-law, 34. AKA “KWBiii.”
Hannah – Sister’s eldest, my niece, 8.
Mackenzie – Sister’s middle, my niece, 6.
Taran – Sister’s youngest, my nephew, 4. AKA “TJ.”

Jim – my dad, 63. AKA “Dad” or “Pappy.” Or “Moneybags.”
Donna – my mom, 62. AKA “Mom” or “Nana.”

THE PLACE:
Disney Magic, Western Caribbean, January 12 – January 19, 2008.

In 2003, my entire family (originally from Arkansas) was living in Las Vegas, Nevada. My parents had moved out in the mid-90s. I’d followed year later and eventually met my husband, an Alabama native, in the desert. After the birth of my sister’s first child, her family moved that way, too. My dad thought it’d be fun to take the whole family to Hawaii. We were all on board, so for nine months, we researched, planned and dreamed. We set up a message board to keep track of our thoughts and ideas and to share information. My dad burnt a hole in his charge cards. And we had an excellent week! Dad had found a great set of bungalows right on North Beach, away from the tourists in Waikiki, and by the time we got there in May 2004, we knew how to navigate like a local. If you’re interested, pictures are here.

Later that summer, Ken, Daphne, and I moved to northeast Texas. As 2004 became 2005, Pappy got another vacation itch. This time, he said, we should go to Disney World. Once again, the family message board was erected. This time, we used it even more, as my family was half a continent away. We studied crowd levels, traffic flow, restaurant reviews, and once again spent the better part of a year getting our ducks in a row so that our actual vacation would be both fun and relaxing. My mom retired from teaching in 2005. Two months later, my dad walked into the office and was told by the company for whom he had worked 16 years, “Nothing personal, but your job is being eliminated and this is your last day.” Facing this unforeseen speed bump, he assured us, “The trip’s still on!” It would be our last hurrah. So, once again, he wore out his check book. And, once again, we could not have had a better time.

The trip out, Animal Kingdom, Epcot World Showcase, Magic Kingdom, Epcot Future World, Disney MGM Studios, and coming home.

Almost as soon as we returned from Disney World, there were whisperings about someday going on a Disney Cruise together. My parents have taken 13 or so cruises on other lines and have loved traveling that way. About this time last year, my dad started suggesting the time was ripe to plan such a cruise. Thing is, there is no way we’d be able to afford it for years. I’m a stay-home Mom and I love it! We are completely debt-free, including our house (those who have moved from the East or West coast real estate markets farther inland know what I mean), and it’s awesome. However, our margins are extremely slim, and there’s not a lot left over after the bills.

Once again, Dad extended an offer: if we would pick up everything else, he’d pay for the cruise itself. How could we resist?! And, actually, they ended up paying for our passports and our onboard tips, as well (a pretty chunky chunk of change). Since Nana and Pappy have decided the only way to cruise is with a view, they put us and them in Category 6, port side, and my sister’s family of five in a Category 4, also port side, just up from us a couple of floors. Since we started planning the trip, my parents and my sister's family all moved to northeast Texas, too; we're all separated by 30 minutes to an hour.

By way of confession, I stole "Ten from Texas" from my dad's stateroom door design. I'd been trying to think of something clever for the title for weeks, but had come up empty. Hopefully he wasn't planning to use it for this board... ;)

So, here we are again! Less than two weeks before we sail, and we are coasting. Our year of research and development has meant that these last days have very little last minute scrambling. And it’s truly been a group effort! My parents forked over the dough for the majority of the trip. My brother-in-law, whose job requires that he travel a lot, used Hilton points to “buy” us a free room right on Cocoa Beach the night before the cruise. Here and there, I’ve picked up some themed wardrobe items for my nieces and nephew. And I think we’re ready to go!

Now.

So far, Daphne only knows we're going *somewhere.* Over the next ten days, more clues will come. Her guesses today were: the toy store, CiCi's Pizza, and her favorite hotel (a Holiday Inn with an atrium and indoor pool in fabulous Fort Smith, Arkansas). With the bar set so low, a Disney Cruise revelation is going to bring her to her knees!

Thanks for joining our adventure!!

P.S. The pictures are our stateroom door decorations!

What a great story, your family sounds amazing. My husband and I and kids are going to be on that same cruise, I look forward to meeting all of you.

Bonnie,
Seems like our kids will run in to each other for sure!

I'm Sarah, AKA "Aunt Sister", one of the Ten From Texas. You guys should stay tuned for the the rest of Laura's clue poems. It'll get you even more excited. I cried when I read the last day's clue!

I like the door sign! We're almost finished with ours. I just need my more-talented-than-I husband to perfect it.

We can count down the days on our hands now!:yay:

This evening during dinner, the doorbell rang. I opened the door to investigate, and what should I find but another mysterious parchment scrolled around some type of a bottle. Earlier this morning, Daphne had remembered her "message" and was ready to open it.

Inside the paper was a canister of spray sunblock. The note read:
Yes, we know –
It’s chilly here.
There, the cold
Will disappear.
If you go outside,
Use this!
Then no fun
You’ll have to miss.

Fortuitous timing, as Daphne had mentioned late yesterday that we might be going to Montana. The clue certainly seemed to rule that one out! Daphne has never been to Montana, but her dad and I visited Glacier National Park when I was five months pregnant with her. Since I've told her it's the most beautiful place I've ever been, she's eager to go.

She quickly readjusted, though, and said excitedly, "Maybe we're going to the BEACH!"

Just between you and me, the doorbell was actually the UPS man delivering our cruise documents! :dance3:

Sarah

Are you giving your kids the same clues or do they know about the cruise already?

Daphne had asked about her "message" two or three times this morning. Then when it was time to set the table for lunch, lo and behold, among the napkins was another scroll held together by a pair of goggles and a noseplug.

You can swim alone,
It’s true.
These are fun
When swimming, too.
You’re sure to like
Where you will stay.
If you want,
Swim every day.

She was VERY excited about the prospect of swimming every day, because that's one of her favorite pastimes! She did decide this meant we weren't going to the beach. I didn't ask why, but I'm sure it's because when we went to Hawaii 4 years ago, one of the first things we did was walk down to experience the surf. Being landlubbers our entire lives, we didn't realize how far in to the shore real waves can come! One came up to our waist, meaning it completely bowled over the then-two-year-old Daphne. Fortunately, we were holding her hand. Also, it cured her of wanting to run down the beach and into the water, which made staying beachside for the week a whole lot easier!

Yesterday, she'd mentioned that if she got a "shovel and pail, I'll know we're going to the beach." Stay tuned!

Awesome. And happy birthday!

Sarah --Are you giving your kids the same clues or do they know about the cruise already?

I can answer that one for her... Her kids know about the trip. And they've been SO terrific about not telling their cousin! In fact, they've been better than Nana, who keeps almost slipping. Last night, she was saying something about my sister buying a dress for formalwear, and I had to warn her to "exercise extreme caution," as Daphne was sitting right there! At this point, Daphne doesn't know anyone besides us is going on the trip. We won't tell her that at all. When she sees her cousins at the hotel, that'll be the first time she realizes what's going on.

My sister's kids do better with anticipation than mine, I think. We told Daphne about our Disney trip three weeks before we left. She cried for two days, wanting to go "now," and we instantly wished we'd not told her a thing. We're doing the clues so she has something to look forward to, but also because she's grown so much in the past two months, it is necessary for me to have her try on all of her new "cruise clothes" in case they don't fit! That's not something we want to have happen onboard. Plus, it's a lot of fun. :thumbsup2

My kids have known from the beginning, over a year ago! They are just as excited as we are.

I should pat them on the back for not telling their cousin this entire time. :thumbsup2

First of all, I LOVE getting to hear about how D is reacting and what her guesses are. :cutie: It gets me all giddy...well...MORE giddy.

As for my kids dealing with anticipation, there are a couple of things that make it easy for them. One is that our trip was after Christmas. That's made the past year a breeze. They didn't ask "how much longer?" because they knew it wouldn't happen until after Christmas.

Another reason is that their daddy travels so much, we do a lot of counting-down. I guess the daily countdown satisfies their curiosity about "how much longer?".

What a great way to surprise your daughter! Can't wait to hear more, thanks for sharing. Enjoy your trip!

This morning, Ken went out to get some breakfast from Jack in the Box. While I made Daphne's Ovaltine, she asked, "Mom, wherever we're going, can we invite Hannah, Mackenzie, and TJ?" I said, "This is our family's vacation. You get to see them all the time. Well, not all the time, but more often than when they lived in Las Vegas." She said, "But you could just INVITE them."

When Ken got home, instead of breakfast sandwiches in the bag, there was a clue, a deflated 40 inch beach ball, and a sand shovel and rake. Daphne pulled out the scroll and read:

Take a big, deep breath
And blow!
Where to use this?
Do you know?
Sun and sand,
A ball in reach –
Perfect to have
On a _____!

"We ARE going to the beach!"

She'd woken up at 4:00 this morning, calling her Dad. She had told him, "Dad, I think we are going to the beach at Hawaii. Because it doesn't make sense to use sunblock if we're going to be inside all of the time."

;)

She is really getting into this, and it's a lot of fun! She's never believed in seasonal gift-giving characters, if you know what I mean, but this is even better.

As an aside, Sister and Pappy, feel free to post YOUR trip report stuff here, too, if you were planning to do TRs. Several takes on the same trip would be interesting, I think!

On to narrowing down what beach(es) we'll hit...

Aww!! That is SO sweet that she wanted to invite them!! I'm glad to know she'll be happy to see them next Friday in Florida!!

I may post a trip report here, but you're much better at writing. I probably will post a simple TR with some pics. We're taking the Mac. :)

7 days until we fly out!!

New Year's Day, when Daphne got her first clue, she quietly came into the living room and looked up at the calendar. I have "4:45" written on January 11 (as in AM), and arrows through until the 19th. Daphne said, "Mom! You knew I'd look on here, didn't you? And that's why you didn't write it!"

Today, she was talking to me while I hung up laundry and said, "You know, you can write where we're going on the calendar. I never look at it. Really. If you write it up there, I won't see it." I said, "If you never look at it, how do you know I didn't already write it up there?" She then slinked out of the laundry room and a few minutes later yelled, "Mom!!" :rotfl: I can't believe I can't even trust my own flesh and blood!

When Daphne went out to visit her garage cats this morning (I have terrible allergies), she found a copy of Pete's Dragon and another scroll, which read:
Okay, there’s a beach
And more!
Lighthouses help
Mark the shore
When it’s dark
And ships can’t see
Where they aren’t
Supposed to be.
You’ll visit a
Lighthouse, too.
Where? Wait for
Another clue.

She decided this meant the beach wasn't in Hawaii, as she doesn't remember seeing any lighthouses in Hawaii.

Thursday, we'd gone to the nursing home to hang out with my aunt and grandmother, and Daphne watched the Disney Channel for an hour while I visited. She asked if we got that channel, and I told her no. (Our Dish package has Nick but not Disney; go figure.) Anyway, I told her that maybe wherever we were staying might have the Disney Channel and, if so, she could watch it there. What are the odds?

I'm going to give this a shot. Not much luck getting my posts to POST today!

Try LOTS of Disney channels if I heard right. I can't wait to see her reaction when she finds out! Maybe you could record it with your camera?
