Ten from Texas -- January 12, 2008 Western Caribbean

This morning, Daphne was helping her dad put some stuff away, and she noticed a scroll and a very cute Pirates of the Caribbean T-shirt tucked into his book.
Aargh, ye scurvy dogs!
Avast!
It’s another clue
At last.
Pirate things…
You wanna see ‘em?
This city has
A museum!

We looked up "pirate museum" and "lighthouse" online, and pretty much narrowed it down to Key West or Nassau. :confused3 ;)

Daphne was watching her cat hunting birds out the window after (our) lunch when she saw a parchment folded up in the corner of the window sill. Inside the makeshift envelope were a few pieces of Key Lime hard candy and this note:
Key lime’s popular
In Key West.
They brag their pie
Is the best.
Way down south
Just off the coast
Of Florida you’ll
Find the most
Amazing islands.
We will stay
On Key West for
One full day:
Pirate Soul,
A lighthouse, and
Chocolate-dipped
Key Lime Pie — grand!

"We're just staying there for one day?" she said. "Where else are we going?"

She is VERY happy about Florida, though. She has recently fallen in love with Carl Hiaasen's "Hoot" and the movie of the same name. She pretends she's Mullet Fingers, running around our acre and a half barefooted, climbing the trees, and claiming that "the wild is my home."

Tonight, we got home from gymnastics, and Daphne found a scroll tucked under her dinner plate. There were also some Nerds and a gold-foil-wrapped hard candy, which were both very bad stretches to NASA (the scientists and the lunar module, kind of). Regardless, the note said:
Also in this
Southeast state
Near NASA,
The seafood’s great!
Eat outside
Right by the sea
Near where
Astronauts may be.
Cape Canaveral
Is fun
(Unless you’re fish) :fish:
For everyone!

My aunt's funeral was today, and my sister said she bribed her kids $5 each not to say anything to Daphne about the trip! I must say, they did a great job! It was hard for ME not to say, "See you guys Friday!" as we were leaving! (I DID say it to KWBIII, but my daughter doesn't remember sign language, so she didn't catch it. :thumbsup2 )

I uploaded a couple of pictures of her clue-reading to this photo album. I'll try to get a video of her Thursday morning when she'll finally figure the whole thing out.

Daphne opened the newspaper to find the comics, and a scroll with three passports fell out!
You'll need these to travel from
The USA and also come
Back home again from where you've been.
Let Mom and Dad keep these 'till then.
Outside the US you will go:
A day or two in Mexico!

So what did she think?? :cutie: What'd she say?

:surfweb: This is me right this minute. Drinking coffee at 11pm.

This morning, after asking to have lights out at 7:30 (typical bedtime is 9 o'clock!), Daphne was still asleep at 7:30 AM. We have a busy day planned, and Ken wanted to see her get her clue before he went to work. Our daughter, who rarely sleeps past 7 AM, was OUT. He went in to wake her up, announcing that the last clue had arrived, and she kept snoozing.

A few minutes later, I tried. Still ZZZ. Finally, at 7:42, she walked down the hall laughing at how she'd tricked us. She'd been awake the whole time! Spoiled brat that she is :goodvibes , we gave her the clue anyway. It was tucked into a book about Norway wherein Donald and his nephews go on, what else, a cruise.
By now you know
You’re traveling ‘round
From state to state,
From town to town,
And even from
The USA
Down south for a
Relaxing stay.
But how to get
From here to there?
You can’t by car.
How ‘bout the air?
Part way, okay.
But then we choose…
You’re going on
A DISNEY CRUISE!

She grinned really big, and when her dad tried to explain what that meant, she said, "I know. Nana and Pappy have gone on millions of cruises." After he left, we watched the Disney Cruise DVD. As it started, she said, "I want to go now!" A little later, she sighed and announced, "The best thing is going to be just looking outside... at sunset." She got excited about the ping pong and video games, too. "I can't wait to do that!... Oooh! And that!"

Then it was time to start packing. She was out in the garage greeting the cat, so I went outside and asked if she'd really known about the cruise and was just teasing us. "How could I?" she asked. I said, "Well, I got your bag out to start packing, and it's full of clothes!" Curious, she came inside and we emptied the bag. It was full of bathing suits, pajamas, clothes, even underpants and hair extentions! She tried on everything, pausing for a while with the fanciest gown (which has a wand and tulle sleeves and everything she's typically not in to). When she tried on the Valentine's looking capri set with Mickey and Minnie, I said, "Minnie is going to LOVE that. She's going to want to hug you!" Daphne said, "She probably will. She's into 'style' things." ::MinnieMo

So, it's off to check in to our flight online now. I'm taking the computer down, so this might be the last update 'till a week and a half from now. (But if we have time and access at the hotel tomorrow night, I might be able to post something there.)

Here's the plan: 1) To take pictures of everything, including meals. I'll upload those as soon as possible when we get back! 2) To keep a daily journal in Word so I won't have to type anything when we return; just upload. I can promise you a thorough report with pictures in the very near future!

I uploaded a couple of pictures of this morning to the photo album linked to in my signature. I'm looking forward to this ride!

What a great way to tell your dd!!! I've tried to be creative during easter time...but what you are doing is GREAT!!

She will remember this trip and the special way you presented it to her forever!!!

By 4:45 this morning, we were on our way. It was a traffic-free, clear weather joy, and we hit the airport by 6 o’clock. Our shuttle took us from remote parking right to the gate, and once we’d made sure the world was safe from our errant sunscreen, liquid eyeliner, and kids’ toothpaste, we were allowed to pass through security.

Ken had snacked on spaghetti at 4:30, but D and I were hungry! At Auntie Anne’s, she got the cinnamon and I got the sour cream and onion pretzel. Breakfast of champions! The we all freshened up a little, and it was time to board our ½ full flight.

We pushed back 10 minutes early and landed 12 minutes early! It was awesome. Daphne and Ken both slept part of the way, and D and I listened to Radio Disney on XM satellite! It got us in the mood, as the first thing we heard was the summer vacation song from High School Musical. D picked out several things she wanted to buy from the SkyMall catalogue (including Lucious Malfoy’s walking cane, a bargain at $95, what with the secret wand hidden inside), and before we knew it, we were in Orlando!

Although I’d booked and pre-paid a subcompact on Hotwire through Avis, for some reason we got a PT Cruiser. Fun! By 1 o’clock, we were in Cocoa. As we came over a hill on the way in, I could see the Disney Cruise terminal! It’s unmistakable! There was what looked like a HUGE ship at the other terminal, but I don’t know much since I’ve never seen a cruise ship up close.

We checked into the DoubleTree Cocoa Beach, a hotel booked by my brother-in-law Ken through his Hilton points. We would have appreciated any free room, but THIS free room has a microwave, refrigerator, and ocean view from the patio! It’s fabulous! Not to mention the warm, ultra-yummy in the first place but especially decadent when one is famished chocolate chip cookies we got at check-in!

Of course, the first thing we did was change into swim gear and hit the pool downstairs. It’s not big, but it’s warm and the atmosphere is relaxing. We were instantly in vacation mode. After twenty minutes or so, we walked through a gate, over a bridge through some scrub, and ended up on the beach. It was a gorgeous sunny day, a few puffy clouds in the sky, and the temperature was in the mid-70s. Ken and Daphne played in the waves, but the water was too chilly for me.

After a half-hour or so on the beach, Daphne and I went back to the pool while Ken came upstairs to get a few things. He came back down with a piece of paper for a shopping list – we had to replace the several things that were confiscated at the airport (thankfully, none of those were lithium batteries, which I’d heard might be a problem, and which I have about half a dozen extras packed). We made our list and he took off, then we decided to go back down to the beach for a bit.

We’d walked out and Daphne was returning a shell to our pile of goodies when – TJ! She saw her cousins. It was like we’d met them at the grocery store. She was excited, but there was no catch-up time; they just hugged for a minute and ran toward the ocean! They played out there for half an hour, then swam together half an hour, and we came back up to the room to shower and get ready for dinner.

Daphne showered then played one of her favorite hotel games: jumping from one bed to another. (I hope the people on the 4th floor were out for the afternoon.) We found Ken sitting on the patio with a pair of binoculars and a beer. He didn’t look like he was too lonely without us!

I got cleaned up and threw all of our swim suits, including the Brownies’, in the dryer downstairs. It was nearly five o-clock, and we were starting to get hungry! (Yep, I think we’d worked our way through the pretzel and cookie.) We made our way down to Grill’s Seafood Deck and Tiki Bar. As we drove down toward it, we saw the ship I’d noticed earlier putting out to see. It was a Royal Caribbean ship, and I was so excited! “Tomorrow that will be us!”

We had to wait for our table at Grill’s but we didn’t mind at all. We stood out on the dock, watching pelicans. We also saw a little boat come in with a dead shark on board! Daphne noticed it first, and I thought maybe it was fake, like an advertisement for a fishing or charter service. But, nope. The guy had caught a shark on this tiny fishing pole (which had snapped in half as he was reeling it in).

For dinner, Ken chose a fish and cheese sandwich. Daphne and I decided to try a number of things, and they were all delish! We got conch fritters, sweet potato fries, and two cups of chowder: New England clam and Manhattan fish. Mmmm. So very, very tasty. We brought part of the Manhattan chowder “home” for Ken to have for breakfast in the morning. We polished the rest of it off pretty tidily. Daphne wanted dessert, so we stopped by Wendy’s and got her a Frosty. Tomorrow, the week of free desserts starts; we didn’t feel like paying $4 for something most of which she wouldn’t eat, anyway.

Ken is snoring right now, and Daphne is trying her darndest to avoid sleep! I uploaded pictures from the day to the DCL album. Today’s pictures start here.

See you in a week!

What a great report so far.
I love the pictures!!
Have a wonderful cruise, I can't wait to hear about the rest.

Great photos! I'm looking forward to more pics, and hearing about your cruise.

subbing! can't wait to read more. We are going on the western in 3 months and my parents are going too. We have also done Hawaii with my parents and brother and sister in law. I love family vacations.

What a great day! I’m tired, but it’s a fun tired, for sure.

This morning, Ken and I both woke up at 5 o’clock, so I just got up and showered. Looking out from the patio of our hotel, we could see the Carnival ship come in. Disney was already docked by the time we looked. It made it seem very real!

Daphne and Ken headed down to the beach at 7:00, then when they got back, we and the Brownies headed up to the concierge level of the hotel (thanks again, Ken!) for free breakfast.

We stopped by Ron Jon on our way to the port, as we had some time to kill. I saw a beach chair I bought for $2.14 at the end of the season at CVS for $34.99.

We got to the port early and had to wait across the street for them to tell us we had the “all clear” to enter the terminal parking. At 10:15, we were allowed in. Daphne immediately planted herself in front of a television and watched cartoons for nearly two hours!

We got boarding passes for Group 2, then we got the kids their armbands and our pagers. By then, Nana and Pappy had arrived. Daphne hadn’t seen them until then!

We visited, looked at the cutaway model of the ship, took pictures with Mickey Mouse, and watched them load luggage from outside of the terminal until it was time to board.

As soon as we got on the ship, our family headed to Rockin’ Bar D to see about getting Palo brunch reservations (they’d been full online). After a brief “Sorry you’ll have to be on the waiting list,” a 10 o’clock position opened up for us tomorrow morning! Woo hoo! Then I hit Guest Services to sign up for the galley tour our first at-sea day. The lady looked at the computer and said, “I see you have a six-year-old girl. Do you want tickets to Tea with Alice?” Of course I did! I just wasn’t thinking about it.

All business handled, we went to Deck 9 to grab a bite at Topsiders. I wanted to take it easy, but enjoyed the tomato and red onion salad immensely. Daphne went gourmet all the way; mac and cheese and a corn dog. Oh well, it’s her vacation, too!

The Mickey Pool wasn’t open, but we hit the Goofy pool instead. The Brownies were already there. In short order, Ken was napping in a lounger in the shade, I had a 64-ounce cool cup of Diet Coke, and Daphne was soaked to the skin. It was great!

Our room was ready at 1:30, so we came in to check it out and rest up a bit. Daphne watched television (what else) to unwind, and I explored the ship for a while. By the time I got back, our luggage was in the hall. While I finished unpacking, Ken took D to get some ice cream.

D was ready to do some exploration then, too, so we saw where the kids’ clubs were and looked at some of the art throughout the ship. We got back as they were announcing the lifeboat drill. From our verandah, we’d seen them lower a lifeboat and take it out for a spin earlier.

Then it was up to Deck 9 for the sail-away party. Daphne danced her guts out. We’d brought bubbles for the kids and they were a big hit. Once we left port, Daphne wanted to look around the ship some more. We walked Deck 4, which includes a stretch at the front of the ship through the mooring equipment. Daphne enjoyed the “secret” room very much, and is now an expert at the ship’s bowels. We also refilled the soda, an important event to be sure, before we came back to the room to fetch Ken for dinner.

Our first night’s meal was at Lumiere’s, the French restaurant named after the light fixture from “Beauty and the Beast.” Daphne got the chicken noodle soup (with Mickey pasta), cheese pizza, fries, mixed veggies, and a Mickey bar (with sprinkles). Ken had the escargot, vichyssoise, halibut, and Grand Marnier souffle. I had the escargot, also, Normandy salad, citrus duck, and white chocolate domes.

The kids had a great time sampling all of the exotic food; I think they might try ordering from the adult menu in the future. They all had snail, duck, lamb, and goat cheese. They all liked each of them.

After dinner, we went to check out the kid’s club, and Daphne wanted to stay! She’s been in there an hour, and will get to go back in the morning while Ken and I do brunch. I’m going to go get her now so we can all turn in.

Ken’s snoozing as I write, and I’m about ready to join him! It’s been a fun day. As Daphne said, “This is the time of my life.”

Oh, the kids were also incredibly appreciative of the servers at dinner. Our head server kept doing “magic” for Daphne, making her crayon disappear and reappear. She loved it!

P.S. When I picked Daphne up from the Club, she said, “I think I’ve stayed up too late.” She was all partied out! She fell asleep the minute I finished reading her Bible story.

This morning, Ken and I got to watch the sun rise off of our verandah. He was going to go run, but I didn’t pack his tennis shoes (bad wife), so he just went off to explore Deck 4. When D got up and dressed, she was raring to explore the ship, too. We sneaked off to the Deck 7 Aft overlook, where we met a man and his son. Daphne felt very sneaky. Then we stopped by the Brownies’ to say “Good morning.” They were just getting up.

Daphne and I headed to Topsiders so she could have some breakfast. Ken and I had 10 o’clock Palo reservations, so I was abstaining. D got two Mickey waffles, some oatmeal, and a chocolate doughnut. Breakfast of champions. It had just rained, and the seats where we were going to sit outside were soaked. We decided to eat indoors and ran into Nana and Pappy in the dining area. Daphne ate her breakfast as they finished up, then we went to check out the shops.

Daphne loved Mickey’s Mates and found a suction-cup gun included in a pirate set she wanted. I told her to hold off and we’d bring Dad back to look at it later. $6.50 (especially aboard this ship!) wasn’t a bad deal, but I wanted to make sure she really would stay interested.

At 9 o’clock, I checked Daphne into the Oceaneer Lab, where there were all sorts of animals lying out to play with, animal information cards, and animal pictures to color. She got busy coloring a snake, and I left to get Ken.

We went to the Cove Café to hang out and played a rousing game of Trivial Pursuit, 80’s edition. By the time we had to leave for Palo, I had all of my pieces of pie and Ken had all but one. So let’s just say I skunked him.

The brunch at Palo was, of course, phenomenal. Roberto, our sever, gave us a tour of the offerings, then we got started. The salmon mousse was probably my favorite savory item. My favorite sweet was the stollen bread with grape jam, fresh berries, and whipped cream. The bread was so good I had another piece plain after building the above-referenced delicacy.

After brunch, Daphne was just starting to make Flubber, so Ken and I headed back to the room. It was a gorgeous day off of our verandah! I went to get Daphne to take her for some lunch. She decided on Pinocchio’s Pizzeria, and we sat out by the Goofy pool for her to eat. Then we played foosball and ping pong. It was time to disembark for Key West, so we got Ken and headed off the ship.

A few minutes after we got to the dock, Nana and Pappy showed up. The Brownies followed shortly. The kids tried on crazy hats for a bit, then we walked to the Pirate Soul Museum. Daphne loved it. I liked it, too, and probably would have spent more time there, but the kids were breezing through it. D bought some “pirate gold” in a glass bottle. “Is it real?”

Nana and Pappy decided to take in the sights on the Conch Trolley, and the rest of us were headed for the lighthouse by foot. When we realized how far it was and how grumpy the kids were (it WAS warm, and they WERE exhausted), we decided two hours ashore was good enough for us. After a quick side trip to sample chocolate-dipped Key Lime pie on a stick, we were back on the ship.

Since the Mickey pool was all but deserted, Daphne did the slide several times. Ken reclined for some sun and reading. Soon, we were joined by the Brownies. They dug the slide, too. After about thirty minutes of that, we went to the Goofy pool for them to swim in earnest. They swam for an hour or so, then we all headed “home” for a nap.

Daphne watched half an hour of television (time I now see would have been better spent in slumber), ordered a cheeseburger and macaroni and cheese from room service, then went to sleep. She napped for more than an hour, and when I woke her up at ten ‘till six for dinner, she was not a happy camper. I forced her clothes on, and Ken carried her to Animator’s Palette. Once she saw the other kids and had a chance to sit and wake up for a bit, she perked up a little.

Ken and I ordered the exact same things: seafood avocado wraps, butternut squash soup, bacon-wrapped filet mignon with seafood pastry, and chocolate peanut butter pie with coffee and vanilla sauces. Daphne ordered from the kid’s menu, but only ate the cantaloupe from her fruit salad and the fries from her (second) cheeseburger. She’d just eaten an hour and a half before that, so I understood. She got her dessert from the adult menu, though: double chocolate fudge cake. It was dense and mousse-y, and very yum. She ate about a fourth of it.

Before dinner was over, she was ready to go to the Lab for Goofy’s PJ party. They played games, colored a pillowcase, and had a visit from Goofy (whom we saw in the corridors wearing, yup, his pajamas).

Ken and I enjoyed the ship while D was in the kid’s program. We watched Key West diminish behind us, then we walked Beat Street. Nothing was going on; it was too early. The fun starts later than the hours we keep! We saw Ken and Sarah in the lobby and visited with them for a bit. We also bought Daphne the pirate set she’d admired earlier in the day.

I’d checked on Daphne once and she wasn’t ready to leave. When I went back half an hour later, she nodded at me and said, “I was about to call you.” She’s exhausted. I hope she sleeps in tomorrow. When we returned to the room, she enthusiastically examined the new gun. She alternated between targets around the room and her dad’s belly. I visited Deck 9 for my soda refill, and when I got back, Ken and Daphne were both ready for bed.

This was a great day, and we learned something: Stay on the ship ‘till we get to Castaway Cay! The real world is hot and doesn’t have free food or constant entertainment for the kids! We’re loving the Magic!

Today was our first “at sea” day, and we had very few plans. Ken and I got up around 7:00, and I went up on deck to get him some coffee and to bring some breakfast down from Goofy’s Galley. They happened to have, among the pastry offerings, more of that yummy stollen bread we had at Palo. Mmm. By the time I returned to the room, Daphne was awake and watching the end of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” on TV.

She ate and got ready to swim, with my assurances we’d find out when the movie was starting again and she could watch it then. We were on deck by 8 o’clock, and Daphne had the entire Goofy pool to herself for a bit! Finally, a tween girl who’d been in the hot tub citing frigid pool temps agreed to swim around with D. By 8:30, the Brownies were up and at ‘em, and they all decided to go to the Mickey pool.

Ken enjoyed the action on deck for a while, then came back to the room to read. The kids were content to swim for hours. At ten, Ken came back on deck to relieve me so Mom, Dad, and I could attend the Dazzling Desserts seminar. The chef de cuisine at Animator’s Palette made the white chocolate dome I’d eaten last night. Lots of cream, lots of egg yolks. So yummy, though. And we got a recipe to take home. He was an interesting man; he’s worked in the cruise industry since 1982 and with Disney Cruise Line since its inception.

After the demonstration, I went back on deck to look for Ken and Daphne. Not seeing them, I returned to the room to drop off some stuff and headed back up. Daphne was still in the Goofy pool, having swum for 3 hours!

We sat in the shade to watch “High School Musical” on the big screen, while Daphne ate chicken tenders from Pluto’s Dog House and Ken and I enjoyed sandwiches from Goofy’s Galley: roast beef, ham and red onion chutney, and turkey with cranberry sauce, all on ciabatta bread. Hannah and Sarah showed up and sat with us for a while to nosh, then Hannah wanted to go to her club.

Daphne and Ken tried to play ping pong, but something about the way the ship was listing slightly threw the balance off, and the ball wouldn’t go “uphill” to D. She was getting weepy, too, and since the deck was filling up, we decided it’d be a good time for a nap. One ice cream twist later (Daphne is impressed with my fancy soft-serve tops; I used to work for TCBY!), we were in the room and headed for bed.

I ran down to Treasure Ketch for a Reader’s Digest, then sat out on the verandah to read it (actually, I read the first part in the restroom so I could keep the stateroom completely dark and quiet until Daphne fell asleep). I got my Bible study done, and was enjoying the view a great deal. Ken went up on deck to relax and get a snack, and while he was gone, Daphne’s nearly-two-hour nap ended.

It was just in time for the Mickey 200, too! D and I went to the Promenade Lounge and joined 11 other family teams in a stiff vegetable competition. We were all given a potato, a huge carrot, 4 plastic wheels, 4 nails, 4 toothpicks, and a knife. We had fifteen minutes to make a vehicle using both vegetables, and the cars had to be a specific width and length. Our design was heavy, which I thought might help us gravity-wise, but when our heat came, the thing wiped out and fell apart! Daphne cried and stated that it wasn’t a fun activity since we didn’t win. There’s some sportsmanship for you!

We were finished by 3 o’clock, when Daphne had an appointment with Nana and Pappy to watch Harry Potter in their stateroom. Ken and I were off to Vista Spa, where we had the Exotic Rasul scheduled for 3:30.

At the spa, we were given locker keys where we switched our clothes for bathrobes and slippers. We were shown to a private area separated into two rooms. On one side was a shower alcove and a stone bench. On the other side of the door was a steam room with three seating alcoves and a set of sinks in the middle (a lot like the set-up in “Chamber of Secrets,” now that I think about it… but no serpents). The hostess instructed us to shower first, then explained that we were to first use the bowl with exfoliating salt. There was milk bath to mix in with it to our desired consistency. After we’d put that on, we were to steam for 10-15 minutes. Next, we were to use the mud. She said we were to put it on “problem areas” then steam for 10-15 minutes. She said that after we showered that off, if we still had time, we could use any of the more than dozen products they had in a basket in the main room.

The first step into the steam room was a shock. It almost burnt my skin, it was so hot! Eventually, after sitting down (heat rises, I guess, and I wouldn’t breathe up there!) and turning on the water hose to keep my feet cool, I did okay. Ken didn’t seem as bothered by it. It was stifling hot; it felt like I was inhaling through thick wool, and my glasses kept clouding up… except that I wasn’t wearing glasses! That said, it felt GREAT. SO different and relaxing and rejuvenating. And highly entertaining.

When we went into the steam room the second time, we’d just applied the mud. I guess that really reduces the friction between a body and stone, because I found myself sliding sideways on the seat, unable to stop myself. The mud seemed to have some mint in it, because my skin was tingling while it was on.

Next, I tried the polishing face cleanser, the face mask and the anti-aging eye mask. I also used the Devil’s Mint body scrub. After showering THAT off, I washed and conditioned my hair, then used the toning splash and hydrating lotion. When we stepped out of the room, I felt a little weak, but completely stress-free. It was great! They even have some water with cucumber or lemon available in case you feel yourself getting dehydrated in the steam room. I didn’t need it during the procedure, but we headed to the beverage station on Deck 9 right afterwards and I broke my habit: I had diet Sprite this time. It felt “cleaner.”

Daphne finished watching Harry Potter in the room while we got ready for formal night. Ken looked handsome as all get out in his tuxedo with red shirt (to coordinate with us), and Daphne and I both had on complementary red Asian dresses. We did Daphne’s hair fancy, and we both wore hair sticks.

I know they pay the Cast Members to be attentive, but it’s still nice! They were very complimentary of everyone in our party. TJ looked adorable in his little man suit. Something about four-year-old boys and ties. It’s just adorable.

Our Parrot Cay dinner was excellent, as usual. I had quinoa and grilled vegetables, creamy onion soup, a vegetable strudel, and French toast banana bread pudding with coconut ice cream. It seemed like more food than the previous nights. Ken had spicy chicken wings with pomegranate barbecue sauce and fruit chutney, onion soup, the beef rib eye with twice-baked potatoes, and chocolate walnut espresso cake. Daphne had creamy corn chowder, macaroni and cheese with mashed potatoes, and an ice cream sundae.

When the kids started getting restless after dinner, Mom and I took them into the Promenade Lounge where there was a family dance party. It was fun, and I probably had as good a time as the kids! They reluctantly left there to go see The Golden Mickeys, the stage show featuring a bunch of classic Disney tunes and scenes as well as a couple of new ones. They ended up loving it, and they spent a good five minutes after the show picking up gold confetti.

Now D’s asleep and Ken’s working on it. I’m tired! As soon as I get the pictures captioned, I’m off to bed. Four more days, and I’m looking forward to every one of them. We’re having such an excellent time.

Daphne and I have used the elevators twice maybe; otherwise, we’re always taking the stairs. I think this along with the portion control of the meals and the fact that we’re pretty much eating only during meals has meant that I don’t feel stuffed when I wake up in the morning, and my clothes aren’t feeling any tighter. We could be putting it away like there’s no tomorrow, but this way we’re actually able to enjoy the food and still be comfortable!

Ken and I both got up about 6:30 today. We were already anchored off of Grand Cayman, as were three other ships (Grand Princess, a Costa ship, and a Norwegian Cruise Line ship). Ken got out to stretch his legs, and I stayed in the room while Daphne slept. I got dressed and ready for the day, then Ken came back with some fruit and we sat out on the verandah for a bit. Daphne finally woke up, and we went up on deck for her to swim. My parents and Ken headed to the tenders, but D and I stayed on board all day.

Daphne swam from 8 o’clock until about 10:15, alternating between the Goofy and Mickey pools. It was a gorgeous morning! We’d planned to return to the room at 10:30 to change clothes for the animator class at 11. Our steward was cleaning, though, so we walked around a bit, visiting the medical center (interesting place; wouldn’t want to have to go there) and strolling through Beat Street, which is neatly decorated. We returned to a spiffed up room, changed clothes, and went to the Promenade Lounge.

A crew member named Oscar was instructing, and it was only Daphne and myself and another little girl with her much older sister. We learned how to draw Mickey Mouse, and Oscar gave us his demo copy as a souvenir. We went up to Animator’s Palate to look at some of the drawings there, as Oscar had told us we could see the line guides in those sketches.

Then it was time for lunch. We went to Topsiders, but it wasn’t opened yet. Then we went to Lumiere’s but IT wasn’t open yet. I grabbed a Navigator and saw that Topsiders was opened at that point, so we headed that way. We saw the Brownies at the pool on the way. As we were enjoying the Italian buffet, Nana came back, having left Ken and Pappy on Grand Cayman after a visit to Hell. She sat with us for a bit, then we went out to find the Brownies.

In the hall today, Daphne told me, “The people here are so nice. They’re nicer than you. You never ask me what I want and bring me whatever I ask for.” She said the same thing when the attendant at Topsiders helped her get two desserts and, when handing her the cookie, asked how many she wanted. Hannah has commented on how nice the “servants” are, too. They really are great.

D changed and swam for another hour with her cousins. KWBiii had talked someone into turning on the subtitles for the movies showing on Ariel View, so he was able to enjoy the time on the deck, too. We felt like the only people aboard; it was sweet!

When we returned to the room to change, Ken was here relaxing. He went with us to family craft time but left early to catch POC 3: At World’s End. The kids made cardboard-backed scrapbooks. The instructor of that offered to draw characters on the front so the kids could color them. Some kids did their own thing, but most wanted him to draw. He sketched Goofy on Daphne’s, then she colored it. He was doing everyone else’s, but since there were about a dozen kids, it was taking a while. Semi-confident in my new-learned ability to draw Mickey, I offered to decorate TJ’s book. It wasn’t half bad. I did Minnie on Mackenzie’s, but don’t think it was as good. I ran out of room; her giant bow threw me off.

Ocean Quest was having open house, so we stopped by. It was fun! KWBiii and I did the bridge simulator and, after successfully pulling the ship away from Castaway Cay, I purposefully rammed it into a sandbar. Good times. And five days in dry dock, according to the display. Pappy was going to try, but some kids jumped in front of him. Crazy kids. It’s like they think this ship is just for their amusement or something!

We were going to do the Wii games, but they were doing golf and bowling, so the kids were unimpressed. Instead, we went up on the Wide World of Sports deck to let them shoot hoops. They finished up with some ice cream before heading to the kids’ clubs for games and dinner.

Since they didn’t sit with us (and, I have to say, I missed D at supper terribly; she’ll be dining with us each night for the rest of the cruise), the sign language interpreters did. It was nice visiting with them. But, like I said, I was lonely for the girl!

The menu tonight was Master Chef. Ken got the tomato risotto, tomato soup, baked orange roughy, and chocolate terrine (a three-layer frozen chocolate mousse-type thing). I had the ham, onion, and cheddar cheese tartlet (aside from Palo, the absolute best thing I’ve eaten on this ship so far); beefsteak tomato and mozzarella salad; baked orange roughy; and caramel apple cheesecake with Oreo crust. I didn’t taste any apple and very little caramel (though you could see the caramel layer), but it was a good cheesecake, regardless.

Nana got the kids and brought them to her room. They were watching Brother Bear and all extremely tired when the rest of us finished dinner. They were up for seeing Twice Charmed, though, and I’m glad. It was excellent! We got to the theater by 8:10, so I ran up to Deck 9 to get Daphne a hot dog. Just as I returned, someone took my seat. I think Ken was looking for an out, so he came back to the room and ceded his chair to me. I heard another lady telling a friend that her husband was in the sports bar, having had enough of the Disney show. I think Twice Charmed was superior to Disney Dreams, though. And Daphne was lonely for her dad. She said, “We were all supposed to watch this together, as a family!” So right then and there we drafted him for family swim in the morning.

Tomorrow’s Cozumel, and we plan to hang out on ship again. Ken said he was going to go ashore for a bit. He had a nice time in Grand Cayman. He went with my parents on a bus tour that took a couple of hours. That allowed them to get away from the shop area right at the pier and see more of the island. They went to Hell and visited the Tortuga store. Pappy came back a bit before Ken, who returned with souvenirs. Tired, but with souvenirs, including our traditional “vacation magnet.”
