Temporary Dental Crowns while at WDW

I am going tomorrow for a fitting for 2 front top teeth dental crowns. We are leaving in 2 1/2 weeks. The dentist said it could take 2-3 weeks before the perm ones come in. I wasn't even thinking when I made the appt..or I wouldnt have made it this close to our trip.

I am worried that I will end up be at Disney with temporary crowns on my 2 front teeth and wont be able to eat anything without having to cut into tiny peices. UGH...any thoughts? Do you think my dentist could put a rush on the perm crowns so they come faster??

You should be able to eat fairly normally with the crowns. You might not be able to bite into a whole apple without cutting it first but things like sandwiches, burgers, etc. you should be able to eat normally.

Before you go, go to the drugstore and get some lost filling and cap repair stuff (I think there is a brand called Dentek or something) it is by the dental floss and such. Just in case one falls off. You just need an itty bitty bit to put it back on. You probably won't have problems but, mine fell off twice when I had my front two redone last year.

I'm the queen of crowns due to a child-hood accident. Temps are pretty good, you shouldn't have any problems. Just don't bite into an apple with them and cut up anything really hard (like chewy bread crust).

Also, I ALWAYS travel with a tube of Fixodent in my bag. If by some wild chance a temp. comes off you can secure right back. No biggie. GL!!!!

You should be fine. I don't think I was even given any eating restrictions after the first 24 hours, but mine weren't in the front.

I just had a root canal and permanent crown put on all in one day (in about 1 1 /2 hrs). Is there a dentist in your area with that option? They have a really cool water-type laser that makes them right there from a digital scan of your tooth. I'm actually from a very small town, and had to drive 60 miles to an even smaller town to find the new technology!
Wish I had more advice for you. Sounds like others have dealt with your issue before though, so they have some good tips. Maybe some of the magic of WDW will rub off on you and you'll get them before you leave!

If you are flying, be aware that an unsealed crown can cause some pretty nasty pressure-related pain when on an aircraft (it won't ALWAYS happen, but it can.)

If so, I'd carry some pretty serious painkillers with you, just in case you need them.

I have had only one crown, for a cracked tooth that didn't hurt--at least, it didn't hurt until it got the temporary crown! I have fairly high pain tolerance but I was absolutely miserable for those few days until the permanent crown was in place. It's been a few years now and just thinking of it makes me cringe.

I agree if you aren't in any serious pain now I would hold off on any dental work! I would not take any chances. If you do decide to do it find a dentist in the area now that can help you out in an emergency. Contact them ahead of time to check if they take your insurance etc.

So what did you decide to do?

Last time I went to Disney I was having some dental work done a month before hand - I thought no big deal. But I got the crown and I was in extreme pain. They kept telling me to "wait a bit longer for the nerve to calm down". Finally I could stand it no longer and got a root canal the week before we went to Disney. I had a temp crown while down there and it made me nervous but I never had any issues. I stayed away from sticky foods. I have never had a front crown done though so I don't know how that affects it.

I previously in the past few months have had 4 root canals LOL. So that was already taken care of. I went ahead and got the crown done yesterday. The temporary one is on really snug and the dentist said I should get my perm back right before we leave. So I have an appt the day before we leave to have it put on. I am not in any pain..the reason for me getting the crowns was to cover my teeth that I had root canals on so that they were protected.

If for any reason there is a delay...this exact same thing happened to me in 2009 for the food & wine festival.

I explained to the dentist my fear of enjoying a glass of Shiraz at the Oz pavilion or sinking my teeth into the Baklava in Greece only to have my crown come off. He said he could use a glue that was "more permanent" than what is usually used, but not the final cement. I had no problems at all and thoroughly enjoyed myself (nothing like eating and drinking your way around WS!) Only thing I did notice was that it was a little trickier to pull off when the time came. Nothing drastic, but it didn't pop off the way I've had in the past.

I was at Disney 2 years ago with a temp crown. I was careful with what I ate, but the crown still fell out when I was eating a snack a few hours before ressies at CA Grill. Nowhere on property had anything to stick it back in with besides toothpaste, which doesn't work that great. I'd definitely suggest bringing the denture cement with you. I also agree with PP that if you're not having discomfort now, you might want to put it off until you get back. Good luck!

I totally would just put the whole thing off until you get back. I've recently had a few put on and had a temp one that fell off and it was NOT fun and I wasn't on vacation.
