We leave in 6 weeks. It will be me, hubbie, son (8), two daughters (6 and 4) and my mother. Is it too early to start the "serious" packing. School starts Monday and the weekend before we leave I have a work retreat, so I will only have 4 weekends after tomorrow to accomplish this. BTW, we're driving our new mini-van which we have never packed before for a long trip. That in itself will be a challenge.

I have my lists and tons if items I've put away for the kids for the long road trip, and other stuff from Costco I've purchased for our villa, but I don't know where to start!

So, how do you pack for your family's vacation?? Where do you start?? What is your M.O.??

Thanks,
Vicki

I don't see why you shouldn't pack now. I would start with the things you need to pack but don't need to use between now and then. I usually make a list and highlight what I have already packed. But then again I am one of those who starts stashing things away as soon as I know when we are going, and my husband hates it. I have been packed for my DCL cruise a little over a month now and still have 2 weeks before I leave, but I still have things left to pack ( ie toothbrush, curling iron , etc..). Guess I'm just one that gets excited about Disney ( and I'm sure I'm not the only one;) )

I usually pack about 3 to 4 days before. I pack the things I defiantly want to bring. Then I try to keep some outfits out for work that I Can wash quick and pack before I go. I usually pack my personals bag in advance because I have to always buy a new toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and such for every disney trip. No clue why but i do! LOL

Then the night before I usually finish my main luggage, wash what i wore that day and pach that in my carryon (just incase).

One trip, I started packing two months ahead of time. We were going November 1st and I didn't want to pack away the summer clothes just to have to get them out of the boxes, wash them and put them into suitcases.

Normally, I try to get all of the clothes done the weekend before we leave, along with the camera and all that stuff that I know we won't need. The day before I put all the important docs in the carryon and swtich over to my vacation bag and daiper bag. I get all of the snacks for the plane ready the night before and they last thing to go in is the hair dryer and my glasses (just after I put my contacts on!).

This year will be the first trip with two kids, so I am not sure if I will start any earlier. I doubt it, since Thanksgiving is the weekend before we go, and hubby has the long weekend. I will probably get it all done then.

If we go this time, it will be in November, so I'll start packing as I'm putting the summer clothes away. I guess it's still likely to be warm for you in TX in 6 weeks, though. But it certainly isn't too early to start gathering your things together, especially if you have enough extras that you won't be needing in the next 6 weeks. I hate leaving things like that until the last minute.

Hi! I am leaving in 12 days for AKL (just for a long weekend).

I just revised my master packing list for this trip today. I have it saved in my computer.

I list clothes (2 outfits per day)
Toiletries
Other (things like cameras, autograph book, nightlight, cooler, etc)

and then my fanny pack list.

Get a box or bag and start packing things you won't use now. Cross them off the list.

As the trip nears, put away clothes (I always iron and pack them). Cross them off the list. That way you are not doing laundry at the last minute.

As the trip nears keep packing for a few minutes each day. Cross theings off the list as you pack them.

Make a shopping list for anything yuo need to buy. Go shopping and pack those things. Cross them off your list.

By the "night before" you should only have out only those things you need to get ready. Highlight everything left on your list , so you can easily see it. In the morning pack things as you use them, crossing them off. Give the list a once over before you leave!

You are so right to call them rituals.....................

I start the packing list soon after I make our reservations (11 mo in advance). When I feel I've gotten everything I can get out of the list (in terms of sheer anticipation enjoyment), I begin to gather items for the trip, putting them on shelves I've cleared in my closet just for this purpose. I usually spread the vacation purchases over several months, trying not to be too "organized," but if I see something I know we'll need, I pick it up and put it on "the shelf." 6-8 weeks before the trip, I set aside an evening to start the real fun - comparing "the shelf" inventory against my packing list. Sometimes I add a few things to my list that I picked up and forgot to put on the list to begin with. Everything else I go through, and mark on my list as "packed." Then I update the list on the computer, print out another copy, and put it on "the shelf" again. At this point I also create my "organized" buy list of all the stuff on my list that I didn't get yet. I spend the next 2-3 weeks picking things up on the list, sometimes looking for something specific, sometimes picking something up when I see it on sale. About 4 weeks ahead of time, I go through "the shelf" and the list again, this time packing whatever I can. Now the list is updated yet again, and there's usually just a few items left to purchase/find, and I do that over the next week. This process is repeated until the morning we leave.

Now, I'm packing for myself and 5 boys. My husband packs only for himself (and I'm glad he does), so I'm also packing any "extras" we need to take with us (beach towels, laundry soap, bandaids, cough medicine, etc.). Those "extras" take up an entire suitcase.

I have all the clothes for the boys waiting on "the shelf" but haven't packed them yet because I didn't want them in baggies for 4 weeks before we leave. I'm afraid the wrinkles would be permanent. Since we home school, we don't do the back-to-school shopping thing. Instead, we get new clothes when we go on vacation!

I also have goodie bag items (and associated list), sorted by person, for everyone going with us (16 people) that I'll give them the night before we leave. I still have to figure out a good way to package them.

I created a list for our "day bag" that I can mark off each day we're there so we don't forget bandaids or moleskin when we go to the parks. There's also a list for the things the boys and I should have in our fanny packs. (Believe it or not, the list actually helps me avoid taking too much into the parks rather than adding to the load!)

I also created a "pool" list so I don't forget anything when we go to SAB. Let's not forget the grocery list, the calendar with every minute accounted for, or the envelopes I've printed to keep track of our $$ during the week.

Is this overkill? Yes. Is this weird behavior? I'm sure of it. Do I love this? Absolutely!! Please don't stop me!!!!!!!!

We leave in 3 weeks and started packing a few months ago. Usually just the fun stuff. I packed all the tolietres (sp) , and just in case medications early. I packed everyone's DH, DS, and myself underwear, socks already. I usually take all the broken in underwear and throw them out so it leaves more room for all the fun stuff we get to bring home. Plus I change toothbrushes before we leave and again throw the old ones away before we come home. It is always the last thing to pack but when you are in ahurry you sometimes forget to pack. Last year we took my mom in her mini van and the thing we did because she took so much luggage is that we did not pack the van right. She had bags for our son with videos and then bags of snacks. INstead of keeping things close by we just packed the stuff in.

Also a word to the wise whether driving or flying I found if you make up your park backback ahead of time you can just go the parks after you check in instead rooting thru your luggage to get the right stuff.

We don't leave until Jan. 1 and as I was organizing the kids clothing for back to school I was making mental notes of what they would be taking to WDW so I could pack it right into the suitcases when the weather got colder. I also have a box in our closet I drop things in for later packing.
4 months that's not too early is it? :D

We leave on 8/26 - 5 days away and the only thing I have packed is film! Better get off the board and jump to it!:Pinkbounc

Make lists - detailed lists - lots of lists. :)

I make lists of what I will need in the car, plane, in my park day-pack, fanny pack, etc.

Start packing with the things you won't need until then. (Buy double of stuff you can - like toothbrushes, deodorant, etc.)

I pack my kids' clothes in outfits (shorts, shirt, socks, underwear) in individual ziplock bags with their name and the day on the bag. This makes it SO easy in the mornings. They can grab the bag out of the suitcase or drawer and get ready. :) You can also squeeze the excess air out of the bags to save space.

I started packing months ago and we don't go until end of December! Mind you this is just starting... I've been picking things up at $ Stores or sales when I see them & adding them to a Rubbermaid box in our crawl-space for the trip. Made sure to get easy-drying nylon shorts for the 4 DDs at end-of-summer clearance for our getting-wet-on-rides days at WDW. I'm also finding batteries & film cheapest now so am slowly stocking up. Some nice embroidered Disney T-shirts found at 2nd Hand stores to surprise them with down there should help with some of the pressure to buy there ... The hard-to-find-up-here Jumbo Ziploc bags...the receipt for the 2-way radios we recently bought so I remember to pack them (using them here already this summer)...

I'll be adding to this box the sunglasses, strings, hats, some summer outfits next week as I switch over their closets to Fall clothes.

Santa will be bringing them in their stockings much of these extra goodies for the car trip & there. They know they'll be getting the trip with their Disney Hoppers for Xmas from Mommy & Daddy & that's IT! But Santa still has to arrive. And I'm pretty sure he's filling their stockings with car-trip things, Little Mermaid goggles, some $ store pool toys, a new waist pack, a new beanie baby toy for a snuggly that will take up far less space in the car than bigger "lovies" at home, a disposable camera, some Disney Dollars, perhaps Brita Sport bottles I'm hoping to find on clearance soon, new Disney toothbrushes....

AND just maybe, if they're really, really good the passes to Universal that I'm telling them we can't afford. Hee Hee! We're going to see the Grinch with love from Santa!!! SHHHH! Don't tell.

Now I'm not really looking forward to the moment(s) when I have to pull this altogether & then cram it all into the van, but that's why I love you experts on the Dis to help me! Keep those tips coming!

We make many frequent trips. I have my standard packing checklist in a spreadsheet. If we leave on Friday evening, I will do some of the packing on Wednesday evening and finish on Thursday evening. Never do I start any earlier.

I like to pack all the toilettries/cosmetics etc in ziploc baggies. This is going to save you time if you are flying and your bags get searched, but I also find it good when driving. No searching through everything, you can see what is in each bag. Plus if anything spills, you are okay.

I always used to pack an outfit in a ziploc for each day too. I didn't this last trip and boy did I regret it! DD is apparently not old enough to manage the matching outfit thing on her own and DH is utterly hopeless! My boys had some interesting combo's on the days Daddy dressed them. And some of them, I just couldn't let go and had to waste time changing them again. Now I am watching the sales for those gallon ziplocs!

I also have a box that has the various snacks we are bringing for the vacation as well as the trip down. I am watching clearance areas for those new coolers that fit between the front seats of the car. We will have stuff we're not using on the drive down in a luggage carrier and will start packing that with a few suitcases as soon as it gets cool here. We also hit the end of summer clothing sales for some new clothes to wear on the trip. When TDS had their sale, I got several (!) items and asked for extras of the small bags which will be our daily treat bags on the drive down. I have each child's activity bag ready with Color Wonders and paper, a few new books, invisible ink books and travel size magna doodles that I got at t garage sale. I find if I don't prepack this kind of stuff it somehow gets used up.

We have a "vacation goodie box" that is a catch all for various items that we collect for the trip in the months that we plan the trip. We have sunblock, ponchos, backpacks, coin holders, film, video tape, sunglass holders, pens, clipboard, printed activity stuff, our laminated itinerary, pennies for the presses, quarters for the presses, walkie-talkies, small memo books, crayons, swim goggles, personal fans, batteries, a special memory collector Pooh box, body wash with a scrunchy, Lever wipes, and so much more. LOL We feel that we are just about ready for the clothing aspect of packing, but that will have to wait until we a bit closer to our trip. We are at the 27 day mark. Mickey

I just said to my dh today that I need to make up a list of what to pack. He's like already? We leave a Sunday morning and I know I won't start packing til the day before. But I'll have the list done before this (hopefully).
