Tell me this isn't true!

I received a letter from the Timeshare Closing Service today which says that the closing has taken place and the deed has been sent to the county for recording. They say this process will take from 4 to 6 weeks and that Disney will not recognize me as a member until that recorded deed is returned to them. On the phone Tuesday they told me they were taking the papers over to Disney that day and that within 3 or 4 days I should be in the system. Which should I believe, the letter or what was told me on the phone? Of course, like always when I get something confusing in the mail it comes ON THE WEEKEND when the offices are closed. That is why I am asking here instead of just calling them. By the way, I did indicated to them that I'd pay the extra $45 for expedited service, so maybe they hand carried it to the courthouse for recording. But if so, why send me that letter?

Once the closing has taken place and the papers delivered to Disney, I understand they get you in the system pretty quickly. That was my experience and seems to have been that of others. I haven't heard of anyone having to wait until the final deed is recorded and returned with DVC. Now other timeshares are a different story, it can take a number of months with most. HI apparently is more like 3-6 months usual.

A few days after closing on a resale, I was able to get my member number from Member Services. I also paid extra to speed up the process and it seemed to work.

Come Monday, give Member Services a call and ask them to look up your member number by your social security number. If it's in the system, they'll find it.

Good Luck!!

Do not worry. I got the same letter last week. the day I got the letter, I called by broker and she said I could call MS and, when I did, they had my new resale purchase info already and gave me my new member number.

But, if it is correct that Disney will give you a member number before it is recorded, maybe I'm still all right. I'd sure hate to think that it would be ANOTHER 4 to 6 weeks!
Thanks to those who gave me the encouragement. Otherwise I'd be pretty worried until Monday.

Carl: I think that applies to new sales, not re-sales.

that they are able to make reservations in about one week from the purchase, so it goes MUCH faster for new sales than for resales. Vacationman says that his was a resale and he did not have to wait, so I can hope that this is correct. My only question would be, "Why does the letter say what it does if in both the case of new and resales it is NOT true?"

The information in the letter is true for almost all timeshares, DVC appears to be a major exception. I suspect this is a generic letter. I know for certain that I was able to get my number and make reservations with my two previous resales shortly after closing and way ahead of getting the deed back.

I also know that with Marriott, I had to have the recorded deed sent to them in order to even get them to take any action.

confirmed what has been said here. The letter applies to nonDisney timeshares. Disney accepts the copy of the title for entering your membership. However, as of today, my name is still NOT in the system. I guess that a few days early or later will not make much difference in my being able to get the dates I want. I'll probably have to be wait listed anyway.

The timeshare closing service says that the delay may now be due to the fact that the previous owner had a mortgage and Disney has to credit the payoff before they will transfer the membership to me. Ahaaak! The waiting is killing me. Since it appears that the dates I want are difficult to get, I want to begin working on getting them.

We bought a resale at VB that had points that had to be used in a short period of time. We were able to get our member number within a couple of days after closing on the property and we successfully scheduled to use the points right away prior to actually receiving the deed in the mail. Hope this helps.

it obviously did NOT happen in my case. It has been 9 days since closing and still nothing. The closing agent says that she has a call in to Disney to see if she can find out why there is a delay. They did not call her back yesterday.

nothing is available for the Dis Con dates.
I asked to be wait listed for either BWV, BCV, or VWL. Now I'll have to wait and see if DVC was really the thing for me or not. My parents never would join any timeshares because they had always heard that you never can get the dates you want. Now, my mother is already saying "I told you so!"

I'll bet that HH is available for those dates!! :D :D

Good luck...and

They did also check Old Key West, but it was not available, even though I did not want it anyway.

unfortunately, DIS con is at a very popular time for DVC. It is a low point time as well as Holiday time in the parks.

erick1050 - Thanks for the link. I checked our two DVC purchases and found out who we bought our resale from. It was always a mystery to me since we purchased our resale from a court appointed trustee and not directly from an individual.
