*** Television Fall 2010 ***

Word on the street is that both Burn Notice and Psych will be back with new episodes this fall (after running this summer). The series will each have at least six episodes left in their seasons, after their Summer finales. In past years, these reserved episodes were presented in January, February and/or March of the next year. Instead, if rumors are to be believed, they'll be presented in November and December.

Last year was a remarkable one for new shows, which you can see from the list of this year's Emmy nominees. The Academy, a group that's reluctant to recognize any kind of new show, gave significant nominations to 'Glee,' 'Modern Family' and 'The Good Wife.' In addition to those three shows, 'Community,' 'The Middle' and 'Cougar Town' all had strong creative first seasons, with decent-enough ratings to earn them a second go-around.

Does this fall's slate of new network shows have that same potential? Probably not.

I suppose that's consistent with what I've said earlier in the thread... and the article then goes into detail about a few clear indicators that the networks know that they don't have any potential break-outs this year. As you can well-imagine, I've been following the introduction of the Fall Television Season quite closely for many years now, and I've never seen such across-the-board malaise. There have always been a share of nay-sayers; there always is for practically everything these days - people who are going to bash or denigrate just for the visceral thrill of voicing negativity. That's easily discountable. However, this year, what we're seeing is a lot of the traditionally moderate/reasonable people having more of a negative tilt to their assessment of what's being offered.

Folks who rely on television as their main source of entertainment are well-advised to start considering alternatives this fall. Surely folks can always fall back on reading books, though I suspect, like my wife and I, many folks who watch television also read books quite a bit already. So what are the alternatives?

Folks can pick up old, well-regarded series, which they missed in first-run, when they're presented in syndication. As far as I could tell, starting in syndication this fall are:
  • American Dad! (TBS) [9/20]
  • Brothers and Sisters
  • The Closer (Fox stations; and other local stations)
  • Criminal Minds
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm (WGN America; Tribune stations, including WPIX, KTLA and WGN; and other local stations) [9/12]
  • Entourage (WGN America; Tribune stations, including WPIX, KTLA and WGN; and other local stations; Spike TV in the winter) [9/13]
  • Friday Night Lights (ABC Family) [9/6]
  • Heartland
  • Heroes (G4?) [?]
  • How I Met Your Mother (Lifetime; WGN America; and Tribune stations, including WPIX, KTLA and WGN; and other local stations) [9/13]
  • Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns (local stations)
  • The New Adventures of Old Christine (Lifetime; WGN America; and Tribune stations, including WPIX, KTLA and WGN; and other local stations) [9/13]
  • NUMB3RS
  • Real Housewives (local stations, including many NBC affiliates and Hearst-owned stations)
  • Stargate: Universe (local stations, including WCIU)
  • Still Standing (ABC Family) [9/7]
  • 'Til Death
  • Two and a Half Men (FX) [9/6]
  • Ugly Betty
  • The Unit (WGN America; local stations, including Tribune and Fox affiliates) [9/25]

I'm excited about the upcoming season of Masterpiece! on PBS. In October, they're dramatizing my favorite mystery series by Henning Mankell -- Kurt Wallander mysteries. I'm not sure if these are reruns or not -- I believe they've done some Henning Mankell before...

Week of September 12
So after a small handful of Fall premieres over the last few weeks, things really get moving this coming week.

We're not a big CW house - we watch Smallville and Vampire Diaries (over the summer), but most of the rest we let past. So the first premiere of the season for us is Parenthood, this coming Tuesday. Given how rocky the start of this series was, I was pleased with how good the series ended up being, and looking forward to its return.

We're going to record Outlaw, but I'll wait to hear from some of y'all before we watch it. Led by Jimmy Smits, it should be a better program, but we said the same thing about some other shows, led by A-list television stars.

Of course, the week after next is the big premiere week...

TV Guide did not like Outlaws. They basically said that Smits' talent was wasted on the show. Of course, they've been wrong before....

No. That section is labeled "First-run in Syndication/Off-Network". It is not the first-run of those episodes, overall.

humanitaslogoblue.jpg

Four television series were named winners of the 2010 Humanitas Prize on Thursday: Glee, Modern Family, The Good Wife and Nurse Jackie were honored for exploring "the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way".

Ok, Bicker, tell me what to do Puh-Leeeze!

I just gleefully checked the sceduled recordings on my dvr to make sure that all my old faves are set to go this week. It's so great to see a full week of recordings lined up :cloud9:

Then, I started adding in the new shows. And right away I ran into a conflict: we want to continue to record Castle on Mondays, but also wanted to try Chase and Hawaii 5-0. Can't try both and still keep Castle, soooo, between the two, do you have a rec?

Thanks, oh TV Yoda!

I just was chatting with gometros about a situation we both have Tuesday 8PM: NCIS, Glee and the new series No Ordinary Family. His preference was the stick with the two shows he knows are good, and maybe try to catch the new series, if it gets good reviews, in reruns. I don't like that approach, since No Ordinary Family is likely to have some serial aspects (making it important to see the episodes in order, and perhaps even see them before they become water-cooler talk).

In your situation, you actually could follow both gometros' approach and mine: gometros' approach would have you surely catch Castle (because it is the known quantity), and my approach would have you surely catch Chase (because it is more serial in nature than Hawaii Five-0 is supposed to be).

A lot of folks have more options - specifically, you may find that one or more of these programs are available to you On Demand, depending on your service provider, if any. Also, depending on how you have your entertainment system hooked up (or alternatively your willingness to watch television on your computer) you may be able to take advantage of the networks making episodes available on their own websites or Hulu.com. (We can't, because none of these options are accessible to the hearing impaired. :()

A few other things to keep in mind, perhaps enough to delay your decision until it is clear whether either Hawaii Five-0 and/or Chase are worth watching over the long-run: The pilot of Hawaii Five-0 is going to be rebroadcast on Saturday night at 8PM Eastern. Better yet, the first three episodes of Chase will be rebroadcast on Saturday night a 9PM Eastern. In both cases, they may choose to add more Saturday evening rebroadcasts beyond these that they've already announced.

I hope this helps.

For folks facing a similar situation (time conflicts), here's the full list of rebroadcasts for this week:

Friday evening
ABC - Modern Family, Better With You, The Whole Truth

Saturday evening
CBS - Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods
Fox (late night) - Lone Star, Running Wilde
NBC - The Event, Chase, Law & Order: SVU

And for next week:

Friday evening
ABC - Modern Family, Better With You, No Ordinary Family

Saturday evening
CBS - none
Fox (late night) - Lone Star, Running Wilde
NBC - The Event, Chase, Law & Order: SVU

Totally helps! Thanks! That will give us plenty of time to decide which we prefer. I'll also check our ondemand offerings.

Cool....trotting off to program the dvr. And cheers to fall tv! :happytv:
