*** Television Fall 2010 ***

So I was reading an article about a new show by Spielsberg called "Terra Nova." Great premise about traveling back to prehistoric times and then I realized that it will air on Fox :sad2:

Bicker, thoughts on a show coming in Jan called "The Cape." Do you think that can be a success?

Regarding Terra Nova: Fox is no better or worse than other major networks in this regard, DG.... ABC and NBC have managed their series in precisely the same ways as Fox, for as long as Fox has, or longer. What you're alluding to is really the nature of the broadcasting business, with broadcasters being widely-held public companies, instead of closely-held private companies. Of course, broadcasters as closely-held private companies would present a whole host of other concerns, don't you think?

Yeah, they are doing a really good job building up interest in The Cape. I am skeptical, but I simply won't be able to avoid the series, due to the build-up, so yeah I'm going to give it a chance. I really don't see a path toward success but stranger things have happened.

I personally think Fox is turning into complete gutter trash. I don't have as much of a problem with the other networks.

With regards to closely held private broadcasters, yes, that would introduce other concerns, no doubt.

Well, I guess you haven't been bit by ABC and NBC like thousands of others have...

Significantly serial and spec fic genre dramas cut short by networks:

ABC
Flash Forward
The Gates
Defying Gravity
Life on Mars (kind-of)
Pushing Daisies
Day Break
The Nine
Traveler
Invasion

NBC
Undercovers
Heroes
Crusoe
Kings
Knight Rider
The Listener
My Own Worst Enemy
Bionic Woman
Journeyman
Quarterlife
Kidnapped
Surface

By contrast...

Fox
Dollhouse
Terminator
Virtuality
New Amsterdam
Reunion

I think that's all of them.

I think I read that The Closer (TNT) would be ending next year. I never really got into it, I've tried several times.

I'm still loving The Good Wife--just about every episode is top notch. I'm still a huge fan of NCIS, but I think it's more about the cast than the story lines.

I enjoy Blue Bloods, but then I love Tom Selleck. Hawaii 5-0 is OK, but it's mostly eye candy for me. I couldn't tell you the plot of just about any episode, but I enjoy the cast & the scenery!

Yes, The Closer will end after the next season, so expect the finale in the Winter or Spring of 2012.

Syfy has announced that Stargate Universe will not return for a third season. The series will end in Spring 2011, with the remaining 10 episodes of the second season.

I'm not surprised. Even though I stuck with it because I was a fan of the previous Stargate franchises, this one didn't have the heart that the other series had.

Some news this weekend marginally related to the thread... Two of the main forward-looking services have faltered.

FLO TV already announced that they're terminating their service in March. This was the group seeking to establish a new distribution mechanism for television (other than regular over-the-air broadcast, cable, or satellite) utilizing some of the spectrum that was recovered by the digital television transition in 2009. Only a million customers expressed interest in the new distribution mechanism, far fewer to justify the cost of offering service that way.

Also, Sezmi announced that they're doing away with providing cable networks on their service. Sezmi used special broadcast reception to transmit competition for cable/satellite service. They had previously been offering both local channels and cable networks, via broadcast (and other programming available via broadband streaming, requiring a fast Internet connection), but announced that they're ditching the cable networks part of their service. So all they'll be offering are local over-the-air channels (ABC, NBC, etc.) and online streaming for various other programming (like Mad Men).

These two, together, seem to indicate that the push many consumers have been hoping for, toward more and new competition for their legacy cable company and the two satellite service providres, simply is not materializing. There appears to be insufficient money to be made being the fourth or fifth competitor in a market. The FCC clearly has more work to do to bring changes to the marketplace that will result in healthy profit to be made for companies looking to provide new services in this space.

Better to have them plan ahead for the end of a series, though, than to have the series canceled in between seasons, leaving things hanging.

You are so right about that. I think it stinks but I can see that the show doesn't really have anywhere to go.

Yes, and keep in mind that this wasn't the network nor the production company deciding to end the series - the decision was Sedgwick's alone. I can't begrudge someone wanting to move on with their life, to face new challenges.
