Teens in Separate Cabin Question

Well, except for the fact that it's not allowed. :confused3

I don't understand this either. Does DCL allow kids to stay in separate rooms even if the room originally was booked with an adult in it? If not, then the only choice would be to book one room or adjoining rooms. If price is an issue then either don't take them, book a cheaper room category, go at a less expensive time of the year or wait and save up for it. Sorry, I just don't see why it's right to ignore the rules or requirements DCL has when it comes to booking rooms.:confused3

I have a lifeboat question now  what happens if a child is in the kids club and the parent is on the other side of the ship. Do the clubs try to connect the kids with the parent's muster stations? Or do they take them to the club's muster station?

Great question, I would assume that CM's have specific instructions for the situation. It would be interesting to get a CM's comments on specifics. But, I can only assume that they would not tell 100 children in their care to go find their parents. Also, the children at the clubs will be identied as beeing assigned to your room. A 13 and 14 year old assigned to another room on the other side of the ship with another muster station might be a different story.

DCL requires an adult to be booked in each room, but DCL does not check the staterooms to see if an adult is sleeping in each room. So unless they get a report about the kids either being alone or causing trouble, nothing will be done. That doesn't mean it's allowed, only that they won't check to see that the booking requirement (at least one adult in each room) is followed.

a 13 and 14 year old in a room away from any adults is crazy.

I don't care how well behaved you think they are, when teenagers are by themselves, they most likely WILL do something they should not. And in a hotel or cruise ship, probably something that will disturb or annoy others around them.

My cousin is 13 and she is very well behaved. But there is absolutely no way my aunt and uncle would ever consider something like this. There's a lack of control when teenagers are together with no adults. And it's not even that they would necessarily so something "bad" but a lot of teenagers don't realize that they might be disruptive to other people.

We would do band trips in high school where we had 4 students in 1 room (ages 14-18) and we had chaperones standing guard all night on each floor for a reason!

Having them in the room next to you or across the hall is one thing, but seriously...across the ship or on different floors....no way.

Well, we booked our cruise, and for anyone curious, here is what we decided to do.

After careful consideration and deliberation, we decided to book a cruise during a cheaper time of year.(We originally wanted to book the 2012 Christmas cruise which explains the cost issue).

We booked 2 separate rooms (I wasn't going to budge on that one), however, they are on the same deck and approximately 8 doors away from each other, with a wall divider.

Hubby and I got our verandah, and the kids got an inside room. In case you're really curious and want to check it out on the deck plans, we booked verandah room 6680 and inside room 6677.

I know there are folks who will still think this is unacceptable, but it works for us, and that's really all that matters anyway.

Bon Voyage.

Good for you! I think it's fine.

Here's a question. Would you let them wander Disneyland by themselves at that age? Of course. Letting them have their own cabin is somewhat similar. Of course you'll be checking on them, that's part of what makes them good kids to begin with! I saw your earlier posts, and can tell you raise your kids right.

The issue wasn't really letting the kids have their own stateroom, it was letting the kids have their own stateroom in a different part of the ship from the parents entirely. Would just make it harder for the parents to check on them.

To answer your question, yes, on a limited a basis, I would let them wander Disneyland by themselves, and meet up later at a designated place and time. We also split up at the shopping mall and meet up later at a designated place and time. They are 13 and 14, not 1 and 3.

Also, they both walk about a mile to school each morning and a mile back from school in the afternoon all by themselves. This summer, they rode their bikes 2 miles to camp in the morning and 2 miles back in the afternoon.

Kids need to be very well aware of, and informed about the dangers in this world, not totally sheltered from them so that they never learn a lick of street smarts or any survival skills.

If you looked up in the sex offender registry for your neighborhood, you would be amazed who lives near you, maybe even right next door. Kids are more likely to be in danger from the offender who lives a couple houses down from you than they would ever be on a cruise ship. At least on a cruise ship, everyone on board is accounted for by name, ssn, dob, cabin number, and home address. You can't account for anyone who happens to be driving by your neighborhood when your kids are outside playing, or walking to school.

I'm just not the "nervous nelly" type. That's just not me. I've taught them as much as I can about safety and survival in different situations, and there comes a time when they have to start becoming independent and thinking for themselves. Mommy won't always be there for them.

I'm not trying to put down anyone else's way of raising their kids, just trying to say that everyone's different, and we all have our reasons for parenting the way we do.

Well Cool Breeze, I'm glad you came back on and let us know how everything turned out.

Not that you need my, or anybody else's approval, but I think this way is a lot better. I'm glad that you decided to do it this way.
You were able to balance the freedom that both you and the teenagers want with something that is more realistic and intuitive.

I'm sure everyone will be fine. I'm sure you'll all have a great cruise. And I'm sure your family won't regret this decision. :thumbsup2
