Honestly, I could care less.... I'M FREAKING GOING TO DISNEY!!

icky. That seems like a very good word to use to describe it.

heck and sometime we might even take those people she lives with.....

Nah. Take the one who won't pout while in Disney.

WOW, how did I miss that Ponzi is coming to WDW? YAY!!!!!!!!!

Smidgy, poor Nebo, that sounds like an aweful ordeal. I am not a fan of stairs, and this just cements it! I hope he doesnt mess things up :scared:

Betsy, that is a totally adorable picture!

In news on the home front, we went wedding dress shopping with our daughter and some friends today. She was totally devastated that we didnt break out in tears when she walked out in the first one, LOL. The wedding is over a year away, so more shopping is coming, but boy is it exhausting (to me, who hates shopping, LOL, even all I have to do is sit and wait for the new exhibit).
And get this, her maid of honor is going to be........

her brother!

Yay for booking flights!

"Sorry, hon. Been there, done that. Maybe try later."

And.... her brother????
Does he know that bridesmaids dresses are made to look ugly so the bride looks that much better?

Leaving on a jet plane

I didn't take notes.

My (our) trip to Nova Scotia is long over.
Over two weeks ago now!
How the heck am I supposed to rememberfy stuff????

I've got a memory like a sieve; just ask Ruby, she'll confirm it.
I think.

I used to think that "memory like a sieve" meant you could remember things.
Until I looked up in the dictionary (this is the thing people used before the internet)
what a sieve was.

I think I was confusing that with "memory like a steel trap".

I might also have a slight... slight tendency to ramble when I have no clue how I'm going to start a chapter.
Or at any time, really.

What do I remember? Well let me tell ya.

I got up in time to get ready and walk with Ruby to the elevator.
She got out on the second floor, where her meeting was, I was getting out on the first.
Once again, I tried not to look too excited about my upcoming day.
At the last second, I remembered...
"Don't look constipated! Don't look constipated!"
I tried to subtly change my expression.
As she was stepping out of the elevator, she paused.
"Are you all right?" she asked.
"Yeah, sure." I tried to mumble as nonchalantly as possible.
"You look like what you look like when you've got the runs."

Whoops! Changed the expression too much in the opposite direction!

I assured her I was well and we farted ways.

Parted!! Parted ways!

My goal for the day was to try to get as much done as I possibly could...
while not trying too hard to do it.
In other words, I wanted to not only see the roses, but take the time to smell them too.

My plan for the day.
Head to the northern tip (or close to it) of Halifax's famous boardwalk.
Have some breakfast.
Tour the boardwalk.
Take a ferry ride.
Tour some museums and markets.
Head up the hill to the highest point for a panorama of the city.
Grab lunch at one of a few spots somewhere in there.
Meet Ruby, have dinner and see what she wants to do.

Some happened, some were... well, you'll see.

I knew I wanted to walk the boardwalk which meanders a couple of miles along the shore line.
And there just happened to be a bakery near the start of it.
And it was all just a five minute walk from the hotel.

I sashayed (yes. yes I did) down to the Two If By Sea Cafe for a quick breakfast.
I wasn't quite sure what I was looking for, but when I saw there was a barista,
thoughts of OJ were quickly replaced with thoughts of hot chocolate.
It was good, but what was amazing was the cinnamon bun I had with it.
Freshly baked only minutes earlier... one of the best, if not the best one I've eaten.

Picture? Nope.
It's weird, really. I didn't plan on doing a TR on this.
But I took some food pics. (Remember the chowder?)
Why would I do that unless deep down, I already knew I might? :confused3

Whatever. Moving on.

After scarfing down the little piece of heaven, I headed out.
I had a ferry to catch.
For the grand total of two dollars and twenty five cents,
I lined up to take the ferry over to Dartmouth, NS.
After a very short wait, maybe a minute, maybe two,
I boarded the ferry and headed up to the upper deck.

What do you call the second level on a ferry?
Is it the upper deck, second deck, first deck, windy deck?

So what was so amazing, so incredible, so jaw droppingly beautiful
that I had to take a ferry over to see?

Well, nothing, actually.

The ferry ride to Dartmouth takes a little over ten minutes.
Upon my arrival and disembarkation (I just wanted to use that word)
Disembarkation. A special procedure wherein a veterinarian removes a dog's ability to bark.

Sorry...

Upon my arrival and disembarkation, I immediately rounded the corner,
showed my oh-so-affordable ticket to the agent and re-boarded the ferry.

Why can you say disembarkation, but reembarkation isn't a word?
It's really not fair, you know.

Oh, wait. I just googled it. Apparently it is.
Stupid, though.
Sounds pretentious.
"Excuse me dahling, but I do believe it is time for the reembarkation to commence. Do come along."
Of course, then it would be pronounced "reembahkation".

So why did the ponzi cross the harbour?
To get to the other side, of course!
And if I didn't, how could I get these pictures of Halifax???

NOW aren't you glad I went???

I also noticed there was a cruise ship in port.
This was a good news/bad news bit of information I figured.
Bad news, in that the boardwalk and shops around it would be crowded.
But good news in that the shops around it would be open.

As it turned out, some were, some weren't.

Before landing back at Halifax, I spotted this curious fellow.

The Theodore Too.
One can only assume that no copyright laws are being broken here.

I wonder if I just got someone in trouble?
I assume not, since the Theodore Tugboat show originated and was based in Halifax.

After hopping off the ferry (I was disinclined to disembark),
I continued to sashay along the boardwalk.
There were four points of interest that I was, well, interested in,
that were on or adjacent to the boardwalk.
The first was the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
Halifax is the final resting place for many of Titanic's crew and passengers.
The museum has the world's largest collection of wooden artifacts from the Titanic.
I decided I would save the museum for last.
Sort of like dessert.

As I sashayed, I'd stop from time to time (smelling the roses) to snap a pic.

Right around here, I was going to explore the HMCS Sackville.
It's the last of the WWII Corvettes and Canada's official Naval Memorial.
But alas, it was gone to its winter berth.
Next time.

Right around here, I found a little shop called Sugah.
I was quite pleased to have both found it, and found it open.
I had googled places to see and it had made the list.
But it was supposed to be closed, so I had discounted it from my to do list.
Perhaps it had opened up for the cruise ship folk?
I didn't know, and I didn't care.
I passed it by for now, with the thought of returning for a later visit.

Continuing on my way...

I was approaching the Halifax Seaport Farmer's Market.
It's listed as the oldest continuously operating farmer's market in North America.
It started in 1750... or did it?
If you dig a little deeper, you'll find that the market has moved a few times over the years,
which is okay, and normal,
but the last time it moved, in 2010, some of the vendors didn't move with it,
and instead stayed in the same place.
So now there's the Seaport Farmer's Market and the Farmer's Market.
Which one can lay claim to the title?
I think it depends on who you ask.

In any event, I was completely stoked at seeing this place.
It boasts on its web site that it has over two hundred and fifty vendors
selling local products.
Over two hundred and fifty vendors!! A tourist's mecca!

But before I got to the market, (Seaport, or otherwise) I came upon this memorial.

HMC Ships for those wondering, stands for Her Majesty's Canadian Ships.

At this time, I got a text from Ruby telling me they were wrapping up early.
I asked what time she thought she'd be done and she texted twenty minutes.

Great! I knew the market (Seap... oh, you get the picture) would be right up her alley.
I headed back to the hotel, pleased that we'd be able to discover this wonderful place together.

I arrived back at the hotel room just a few minutes ahead of Ruby.
Minutes later, we were heading back out and I was babbling on
(I know. You're shocked... shocked that I might babble on)
about the market and its two hundred and fifty vendors.

We headed back towards the boardwalk, where I let Ruby experience what I had just seen.
And we passed Sugah, again.
Except we didn't.
We went in.

Sugah is a little shop that makes its own candy.
Who wouldn't want to stop!

Ruby and I both bought some salt water taffy.
I've had it before, but whoo boy, this stuff was good!

I also bought some icebergs.
Ever had a Crunchie bar?
Sponge candy dipped in chocolate?
Icebergs were the same thing, only bigger jagged chunks of sponge candy.
The chocolate was great, but the sponge was a bit sour.
Combined it was quite good, but alone? Meh.

We continued along the boardwalk until we returned to the market.
Upon entering, I noticed a set of stairs to our left with a balcony overlooking the market.
I headed up so that I could take an overhead shot.
I set up my tripod and was settling the camera when a man walked up to us.
"Excuse me, is this for the media?"
"Uh, no?" I replied.
"Oh, go ahead then."

Um.
Okay?

I took the shot.

You'll notice that it's not included.
It was a boring shot.
But not nearly as boring as the market.
What a disappointment!
It might have over two hundred and fifty vendors in the summer,
but in late October, it was more like ten.
Half of which were overpriced places to grab a bite.
No wonder the place was deserted! Who'd want to spend time here?

Like I said, maybe in the summer it's amazing, but now?
Not so much.

Bitterly disappointed, we left.

A short walk from the market was another museum that I was thinking of visiting.
The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.
It was a museum at the Pier where between 1928 and 1971,
over one million immigrants came to Canada.
I thought it might be interesting, but Ruby had other ideas.
A friend of ours, who once lived in the area, recommended we take a tour
at the Alexander Keith's brewery.
It's a brewery that was founded in 1820, making it one of the oldest in
North America.
The tour is conducted from an historical viewpoint with period actors.
So, while neither Ruby nor I are beer drinkers, it sounded like fun.
So we went.

We found the place, just a short sashay from the "market".
(Notice how I put it in quotations now? Its value has noticeably diminished.)
It was right about then that we realized we were slowly starving to death.
Right beside the brewery, actually it might have been part of the brewery,
was a place called The Red Stag Tavern.
We gave the menu a glance, it looked good, i.e. there was food!!!, and we walked in.
Just inside the entrance was a sign that proclaimed
"None of our servers wear pants!"
I presumed that meant that they'd wear kilts.
I'll never know, since all the servers we saw were women.
Ruby was disappointed.
I was not.

Ruby ordered nachos.
I had already had a seafood chowder, so I felt no need to order it again.
So I had the lobster chowder instead!

Oh, man. Let me tell you.
If you're ever in Halifax, go to the Red Stag and order this.
You will not be disappointed.

I may have gotten into a bit of trouble with the server.
I had my head down, buried in the nearly empty dish.
You know. To lick up every last drop of chowder.
The server, looking aghast, tried to pry the dish away.
She reached for it and I swiped at her with a free hand while growling...
and possibly scratched her arm.

Do NOT come between me and my chowder.
Just. Don't.

I tipped extra to make up for it.

We beat a hasty retreat and bought tickets to the tour.
While we were waiting, this young lady serenaded us.

See the archway on the right hand side?
Notice on the third stone from the bottom on the right side of the arch that there's a groove?
Years and years of horse drawn wagons going through the arch would rub their axles there.
After a while, it wore down the stone.

The tour was fun, with three different actors in period costumes, role playing.
We saw a short video of the history of the brewery and saw (supposedly)
where the beer was brewed.
I say supposedly, since I don't know for sure.
It may have all been placed there recently for the tourists.

Eventually we all (there was five of us all told) wound up in the bar.

Notice how she's holding the glass?
To best show off the beer?
Who holds a glass like that?
It just looks weird, doesn't it?

At this point, we were invited to try a glass of one of three different types of Alexander Keith's beer.
Everyone took a glass...
Ruby and I split one.
"You don't want your own glass?" said with disbelief and concern.
"Uh, no. Thanks. We're good."

While we drank, the actors entertained us with some songs.
It was fun and I enjoyed myself.
When the songs were done, they asked if anyone wanted to have another.
A few did.

One man asked one of the guides, "When did Alexander Keith die?"
All three actors gasped and looked at him in shock.
"Oh, right," the man said, "Never mind."
One of the actors grasped her fist to her chest.
"Goodness you gave me a fright! I was just talking to him this mornin'!
Alexander Keith dead! Don't frighten me so!"

We then moved to the games room where we played a version of poker.
We played two hands and I won!
And got nothing!
Easy come, easy go.

We then were escorted out and the tour was over.
Ruby and I left our half-drunk glass of beer behind.

:sad2:

We know. We're beer drinking losers.
At least we can laugh about it.

I don't remember what happened after this.
I think we went back to Sugah and then headed back to the hotel for a rest.
I do know that at some point, we headed out... and up.

Citadel Hill is the highest point in the city.
There's a fort there that was built in 1749.
I knew we didn't have time to tour the fort, but I wanted to get up there
to get a vantage point from which to see the city.

We started walking.
We walked the first block.... up.
The second block.... up.
The.... third... block.... <gasp> up...
The.... <gasp> fo.... <wheeze> fo.... hang on.... fourth... gotta rest.

I don't know how Halifaxians (Halifaxers? Halifaxeroniums?) do it!
Probably drive.

Three more blocks to climb.

Oh, God.
The Prairies are flat! Learn from it!!!

At last we got to the foot of the hill.
I looked up.

I already hated that hill.
But up we climbed.
Eventually reaching the summit!

We planted a flag.
Small children passed us by, staring at us out of curiosity.
"Teacher? Why are those pale looking people gasping for breath? Are they dying?"
"Yes. Now look away and let's keep going."

We were standing at a fork in the road.
Do we go left? Or right?
While I didn't want to tour the fort, I'd read that there were nice views of the city from the ramparts.
We picked left.

We trudged along on a mercifully mostly level sidewalk.
Eventually we got to a gate.
"Excuse me, is it possible to go inside just to take a picture of the city?"
"No."

We trudged sadly away.

We continued in a clockwise direction until we got to the front of the fort.
If we'd turned right at the fork, we would've saved on both cutlery and time.
The fork was at seven o'clock, the gate we asked at was at noon, the other entrance....
six.

Figures.

Oh, well, there was a spot (of course) to take pictures of the city.
Except they weren't nearly as good as the harbour view.
Oh, well. We've walked this far, I'm darned well going to show you the crappy picture I took!

Ah well, the Town Clock is a Halifax Landmark, so I'm glad we got to see that, at least.

By now we were hungry again.
I suggested a nearby place called The Economy Shoe Shop.
A former... you guessed it... shoe shop, the sign was left over and well.
If the shoe fits, call it that.

I don't remember what Ruby had, but I'm sure it was chicken.
I started with lobster sliders which were good and had the special.
Lobster penne, Louisiana style.
Both were quite good.

We walked around a bit doing some last minute shopping for souvenirs
and returned to our hotel.
We had an early flight the next day.
Really early.
Stupid early.
Insane early.
Five thirty a.m. early.
Which meant we had to be out of the hotel by three thirty.

We went to bed and tossed and turned for the next few hours.
I don't know about you, but I find it hard to sleep
when my mind keeps telling me that I have to get up in a few minutes.
Plus I was wondering if I was going to be sick.
I'd never eaten that much lobster in a single day.
Was my system going to throw up its hands and, well... throw up?

I was fine, but it didn't help me sleep any.
We got up when the alarm told us to and Ruby wished me a happy birthday.
That's right! With the two hour time change, I was having an extra-long birthday this year!
Sweet!

The flight, while early, was uneventful.
We stopped in Toronto for less than an hour and didn't have to get off the plane this time.
Plus, the TVs worked, so there was something to stare at through bleary eyes.
Well, I stared, Ruby was able to sleep.
We landed at about nine thirty in the morning, Winnipeg time,
recovered our suitcase and headed home.

Another trip, come and gone.

While it was a quick one, it was really nice.
I really enjoyed Halifax and especially enjoyed the coastal scenery of Nova Scotia.
Now that I've had a little taste, I'd like to get out there again some day to explore more.

And that wraps it up.
Thanks for reading.

Yes.... Yes you will.
How was Cancun?

It was amazing. Sad we had to come home but given what happened to Lady H, it was probably a good thing we came back when we did.

More importantly, how's Heather?

Well depending on how much you know, she is doing much better now. I haven't read everything yet, but she's finally back to work and slowly getting back to 100%. Since I was on vacation, I went with her to one of the presentations she gives. To make sure she was going to make it through the whole thing. Plus it was a long drive. Even though I think she could've made it there and back, it was probably good that I went. She made it through the presentation, but afterwards was a little fatigued. We went shopping for the holidays this weekend and she made it through the whole day. I think I was more tired than she was by the time we were through. :rotfl:

Thanks for asking.:goodvibes

We were chatting and Nebo mentions that Mike and Heather (Thumpers) should be back from Cancun by now.
I mentioned that I believed they were, since Thumpy had posted a quick blurb on this TR.
Nebo then asked if I'd heard if Heather was okay.
No, I replied, Mike didn't mention Heather.
Oh, he says, Smidgy heard something about her.

All of a sudden there's a banging sound.
It's Smidgy banging on the bathroom door.
"She swallowed some sea water and got sick!" Smidgy calls out.

MEN!!!! I didn't say she "swallowed" sea water. somehow she got it in her lungs.. maybe inhaled it? and from that she got pneumonia. heather wil come and correct us! lol!

I don't know if she will come and correct you, but I will fill in the pieces.

During our time in Cancun, we had booked a dolphin swim. What this entails is you get a chance to get into the water with the dolphins, touch them, learn how to tell them to do their tricks, then you get to do one of 2 choices: Dorsal fin grab or foot push.

If you do the dorsal fin grab, you stretch out your arms and once the dolphins swim by you, you grab and hold on to their dorsal fins and they pull you for a ride. Like what this guy is doing.
dolphin-discovery.jpg

The foot push is when the dolphins swim up from behind you and push you by your feet above the surface of the water. Like what this gal is doing.
foot-push.jpg

Once I upload the pictures, I'll show them to you. Maybe over on our TR so I can get that going again.

Anyways, both Lady H and I elected to do the foot push. I was the guinea pig and went first. It was one of the most fun things I have ever done. You can't help but want to smile and laugh during the ride. The only tricky part is you don't know when the dolphins are going to stop, and they didn't really teach you a proper way to dismount.

Next was Lady H's turn. She did wonderful until the end. When the dolphins stopped, she was in the process of taking a breath to prepare to enter the water. At the same time she was inhaling was the same time she hit the water so she inhaled some of the water. Once she got up to the surface and came back up to the shallow end, she couldn't catch her breath. She was really gasping for air. The trainers had to help her. Once she caught her breath, she did fine the rest of the day.

Fast forward to Saturday, the day we came home. Heather had started coughing a lot this day. We thought maybe because it was so more humid this day than all the others, it was causing her to cough a little more. Once we got home she was really coughing. So was I a little so we didn't think anything of it. It was close to midnight when we finally went to bed. At 6 in the morning, Lady H was still coughing a lot. I asked her if she wanted me to take her to Urgent Care. She said yeah 'cause she wasn't really feeling good. Then it happened again. Lady H couldn't catch her breath. It was the dolphin swim all over again, this time only worse. This really scared both of us. I don't know what she did, but she was finally able to catch her breath but she was really having a hard time breathing. Everytime she would move, she would get to the point of not being able to catch her breath again. Urgent Care is now out of the question, I need to get her to the ER. I finally ended up having her mom call 911 (as she lives with us). I knew there was no way I or her mom could take her. If something happened along the way, I wouldn't know what to do. Plus she would be in better hands in the ambulance.

Needless to say, after the ambulance got her to the hospital, they ran several tests only to discovere she had pneumonia. She was hospitalized for a couple nights in which they gave her liquid antibiotics, nebulizer treatments and more importantly oxygen. For the first couple of days, her oxygen levels would drop without them giving her oxygen. They almost sent her home with oxygen for a couple of days, but her lung function improved enough to where she didn't need it. Her respiratory team did a fantastic job. She would get fatigued quickly, but as the days went on she gained her strength back and is doing much much better. She's not completely back to 100%. Would say she's around 95%. Her doctor's told her that it would be about 2-3 weeks before she was completely back to normal.

Smidgy had it right though in saying she inhaled water. She got the information first hand from Heather's FB page.

Icebergs and Crunchier Bars! We call them Angel Hair or Honeycomb in Wisconsin; I have seen them here in Virginia under another name. My favorite Christmas candy!

Looks like a fun day, just wandering around, taking it in.

Congrats on getting a quick trip to Disney! Sounds like fun, and a good way to warm up a little in the middle of the winter. Trip report!

Thanks for another fun and entertaining trip report, P! How did I miss it before?

And happy belated Birthday! :dance3:

Thumpers, how scary about the lack of breath, yikes. Glad all is looking up now.

Aw, poor Lady H.
Tell her I said hi and I'm glad she's feeling better.

I don't know if she will come and correct you, but I will fill in the pieces.

Oh, I'm sure she'll correct you if you get any details wrong.

Right Smidgy?

During our time in Cancun, we had booked a dolphin swim.

Cool!

Once I upload the pictures, I'll show them to you. Maybe over on our TR so I can get that going again.

Good idea. This one's pretty much done.

It was one of the most fun things I have ever done.

Woot!

At the same time she was inhaling was the same time she hit the water so she inhaled some of the water.

Ah.
I was wondering how she managed that.
I couldn't quite figure why you'd want to breathe water.

I finally ended up having her mom call 911 (as she lives with us). I knew there was no way I or her mom could take her. If something happened along the way, I wouldn't know what to do. Plus she would be in better hands in the ambulance.

Wow. Not a fun situation, for any of you.

Icebergs and Crunchier Bars! We call them Angel Hair or Honeycomb in Wisconsin; I have seen them here in Virginia under another name. My favorite Christmas candy!

Really! I never thought of it as a Christmas candy, before.

Looks like a fun day, just wandering around, taking it in.

It was fun, but I'll be honest. The day before was better.

Congrats on getting a quick trip to Disney! Sounds like fun, and a good way to warm up a little in the middle of the winter. Trip report!

I don't remember the last time I took a winter vacation.
Pre-kids we would usually travel in spring or fall (shoulder seasons).
Then we would only travel during summer or spring break.
I'm really looking forward to getting away from the cold, even if it's only for a few days.

Trip report?
Yeah. Probably.
I'm thinking that if I write about Disney, maybe some of the readers I lost will come back.
Or maybe even get some new ones.

Thanks for another fun and entertaining trip report, P! How did I miss it before?

Glad you enjoyed it! :)

Well since Nebo is monitoring this TR, I'd like to wish him a very happy birthday tomorrow.

I'm doing it early because my oldest turns 18 tomorrow and we will be busy celebrating!

2 of my favorite peeps share an amazing day!

Expect a phone call tomorrow from us!

LY/MI! Get healthy!

I don't think he's on the 'puter much anymore, so I wasn't going to post anything.
But then I thought, "Well, Smidgy sometimes checks in and she can pass along well wishes."
So...

Hi Pkondz
I’ve not posted for a wee while now but just had to comment when I read your comment on the crunchy that you purchased in Halifax. When we visit the world we take with us some chocolate for the maids which we leave in the morning for them to savour hoping that it is unlike to the UK and can’t be purchased in the States. We normally take Crunchies & Tunnocks Carmel wafers. This year went into the UK Shop in epcot and there they were in full display [ our illusions were dashed] and on sale quite a bit more than we pay for them back here but I suppose you have the shipping costs to add. Saving grace was we also had Tunnocks Carmel logs which we didn’t find so for the rest of the trip the so the logs were left out. Just for info you ever come over here sponge candy is called Puff candy amazing how things the same can be called different names I have been following your report [lurking]since the start its great you have a trip to the world in February have enjoyed following all your report since the beginning.

OMG! There’s more?????

Kidding. I’m kidding. I’m a big fan of the TR-Within-a-TR genre! :woohoo:

And I see a ticker I hadn’t noticed before. A solo trip to WDW soon?? Excellent!

Oh, how I love it when miles can actually successfully be used for tickets!!!! YES! So rare on short notice. (For example, I booked Willow’s and my tickets for our Summer 2015 trip some time ago because I really needed a no airfare situation for that trip.)

 Travel days - always awesome…..

Wow - the pics from Peggy’s Cove are gorgeous! I’m pretty disappointed not to see the other selfies though…..

The Islandview Restaurant and Bakery sure was a great find! I think the chowder looks delicious.

Dang! Those are some amazing pictures you got. What a beautiful place to visit!

:rotfl2: Betty!!!! She’s as bad as Elizabeth!

Okay - ran out of time. I’ll be back to read the next update!
