Bezos wedding

Kind of shocking that when the impressionists were coming of age none of the mainstream Parisian salons wanted anything to do with their junk paintings. They were told no one is going to give you one penny for that garbage.
I am reading O'Keefe and stieglitz by Benita eisler...100 years ago struggle.. very 🤔 intense information...so just bites at a time

Is that really accurate? What people really aren't happy about is the rent is too damm high. Of course those complaints have been going on for years and tourists are just the latest group to get blamed for it. We all know the person renting out an AirBnB for $1,000 a night doesn't dislike the tourists.
All I saw on national news was that Barcelona had massive protests and France was having problems with tourists gawking and crowding streets and Norte Dame... didn't pay attention as I don't see it as a forthcoming Jeopardy category and I have no interest in Europe

From what I recall reading over the past several years, the “locals” in Venice were being priced out of the city. Housing was one such area of concern, and now some reside on the mainland and commute in to work there. But during peak travel seasons the number of tourists can make commuting very difficult too.

As a result, Venice instituted a couple of measures, though I have yet to read how successful they were. One was banning large cruise ships from the historic city center (I forget the name of the canal involved). Anyway, I was never clear on how that was expected to help meter tourism, as compared to other expected benefits like protecting the buildings, lessening erosion, etc.

Another measure was instituting a daily fee for day trippers during peak seasons. While it earns extra revenue for the city, and maybe they will use that money to try and improve the situation, I am not sure how much impact it had on the number of tourists.

But as others have mentioned, tourism is a major source of revenue for Venice. I am sure there were a number of places that had “a good week” due to the wedding.

Security ain’t cheap.

The King of Cardboard has a Queen again.
Well.... okay here I go 😹 😹...all of the coverage... I mean lack of coverage... been looking at this recent box arrival for several days and I can't help but chuckle. .....Fast delivery is my love language...so the 😺 😺 cat is out of the box 🙀🙀🙀... nothing left to our imagination

I doubt you are getting an accurate portrayal of the issue by having a reporter wander into a crowded protest. If you catch them on the day he rent is due they are complaining about tourists and AirBnbs decreasing the rental stock. A week later on pay day and they are getting a huge paycheck that is coming out of the pocket of the tourists they have a different view.

Would be wonderful if the new couple donated an amount equal to the cost of the wedding to......alleviate hunger, build affordable housing, buy medicines for the poor.....
I'm with the PP who argues that people can spend their money how they wish, but several sources have reported that the Bezoses donated 3 million euros to charities in Italy.

Article posted by OP is behind a paywall, but don't really care how someone chooses to spend their own money.
100% agree 👍 it’s like the constant bellyaching about what people pay for a vacation at the destination of their choice as compared to what they could have done elsewhere.

34 million eh. I wonder how much that will be per year they stay married? Feel free to quote me with your guess.

I must admit the haystacks are lame. But I do like impressionism in general.

Big whoop. He's worth billions. For the median American to donate the same percentage of their wealth would be about 25 cents.

They've been building massive breakers to help with flooding, they help keep the water from getting as much into the canals when rise in waters is expected but the entire island parts of the city can't truly be stopped from sinking, it's just lessening the impact when it happens.

As far as cruise ships it was also a sight thing, having massive ships along historical sites. As far as impact it mainly depends on what ships you would do. Many of those massive ships they were trying to get rid of just don't do Venice itself, they go to Trieste (far enough away) or Ravenna (also far away). Having had our cruise in 2023 start actually in Venice ships that are able to dock there but not small enough to dock inside the actual city seem to go to Fusina which is the industrial port on the mainland.

Our ship had us meet at the old cruise terminal and we were shuttled by bus to Fusina which was about a 20 min bus ride away.

While we were in Venice (as we arrived a few days ahead of our cruise) we did see riverboats from Uniworld for example docked actually in Venice as they meet the size restriction.

That one doesn't seem to be working very well, they increased the amount and the locals likened the turnstiles to a unsightly theme park atmosphere. Many locals have largely left due to unaffordability in housing and overcrowdedness.

Another measure they have done has been prohibit larger tour groups (can only have 25 people or less) and no megaphones.

Personally I loved that we stayed in Murano because while we weren't there when it was extremely crowded it was a lot, Murano on the other hand was so much more calmer and quite charming. I can sympathize with people in Venice, it's a beautiful place that has a lot of issues with it, tourism is just one, seeing sinking properties in person drives home that.
