Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Congrats to all who raced this weekend. :cool1:

I'm looking forward to reading all of your race reports. :goodvibes

I'll have my race report ready tomorrow, but I wanted to say how cool it was to meet some more cousins today. I met JenB and Corinna at Disneyland last fall, and I got to meet Debra and Worfiedoodles today! Plus I got to meet the infamous DOOD too! How cool is that!!

Wow - a race report so soon! I have all the photos from the half as well.....though they are still trapped in the camera.

It was the most fortuitous meeting of Ohana-ites I ever saw. I was walking to Canada and there were Maria and Dennis. We paused a while and along came Debra and Dood. Then the Buccigrossi family and then you, and all fairly unplanned! It was like...the magic of Epcot or something!!!!

Looks like our teammates at home enjoyed some ice cream on Saturday afternoon. Interestingly enough, you ate more ice cream than we did at the Beaches & Cream meet!

After four early mornings and five long days, I am just going to go and sleep now. Big HUGS to all the cousins - I'm so glad to be part of this team!

Uh-oh. Back to back postings = kiss of death, right? I have had a crazy-nutso time since I got home, but wanted to share the best photo I have from the race. Unfortunately, the ones before dawn (in MK) were not so good - my stupid camera. I'll post them later, but here's one of me and John - we were lucky we got this one, actually, cause I'd ditched him to speed up about 100 feet earlier, then saw there was no line for Chip & Dale and, of course....stopped  Thankfully, he jumped in when he saw me!

I shoveled a bunch last night and today, Bodypump. It's the last day they are doing the "New Release" so I'm excited to see what's new.

I love how Chip has this look on his face like "hmmm, what's the deal with this guy in the blue hair?" and Dale is going "cool, I got to stand next to the hot chick!"

It is amazing how expressive those characters can be - I totally see what you are saying!!! Dale IS looking surprisingly lecherous, and Chip looks far more astounded than you'd expect for someone who lives and works with all kinds of crazy characters!

I don't know about you, Richard, but lately, I've been feeling very grateful that I was lucky enough to be randomly assigned to THIS particular team. I've been happy with it all along, mind you, and maybe I'd feel this way whichever team I was on, but so many of my very, very favorite WISHers are from this thread and I'm just very grateful!

:grouphug:

Now for a question: Do we want to continue on with this thread until we have to go to a new one or do we want to start a new one for 2011? A little late, I know. And in some ways, I hate to move because, well, it is unfortunately easy to lose people who don't check in regularly and don't notice right away when they stop getting notifications. :confused3

First, I completely agree with you on your team assessment. We use the term "family" pretty openly here, but you all really do feel like family to me.

Second, you hit on the exact reasons I had not yet opened a new thread. I intended to start a 2011 thread, or even one without a year marker, before the marathon but did not want to create communication confusion at that point. Perhaps now that we are clearing the marathon period that would be safer.
Opinions people?

Well, I know I brought it up - I think the threads go to 250 pages - You could just un-number this one and we could stay here. Not necessarily the best for getting new people involved, I suppose, but very good for not losing anyone. We are not yet to 80 pages on this thread, so at this rate, we could probably get another year out of this one. I don't know how to decide, except that tradition seems to be that we start a new thread after Marathon Weekend each year.

We were talking at the POP meet about how some teams start a new thread every month! I think we'd lose people constantly under that model. And I think we run the risk now, too. Though there is no reason we can't send PM's to the entire team with the new link and ask if each of us wants to continue another year. Except me. You don't have to ask me, cause I am totally IN for 2011!

Are we really staring our 4th year as a team? Am I miscounting that?

Dale is a creeper??? :scared1:

Richard...I wore leopard for you on Saturday. Must have worked 'cause I beat Al Roker :thumbsup2

I don't have a thread preference. Y'all can't hide from me.

Seriously...this is our 4th year?!?!? It is amazing that random team assignment created a group with so much in common. I was looking for a good Star Trek quote, but the only thing I can think of is the needs of the many quote from when Spock dies ;)

Well said! And I'm one of the family who asked to be here, so I'm quite grateful to have gotten to know all of you too. :)

I say we take the year off the title, and keep going where we are. Someone's got to be different, why not us? :3dglasses

Hello Cousins!

It's great to be back and to have beaten the storm back to NE yesterday afternoon. I'm happy to continue with Team Ohana, you guys rock! I'm cross-posting my race report (with apologies to Corinna and Rose )...this was written for the Princess BL thread, where there are many who have never raced before -- so forgive the over-explanation, please!

I'm not much one for race reports, but here it is -- I woke up at 3am Saturday, and I just knew it was going to go well ::yes:: . I felt healthy, relatively rested, and I had all my gear laid out and ready to go, d-tag (for timing) already on my shoe. Dennis walked me out to the buses (he was doing the Full the next day), and I was off! My bus took the same route as the regular traffic (this was new to me), so we got there a little later than I would have liked. I went out to the bus just before 4, I'll be heading out 20min earlier for Princess. I barely had time to stand through the Port-a-Potty line and then walk down to the race. I was so excited because I had moved up two corrals for my start, which was also making me think this could be a very good day. I should preface all of this by saying I am not a fast runner. My best time at that point was 3:11. I lined up about 6 rows from the start of my corral (F), and in the very front I saw the 3 hr pace team. I really, really wanted to break 3 hours, so I knew that if I could get past them and never see them again, I would do it.

I finally started in Wave 6. I headed out feeling ok, but I was surprised at the number of people I was passing. The first mile is always rough because you're packed almost like sardines, and it's hard to find your space. Anyway, I couldn't see the clock when I started, but I knew I was theoretically about half an hour behind the first Wave. I made it a point to eat my second set of Clif bloks at Mile 2 (I eat a couple before I start), and as usual, I completely missed Mile 4. I know it's there, but I never see it! Anyway, by Mile 5 it was starting to get light and I was close to the MK. I saw some WISHers cheering, and that always gives you a little extra boost. Running right down the middle of Main Street USA is also a big pick me up, not to mention running through the castle! I really didn't think I needed to hit the restrooms, so I skipped it. If you do think you might have to go, I think it's worth making the stop in the MK. But I digress -- I saw plenty of characters on the way to and in the MK, and as you leave Capt. Jack Sparrow is also available for photos...he had quite a line, though!

After MK the entertainment slows down some, but I was happy I was still feeling good. I was having 13 and 14 mile splits, so I could live with that. I also passed one of my Ohana cousins Debra!, which was a big boost for me. She was Goofy last year, and taking it easy this year, and it boosted me to see her since I knew she had started in the corral ahead of me. I kept moving even when I could feel myself slowing, and got my usual boost from seeing ThunderMatt on top of the over pass after Mile 10, waving to everyone and encouraging the WISHers.

I got myself up the overpass (definitely my least favorite part of the race), and made past Mile11. Then this guy wanted me to stop so he could take a picture of the back of my WISH shirt. I told him I wasn't stopping, but he could take a picture. He did, so hopefully it turned out for him. As I was running down the hill, my Ohana cousin Debra! caught up with me to give me last minute encouragement about reaching my goal. Then I ran around the bend and up the last overpass, and then down toward Mile12. I saw my cousin's husband Mark! (who I suspect finished at well under 2 hours), and then kept going into Epcot. I made the loop in Epcot, then I was headed for the finish! I crossed the line, got my Donald medal (as I was waiting for my medal I heard the announcer say, "Here comes the 3 hour pace team" so I knew I made my goal! :woohoo: ), ate an orange, and had a massage. Then it was time to board a bus back to the WL resort.

Here's the part that's not so great. I don't know how this happened, but apparently my d-tag did not record at the 15K split, or the finish, so I don't have an official time. I'm trying to see what I can do about it -- I realize I may not be able to get an official time (although I certainly should show up in the photos at the finish), but I'd like to at least know unofficially how I did so I know what to shoot for to improve even by a couple minutes for Princess. I also want to know how this could have happened, so I can avoid it in the future. I was pretty upset when I went to look up my results online and I don't have a finish time, but I do have a medal and I know I did it....It's really frustrating since this is literally the best race of my life, and I have nothing to prove it. :headache: One of my BL buddies was tracking me, and says at the 10K split I was on target to finish in 2:54, so that is some comfort.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to doing it again next month and figuring out how to have it count! I ran 2M this morning, and I feel really good. Now I want to take off some weight (I think I'm looking at a 3 lb gain after my week in WDW, which I can definitely live with), and do whatever I can to improve. It is clear I need to do more crosstraining, so I'm going to make a real effort to get that going.

DS is home from school today and DH is out blowing away the endless snow which is still falling pretty heavily, so I'm going to go make lunch for my fellas. I will catch up with this and other threads later -- this is my second stop on the DIS!

Now -- DS is also going to be home tomorrow, so that will hinder my posting. I plan to run 3M and catch up on :laundy: I hope you are all set for a great day tomorrow!

Maria :upsidedow

What a great race report! Congrats on beating the pace group and finishing in under three hours! That totally sucks that you didn't get a time from your D-tag though. I'm sure they can find a way to find a time for you. There was a guy at the finish area on Sunday trying to get his Goofy medal with the same problem, and since he walked away with it, I'm sure they figured it out somehow.

It was great meeting you on Monday too. Sorry I didn't have more time to visit with you and the rest of the cousins. I'm glad we at least got the picture taken. I can't wait to see how it turned out. :)

Dale is a creeper??? :scared1:

::yes:: You heard it here first: Dale is a creeper.

I don't know that that particular quote is the one I would have chosen. My personal favorites are:

"Brain and brain. What is brain???"

"No more Blah Blah Blah!"

and

"Spock! We need you! BADLY!!!"

and

"We are looking for the nuclear wessels!"

Whose camera was it that took that photo with all of us? JenB had one, but it was from before you arrived. :confused3 I need to upload my race photos to facebook still, come to think of it. :rolleyes1

You need to email them to me too, please, so I can use them as I finish up my race report. Wednesday and Thursday are done and posted online, but I need more race pictures for the weekend.

OK, John - I have a few I can send. You will have to appeal to Jen for the good corral photos, though. I'm sending them to an address gleaned from facebook. Hopefully that works for you!

Just quickly checking in now that I am home and sort of back to normal. It was great to see so many of you this weekend. I completely agree with feeling lucky to be assigned to this team. We have something special here and I am really grateful for it. :goodvibes

I'd vote for keeping the thread and ditching the year in the title, but don't really care as I will find us wherever we end up.

Maria: I loved the race report, thanks for posting. Hopefully they will figure out your time. The same thing happened to me last year except they missed my start mat and had all of my times as gun time (about 25 min slower). I sent them an email and it did get straightened out. You can always figure out your "real time" by seeing how far off of the clock your 5K split was then subtracting from the time in your finisher photo (if that makes any sense).

I'll try to get a race report of my own together as soon as I dig out from the mountain of work both at work and home.

Great to see everyone and hope the missing cousins will be able to come next year.

I'm having focus issues at work this afternoon... :rolleyes1

Anyone want to make a Pretty Princess tutu?

No Sew Tutu

Put the thread wherever. I think I can find it! But I like John's idea about being different. I'm glad I'm not on one of the teams that changes the thread monthly, and not just for that reason. :thumbsup2

Maria - I'm so glad to hear your timing chip malfunctioned. I was completely freaked out on Saturday when I checked the results and you didn't have a finishing time - I was so worried that something had happened and you weren't able to finish. I'm glad it was simply technical difficulties, and you actually had a terrific race! I hope they can figure it out for you and get you an "official" time, but either way, you know you had a great time. Good luck at the Princess!

Mel - You obviously don't know this cousin very well. Not a domestic bone in my body. Well, I can cook a little. But sew...:rotfl2: And besides, we're still pouting about them changing the date for the Princess. We were all ready to make that our family trip for the year, but no. DD's spring break is the following week, the ORIGINAL date for the Princess, the one on the postcard we picked up at the Indy half. No hard feelings here. Not at all.

Corinna - I will not weigh in on which quote is the best. DH made me watch the entire movie last weekend and quoted each and every line ahead of the characters. His favorite is the one Mel mentioned, so we had a "wait for it" moment as it came along. I think I actually groaned when I read her post. :sad2:

I'm actually hoping I WON'T be at WDW in January next year. Not that I don't want to see all my cousins, but if all goes as planned, all of our travel money will go elsewhere. But then, we're hanging on the whims of a 20-year old, so... :rolleyes1 DD has decided she wants to do a semester abroad, preferably in Ireland. She was trying to work it out for fall semester, but that's proving to be next to impossible, so it's now looking like it may be spring 2012. If she does go, DH and I will more than likely go over for a week or two, maybe even for St. Patty's Day :woohoo:. I tried to work it out so we could run the Dublin Marathon, but it's Oct 31, and it just wasn't working. This is the same child who had her heart set on doing an internship in Indianapolis, but then decided even before they turned her down that it was too far away. And now she wants to go to Ireland. Go figure.

Jackie
