Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

John - I a soooo afraid you are right about the extended possibility of hot weather. At least it has been "cooler" the last two days. Of course by cooler I mean upper 90's with slightly less humidity. :rotfl2:

Don't be so pessimistic. It's supposed to cool off tonight and only be 72 when we wake up tomorrow morning for our daily run. ;)

Maria - thanks for the roll call. :thumbsup2
I'm still here, just haven't felt up to posting. I'm just able to do a few minutes of running before 1 or more of my 3 injuries act up. Nothing is painful, just tweak-y, but I'm too nervous to push it. I'm just so frustrated with taking it easy and not running. And I feel like I can't plan on any races, which is also bumming me out a bit. I'm doing some new physical therapy stuff now and still walking about 10-15 miles a week. So it feels like things are finally improving. Hopefully I can actually do some training soon.

Corinna - your trip sounds amazing and exhausting! Hope your little guy is feeling better.

Nicole - Thanks so much - my 7 year old is feeling much, much better now. We're still struggling through some of the jet-lag, but the stomach/fever thing is totally resolved, thank goodness.

I don't blame you for not wanting to push it with your trifecta of injuries. Better safe than sorry. I hope the new physical therapy does the job and I'm impressed you're still walking that much in a week - that's a solid time commitment!

Maria - I really am barely able to catch my breath before DL - it's crazy nutso, I tell you. I feel like there's still a basic level of fatigue going on, so I actually didn't even do today's run. I'm not out to do anything in Disneyland but finish and have a good time, so when I felt kind of tired and like my ankle was a bit tweaky this morning, I decided that discretion would be the better part of valor today.

Fortunately or unfortunately, my kids are starting school next week - one on Tuesday, the other on Wednesday. I think it will be good to have them back in their school routine - we can only take a certain amount of unstructured time before things devolve into the boys annoying each other for entertainment.

Richard- I don't know when things will settle down for me, if ever, but that is OK - it's better to be busy than bored, I always figure!

It's amazing that you (Mr. Jungle Shorts!) are so serious and dignified in real life! :)

As for the chiropractor....I couldn't manage without mine. I've got some history (torticolis, scoliosis etc.) that means I really have to stay on top of my alignment and muscles or I end up with problems. That being said, I have discovered that there are some great chiropractors out there, there are some that are OK, and there are some that seem to do the same adjustments on every person who walks in the door. I suspect your coaches know a few good ones!

AFM - I spent the day helping a friend try to sort out her son's Lego collection. I constructed most of Jabba's Sail Barge and the sarlacc pit today. Many of the larger pieces were intact, thank goodness, so it was more like a repair job with a good bit of part-hunting as well. Any LEGO fans in the group? I'm not really, but it seems like I am surrounded by fans in real life, so I thought I'd ask here as well. :thumbsup2

Woohoo!, I'll break out the cold weather gear, John!

Corinna - Whoa there! It's a long way between calling me respectable and dignified! You do always seem so busy, but I agree better busy than bored! Thanks for the input on the chiropractor, knowing so many that have seen one and given me positive input is definitely making me feel better about going to see one.

AFM - I had an email come in yesterday with the opportunity to register late for the Wine and Dine half marathon, and being the runner I am...I registered. I am hoping this becomes a getaway weekend with Darcy joining me. If she chooses not to come, it'll have to be just me visiting with the cousins.

Having never been other than at New Year's, I guess I'll have to try to figure out how to cram in a MNSSHP, Food and Wine, a half marathon, at least one roller coaster-ish ride, and who knows what else into this weekend-ish trip. Time to plan...:surfweb:

Too exciting! We are staying at BWV in a one bedroom--I kept meaning to throw that out there in case anyone likes to freeze their drinks. We freeze our water and gatorade. We are happy to share our fridge/freezer.:goodvibes

Our plans are to go to the Boma meet on Friday--I think there are still spots, Saturday to take it kind of easy--DHS in the morning and a nap or pool in the afternoon, Sunday we're having a late lunch with DS before we stick him on ME back to the airport and back to college, Sunday night at Jellyrolls, and Monday at MK to see the new parade. We debated the Halloween party, and decided to skip it this year (we went last year) and go again next year. We go home late Tuesday. If anyone wants to join us, just let me know. We're up for company!

Jackie: How's your hip doing? It bites to have to cancel a race, but you're right to keep your focus on the brass ring, or the full bling as the case may be.

Richard: :worship: to the man who makes the big bucks...decisions, that is. Such power would terrify me. Of course, if you're responsible enough to be moderate during tax-free weekend, I think your work can trust you.

How's your arm/shoulder? I have no experience with chiropractors, so I'm of absolutely no help. Y'all know that I don't like people touching me. :rotfl2:

CONGRATS on registering for the Wine & Dine. Did you sign up for a wait list? I'll be happy to cheer you on. That's an ambitious list you got going on, especially if you're running. Hmmm, given that I'd have to suggest bagging the late night on a Friday MNSSHP in favor of a Sunday, if you're staying Sunday night. Saturday is definitely a take-it-easy kind of afternoon. Do you have travel dates yet?

Rose: Great idea to do JellyRolls...I'll see if DOOD is up to it. He's joining me for the weekend only, and is already a cranky-pants about my erratic planned schedule. OTOH, he's repeatedly said how much he enjoys WISHer time, so it's a definite possibility.

Your times for your 1/2 are looking EXCELLENT, and I'm really impressed with you and Mike barreling ahead in your stormy LR.

Corinna: Welcome back – you've been missed. Your trip, and its runs, sound absolutely delightful. Except for DS's mysterious illness, of course. I just assumed you'd be doing the Wine & Dine...don't know why. It does sound lie your traveling/summer schedule was pretty hectic and I don't doubt you've got some fatigue going on – physical and mental. LOVE the Legos! Did you know they're building a Legoland at the old Cypress Gardens?

John: Ugh, ugh and sticky ugh for your weather. I couldn't do it, really. But you keep relentlessly moving forward. What's on your fall agenda? Running-wise and fun-wise!

Nicole: Ohh, I know how frustrating and disheartening it can be. I hope you get some answers soon, and can in the meantime hold onto your long-term goals and how PT and walking are playing into those. Are you going to WDW for the Food & Wine?

Maria: Are you planning a royal entourage as part of your Princess arrangements? Or a costume? I tell you, I do obsess about the costumes these days. I figure if I can't be fast I might as well be entertaining. I'm desperately missing my sci-fi & television in general. I get to watch TV on my XT days at the gym, but can't catch much fictionalized shows except for USA. I've discovered a love for White Collar and Covert Affairs, as they run constantly.

AFM: Just lots of writing before the start of the academic school year. Some planning for the Food & Wine Festival. No movies in weeks. :scared1:
Although I read a great little novel, Jasper Fforde's Shades of Grey. Like your fantastical, slightly wacky dystopian novels? Reminds me a bit of Douglas Adams or Tom Robbins.

And I've been running outside & even enjoying it. Transitioning to the fall schedule but not in training. This year isn't the year for training apparently, what with job stressors, so I'm glad we've pulled back to the half for January. I'm just going to keep plugging along for a while, using the running primarily as stress relief.

Wow. My 20-year-old self can't believe I said that instead of reaching for a vodka on the rocks. :lmao:

Maria: thanks for asking us to check in, yes I'm here

I apologize for not responding to individuals but I'll just give the brief update on myself. Pretty much all of our friends kids have birthdays in July and Aug so we have very little free time on weekends as we run from party to party.... Not great for the diet. We have had a string of losses in our family over the past two weeks with my paternal grandmother dying 2 weeks ago and my maternal grandfather dying last night. It's been tough but we are hanging in.

I have been training for DL and look forward to going to that race to get away for a bit. DL will be a training run for the Philia RnR half on the 19th of Sept where I hope to run a decent time. Then we are doing the Wine and Dine and starting Goofy training.

I hope to get back to regular posting soon.

Jen - So sorry for your loss  I know that has to be especially tough to go through two deaths so close together. Just keep hanging in there.

Debra - I did sign up for the Wine and Dine wait list a couple of weeks ago on a whim, and got an email just the other day saying that a spot had come open for me, so on impulse I registered (actually it said I had to register that day, which I did; the next day I got an email stating that I had until 8/31 to register ;) ). I'm still working on travel dates, and that might vary depending on Darcy coming (which is 50-50 at the moment), but am tentatively thinking to fly in late Thursday/early Friday and leave late Sunday/Monday. Given the already haphazard "planning" of this trip, I fully expect to cram the maximum possible into this trip starting with the Friday night party, Food and Wine and Wine and Dine run on Saturday (aka the Food and Wine and Dine plan!) and whatever else I can squeeze in on Sunday. I figure I can always sleep after I get home.:rotfl:

Stress relief running vs. vodka, hmm...an interesting choice, and one where I would most often agree these days, so I know what you mean on this one. How about a nice pre-race Ginger Ale instead? (of course, since you are not running you can still go the vodka route if you prefer).

Shades of Grey sounds like interesting reading.

Rose - Looking forward to meeting you and I'd love to take you up on the offer of company (especially if Darcy bows out on me), if not also the freezer space. ;)

Corinna - Good luck on the school start, I got to ask my oldest this year how it was to not have a first day of school...the look she gave me was priceless as she was preparing to head to work. :rotfl:
I have a suspicion you are right on life not settling down soon, I am well-known for keeping my proverbial plate full, and you always sound like you are off on some adventure as well.
I had completely forgotten about the jungle shorts! Time to dig into the running gear drawer and find those for Disney. I believe the last time I wore them was for my half PR this past February.

John - I have to admit you were right on the weather breaking a bit. I actually felt an occasional cool breeze on my bike this morning, and I really mean cool--not the "not hot" breezes we get in summer that almost seem cool--but actual cool breezes. Then it warmed up after that :rolleyes1 .

AFM - The first chiro trip went OK, and I will be back on Monday for some follow-up work. The doc thinks I will be able to get past my main problem in the shoulder in a couple of weeks, which I really hope means that I will be able to do the Austin Olympic distance tri on Labor Day (should be close on his estimation). My knee generally seems to be healing, though slowly, and I have been improving my technique as I experiment with the KT Tape to help prevent reinjury. Tomorrow (assuming it feels OK in the morning) will be my first real long run since August 1. Just to be safe I'll be going back to the run-walk method of running that I trained so long to get away from, but at least it will be real running again.:yay:

Jen - I'm so sorry to hear about losing two of your grandparents so close together. I'm sure it's tough, and I'm glad you're hanging in there okay. If I don't run into you at DL, I hope you have a great race and enjoy a weekend away to take your mind off things.

Debra - You're right. Ugh is pretty much the best way to describe this summer's weather and training in that weather. At our long run yesterday, it was about 5 degrees cooler and 20% less humidity than it has been, and we all had the best run we've had all summer. Of course, today's back to normal. Ugh.

Corinna - I've always been a huge Lego fan. I had thousands of pieces when I was a kid and gave them to my nephews when they got old enough to use them. I even know a woman who graduated from Purdue with an engineering degree and went to work for F.A.O. Schwartz designing the giant Lego displays in their New York store.

AFM - I'm looking forward to escaping the Houston summer and enjoying a nice weekend. at DLR. Not going to run the race for time; I'm only after the Coast to Coast medal. :) My other fall running plans include the San Antonio marathon and maybe Dallas in December. My fun-wise agenda is a lot more exciting. I've been out sailing again for the first time in a long time, and it's so nice to get out on the water. We finished 4th in the regatta two weeks ago (and won a bottle of rum!) and came in 10th last night. One more fun one of these to go before the 150-mile Harvest Moon race from Seabrook to Corpus Christi in October. After that, we're off to Cancun for a week. Last time I was there I got stuck for an extra week by Hurricane Wilma, which sounds great except we had no power or water for 8 of the 14 days we were there. As Debra says, Ugh! ;)

I won't be at the WISH meet at DLR on Friday (plane gets in too late), but I hope to see Corinna, Jen, and anyone else running at some point during the weekend.

Yay...lots of Ohanaites at W&D. Who wants to be in charge of keeping me awake during the race?

Mel, are you planning on wear the leopard print? Just curious... ;)

I always end up volunterring for far too many things, but if you want to run by me I'll be happy to wake you up every half mile or so along the run.

Just a quit posting for two items:

1. I'm trying to finish up my hotel hunting for the W&D trip and when I asked for the All-Stars, they came back with All Star Music. Since I know pretty much nothing about the All Star Resorts, I said "sure!" In any case, I am sure I will be happy (or at least make do) for this short trip.

2. Today is the tenth birthday for my youngest, adopted, girl. Yes, today Coco is 10. Just for fun here is a photo from earlier this year when I was trying to head out to the gym and she snuck into my car alongside of my workout bag.

Good luck to everyone who is running at DL!

Richard--cute picture. Glad your knee and shoulder are improving.:goodvibes

Jen--I'm so sorry about you grandparents.

Mike and I are tapering for our race this weekend and really tapering is torture! I didn't work out Friday and by Saturday afternoon I was climbing the walls. I went to the Y for a quick hop on the elliptical and felt better once I was nice and sweaty! Sunday we did 6, monday I did strength, yesterday we ran 4, today is an off day, thursday 30 minutes, friday off, saturday race. It's supposed to be in the 50s for the start!!!!! I am so excited. Last night when we ran it was 90 at 7:00pm! I have no idea how fast I can run in the 50s! The plan is to take it easy for the first 6 and then go from there. It's a pretty small race, but they are using chip timing. I'm getting very excited!

I wanted to take a minute to thank you all for being so welcoming, especially with the conversation going on about changing how they put people on WISH teams. It's hard to be the new person, but I have felt very welcomed! I'm really looking forward to meeting folks at W&D!

Happy birthday Coco! Hope she gets lots of treats and goodies to celebrate.

You'll be fine at All-Star Music, at least for W&D. The lines for the buses back to the resort after the half in January were horrendous, though not too bad after the full. Given that W&D is smaller with better weather, I think you won't have to worry about long lines.

I can be persuaded. It'll be dark anyway...don't think anyone will notice :)

What would be the fun if nobody noticed? I just ran across mine recently while doing some cleaning out of my dresser, and I will plan to bring them along with the hope that a certain teammate won't leave me hangng out on that limb all alone.

John - Oh yeah, I remember that bus wait. Fortunately, I was waiting for the OKW bus while I was fighting off hypothermia following the the half last January. I don't remember the wait on the bus for POR the next day being quite so bad, but then again it wasn't so cool as to force me back on the bus immediately afterwards afterwards that day.

Rose - Aww, thanks! Looking forward to seeing you next month.

FIL Update - He keeps improving physically. Mentally he may be back to normal, more or less.

The buses were the worst part. I think I wanted to cry.

Rose...good luck this weekend! Sounds like the weather will be perfect.

Richard...glad to hear your FIL is doing better. Happy Birthday to Coco!

Debra...have you read the Hunger Games trilogy? Very dystopian. I'm concerned I read too much teen fiction, but right now, it's a nice counter-balance to teaching students to read clinical drug studies.

Good luck to everyone at DL!! Can't wait to hear all about it.

I gave up waiting for the AS-S bus because I was freezing and hopped into the shortest line no matter where it would take me. I then called my wife to come and get me at wherever I ended up. Beach Club, I think. And you're right, Sunday was fine and not cold at all. I was in no hurry to get back on the bus then.

This sounds like it should be part of a "you know it's cold when...." series.:goodvibes

:rotfl:

Hope everyone is having a good weekend! We ran on Saturday. So my time for my first 1/2 is 2:24:55.:goodvibes It was a really small race, but very well ran. Water and porta potties at every mile. Luckily I did not need the porta pottie--I'm sure only because I had wipes in the pocket of my running skirt just in case! The temp was perfect--53. The wind was a little stronger than I would have liked--10mph with 20mph gusts. We have had no wind all summer--just heat, so the wind was a little hard on me. I hit a brick wall right about mile 12. So the last 1.1 was pretty bad, but except for water stops I ran the whole thing!:goodvibes I posted a race report on the BL thread with pictures--it's on page 20 if anyone wants to read it. I was a lot more emotional at the finish than I thought I would be. It's still sinking in that I actually finished!

Anyhow, hope everyone at DL had a great race! Can't wait to hear about it! And all you cousins headed for F&W--it's almost here! Can you believe it?:goodvibes

The DL half was great! Well, at least the parts of it that were in the parks or in the Angels baseball stadium. The rest of the course was dull and boring. Great spectator/cheerleader/band support all the way along, though. Plus, I got to meet Corinna and Jen B after the finish. Nice to be able to put faces with the names from here. :)

Here's a picture from during the race.

Spectacular photo, John! How was the race? Were there problems at the start?
