Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

With apologies to Rose, who I know has read this on the BL thread -- I'm running again! My dad flew home this morning, and I ran 10M! It felt great to move again -- even if it was ridiculously hot. I'm looking forward to getting regular with my runs again, and I am determined to get some time on the exercise bike and actually use the free weights. I have 6 weeks before our vacation, and I want to hit the ground healthy and feeling good! :goodvibes:

Hey cousins... sorry that the DisBoards have not been my hang out spot lately. Man, I need to get better with this so I can stay motivated. As you all know... had a baby in January... walk/ran the Minneapolis 1/2 Marathon in June... and well now is when I say I need to get some running in. I have been exercising the bare minimum since the kids are out of school and it is so blasted hot outside!!!

My goals... lose this baby weight NOW, then get ready for WDW 1/2 marathon. I hope to hit a 5 or 10K in between all of that. I am also vacationing in WDW in August and CAN'T wait for a break!!!!

I know I say this everytime... but I will try to keep up better. I am friends with several of you on Facebook so at least I am not totally lost!!!

Hello Cousins!

I am back from my cousin's wedding in The Black Hills of South Dakota. It's been a wild ride this summer, I tell you. My weight is up, my running is down, but still I persevere.

In the middle of this trip, we got a call from my BIL who said my SIL was in the hospital - Colon Cancer. She had a 5 hour surgery last week and is still recovering from it in the hospital. I haven't heard any talk about what stage she's in or what the prognosis is, but she seems to be recovering well at this point, at least.

Richard - your long bike ride sounds delightful and...well....long! Seriously, 3 hours on one of those bike seats? :worship:

Rose - Congratulations on all 5 parts! Hills are no joke, but they do make you stronger! When I started, I was scared to run in the neighborhood - it is all hills and I have to run up one or two just to get away from my house. After running most of my runs on hills the past few years now, I actually love it when they show up in a race because the muscles work differently on hills and so it's like a weird sort of break. :confused3

Maria - great that you're back to running - these family visits can be great, but also disruptive to our regular stuff! It won't take long for you to be up to speed again, I'm sure!

Jen - the weather and kids home from school certainly makes things harder. I am always amazed by how much harder it is to get these things done in the summer - the inertia that must be overcome is about 5 times more than we ever face during the school year!

I am glad we see each other sometimes on facebook!!!

Mel - So sorry I missed your birthday! I hope it was a happy one!

As for me:

I have a few pictures to share from my run/hike/climb/walk in Custer State Park:

This was a wonderful morning, a bit of personal time and peace in the midst of a busy family-filled weekend. It's a gift that has come with the weight loss and increase in activity, something I never would have experienced just a few short years ago. :cloud9:

Good Morning, Cousins!

Corinna -- Awesome photos! And did I mention Sylvan Lake is absolutely gorgeous? What a great time to be out on your own, reflecting, it just looks so peaceful! :goodvibes

Jen -- I am so impressed you are doing so much postpartum! I won't tell you how little I moved after ds was born...but I was almost literally a different person then. It is always great to hear from you!

Richard -- An "easy" 3 hr bike ride?! Is there such a thing? I think by definition that's gotta be a challenge! :thumbsup2 Wow, you are really an athlete with multiple skills! :yay:

Shoutouts to all the other cousins, I know you are busy running, working, and crosstraining! Not to mention all those life events and family obligations...

AFM: (cross post, sorry Lean Ones) So to recap -- Last Tues: dinner at Chili's went well. I ate one (count it!) chip and had Margherita grilled chicken, which was basically a chicken breast on some rice and beans. Wed: More office laps, eating pretty well, still too many treats at home. Thurs: Took dad to L.L. Bean flagship store in Maine. I had hummus, tomatoes and cucumbers for lunch. Then I had a ton of flavored tootsie rolls and a mint aero bar after dinner Fri: took my dad to Patriot's Place -- Patriots Hall of Fame (yes, the football team) and had lunch at Red Robin. This was the first time I've eaten there, probably should be the last. Sat: hung out in the backyard with my dad, ate off the grill but also had Dunkin Donuts and treats from the local Italian bakery. Sun: Sent dad back to Missouri, did 10M, ate really well and felt good. Mon: did 4M and ate really well. Eyes still having a ton of discharge, soreness, and even burning.

I'm officially giving up on my eyes fixing themselves after the week of medicine. I see the opthamologist tomorrow. Best case scenario will probably be another week w/out the contacts. I'm considering trying to run and tucking my glasses into a hairband. I'm that desperate to be moving...

I wanted to run this AM, but I couldn't get out of bed until 6:30, and even that wasn't easy. I was asleep by 9 last night, I think this heat is really taking it out of me.

I'd like to say I'll do some exercise when I get home, but the odds are not good...

Maria :upsidedow

Corinna: Sorry to hear about your SIL. I hope she is doing ok and they get good news from the surgeon. Your pictures are absolutely beautiful!

Rose: I loved your post, the not killing DH comment really made me laugh :rotfl:

Richard: :worship:

Jen: Great to see you around here again.

Maria: I hope your eyes are improving.

Mel: Enjoy Disney :goodvibes

We had a great trip. We visited my in-laws for a few days and went to the beach. Fortunately no oil globs on their local beach in Sarasota. I got in a few hot, sweaty runs while we were there but 5 miles felt more like 13 in the heat and humidity. Disney was fantastic! The new summer fireworks were amazing and watching my DD's eyes light up seeing the Main Street Electrical Parade was really fun. We found a great viewing spot for the parade in Frontierland where there were no crowds and the floats and characters all came up to her and made a fuss over her-- she was thrilled. We spent tons of time at our resort pool and even took afternoon naps so we could do late hours at MK without DH or DD melting down. I got in a few more runs during the trip but they were pretty short.

Training for DL is officially on. I'm actually training for the Philia Rock n Roll Half and the DL half is one of my long runs in that training. I'm trying a new training program and focusing a bit more on speed-- I'll let you know how it turns out for me.

Maria :upsidedow

By easy I mean an easy pace to maintain a heart rate in the aerobic range, I was certainly working to finish up by the end of three hours.

Great news on the eye front! Basically, my contacts are antiquated. I'm going to get fitted for new ones, and I have a few other things to do for my eyes. But, I can wear them while I work out until I get new ones!

I did run 4M after work Tues., and 6M yesterday morning. Nothing yet today, but you never know!

DS is having a sleepover Friday night, so I won't be doing my LR Saturday, I'll move it to Sunday instead. More of dh's relatives want to come visit Sunday -- I love Dennis, but his relatives....well, I'm sure he says the same thing about mine! We haven't had a weekend to ourselves as a family since the beginning of June, so next weekend I am declaring us a visitor-free zone.

Maria :upsidedow

Corinna--thanks for sharing the pictures.:goodvibes So beautiful!

Maria--glad your eyes are getting better.:goodvibes

Glad the beach was clean. I would love to see the Electrical Parade. I think we saw something similar at DL in the late 80s early 90s when we lived in San Diego. I love the nighttime parades. And it's always so nice to find a spot where it's not crowded.:)

We took our long run this morning and it stunk. I guess we're going to have to get up even earlier if it doesn't cool off soon. We got to the park at 6:15 and it was 76 and humid. At 9:15 when we left it was 86 in the shade and yucky. I was tired to start and I probably should have just stayed in bed. At about 8.5, I was just done. We ended up run/walking the last couple and finished with 11.2, with warm up and cool down--13.6. I'm still at that point where I'm so new to the really long runs, that I'm having a hard time believing I can do this, and that it's not always going to be this hard. Not very rational thinking. About a half mile before we started walking I was crying. Mike did not realize this until I told him later. It just plain stunk! Praying for a bit cooler temps next week, or at least clouds. The 76 wasn't too bad, but once the sun came up it was brutal. Makes even 86 feel worse.

Sorry to be a debby downer today. I'm proud that I went out and did it, but disappointed that it was so hard and our time was so bad. Hope everyone is doing well. :goodvibes

Just finishing your long runs is really what is important. Pushing through the hot weather and tough conditions is great for building mental toughness, and at the end of the day, that's what will get you through a marathon or half marathon. By the time race day rolls around, physical preparation and fitness aren't an issue. It's being able to keep your mind focused on the task at hand when you're tired and drained that will get you to the finish line.

Hi cousins...I am typing one handed while holding a sleeping/crabby baby, so my apologies for making this short.

This past week I was debating whether I wanted to do a local 5K. I knew it would be a little one (they all are here) and we have so few the way it is. Since we were having lots of rain, I decided to wait. Then Emma (9 yo) found out last night that I was planning to do it and asked if she could. Then Kate (7 yo) wanted to do it just because Emma was. Well Kate gets lazy and I was afraid she would throw a fit halfway through. So after some tantrums I gave in to her. Fast forward to this morning.... Laurel didn't sleep well Friday night night and Paul and I were up a lot. Then at 5-ish in the morning a huge storm rolled in. So I got up and checked the weather channel to see what was up. The storm (wind and all) stopped just before 7am so I got the kids ready and we were off. The race was just down the road so we were ok. Checked in and got our t-shirts, then we waited for the start. There were maybe 150 people, including other kids. We started off and Kate instantly had a meltdown. Oh man! This continued for the first half until I threatened to call Paul (dad) and have him meet us at the trail head where we turned around. That was all she needed to get a second wind and take off. Rain started up about 2/3's into it. Even though the rain was light, we were pretty wet at the end. We ran across the finish line holding hands. I was so proud of my girls.

Oh and I lost 2 more pounds only to find them again when the free nachos at Paul's work party got the best of me!!!!

Jen: Great job on a 5k with 2 kids in tow. Kudos to the kids for finishing and to you for being cheerleader through it. My lost pounds are also very good at finding their way back to me again. I have gained and lost the same 2-3 for a while now. Still down a bit better then 20lbs but can't seem to get any further.

Rose: Great job toughing it out through a hard run. Training in the heat is just awful. I admit I wimp out and use the TM in the basement--- much cooler and better for my sanity.

Mel: Hope you are enjoying vacation.

I am in the midst of planning my DD's 7th birthday party this weekend. Got all the stuff together to make the cake and goodies over the next day or two (hopefully even more pounds won't find me after all of this). This is "birthday season" for us. My DH's birthday in a week after DD's and all of our friends kids were born in Aug so we have a party of some sort every weekend for a while.

Trying to get in my runs for DL and really excited for trip-- finding the time is tough but I'm trying to only look a few days ahead so I don't get too overwhelmed.

Hi cousins, I've been MIA for awhile. Work has been insane, and I've felt like I don't have much to add from a training or race perspective. I've been following your posts, though, and wanted to pop in to say hi and give an update.

I've been successful at maintaining my weight, but I've only been getting in short walks and even shorter runs. It's strange, it's like nothing I do can get me comfortable in my body (walking or running) - do I just have terrible joints? Have I developed awful form in the past few months? Something is always hurting - knee, foot, ankle, hip. I was so blessed in my training last year and leading up to the Princess half - I had no injuries or trouble spots. I don't know what to treat or what action (or rest) to take because it's not often the same thing that hurts day to day. I don't think I'm favoring anything, because nothing really hurts - just uncomfortable or achy. I keep taking my training down a notch, even switched to walking only, but sitting on a couch is about the next step down from where I'm at! *sigh* I really miss running.

I'm about at the stage where I guess I should see a doctor, but I'm not even sure what to call my "injuries." I'm worried it will just be an expensive wild goose chase to determine the problem.

AFM--We ran a 4 mile charity race on Saturday. I was hoping for under 40, but ended up at 40:49. Today we took our long run and I'm happy to say it was much better than last week. We kept an eye on the heartrate monitor the entire time and that really helped keep the pace down. We finished 12, running very slowly the entire way.:goodvibes Our temps here were around 70 this morning when we started at 6:20, so it made for a nice long run.:goodvibes Of course then I needed a nap, because I hate getting up at 5:30! DH is mapping out our schedule for the next 8 weeks or so. We are running a half on Sept 4 and W&D in October. I think I might be going to the gym just a little bit too much (haven't taken a day off since last Sunday) so I'm hoping a plan will help me keep from overtraining.

Hope everyone is doing well. :)

Hey Cousins!

I think I'm way behind here...guess I'll just jump in. I had company every weekend in July except for this last one, so I'm sort of burnt out on seeing other people...I know, that doesn't sound right, but it's true. I guess it's true to say I'm burnt out on seeing Dennis's relatives...at least the ones who drive me

I did 6M Thursday night, 6M Friday morning and 10M Saturday, and took yesterday off. I plan to do 4M after work today. I need to make a new training schedule for August and September, just haven't gotten to it yet. I do know I'm running 10M on Christmas Eve, don't want to do it Christmas Day (my normal Saturday!).

Started school shopping for ds, we plan to do some every weekend until he starts. It's less daunting that way -- shorter spurts mean quicker in and outs, and less people losing their tempers -- and that could be any one of us as we get frustrated for one reason or another. Dennis and ds are both non-shoppers, so it's pretty easy for someone to decide they've had enough!

I just booked the rental car for our Universal vacation at the end of summer. Now I need to go online and get tickets for Dennis and ds. I have an AP, so I'm good! I was so pleased with the AP rate for an onsite hotel -- just about what I'd pay for a mod in January at Disney, and the Loews Hotels are really comfortable. Plus, we love being able to walk to the parks -- in this heat, it's going to be nice to be able to come and go with ease.

Have I been disowned yet? :wave:Hi 'Ohana teammates. It has been months since I have read or posted on this thread. I think I have missed a lot including new additions to our team.
I was only able to read the last five pages…hope to keep more current in the next few months

Mike and I are planning on doing the Wine and Dine in October and then will most likely be at Marathon Weekend in Jan. I haven’t signed up for anything yet but am definitely considering going Goofy again this year. I made a training schedule that starts at the end of August. Hopefully that will keep me on track for January.

Corinna – How is your DL training going so far? One day I want to do that race. It just is on a bad weekend for us. Can’t be traveling the day before school starts.
Thanks for sharing your pictures from Custer State Park. It looks like a beautiful place for a run.

Nicole – Very cool that you had your meeting at the Jim Henson studios. Congrats on the weight maintenance. I’m sorry that you haven’t been able to figure out exactly what is wrong. Could it be your shoes? Or the summer heat and humidity? I hope you start feeling better soon.

Richard – :thumbsup2Great job on your Y freedom tri race! You greatly improved your time from last year. Will you be at Wine and Dine?

Rose – Welcome to ‘Ohana! I hope I get to meet you at the Wine and Dine. Are you planning on doing the relay or half marathon? My DH, Mike, and I are doing the relay.

Debra – Glad that we’ll get to see you at W & D in Oct. It was so nice of you and DOOD to be out there :cheer2:cheering during the Princess race…it really was nice to see so many friendly faces on the course.
I stayed at ASMu for the Princess. It’s not really that bad. Just think of all the money you are saving…more to spend at food and wine festival. You got a great deal!
Congrats to DOOD on becoming an Associated Professor.

Jackie – I hope you are feeling better . Did I read that you are doing MCM this year? I’ll be there cheering…Mike will be running it again this year.

Maria – I hope your eyes are feeling better. Enjoy your Universal vacation. We went for the first time last summer and had a great time. The girls would love to see Harry Potter world. Looking forward to hearing all about HP when you return.

JenB – Congrats on the weight loss! I’m jealous of your planned trip to DL. I hope your tooth issues have been resolved and you are feeling better. Happy Birthday to your DD. Hope the party went well.

Jen – Congrats on the 5K with DDs. I’m amazed at what you have been doing since Laurel was born. I wish I would have had that kind of determination after having my DDs.

:sunny:Happy August to everyone!

Have I been disowned yet? :wave:Hi 'Ohana teammates.
Richard – Will you be at Wine and Dine?

Hi Kathy, no you have not been forgotten and certainly not disowned. :grouphug:

As, to Wine and Dine...:rolleyes1...I hesitate to say, but I just might be swinging a quick (budget-minded) stop in WDW in my travel schedule.

I keep pooping in to peek at the team thread here, but never seem to have much time to comment. My office is currently undergoing its annual financial audit--yes, the fun never stops--which I generally liken to dental surgery, but without the benefit of anesthesia or the short timespan. ;) Still, it is a necessary part of handling public money in operating a local government agency.

My personal plans include a sprint triathlon this coming weekend (500 yard swim/14 mile bike/3.5 mile run) as part of my training for the Longhorn Half Ironman this October.

Take care all!
:grouphug:

Good Morning, Cousins!

I did run 4M after work yesterday, but I forgot my yoga clothes today, so I'll have to do 30 min on the exercise bike when I get home. I'm very irritated with myself, we haven't had yoga in a month, and now I have to miss it :headache:

Richard - The spring triathalon sounds like fun! I know you are really looking forward to the Longhorn Ironman! :cool2:

Kathy -- Great to see you posting! You might want to check the Disney website, I think Goofy is 60% full, and I believe the Half is at 75%. I'd hate for you to plan for it and then not be able to get in! Wine & Dine sounds like so much fun, maybe someday! :thumbsup2

Anyone watching "Haven"? What do you think? How about the twist on "Eureka"? I probably shouldn't be asking since I haven't watched this week's episode yet, but hopefully I'll catch up soon. My problem is it's Shark Week (the most wonderful time of the year :santa:), and that is all my ds wants to watch. I am looking forward to the crossover episodes with "Warehouse 13" and "Eureka". I'm sure I won't get to catch up until this weekend, but it should be good. Anyone watching "Being Human"?

I finally read the latest Plum, and I have the new Diesel on order at the library. I have the new Maryjanice Davidson Undead and Unfinished waiting for me to read at home.

I guess that sums up my sci fi watching, other than to say ds and I both really enjoyed this season of Dr. Who, and we have officially accepted the new Dr. without any reservations! :yay:

And in race news, I *think* I may be able to do the Princess, it seems our family plans keep changing....:confused3

Do be careful about getting registered, people, if you are not. I have a friend who missed out on Wine and Dine by waiting one day too long to try to register and is really bummed out by it.

Maria - I kind of like the Eureka change, though wonder if they plan to do a "Bobby Ewing" style sequence and reverse it later on. I am generally liking the style of the new Doctor, though DW says she just doesn't quite connect with him like the last two.

Okay folks, I'm back after the last trip in "the summer of work travel," and am I glad. I'm hoping for a little stability here for a couple of months. But stability isn't my strong suit. :rotfl2:

I *should* be catching up on work and starting my next project, but I'm not. I even turned down two editing jobs as I'm strung out. So I thought I'd catch up here before moving on to the next big thing...won't pretend I can catch up, so just a couple of shout-outs...

Richard: How is your FIL? I've been thinking about all your WOs/events recently, especially in the midst of our heat wave. I just want to curl up in a dark, cool cave, so....:worship: SOOOO sorry to hear about the annual financial audit. I'd compare it to a much more invasive, painful physical procedure. But polite company forbids it. I think. :confused3

Rose: Random thought...you know hills are big when they're named. And I can only imagine the names they're called when you're moving all uphill. :lmao: Congrats on doing your longest run in those conditions & on letting DH live. (And then persevering in the next run – what John so eloquently said.)

Maria: I've said it before, I'll reiterate. You've been rocking everything this entire year! I was relieved to hear that it was a problem with your contacts and not your eyes. Whew. You ARE going to give us the skinny on Wizarding World of Harry Potter, right? Must get my pop culture fix from someone – can you believe I haven't watched TV in weeks? The horror.

Jen: I've been MIA too, but it's nice to know we can call 'Ohana home. Your fall plans sound spot on for great success in January! Plus, you're doing so well balancing a new baby (sometimes literally), work, and your fitness goals.

Corinna: Belated well wishes and continuing good thoughts for your SIL, BIL and family. What sad news, and I hope the prognosis is good. As for your travels, your travels always look like so much fun and so healthy! Woo hoo! I'd be happy to tag along some time.

JenB: I'm so happy you, Butch, and DD got to go to Sarasota & visit WDW to experience MSEP! It's a favorite of mine, and I was doing the happy dance when they announced an extended run. It looks like you have a busy, busy late summer/fall schedule for races! :cool1: How was DD's birthday party? IIRC, you throw the coolest parties!

Nicole: Oh, It sounds like your body is just rebelling against you. I wish I had some advice, but all I know is that my body dislikes certain seasons intensely and gives me lots of phantom pains during the summer. Is it possible the unusual weather (assume you're hit too) is affecting you? I do think a doctor could help, even with unspecified aches and pains, but since I avoid them I don't feel entirely comfortable recommending you go to one...:rotfl2:

Kathy: I'm so stoked that I'll get to see you at W&D. I'm bummed that I'm not running, that was a hard decision, but maybe I'll register for the party. All the fun, none of the prep. :upsidedow

As for me: One, or two, too many trips this summer. All for work for me or DOOD. (And when one of us works, the other assists.) The latest was in Stratford, to see several Shakespeare plays. And visit with my ILs. In a B&B, with close quarters. I'm glad to be home with a semi-stable schedule approaching.

That means I need to get serious about running, eating, and training now. I've been a slug, haven't hit over 3 miles in weeks. So glad I didn't sign up for DL this year, although I sulked about it. The heat just makes me mitchy.
So no W&D half, and no 5K. I just balk at the price for Disney 5Ks. Although that medal looks cute....

Sorry I have not update this, he is healing slowly but steadily. He has resumed some of his work duties, and is stubborn enough to do some of his outside tasks, but smart enough not to push too hard. He got scheduled for arthroscopic repair to his foot ligaments from where the tank rolled over his foot/leg. Things are looking up for him. Thanks so much for asking and for everyone who has been thinking of and praying for him.

As to the audit, believe me when I say that I originally thought of a few more invasive procedures to which I could compare the audit before I settled upon root canal. :scared1: :rotfl:

Be careful looking at the cute medals...they're like puppies in that the more you keep looking at them, the more likely you are to pay for one.
